Mrs. Maxwell's has always been the best cake in the game for NYC. ALWAYS soft, fresh delicious and worth the price. I'm seeing it is reported as closed which I pray is incorrect but haven't been there in awhile to see myself. They have one of the best strawberry shortcake cakes I've ever tasted in life and I'm not much into cakes. But this, this cake I was totally into. I traveled far and wide for this cake. Customer service was always on point. All cakes were made fresh to order none of that sitting in the display for a week type taste. I was doing a site visit for work and arrived about an hour early. There wasn't much available near by for a cup of coffee and a place to sit and nosh. I searched around Yelp! and noticed this bakery had rave reviews. Little did I know that there was absolutely no place to sit down and nosh. They were very clear about it that I had to eat it outside. I didn't have a car parked there (took public xportation) and it was a hot day in/on May 3, '18. I was still eager to try something as it was stated to be one of the best in town. That's probably true because there wasn't much else available in town when I went. I got a small coffee and a carrot muffin. They were eh. The went well together because the coffee took away from the sweetness of the muffin, but on their own there was nothing special about it. Inside was interesting. They have several sections or areas for preparing different things. There was an ordinary counter, where I went to order the foods. Then they had a separate area for the custom orders. And so on and so forth. Inside was clean and spacious. They definitely have the room to put a couple of tables and chairs so people can enjoy their eats indoors on hot and freezing days, and on any day in between! Happy eats! read more

I had a good experience here. I hadn't been to Mrs. Maxwell's in years. We stopped in for a strawberry shortcake. There was no line and it was very quick. Perhaps it was because it was a holiday. The store is organized for efficiency. A counter for cakes to go. Another for decorations and preordered cakes. There are balloons, cards and other celebratory items for sale. Literally one stop shopping. I noticed someone even purchasing soda. The parking lot is another nice touch. No looking for street parking. The cake was pretty good too! read more

Definitely our new go-to bakery! Everyone loved that red velvet cake for a birthday dinner we had. It feeds over 12 people I'd say & was $50. They have cakes already made and sold for a little less expensive. I love the icing, it was so good. I suggest not getting a filing because the icing is enough and the cake is so moist that it doesn't need filing! My only complaint/suggestion/concern is if you have a special cake for pickup, just know it won't be ready by the time that they say. Arrive on time nonetheless so you can check-in with them & they will finish off their personal touches to your cake probably after this. I honestly don't blame them. Imagine how many people order cakes with sayings and never show up. It's a business and customers have to respect the business too. They also sell cards & balloons. It's a one-stop shop! read more

For the second year in a row, we received a cake with the wrong filling. Today, as soon as we cut the cake we called- none of the family likes strawberry filling at all. We called and spoke to a manager and she says 'stop, box the cake and bring it back' So we stopped the party, bring the cake back, they then tell us they don't have any more pineapple filling in the same size. The manager takes the cake back- which I find disgusting-and offers to give money back- on someone's birthday. Finally, they decide to go up a size on the cake and begrudgingly sent us on our way. This place has been a favorite of my family and will be closing at the end of the year but, it looks like the employees have checked out already. read more

I normally don't write very long reviews. However I felt inclined to share in detail my last two failed experiences with Mrs. Maxwell's Bakery. My family has been patronizing Mrs. Maxwell's Bakery for years. Even though we love their cakes, we will not be supporting this bakery anymore. The first issue occurred a couple years ago. I specifically ordered a Butter Cream cake with STRAWBERRY filling. Upon taking the cake home and cutting into it we discovered that it had LEMON filling. The second (and final) straw happened just yesterday when my family and I ordered a Butter Cream cake with half Strawberry and half Pineapple filling. When I called to place the order, I was told by a gentlemen named Omar that I wouldn't be able to place my order over the phone since it has two fillings. Instead, I would have to place my order online. I followed his instructions and selected my two fillings on their website. When I picked up my cake, I learned that it was NOT half and half filling, but instead a layered cake (both fillings mixed together). I was livid. I was told by one of the bakers that I should have "added the half and half request in the notes section of the website". When asked why this isn't explained on the website, the young woman just starred at me with a blank face. Unapologetically, they asked me whether I wanted a refund. I traveled all the way from The Bronx on a frigid day and did not intend to go home empty-handed. As an alternative, I requested a Butter Cream cake with Strawberry filling which they already had prepared. To our surprise the Butter Cream was sweeter than normal. Disappointment all around. We are going to find another bakery to patronize going forward. I was very upset with the way I was treated with such little compassion due to an error they made. I love the cakes and pastries here at Mrs. Maxwell's Bakery. Ever since I was a kid my grandparents would drive here all the time for cheesecake when Junior's wasn't an option of choice. WARNING!!! If your diabetic or are on a low sugar diet than I would recommend steering clear!. Although they do have diabetic cakes, I've heard that they just doesn't taste the same....it would be like eating Tex Mex at those Chinese owned bulletproof places! This bakery is awesome!!! My grandmother, who had a legendary sweet tooth and pretty much introduced me the sugary sweet heaven that is dessert, bought all of our cakes for all occasions from this bakery. Now....I know that the amazing birthday cake is completely subjective and can even depend on one's upbringing and even ethnic background. For example, I LOVE Dominican style birthday cake...but Ms. Maxwell's is the complete opposite of that...I dare to say that it is a Semi-Southern- African American style cake!!! So that you can get the full spectrum, I'm going to extol the virtues of amazing birthday cake in order of importance 1) Icing - Should be a sweet and thick butter cream and have a little over 1/3 thickness of the actual layers of cake. There should also be thick decorative pipping along the top and outer rim of the cake with some kind of floral designs on the top in that same butter cream icing. For non-birthday cakes, love it when it is decorated with shattered orero cookies! That's right...I used "shattered" to describe cake decorating! Maxwell Rates - 4 solid stars! The icing is amazing! 2) Filling - If fruit based, should have real chunks of fruit in a gelatinous fruit flavored sauce.....if its going to be an Icing based filling, I would say, make it as thick as possible but not as thick as an actual cake layer (yes I love icing!) Maxwell's Bakery - 3.5! I'm only giving it that because the cake that I got for my Mom's belated birthday celebration, the filling was good but it could've been better...they needed to put more peices of fruit in the middle and make the layer a little thicker. 2) Cake - The cake itself should be so properly made as to be able to be eaten on its own. It should be moist but not sponge cake esque with a medium density and preferrable golden. Maxwell's Rating - 4 stars - To be honest, I rarely eat the actual cake of the birthday cake....if its not touching the icing or the filling then its not gettin' into my belly! They also have a party decorations area in the front part of the store and I was able to pick up some party plates, napkins, and cups...all for $3! in the clearance bin (My mom is extremely frugal!) One note of advice, I would just watch out on the prices when you get to the cashier, not saying the woman did it on purpose but....it was just annoying. read more

So I drove home from work yesterday, and needed To buy a last minute cake...I read the reviews on yelp and figured that this place must be good, the reviews were okay, but for a place that been around for so long only 30 reviews?!?...anyhow it was for my one year old brother's birthday. I ordered a plain cake with whipped cream...the smallest cake, pineapple filling, it was $28. That was the base price, I need light decor, it's was going to be around $41 to add a children's theme on a small cake, with no fancy filling. I decided to just stick to the "Happy First Birthday" writing, and it totaled up to around $30 and some change. I think that's a bit pricey for a plain cake, but money wasn't the object, I just thought maybe it tasted heavenly. I went home, we cut the cake and sadly it was strawberry (love strawberries, just sick of it). The extra they charged me for whipped cream was pointless, because it was flippin buttercream, got the opposite of what I ordered, and it still didn't bother me. What bothered me was that it tasted like a packaged cake from hostess, fake chemical frosting, and yucky packaged cake that's filled with crap, and that is what pissed me off! Maybe this place was good a long time ago, I don't know, but my experience was negative. I am not picky, despite all the downsides, and getting the wrong order, all I needed was for the cake to be worth the taste. Everyone hated it, not just me. Mrs. Maxwell's is a family tradition for me. My grandparents bought their cakes. Then my aunt bought their cakes. Now I buy their cakes for family functions. There's a real old-school feeling to this place, which I love. I also like looking at the old photos of people at the bakery. The cakes are pretty affordable and moist, but are so light that they sometimes don't stand up to the fillings with real bits of fruit. They sometimes crumble when you cut into them. I would suggest cutting the bits of fruit smaller and making the cake just a smidgen more dense. Also, it's not uncommon for their cakes to shift slightly en route. Stabilize them well during the drive. My staple flavors include mocha, strawberry and pineapple. They're pretty tasty. The frosting is never too sweet and compared to other bakeries, it's not an overly excessive amount of frosting. Other goodies abound at the bakery: cookies, cheesecake, marble pound cake, but I'm more a fan of their yellow cakes with fruit fillings. It's also a convenient one-stop place where you can pick up a card, balloon, milk, cocktail size beef patties for parties and a cake, of course. And there's a parking lot, and they take credit cards. read more

I've brought a 8" yellow cake with pineapple filling for $22. I agree with the other reviews that the cake was fresh and tasty. Ruined my wedding cake...they didn't want to refund my money and wanted me to drive ALL the way from my wedding location to have drop off the cake, have them take two hours to fix it (which was not guaranteed), and drive all the way back to pick it up. We needed a cake with a photo of a pug on it, with "We're pugga miss you!," in less than 24 hours. Mrs. Maxwell's was on it like Blue Bonnet! Upon arrival, we handed off our pug photo and wrote out the salutation on a slip of paper and ten minutes later our awesome cake was ready to go. Mrs. Maxwell's showroom was festively decorated, smelled great (like cake), and the staff were beyond helpful. AND the price was lower than the quote I received on the phone! Mrs. Maxwell's Bakery is a gem, and I will be getting all of my cakes there from now on. You should, too! Word to the wise, though: if you don't want cursive or script for your cake message, you should probably specify up front. I didn't, but that's on me. read more

Yum!!! Yum!!! Yum!! I ordered my best friend a red velvet/ cream cheese cake and it was some of the most awesome cake I've ever had in my 31 years of life!! It's a cool set up too because you can see the cakes being decorated; there's an open layout. The only minor drawback is that they could have a better system established for picking up cakes that have been ordered. Mrs Maxwell has never disappointed me yet. They been here forever and they cakes still taste the same from when I first taste it. I always call a day ahead to place my order when I need a cake for a certain occasion. However, I'm also a big fan of just stopping by to buy a slice of cake for $1.50. Cakes are very affordable and always fresh. Taste the same every time. My favorite is buttercream icing with buttercream filing. My parents love the buttercream icing with the pineapple filings and my sibling love wipe cream icing with strawberries filings. There is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. They do have half pineapples and strawberry filing, as well as vanilla and chocolate pudding fillings. I can go on and on. They also serve ice cream cake. I haven't tasted it yet, but when I do I will update my review. Not to mention I live very far from this place and I will travel to get a good cake read more

This place is huge! I love that they have their own private parking lot. Unlike cake man raven down the block , but their cake is so good it over look their faults. Maxwells is cheap on the pastries but their also not that great. I ordered a bunch of stuff , I have a sweet tooth and I wanted to try everything to see if we can have some type of relationship going ! I don't think we're going to make it, the red velvet didn't melt on the roof of my mouth like cake man raven , they also have blue velvet which I never saw in my life. Ordered cake on Tuesday for pick up on Wednesday morning. Cake was ready. Ordered a 2 layer cake; one layer yellow and the other chocolate. With a very thin layer of white icing. (Cake was for my grandpa, 75 yrs old, and he loves cake but doesnt like icing. I requested a "naked" cake and was advised they dont do that. ) Anyway it was nicely decorated and boxed. My grandpa stated it was good except they put a LOT of icing and I agree. You would have thought I ordered extra -since there was sooo much... (the lady who took my order even wrote on the order form; thin and very little icing...) Anyway I loved the yellow layer, it was amazing however the chocolate wasn't as tasty. It was a total miss.
