Dr. Rex Urich just saved our dog's life. We are veteran dog owners for 37 years and this is our eighth dog so we've had many veterinarians over the years and he is top notch when it comes to surgery and knowledge. He not only made an very tricky diagnosis...correctly!! but then pulled off an extremely difficult and life threatening surgery on our lactating female dog to extract a piece of stuffed toy she had swallowed. This was no simple feat and I think actually a surgeon's nightmare...what with mammary gland blood flow and milk ducts and all. Then he gets in to her stomach only to find part of the fabric has migrated into the pyloric valve and small intestine...Yikes!!! And what a hell day we must have made for him and his staff because they had to bump all other non-critical patients for the 2 1/2 hours the surgery ended up taking! Never did he make us feel stupid or judge us for allowing a toy like this into her environment. (We should have known better by now). Or for delaying diagnosis because we couldn't believe the fabric could be the cause and thought it would have passed through..until she was critical and had to go to E-Vet in the middle of the night 4 days after she'd swallowed the thing. No, he just dealt with the "now" because believe me we were beating ourselves up over it enough. One of the things that most impressed us in this emergency was Dr. Rex's follow through. He called us that night after hours to make sure we understood treatment and medications and to go into more detail about the surgery and recovery...all the while preparing us that we were not "out of the woods" yet and her survival was not guaranteed...especially if we dropped the ball at all on home care. Then he called about FOUR times the next day to check in and then as things were going good about three times the next day etc. which made us think WOW when does his work day begin and end? He truly CARES about the animals he treats. At first my feelings got hurt a little because he can be quite blunt and matter a fact. But I was trying to figure it out by going "google crazy" and "playing doctor" myself and he did in effect "put me in my place". But on hindsight he just wanted me to trust him and believe in his expertise built over 35 YEARS!. I've read the reviews here and yes, his bedside manner and people skills leave a little to be desired and if looking for "warm, fuzzy" he is probably not the Vet for you. He pulls no punches when it comes to an animal's welfare and will tell you like it is. But I would much rather have a Veterinarian/Animal Surgeon that really knows his stuff and that is great with animals and not so great with people than the other way around. In conclusion, for whatever interpersonal skills he might lack...his staff makes up for it and takes charge of that and they are also top-notch. Knowledgeable, caring and he lets them do what they are great at while he does what he is great at. What do people want? Are you great at everything? He is an animal person and his love for them and devotion to what he does shows! I would be hard pressed to find another Vet who puts in his type of hours and yet is rational and reasonable about what he charges for his expertise. Every time I pass by Dr. Rex's office my heart sinks and my stomach rises to see him still practicing. My experience was somewhat like Snowman's below. Quick, incorrect initial assessments by Dr. Rex, leading to a major surgery I likely would not have approved had he not seemed so sure. Dr. Rex's first assessment..."In my experience this type of tumor does not metastasize." Trusting this advertised "experienced" vet, I consented to surgery on my senior dog the following day. He then reported that the removed tumor was huge, with tentacles down to her diaphram, but not invasive into it. Three weeks later the tumor began rapidly regrowing directly on the suture line. I did not blame him for that. It happens. But what I did blame him for is this: Dr. Rex "repeatedly" denied it was a regrowth but rather a new unassociated tumor despite it growing in three places DIRECTLY on his suture line. He put more energy into defending himself than correctly assessing my dog and helping me make the next best choices for her ongoing care. His only suggestion was to remove this now smaller regrowth for another $400. I'd already paid $600 for the initial removal.. Because I have a medical background I knew there was the distinct possibility that the tumor may be growing back internally as well as it was obviously on the suture line. I asked him 6 times (verbally and by email) for an x-ray or CT scan or whatever vets use to check this out before considering another major surgery. I NEEDED HIS PROFESSIONAL OPINION AND GUIDANCE. It didn't come. He avoided answering my direct questions and ultimately just didn't respond. I am a disabled person and felt absolutely frantic. I was left hanging. After about 3 weeks of this, at midnight, my dog was gasping for air so I took her into animal urgent care. I found my answer but not through the professional directions of Dr. Rex, who it seemed, just thought to put her through another major surgery. The ER vet said "Absolutely NOT! No more surgery!" I learned that her tumor was re-growing deep inside . I learned this from an x-ray, and then approving a thoracentesis to drain liters of fluid generated by the internal tumor. She simply could not breathe. I am so grateful that I was wise enough to question his second surgery recommendation and not put my senior dog through another traumatic, and essentially useless surgery. As regards the gentleman's complaint with Dr . Rex Urich, let me say: understandably, all dog people are prone to defending our pets tooth and nail at  even the slightest incursion. Justly or not; pet's right's first, ok? While I sympathize with the origin of the gentleman's complaint,  (blind defense of dog), I take issue with his damning denouncement of Dr. Urich. Unfair and unjustifiable. The fact is, Dr. Urich is probably the best thing that has ever happened to Bend, Oregon veterinary medicine. Rex was considered one of the finest in the highly competitive San Francisco Bay Area. He has an arena, actually a universe full of stanch supporters of which I am one. Here's why I cry foul. I am especially defensive of Dr. Urich because he saved my family. Our dogs sometimes hold up our families in trying times (would you agree?). Dr. Urich sucessfully performed a  complex surgery on my  mother's poodle that maybe, maybe one out of twenty veterinarians could have performed. My father had died the prior year. If Rex had not succeded with my mother's dog, I shudder to  imagine the effects a trauma at that time would have cast on my mother and my family. Before I get hard boiled about this denouncement of Dr. Urich can I ask, "sir, have you considered that perhaps your pet was having a bad day, perhaps you were having a moment or just maybe Rex had a serious surgery on his mind?" Finally, may I ask you to carefully take into account (if you care for your animal as you propose you do) first and foremost that some day your animal may require real attention. Yes, skilled, serious attention? Then I suggest you do the math and realize that Dr. Urich, in spite of your complaint on this item, would be the one you would would vet out (no pun intended) to be the best for the job. Fellow dog lover: Forgive and forget. I was not there, but I will say this as my input for this Yelp forum turning to folly: Respect the man. A master of the medical arts such as Dr. Urich deserves your respect. At the very minimum, a second chance. I had put off cleaning my cats teeth because the area I moved from the quotes I got were anywhere from 650-850$ (with extracting any bad teeth-which would be several hundreds more if needed). I received a coupon mailer when I arrived in Bend ,Oregon that had Dr Urich's clinic offer for 199.00 for everything. I checked at the clinic near me and got same quote as the Bay Area clinic I used. Anyway we went to Mt Bachelor and had a great experience. He advised me Mei Mei would be a bit dopey and whiney that night which I am grateful he did because she was. But was perfect the next day even with 2 extractions. Pain medicine was given that really made it seem like nothing was removed because she ate great and continues to act normal( actually seems to feel better after extractions-which Dr Rex predicted she would.He called the next day which impressed me alot to check on MeiMei. We decided to use this clinic for our dog who had a Cheetgrass in the ear. I had never heard of these but they drive him crazy. Dr Rex used a very quick anesthesia to remove and then gave a drug that removes the anesthesia injection and he stood up in 5 minutes and acted like nothing had happened. Dr Rex seems to be on the cutting edge of good care and reasonable costs for Vet care. I jst read the reviews in this forum and Id advised anybody to read down the list and read all reviews. There are a vast majority of greatly impressed pet owners there.I dont know the circumstances on the complainers but I bet there's another side to these stories,especially as emotional and explosive some of them appear. Having met and talked with this gentle animal lover I cant believe there are correct, Do yourself a favor and check this place out. Te staff is really nice and the facilities are pristeen clean. They have the most modern of equipment also: I got a tour and saw full laboratory, new digital xray equipment and digital dental ( like my dentist uses) and video fibre optic ear scopes for deep work in ears. Dr. Rex Urich has been my vet for over 3 years now. In 2010, my dog Dorjie had a stubborn ear infection that had been misdiagnosed by another vet. After months of repeated visits and much frustration, I heard about Dr. Rex and brought Dorjie in. Dr. Rex immediately won me over with his thorough approach and fine diagnostic skills, as well as his warm sense of humor. Dorjie had a yeast infection in his ears. Dr. Rex spent over an hour with us, and allowed me to be part of the exam and diagnostic procedures. He prescribed the proper medicine, and Dorjie's ears cleared up quickly with no recurrence. This was such a relief for me, after being told for months prior that my dog's ears were fine and I should stop worrying. They weren't fine, and I knew this and couldn't let it rest. I am so glad to have found Dr Rex here in Bend. He is very experienced, and has such a great bedside manner. His rates are very reasonable, and he really goes the extra mile in correctly diagnosing and coming up with successful treatment plans. A couple of years ago, I adopted a stray cat and named him Franke. I brought him i into see Dr. Rex for shots. Franke has a mild case of feline herpes virus in his right eye, which I didn't know about. His eye would get squinty and red once in awhile, and exude a bit of reddish mucous. I, like many people in this day and age, had looked on the Internet and read that "this is normal, especially in orange tabby cats." Well, lesson to be learned, my poor cat suffered needlessly until I brought him in to see Dr. Rex. Dr. Rex noticed his eye and prescribed Lysine, which has worked beautifully. I wish I had brought him in sooner! Dr. Rex is a very warm and compassionate vet, with excellent diagnostic skills and over 3 decades of experience. I couldn't imagine a better vet, and am lucky to have found him here in Bend. I have recommended him to all my friends in the last 3 years, and everyone who goes to him loves him. I have a 15 year old male cat George into see Dr. Rex I knew something was wrong with George he had extrem weight loss, losing function of back legs and drinking excessive amounts of water and excessive urine output. I was very afraid of losing my baby that was given to me by my adopted sister 15 years ago and when she died in car wreck 10 years ago George became my word my everything. He is my child. Anyways dr. Rex was very understanding and gental with George. Rex new immediately he said he be fine but he has diabetes, and I will have to give him 2 shots a day of insulin. Also had a bladder infection. When I woke up the next day there was blood from his mouth down to his chest. I panicked called Dr. Rex and he said it's OK there was a small abscess since his teeth are not good anymore. Just do a hot pack on wound and the antibiotics. Since I live in lapine Oregon and could not get there to bend my mother went and got the pain medication from Dr. Rex. I receive emails from Dr. Rex daily checking in with us. I'm very grateful for Dr. Rex for 2 reasons. 1. Cause of him listening to what I seen happening to George, my boy is almost back to his normal curious George self. Even runs when its time for shots. 2. I'm disabled at 32 years old money is very tight, Dr. Rex understood that and did not do any unnecessary test. He took one blood test and new what was wrong It was the best $200 I've ever spent!!!! For 8 years I have owned a pet sitting business, Central Oregon Pet Care Pros, where Dr Rex was brought to my attention by multiple client's, including dog trainers, that praised his commitment to quality care. So, it was a Saturday of course when my dog Frankie developed a hematoma and my vet was closed. Eagerly I arranged an appointment and the staff quickly got us in and gave her wonderful attention to calm her and make her comfortable. I was so impressed with Dr. Rex's gentle mannerisms and the vast knowledge he had to draw from his 35 years of experience. After a complete exam of her whole body, Dr. Rex recommended two different procedures to help drain the fluid from Frankie's ear. He additionally laid out the time frame to heal and cost involved with each one. Wow I thought to myself, a vet that's considerate enough to help me make a fiscal decision and supportive enough to make sure I could deal with the healing process that was going to be lengthy. I was truly impressed that day. Since then every pet in my family has received the same quality of care I experienced that day. I also am surprised at the previous reviews. Everyone was very nice and helpful. The vet assistant/receptionist was very thorough and took her time to go over in detail what services were preformed. After receiving an estimate for a teeth cleaning and tooth extraction that was insanely high from a different vet's office. I was so happy to come across their cleaning special. They saved me a ton of $$$ and did a great job! Dr. Rex was very nice when he called and went over everything that was done. They also trimmed her nails, & did an anal gland expression for free. On a side note a couple of months ago I had a scare with my ferret, it was the weekend and I was having a hard time finding a vet that works on exotics & of course one of the only doctors that do, was out of town for a couple of days. Dr. Rex & his staff were so kind and offered to put him on fluids and do what they could till the other Dr. was back in town. My little guy felt better and I didn't need to take them up on their offer. I have to say I was pretty upset and just having them offer made me feel so much better. Thanks everyone at Mt. I highly recommend Dr. Rex and his team to any of my clients/patients seeking full service medical care and, in particular, dental work (I am also a veterinarian and I do preventative healthcare - vaccines, dewormers, etc.). I also take my own animals to Dr. Rex when there is something that I cannot address directly. Dr. Rex is an outstanding veterinarian with years of experience. His diagnostic work-ups and treatment plans are thorough and well-informed. His care, and the care of his team, is incredibly compassionate. As a veterinarian myself, I have always been on the same page with him in terms of diagnosis and treatment (always a good sign). In addition, I have been volunteering with Emergency Animal Rescue Services (EARS) to rescue animals impacted by the Holiday Farm Fire during the Oregon Wildfires of 2020. Not only has Dr. Rex always been willing to help out with the rescued animals, but he volunteers his time and donates his own resources to do so for free. I highly recommend him for anyone seeking outstanding medical care for their fluffy family. I am such a huge fan of Dr. Rex, I would give him 10 stars if I could. First of all, he makes house calls, which is such a nice touch, and very useful if you have a semi-feral cat (yep, I've got one). His prices are very reasonable -- he's not looking to gouge anyone. He came to my house to treat my cat's infected claw. He was professional, gentle and genuinely concerned about sweet, terrified Dexter. He did a free follow-up to remove the bandage, and again, very kind, gentle and wonderful. Here's where it gets a little embarrassing... I am a total wuss about blood and such. During Dr. Rex's visit, while I was holding Dexter and Dr. Rex was examining the hurt claw, I nearly passed out from the sight of the wound. I got all pale and woozy and started seeing spots. Dr. Rex got me seated and offered to get me a glass of water, while making sure Dexter was safe. He called to check on me after he left to make sure I was okay and hadn't ended up passed out on my living room floor. I was so touched by that level of service and caring. I'm so sorry to hear about the other reviewer's experience. Not to minimize the pain the other review went through, but we all have bad days and missteps, even vets. I have used Rex as my Vet for over 5 years. I have used other Vets in the area too. But I prefer Rex because he is a straight shooter. He presents the options you have for whatever the situation is. He qualifies what you, as the owner of your pet, are or are not willing to do. Finally he proceeds with your choice. He does regard the care and the outcome of the animal PRIMARILY. His choice for continuing education and volunteer work is to continue mastering his craft. He does consider each client, their individual circumstances and follows up with you the owner to verify the optimal results. He does discuss, with candor, not only his reasoning for his medical conclusions, but can back that up with data and proof through medical journals and furthering his experience and education. He is not brusk, but is highly efficient, and usually 3 steps ahead of my thinking.His forte is his knowledge and experience. I prefer to care for my animals with the most conclusive, efficient and proven medicine rather than prolong a disease or even life of an animal if it is not best for the animal. I additionally have found both Denise and Muriel as exceptional to work with and will continue bringing mt animals to Rex. Thank you for all you do!! read more

SAVED OUR DOG! We have had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Rex at Mt Bachelor Veterinary! Our first time going there was after our dog was attacked on a Friday afternoon around 2pm. Our pup ended up with three puncture wounds and our normal vet said they didn't have time. We've sent numerous referrals to them and still, no time. That's when we found Mt. Bachelor. They told us they would love to see him while they already had a full schedule. They were so kind and took such good care of our pup. We have been going there ever since and are truly grateful for the outstanding care we receive every time. Just recently, he had to have an emergency surgery. Due to a quick diagnoses, Dr Rex and his team were able to successfully save his life. Once again, Mt. Bachelor was there for our fur baby. He is direct and matter of fact especially when following up with you concerning your dogs health. As a Medical Professional myself, I appreciate how thorough and informative Dr. Rex is. Oh, one more thing... his pricing is fair, and won't push tests just to rack up a bill. Three things that describe Mt. I am the "Butthead behind the counter" from the previous review. We understand that pet emergencies can be stressful times for both our clients and their patients, however this review is frankly dishonest. Dr. Rex also owns Home Comfort Veterinary Services, a home-care clinic. He was out on separate business when this client came in, and that was what she was told. We offered to refer her to Blue Sky Veterinary Clinic, which is a short way down Highway 97 from us, and we also told her about the Emergency Clinic, whose hours we have no control over, which is also on Highway 97, but the opposite direction. She was given the direction on the road, not just "somewhere that way." Without a doctor present at our clinic, we have very few legal options for treating patients. Referring this client was our only option. We always try to prevent turning away animals in need, but it can sometimes be the only choice. We know and understand that this may be less than ideal to say the least, but it still remains no excuse for being dishonest about us and our business on a public forum. read more

Very Pleased with Dr Rex! I almost didn't go because the Yelp reviews visible had some negative comments. I looked all the way down and found 28 great reviews in the section marked 'not recommended" I guess I don't understand how certain reviews qualify but 4-5 iffy ones vs 28 excellent ones seems odd. I just moved here and my employer and another friend gave me Dr Rex's name. I asked about the negative reviews and they said don't believe these ill tempered people. So I went and it was a blessing. My cat Buster had been misdiagnosed at my home vet in Georgia and Dr Rex know right away to run an additional test and changed medications. Buster hasn't been this good in months. He also found some additional health needs which we will deal with soon. Great staff and most of all the care was humane and the costs were fair and logical: no unnecessary stuff. I agree with Ken D about how much I appreciate Dr Rex and Mt Bachelor Vet Hospital. Fredo my cat actually seems to enjoy being there and has never acted this way at other vets. Its especially amazing since he had to stay 3 days for a life threatening urinary blockage problem( his second time but treated somewhere else). The second ocurrence was because the first Clinic forgot to advise food change to prevent it again. Also, the cost was much more humane to us than the other big clinic in town. Dr Rex is so practical and efficient and seems to not run alot of unnecessary tests and such. The staff Denise and Murial were so kind and helpful as we called alot and visited and they seem to always have the time and patience for our dumb questions! So I feel the negative reviews were probably not justified and likely communication problems in emotional situations and people could do themselves a big favor by coming to this place. I'm surprised at the last review and I have a hard time believing its valid. My experience with Dr. Rex has been the exact opposite. A couple of years ago we had to put our 15 yo dog down. It had been months of tortured decision making as her condition slowly worsened. Dr. Rex was patient, supportive, and understanding the whole time. When it finally came time to put her down. Dr. Rex came to our home to administer the routine of shots. The experience of euthanizing a family member like a dog we'd has for 15 years was terrible, but Rex made it much easier. We now have another puppy and Rex cared for him just as we'll. In fact, it's Sunday today and I came across this review while looking up Rex's contact info on Google. My dog has an eye issue so I texted Rex. He just replied immediately... How many other vets care enough to respond that quickly on a Sunday morning? Thanks, Rex. read more

I have a 9+ year old Beagle that has had back problems over the last couple of years. Dr. Rex has prescribed her prednisone and pain meds which had seemed to help in the past. This time they were not giving her the relief that she needed to live a comfortable life. He recommended laser treatments. There were other options, like taking her to a specialist and possibly surgery. I went ahead and had her treated with the laser and the results have been wonderful as well as the cost being very reasonable. We noticed improvement after the second treatment and have now had 2 additional treatments which have left her feeling so very much better. She is now able to move, sit and play as she always has. I would recommend this treatment to anyone with a pet that has similar issues and will continue to use this treatment for her as long as she continues to benefit from it. Thank you Dr. Rex read more

We at Herd U Needed A Home Canine Rescue really appreciate that Dr. Rex is offering FREE vaccines and other vet services to us. After seeing an impromptu show and tell at a house concert where some HUNAH puppies were present he approached us directly and offered his assistance without being asked. How cool is that? We rely completely on donations and adoption fees to assist these dogs and Dr. Rex is saving the rescue a LOT of money by helping these homeless animals while they are in our care. Having taken in at least 5 or 6 dogs so far we have found him to be knowledgeable, courteous, and friendly. He approaches each of our dogs with a bit of Cheez Whiz on the end of his fingers in order to win their trust and treats them very gently. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating as well. Mt Bachelor Veterinary hospital and Dr Rex are great. We have been taking out 14 year old shepherd Husky mix to Dr Rex for several years now after having less than stellar experiences with other vets in the area. Dr Rex has consistently been kind, helpful and informative. He has discussed at length what he has found with our dog and treatment options. Recently he even came in early on an already busy day for him and taken care of our aging love puppy who got stomped by a deer and dislocated his hip (thankfully it wasn't broken). As our dog has other some more long existing issues as well and seems to be aging faster and faster as the months go by we have discussed euthanasia with Dr Rex as a down-the-road option for when our puppy seems to be having more discomfort than happiness in life, that is a hard decision to make and Dr Rex has been great. read more
