There's usually a good crowd of people waiting, which is always a good sign. They don't accept credit cards, but they do take cash, QuickPay, Venmo, and Cash App. I got Set 3, which was the fried chicken, and it was really good! The chicken was super crispy, the rice was well seasoned, and I didn't spot any ginger in the ginger rice (a win for me since I'm not a fan). I really debated between a 4-star and 5-star, but ultimately decided to go 5. Khao Man Gai is my absolute favorite meal. I live in Portland, home to the famous Nong's Khao Man Gai (originally a food cart, now with several locations). Nong's introduced me to the extreme perfection of steamed Khao Man Gai, served with soup on the side, and a tangy sauce. I am assuming that is probably similar to what is served here, when you select the "Steamed" option (they have 3 -- Steamed, Grilled, or Fried). However, when I arrived a bit later in the evening (around 8PM), they had sold out of everything except fried chicken. So, fried chicken is what I got. It was very good. I liked the fresh vegetables (cucumber, lettuce, tomato), and the garlic rice was very flavorful. The chicken was darker meat (perhaps thigh?), cut in strips after fry. It was served with sweet chili sauce, which was good, although I prefer the tangier sauce that Nong's has. I also enjoyed the broth -- it had some corn in it, which was different than what I was used to. I'd suggest trying the steamed, if it is available. I suspect that the chicken itself would be more moist, and of course it is probably healthier. Give this a shot. It is inexpensive, and quite good. read more

This has been my go-to meal during the pandemic when I don't feel like cooking. They have two carts, one near the bridge in front of Murray's Cheese, and the other at Jackson Ave and Purves Street. The carts are there Mon-Fri, 5pm-9pm. Unfortunately, they are not here during lunch or on weekends. Both carts support contactless payment. I either get the steamed ($9) or the fried ($10) set, which comes with sauces, daikon radish soup, cucumbers, and cilantro. The steamed chicken comes with an acidic ginger sauce and kecap manis. The fried comes with a sweet sauce. You can't go wrong with either choice. I don't know why bland steamed chicken from this cart is so good, but it just is. The chicken is so tender and moist. The fried chicken is flavorful enough that you can eat it without the sauce. I usually tell myself not to eat all the chicken rice, but it's so good I can't help but eat the whole thing. As I was walking by the northeast corner of 6th Avenue and 45th Street today, I noticed a bunch of food carts bunched together. Mr. Khao Man Gai caught my eye because khao man gai is a Thai street food dish that I really like. For those who don't know what khao man gai is, it's the Thai version of Hainanese Chicken Rice. The Thai version has poached chicken, chicken/ginger broth-infused rice, a ginger sauce, and a side of cucumbers and bowl of chicken broth. That is exactly what you'll get when you order the Khao Man Gai. It's cheap for midtown as it's only $8. As alternatives, they also serve a fried chicken and a grilled chicken version with a different condiment (those aren't called khao man gai). My focus here is traditional Khao Man Gai. I felt the chicken was served at the right temperature, just slightly warm. The rice was flavorful, and contained a strong note of chicken and a little less ginger. I find their rice much less oily that the version you would find in Thailand. The sauce is exactly what you would get in Thailand, which is a bean sauce mixed in with ginger. There is a strong hint of heat when you initially eat it but it fades after 5 seconds. As for the soup, the chicken broth is mixed in with traditional white pepper. I really liked Mr. Khao Man Gai's version of this age-old dish. It is truly a bargain for midtown and is a full meal on its own. I am eager to try the other two chicken dishes on their menu. The crust isn't as perfect as Gai on 45TH but it packed some nice flavor. The chicken rice was excellent and the chili wasn't too sweet. The steam chicken was moist and soft. I'd have to have it with their sauce next time. It seems they have the steam chicken and grilled chicken prepared as they had no more grilled for the day. I ordered steamed chicken over rice with a side dish of grilled chicken. It only cost 8 bucks for the set lunch and 3 dollars for the side. No wonder the line is like one block long.
