LUNCH today! What brought me back today was the ease of ordering and pickup. On a busy day, I knew it would be speedy . It was! And what a delicious lunch we enjoyed. Ordered two Sesame Chicken (white meat) Lunch Boxes. $12.50 --Comes with rolls, Shumai, broccoli, rice, and choice of soup or salad. Photo included. We got the Miso Soup which I already knew was excellent-- seaweed, tofu, scallions in a rich umami broth. Perfection! Food was not only delicious, it was a great value! The only downside is sometimes they'll be very busy or preoccupied and you have to wait a few minutes for someone to have a chance to process the bill. Overall, good for a sushi craving! read more

This is the more upscale portion to the adjoining Kazami restaurant next door. It has more muted lighting but it was definitely designed by the same team as Kazami. There are booths on the periphery and tables in the center of the room. The sushi bar is located towards the back of the restaurant next to the kitchen. One kitchen for two restaurants, let's keep that in mind. I was seated as things were ramping up for the evening, around 6PM. There were at least four sushi chefs working behind the counter. I had already gotten a take out order from Kazami but since I was already there, I decided to try some sushi. I ordered a sampling of sushi to get a sense of the place - two orders of nigiri (battleship style sushi/zushi) - yellowtail and salmon. The lead sushi chef mentioned two specials - an oyster shooter and another nigiri, tuna and, get this, foie gras combo. Smooth upsell, sir. I took him up on both because I was feeling fancy. Yellowtail - this was served with a fine brunoise of jalapeño pepper on top. It is a nice pairing, the delicacy of the white fleshed fish accentuated by a little heat. The small cut and careful portioning of the jalapeño prevented it from overpowering the fish. Salmon - simply, fish on top of vinegared rice, the fattiness of the salmon is what I adore. Kumamoto oyster shooter - I don't know if this was the first time I had this type of oyster but it was memorable. It had a distinct sweetness. I even asked if there was a sweet sauce mixed with the brine of the oyster. The sushi chef said he shucked it, that's it. That was a remarkable mollusk. Some say that you can get a hint of melon from Kumamotos. If it was there, I missed it. Nigiri of albacore tuna - a tiny piece of foie gras was placed on top of the piece of albacore and seared with one of those butane kitchen torches. It warmed both the foie gras and the underlying fish, both just starting to ooze fat. It was topped off with a sliver of gold leaf (I was feeling really bougie now). Then, the killer, a small amount of truffle oil was drizzled over the whole thing. Most truffle oil I've ever tried tends to overpower the whole dish. This, unfortunately, was no different. It's like using a sledgehammer to hang a picture on your wall. Don't do it. At first, I was impressed because I'm supposed to like it, right? When all I could taste was the oil, no bueno. I had to ask the chef what fish he used. I couldn't taste any of it. Overall, the place impressed. The plate used to serve the sushi was a substantial piece. It felt like quality. Also, the plating included micro greens and radishes as well as the expected gari and wasabi. The minimalistic and artful plating of the sushi atop that rectangular plate was really quite beautiful. Despite that one sushi dish that was creatively crafted but not to my personal preference, I think this could become my favorite sushi spot in the immediate area. If you plan and call this establishment, they can even do an omakase menu for you. It did seem to get very busy while I was there. While the restaurant itself had some available tables, there seemed to be an awful lot of take out orders. All the sushi chefs had their game faces on...and the hot side of the kitchen was cranking out food for both Wasabi and Kazami. I didn't envy them their shift. read more

Great sushi and appetizers - I do t think we have had a halfway decent meal, it has all been great. The sushi portions and appetizers are very generous. Due to the size of the location it does get very busy and there may be a wait, however it seemed like they have three different staff working each table to we were not left sitting and waiting for drink refills or sauce etc. if you can call ahead of time and get a nice window seat which will set the ambiance well for your dinner. The restaurant was very chic and stylish, with a relaxed and casual ambiance. I was happy that it served ramen as well as sushi and Thai dishes. It was snowing outside so it was the perfect weather for ramen. We also ordered Drunken Noodles and a sushi trio of shrimp tempura, chicken tempura, and lobster fest. The Spicy Ramen was decent and was a decent portion for the price. The broth was seasoned well enough and the noodles were a great consistency. For me, it was around a 7/10. The Druken Noodles was ok, and was more sweet than spicy. I personally wasn't a fan and felt that it was blander than others I've had. It was around a 5/10. The sushi trio wasn't too bad. I enjoyed the Lobster Fest but wasn't happy that it was an additional $3. The Chicken Tempura and Shrimp Tempura were standard, and nothing to really differentiate it from other places I've had it at. Overall, it was around a 7/10. Overall, this was a good spot with decent food, although the prices are much steeper than Queens and Long Island. Should I go right ahead and say, stick to the sushi, not the ramen or the tempura? Well there's more to it than this. Our first time here didn't go well: 1) vegetable tempura was uneven (some overcooked and some undercooked & shrimp tempura had a different batter than the rest on the plate and also didn't have the crisp); 2) the tonkatsu ramen had several issues (the broth tasted significantly watered down, the kikurage mushrooms listed on the menu were nowhere to be found, and the egg that should have been seasoned was poached and unseasoned); and 3) the waitstaff didn't check on us once between setting our food on the table and our asking for a cheque (which is why we didn't get to share feedback on our visit until before we were ready to leave). The head chef was gracious and apologetic about our experience, and we soon went back and ordered a few sushi rolls. The complimentary white truffle white tuna was delicious, and all the rolls were ace. I especially liked the Hawaiian roll with salmon that had a little bit of sweet chili dressing on top, which was such a nice touch. Mysteriously though, the waitstaff still didn't check on us until we asked for a cheque. We were literally the only ones dining in at the time, not that it's ever a reason for this to happen. I told him hey its not my order to argue over I will contact customer care and let them know what's going on and have them cancel on my end so I could move on. Mr Wasabi is my favorite sushi restaurant in Schenectady. I usually get takeout. I've tried their pad Thai which is good, but their sushi is ::chefs kiss::. I can't even bring myself to try the other dishes because I know whatever sushi roll I get, it's going to be bomb (although it all looks great!). My friend and I ate here once in the summer. Quite possibly one of the most disappointing meals I've had in Schenectady. We ordered delivery on grubhub cause we were craving shrimp tempura. We got this, coconut shrimp app, lemongrass soup and chicken lettuce cups. The shrimp tempura was inedible due to being starchy and undercooked. The veg tempura pieces were actually the only thing that was (almost) satisfying. Lettuce cups came already assembled and the meat was practically soft mush. Scared it was undercooked chicken but in all honesty, might be a precooked frozen mix not even properly warmed/seared? I have no idea. I cannot speak to the ambience of Mr Wasabi, I've never been there. But I would advise you all to try their sushi, it is well made, fresh and fabulous! My experience with this establishment is from on-line orders; generally when I'm at work at Ellis hospital and dying for something tasty and (somewhat) healthy. They do not disappoint. All the food my co/workers and I have ordered has been tasty and fresh. The chili sauce on the side is a must and enhances the sushi to the max. I am a vegetarian and there was no lack of choice here unlike many other places. The hand rolls and veggie combos and fish based items are fresh and satisfying. At the last order my friends got California rolls which they said was superb, with really fresh fish. We all got an appetizer (veggie and pork gyoza) which was flavorful but not overly fried to greasiness. Their miso soup is also outstanding, full of umami. I can't speak to the service either as Ubereats delivered the food. Only downside, they are pricy, but very tasty! read more

After almost 75 minutes of asking when my "special roll" was coming and getting, its coming from 4 different staff, all while the 3 other guests at my table ate their food and waited and waited and waited. We asked and asked and nothing. Then when the bill came, we complained and they took $10 dollars of a $90 bill. Shame on you Wasabi. That is terrible customer service. Everything was going well until I was down to my last two pieces of sushi, and then I became extremely disappointed. A patron at the other end of the dining area got up to leave, and the tiny terrier that had been hiding beneath her booth, concealed in part by the restaurant's dim lighting, began to become very frisky on his leash as they left the building. The FDA Food Code allows service animals and working police security animals in restaurant dining areas (emotional security animals are not allowed). A 2015 NYS law allows other leashed, behaved dogs in restaurant outdoor patio seating areas only. This dog did not fit any of these categories. A sushi restaurant with preparation at the table or bar means that the dining area is also part of the kitchen. I spoke to the server, and she told me that dogs were allowed at the sushi bar as well as the booth seating. Maybe she did not understand my disappointment. My experience began without problems. The server and chefs were polite. The server was very familiar with the current menu, but she was not sure why nigiri unagi was not on the menu, when rolls were available. She allowed me to order this simple off-menu item. The chef presented me with a small amuse bouche after I finished ordering at the sushi bar. After a simple soup, my mains were prepared by two different chefs, on different plates (photo). The two types of maki were small, but pleasant enough, plated without any distractions. Unfortunately, one of the two was the wrong roll - the chef preparing my nigiri noticed this and offered to return the plate, but I declined. The nigiri were alright, plated with three flower petals. There was no wasabi under the fish, atop the rice, as is often in the recipe - isn't the name of the restaurant is "Mr Wasabi?" The tamago had a strange texture that made me think it had been cooked and reheated at least once. The food and service was not bad (3 stars), but live-dogs-in-the-kitchen is not acceptable, nor legal. (-2 stars. 0 stars was not an option.) I don't hate dogs. I just don't want them in the kitchen while my food is being prepared. We are very lucky to live in close proximity to Mr Wasabi. It really is great, and the owner and staff are just wonderful. My husband and I probably eat in the restaurant's new very spacious, clean, and relaxing dining room at least two or three times a month. We order takeout all the time. All the time. Whether in person or by phone, they anticipate our order and know our preferences, letting us know if there is uni, belly tuna, or live scallop. The service is wonderful. We have been eating here for years, and I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed it before. In my opinion, it is the best sushi in the capital region. I'm also a fan of Akanomi in Guilderland (although I eat there far less) but not some of the bigger names you may recognize. It's all about the fish and the integrity of the business for me. In general, I eat sashimi and I am not a big roll person. I don't necessarily care about hibachi unless that is the restaurant's theme. At Wasabi, the fish is always fresh and beautifully presented. My husband orders rolls, and they are always delicious. Their salads and soups are great, and I have a weakness for tempura, which is always crispy even with delivery, but here, let's discuss the food of the day. I had today off, just about, and after doing some errands I was starved but wanted to eat close to home and have a glass or few of wine. Immediately, when I walked in the door, the owner recognized me and informed me that there was live scallop and belly tuna available. He knew my wine of choice was a sauvigon blanc and brought me a glass directly. When the waitress came, she also recognized me as a regular, and I ordered the live scallop and belly tuna to start. The scallop came first. I have to say presentation has always been beautiful at Wasabi, but since they have moved into their new location, they have upped their game. The sliced pink scallop was served in the scallop shell (very large, if you've never seen one aka Coquille Saint Jacques) topped with a touch of preseved truffle and gold leaf. It was outstanding, and came with a kani salad, which seemed to include very thinly sliced clam, a welcome addition. The waitress refilled my glass generously, and the belly tuna arrived. It was ever so slightly seared and absolutely fatty, unctuous, and delicious. Maybe with a hint of eel sauce glaze. Again, to speak to the expertise of the chef, each dish was perfect without adding soy or accouterments. I took a slight break, and then ordered the white truffle white tuna, and the octopus appetizer. Having eaten both dishes before, I knew what to expect. The white tuna has a silky sable texture perfectly complemented by the truffle and beaufully presented with gold leaf. The octopus was tender and accented by a slightly acidic soy based sauce. Just outstanding. Most people would have stopped there, but having gained twenty pounds since our last year through covid, I feel healthy when I eat Japanese instead of a pizza, even if I'm overdoing it. I finished with some white tuna sashimi and some eel, which are always on point. I really can't say enough about Mr Wasabi. It is a stellar place that is far above and beyond the competition, despite the hype of some. They will even text you when your favorite fish, shellfish, or special dish is available. The waitress is hilarious! Totally rude, she could care less. She actually wears a black t-shirt that states, in writing, that she doesn't care. When we asked where the drink menu was, she said they only serve standard soda drinks. I asked for an Asahi Japanese beer, and she said they don't have it. I was just about to give up and drink water when I saw the stainless steel shape of a Sapporo peaking out of the shelf on the wall behind the sushi chefs. She did bring me a cold one of those with a glass. When she brought out my miso soup, she plopped it down, spilling some on the table, but she was already looking and walking away. She pretended she didn't notice. The place was not busy. There were other wait staff. It felt like a Seinfeld episode. The sushi was good, the menu was great except there was no drink menu.
