As someone who takes their cake super serious, I am picky when it comes to eating this delicacy. The back story, I happened to come into town for business, I brought my mother along because she just lost her husband, and it was my mother's birthday. Thanks to Yelp, I saw "Not Jus' Donuts Bakery" and was pleased with the reviews. I called the bakery the day before my mothers planned "birthday party" and the sweet woman I spoke to on the phone took my order perfectly. I arrived around 24 hours later (as promised) and like a fairy tail, my mother's cake was ready. I ordered the "Heavenly Butter Cake," with butter cream frosting and the name did this cake justice! The cake was pretty, moist, and best of all delicious! If I could give Not Jus' Donuts 100 stars I would. The cake was a special addition to my mom's special day. read more

After seeing ad on my computer screen, I decided to take to a trip to my old stomping grounds and visit Not Jus' Donuts Bakery in the 3rd Ward. It was my first visit to the bakery and there were so many of the cakes that were advertised that I wanted to try. I ordered two small/personal bundt cakes-strawberry and german chocolate, a slice of the billionaire cake, as well as a slice of pecan pie. All were good, but my favorite was the german chocolate bundt cake, very moist, buttery-sweet german chocolate frosting. Very delicious! The staff was very kind and patient with me as well. Due to it being my first time, I was very indecisive as far as for what I wanted to get during my first visit at the store. While my intent was to buy everything I laid my eyes on, I simply settled on the choices I listed above. I will try some of the other flavors on my next visit :) read more

About four years ago I sent my mom an email (JUST stick with me for my yarn) asking if she knew of a good place in town to get a straight up peach cobbler. Fresh made, not out of a box that had been delivered by Sysco. 2/3 peaches and their juices and 1/3 to 1/2 breading/crust. (Pardon the Yogi Berra-ism there.) Her response was, "well I asked everyone in the office, and no one really knew." Totally dissed by my own mother. She has an awesome recipe, but rarely makes it anymore. It makes sense, we would have each eaten a bowl, then she would have frozen the rest only to pull it out two months later to discover it had frozen to death. Freezer burn. I kept an eye out in all of the usual places over the next few years. I couldn't find any that looked appetizing, didn't have it's ingredients deconstructed in some faux fancy restaurant, or just wasn't all there. I certainly wasn't going to make it myself, drive to a BBQ place in Austin that has decent cobbler, risking it accidentally be Blackberry Cobbler, or head east on I-10, then north on I-59 for my desired treat. I wanted Mom-caliber peach cobbler. Or make that, Nana-caliber peach cobbler. I wound up grilling peach halves in a lazy attempt to satisfy my craving. Good, but still not quite there. Fast forward to last week. I was driving down Dowling, eating my too healthy vegan panini from Green Seed Vegan food truck, and decided I needed to balance my meal at Not Jus Donuts. From what I gathered, the place was a mix of custom-made, gorgeous cakery and a bakery that sold Southern desserts. Golly, was I in for a treat! It was a Friday, but I read on their site that they made Peach Cobbler on Thursday and sold it 'til it was sold out. I was totally in luck that Friday; I thank my Nana Angel. Not only did they still have a few bowls of the amazing meal, I mean dessert, they also had Sock it to Me Cake and Buttermilk Pie. And Pound Cake. And 7-Up Cake. And Sweet Potato Pie. And Pineapple Upside Down Cake. And Banana Pudding. They have quite an assortment of pie and cakes, slices and personal-sized. They also had a display counter full of cookies. I wound up with a bowl of Peach Cobbler and a Tea Cake (it's a cookie). Both were divine. I don't think your Momma, Grandma, or Great Aunt Mildred could top Not Jus Donuts. The Cobbler was perfect. Big slices of fresh peaches, just enough pastry. Seasoned perfectly, but not overly. I snuck bites for the remainder of the day. The Tea Cake was so elegantly simple. I should have waited until I got back to work, so that I could have made a nice cup of Earl Gray or Rose White Tea. Alas, I ate bites of it in between bites of the Cobbler. I probably also should have gotten a slice of the buttermilk pie. It looked so pillowy and I could taste the lemony richness. No, that would have been overkill. Next time, Gretchen, next time. Fat kid + Loves Cake = Holly S. Not Jus Donuts is really not just donuts! From pies to cobblers, to cupcakes and bundt cakes - they have the baking business covered! Not only do they offer a large variety, they happen to have some of the most moist and flavorful cakes I've ever had! I stopped in here after lunch one afternoon, just to pick up some teacakes (thanks to Gretchen P.'s review) and was swindled by the smell of fresh baked good that coerced me into purchasing a slice of their famous Millionaire cake, and a buttermilk bundt cake. The teacakes were delish and I enjoyed them over a couple days at work with a hot cup of coffee/tea. The Millionaire cake was definitely flavorful moist, but didn't quite hit my sweet spot. It's kind of a cross between a lemon and buttermilk cake with buttermilk icing. The money cake for me was the buttermilk mini-bundt cake with buttermilk icing....so rich, so buttery, so moist....sooooo damn good! I will definitely come back to try their cobbler, but since it's only sold on Thursdays, I'm not sure when that will be. In the mean time, when I'm in the area I will be surely stopping in for another slice of the buttermilk cake! read more

I was able to try this place thanks to Groupon Service I placed an order the day before for an unexpected party and I must say whoever is handling the phones has patience. I never know what I want and they were very helpful! I ordered 18 cake pops and 24 cupcakes! Given that I didn't pay full price, I got a great deal! The cake pops were amazing! Really good!! So mushy but the icing was really good. As for the cupcakes, I am big cupcake fan but I wasn't impressed. They were not exactly walmart quality but I am sure if you were to take a blind taste test, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. would I pay full price? honestly, not but then again, i don't like paying full price for anything. read more

Definitely not my first or last time here! Park on the side street, easier than trying to parallel park on the busy street in front. Soon as you walk in, to your right, you can see the special cakes being designed. Actually cool to see the process! Don't forget to wave and smile! Yesterday I chose to get the Chocolate Cake 4/5. NJD Bakery is super awesome! I am a cake-a-holic, so I planned to bring a big birthday cake to work for my birthday and share the love. Supermarket cakes are pretty nasty in general, so I did some searching and found Not Jus' Donuts bakery, which is pretty close to my apartment. I called in the order, and they were very nice and really helpful over the phone. I asked them to make the cake bright green (company colors) and said I would send a powerpoint slide with the text and colors I would like on the cake. This can be a HUGE gamble, and some bakeries don't pay great attention to special requests, but when I picked up the cake, it looked even better than I had imagined! They did a FANTASTIC job with the aesthetics. Then, when we cut into it at work, it was moist, fresh, delicious, and overall amazing. They definitely did not skimp on the raspberry filling or the rich buttercream frosting, both of which were super tasty. And the price was awesome- it was around $50-ish (I was expecting WAY more expensive for this quality). After using a groupon to try this place out around Thanksgiving, I've been back 3x. They have delicious pies! I've never been able to find a chocolate pie like in 'The Help' , but this place has it. The chocolate chess pie is so good! The 3x I've ordered them, the first time it came with no topping, just perfect. The 2nd time, it came with whipped topping and chocolate shavings. I asked before I left "this isn't a chocolate cream pie right, it's chocolate chess?'. The lady assured me and said they just wanted to try something 'different' with the topping. That wasn't true, it was a chocolate cream pie. The 3rd time, I specifically asked for chocolate chess, and yes you guessed it, it was a cream pie. And I didn't realize both times until after I paid and went home. Kinda disappointing both times, since I really wanted the original. Decided to purchase two, 1/2 dozen cookie orders for coworkers as gifts. Each 1/2 contained: peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, sugar, chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, and brownie. However, I did not have opportunity to taste any of these except the peanut butter. Therefore, my review is based upon one item: peanut butter cookie. The cookie was large and had a good flavor of peanut butter. However, the cookie was thin and a little dry, whereas I prefer my cookies soft. As for the business, the atmosphere was clean and well maintained. The staff was very friendly and greeted as soon as I entered. I appreciated that customers could view the cake decorator as she worked. I hope to go back and give it another try. read more

Had a couple of other cakes done here after hearing about it on TV. Always well done and tasty. So went back to have them do the cake for my husband's BIG XX birthday. Give them some pictures of logos from some groups he is in, told them I trusted them to place them on the cake, choose the best frosting color and flavor (although the cake had to be chocolate!). This was my first and last experience with this Black owned business Saturday I picked up 2 dozen LOL surprise cupcakesfor my daughter's birthday which was on Sunday. First I had to wait due to their machine not working for an excessive amount of time,for which they gave a discount. Fast forward, its cupcake time and they were hard, dry, nasty and tasted as if they were baked a week ago My parents were in disbelief as well as my daughter, she didn't even eat one. The kids all ate just the strawberry icing. I was embarrassed and sad at the same time. Immediately after her party I called the business knowingly they didn't open until today,Tuesday and left a voice-mail and requested a full refund. A staff member calls today, she was rude, unprofessional, not compassionate, talked over me, blamed myself and saved I should have saved the cupcakes. She wasn't trying to hear my side, didnt even ask me what could they do to fix the problem. Stating that how she know I'm not lying. I told her that a family member also had this same issue not even knowing we ordered from the same business. At this point I was over it, she was like she could provide me with a refund but she could either remake them or offer a store credit once she speaks to her manager and would email me with a response.
