Ordered cake on Tuesday for pick up on Wednesday morning. Cake was ready. Ordered a 2 layer cake; one layer yellow and the other chocolate. With a very thin layer of white icing. (Cake was for my grandpa, 75 yrs old, and he loves cake but doesnt like icing. I requested a "naked" cake and was advised they dont do that. ) Anyway it was nicely decorated and boxed. My grandpa stated it was good except they put a LOT of icing and I agree. You would have thought I ordered extra -since there was sooo much... (the lady who took my order even wrote on the order form; thin and very little icing...) Anyway I loved the yellow layer, it was amazing however the chocolate wasn't as tasty. It was a total miss. I ordered a Blue Velvet Birthday Cake for my Boyfriend. The decorator added an ugly design to cover up the fact that she left too much space on the cake. My mother sent me a picture. I asked for it to be removed. The decorator left an ugly dent in the cake. The cake also dis not have the cream cheese frosting and filling I requested. The manager swore it was. I sent in the pictures. They told me to bring them in a slice to authenticate that it was not cream cheese frosting. The nerve! Poor customer service and terrible cakes. Not sure why this business its allowed on Yelp as two separate entities. I'm pasting my last review and sucks I can't post a picture up! Paid $76.00 for a cake that look like my 8 year old baked it. I gave them instructions on how the cake should look bc apparently they dont get creative. You pick a regular cake, a filling and they paste a copy of the picture you want. I am not writing a glowing review. For starters, I came into Brooklyn, from York, PA to pick up a cake at 5:30 pm. I showed up at 6:50 and did not receive my cake until 8:10 pm. on Saturday August 18, 2018. I ordered a full sheet cake with a dozen lemon tarts and cupcakes on line. I stopped in the bakery on Thursday August 16th to make sure must customized request were received directly to avoid any miscommunications or delays at time of pick-up. When i spoke to the manager, to explain to her my situation, she told me I was late picking my cake, and she is understaffed. As a customer, that is not my problem!!!!! I ordered half pineapple/half strawberry full sheet cake; once I received the cake and went to cut it at the party, it was all pineapple. This use to be one of my favorite bakeries. I have been coming here for over 20 years. I would always buy birthday cakes here because they are old school cakes with the yummy buttercream or whipped cream and with or without fruit like strawberry or pineapple. I also favorited this bakery because they also sold other pastries and pieces of cake for cheap. I could get a very fresh delicious Napoleon or carrot cake for about $1.50 a piece. I recently drove all the way from Long Island to get a piece of cake and some other goodies and was very disappointed at how little they offer anymore. The cases were almost empty and the cakes (I always buy several different kind) were not as tasty as they use to be. The girl behind the counter had an attitude so I kept having to repeat things she had missed. I went on a Sunday afternoon so I would think things would be fresh and plentiful but I was disappointed. I didn't even eat the carrot cake it was so bad. I am still giving it 3 stars because maybe it was just a bad day and I came on the wrong day idk. I've always had my orders here since they've been consistent with the quality of customer service. Most important is the friendly atmosphere they're have always been able to uphold. They do need better phone service in regards to some employees being able to serve customers better by being more resourceful over the phone. The cake looked the same on the out side, but the writing, was Horrible, why would you put blue and yellow together in such a fashion. It was thick and lumpy. You could hardly read what it said. One of the best bakeries in Brooklyn! They are one of the only places where I can get a fresh tasting cake. Some places have their cakes sitting out for days and the cake tastes stale or hard or they coat the thing in enough fondant or Marzipan (yuck) that you have no idea of when the cake was actually baked. Mrs. Maxwell's cakes are legendarily good and they have only gotten better over the years. Fresh cake, soft and moist and iced to within an inch of it's life. I love both the butter cream and the whipped cream. The only warning I have is to stay away from the red - it has a bitter after taste. read more

But the bakery itself was great, very neat, well organized, the cakes were great but towards the end the prices kept going up and the taste started to deteriorate. I live in Queens and I drive to Brooklyn just to get cake from Maxwell's. They have the best Cheesecake , much better than Junior's , and very affordable !! I pay $25.00 for a whole strawberyy cheesecake at Maxwells, and if I went to Junior's I would probably have to spend atleast $60.00 !! They alo have a vast variety of cakes and cupcakes . Best cakes in all of the city , love the red velvet cake

So this review is solely based on my experience ordering a cake online from this business. I ordered on a Friday for Monday pick-up. I received two email confirmations, one from the bakery and one from the credit card vendor that they use confirming my order. I go to the store on Monday and they don't have my cake. I show them the email and asked them if this was their email address, which they confirmed. They basically didn't understand how an email was sent from their own gmail account to confirm an order that they don't have. While I was there, I logged into my bank account to see if there was a charge from the bakery. Sure enough, the charge was there. They again have no idea how this happened. At any rate I'm waiting for the charge to be removed from my account at this point. Thank goodness this wasn't for a last minute small kids party. Otherwise I really would've been messed up. The two stars are because the cakes are very good/fairly unique tasting (think Twinkies), but an issue like this has to be resolved in a better way than "I don't know how you received these emails from our email account." Best bet: order in-person and save your receipt! read more

Though I live in Queens (currently live in Saint Albans, have lived in Cambria Heights, Far Rockaway and Flushing) and there are many top notch bakeries out here and in Nassau County; I always stop off at Mrs. Maxwell's cakes to buy the yellow cake with chocolate buttercream icing and/or a strawberry shortcake. I drive into Brooklyn mostly to visit relatives during various holidays, so I stop off at Mrs. Maxwell's at least 8 to 10 times per year. When I worked in Brooklyn, I drove by more often and would have to resist the temptation to stop by daily. :D I cannot recommend them enough. Lastly, they are open at least part of the day on all major holidays. This is a great convenience for last minute shopping. Pay no attention to the Yelp address... which says San Fran...
