With Halal Guys raising prices to $8 and King of Falafel & Shwarma at $9-10, it seems this place might be one of the cheaper lunchtime options in Midtown. At $7 for vegetables or chicken, or $8 for shrimp or shrimp/chicken combo, Thongyip is definitely priced competitively. But, the portions are also proportionally smaller. The food comes in a small round aluminum tray - the same as at King of Falafel & Shwarma, but my container wasn't nearly as packed as theirs. So taking into account portion size, this is probably about the same amount of food per dollar as other carts around - which might be good on days when you've got a smaller appetite, but kinda sucks if you're feeling hungry since they don't offer larger sizes. Overall, the food itself is pretty good. I got the drunken noodles (#2) with chicken, and the chicken is nice and plump, not dried out like some thai take out horrors i've had in the past. The rice noodles were fresh, tender with a nice spring to them. I think they could've done with a touch more sauce, though. All the food is made to order, so you can easily ask for substitutions or to take some ingredients out. Also, no need to worry about noodles glomming together! I went a little after 1pm on Tuesday, and there were about 4 people ahead of me, but the wait wasn't very long. Perhaps the best Thai chart in the city. Savory with a kick, without the heaviness of some of those halal carts in the area. (*silently stares at Halal Guys*) Their drunken noodle was underwhelming, but they're pad see euw won me over. Get the shrimp and chicken combo, if they're in a good mood that day, they'll be more than generous. I moved offices earlier this year, further away from Thongyib and it has made lunchtime during the workweek just a little bit sadder. Although another Thai food cart has taken its place, I still miss the superior drunken noodles and pad see ew from Thongyib. The taste is great and the portions generous. I have heard they may not be on their corner for long, whether that is on hiatus or for good I do not know. Either way, make your way over there before it's too late. read more

I hated this place. I hated the taste. My Drunken Noodle with chicken was subtly flavored, not too much salt like is common in cheap Thai places. Mild amount of spice, just enough to keep things sizzling gently, a low simmer for the palate. I don't understand, where is the extra salt? The heavy seasoning? The chicken was not dry, it was instead a good hearty chew. Why do they do this? What are they trying to prove? The basil leaves were fresh as if they plucked them today. Seriously? Is this allowed? I hated the location and the service. I only had to walk one block from my workplace. It was conveniently on the street corner. What gives? Who wants Thai food that close to their workplace? Won't we get fat? The people serving were friendly and welcoming. Don't they realize we don't want that? Who on earth wants a smile with their meal? Most of all I hated the price. All dishes are 7 for veggies or chicken, 8 for shrimp or shrimp/chicken combo, soups are 3 or 4, and shrimp dumplings are 3. I'm boiling, furious. Do they want me to save my money in a city known for expensive food? Are they trying to motivate us to avoid lunch places that charge over 10 dollars? Is this an oasis of eating cheap and tasty? A couple of months ago, this cart was rockin' it. Today I ordered #3 Phad See Ew with chicken. The flat noodles were all clumped up so didn't get coated in sauce. The chicken was also balled up, so although cooked through, was sauceless inside. The taste was also off, and it took me a while to figure out the egg was missing. WTF??!! Every Thai knows that street food needs to taste awesome every time, or you'll be outta business real soon. Please don't serve this kind of crap for $7 in NYC. Went here for veggie or tofu pad Thai and found out they were out of those two options. So I swallowed my gut and went for the shrimp from a food truck. Then I asked them if they recommended the pad Thai or Drunken Noodles. After a quick wait my meal was freshly made. I extremely enjoyed it. Since the Thai cart is close to my office, I decided to try the food instead of going all the way east to Little Thai Kitchen on 3rd (those minutes count on a restricted lunch time!). I've tried the majority of the menu - all good - but my consistent favorite is still the pad thai. Prices vary based on your request for meat protein or veges but only $7-$8! You can also tailor your dish, e.g., remove onions, peppers, garlic, etc. Besides the food, the other plus is ordering by phone! I decided to try it today, I ordered the Red Curry Combo (supposed to come with Chicken and Shrimp) it only came with Chicken and the Red Curry wasn't even remotely spicy. I also ordered the chicken Tom Yum, it was more like Tom Yuck. The broth wasn't spicy and it just tasted like water with some red food coloring and chemicals. If i had to describe the taste of the foods i would say picture what disappointment and shattered dreams must taste like and that would be how this food tastes. It gets one star for being cheap. But for the small portions, I would give this place 5 stars easily, but at a price point of $7-$8 for authentic pad thai in Midtown, this place cannot be beat. I was looking for a good Thai place the other day after discovering Rain had shutdown -- it's too bad too because they could make a really mean pad thai. I ordered their pad thai the other day, and thought it was delicious. It had just the right amount of moistness to the noodles, the seasoning was spot on, and they mix in a fried egg! You don't see that everyday. My only gripe is it comes served in one of those circular tinfoil platters commonly used for "small" orders in Chinese takeout restaurants. Owner, if you're reading this -- please add the larger rectangular platter option that are also commonly used in Chinese takeout. I will gladly pay a few extra bucks for a large order if it means I'm not left hungry afterwards. At any rate, I forgot I ran out of cash today and had to visit the Chase ATM. Afterwards, I forgot where the food cart was, and circled the entire block hoping to find it. Mental note to self: it's on 54th and Park -- got it! For a second there, I feared the worse and thought they went out of business like my favorite nearby Taiwanese food cart, Bian Dang. Today, I ordered their number 3 with chicken, which they called flat noodles, or as the Chinese call it, Ho Fun noodles. The noodles were delicious, and probably the best Ho Fun noodles I've ever had. Noticeably different from Ho Fun noodles prepared in a Chinese restaurant, is the fact that their noodles was not nearly as greasy, and yet they somehow managed to keep it super moist (with added stir fried eggs too!). This place deserves an easy A in my book, and an A+ if they up their sizes a bit. Also noticeably missing from their menu was appetizers. The only one I saw was shrimp dumplings. These guys rock! You will find a long line being that the food is cooked and prepare once you order it. You can avoid line by calling in advance. They'll prepare it for you and save you wait time.
