Do not go here it is not worth it at all. They were charging $20 for parking and $80 for the ski lift for only 30 minutes to spend when you get to the top. Then they were charging an additional $30 just to go to the restaurant on top. They restrooms were super disgusting and it smelled and there was no toilet paper and toilet paper everywhere. This place really isn't the best place to go for snowboarding. You can definitely come here and have a blast. However the service you get in rentals sucks. The mountains aren't bad, every time I've come here the snow has been rock hard. However nice scenic view going up and down the mountain. The food here was actually one of my highlights. Mt. Baldy is not the typical SoCal Ski Resort. If you prefer long lines, flat slopes, high prices, and young high school students who can barely board please continue to enjoy Mountain High, Big Bear, and Snow Summit. If you are sick of the above issues then Mt. Baldy would be a nice breath of fresh air. Positives -Rarely crowded -No lines -Cheap -Steep runs -close to home Negatives -old slow chair lifts -difficult road to traverse up on a powder day -not as extensive of snow making equipment -few beginner runs for new skiers I will admit it is no Mammoth Mountain, but it is the best we have in Southern California. Nothing beats a day of BBQ on the top of thunder Mtn, jump turning off moguls in goldridge, and a nice mellow ride at the end of the day down chair 1 watching the sunset on the LA Basin with Catalina Island in the distance. First, I'm a skier, so I'm biased... That said I'll speak the truth about this mountain. Before moving to California, I skied mostly in Colorado and New Mexico. No So-Cal resort is going to quite compare to the snow depth and amount of back county skiing you get in those places. But Mt. Baldy might be the closest you'll get. Now for the good, bad, and ugly... Ugly: Some nardly old lifts. That said.... Don't be a wimp. I'd rather sit on a slow rickety lift for a few minutes than to stand in the packed lines at the bottom of Bear or Mt. High. Bad: This mountain is almost completely dependent on Mother Nature, other than a few runs (which are all three fun and worth spending a day or even a season on). Last season most of the mountain was closed other than a few days after a big dump late in February, and I'm told this was a low-average year. Good: When the gods allow, this place has more skiable terrain than any other so cal resort by a lot. And I'm not talking just pretty groomed runs, I'm talking off pist, take it where you want, deep powder for people that really love skiing. This place is rarely crowded and tends to draw down to earth, laid back, nature enthusiasts. Expect short lines, fair prices, and extremely friendly staff. It's close, really close, driving close. Yes, technically Mt. High is also close, but you have to access it from the other side of the range, so unless you have a helicopter, you're looking at an hour more drive at least. Most mornings, I make it up to Mt. Baldy in under an hour from my house in Burbank. The price is truly unbeatable. They do have snow making on those select runs I mentioned earlier and this ensures that as long as there are low enough temperatures, you won't be out of luck buying a pass. And yes, the pre-season price of the virtual pass (just requires making a reservation 24hrs in advance) is only $10 more than a regular season single day-pass at Bear Mt. True story! So my conclusion... Baldy kicks ass! Come November, I'm doing the snow dance! Now, if you're a douchbag, trust-fund kid, who cares more about showing off your new jacket than hitting the snow; you need more than the truly epic features Mother Nature put on the slope to bust a move; or you love over priced beer and constant thick boarder traffic on every hill... then this place probably isn't for you. read more

Here's the thing about Mt. Baldy- yes, you can haul your family up here (without chains) and complain when the lines are too long for tubing. Yes, you can complain if the restaurant is too full, or parking is difficult, or the weather didn't cooperate with your plans. Frankly, I don't think this has anything to do with the appeal of Mt. Baldy; but you CAN do all of these things. Or, you could hike to the peak to see Catalina Island, DTLA, the Mojave, and the southern tip of the Sierras on the horizon AT THE SAME TIME. On the ridge, you're exposed to some of the San Gabriels' most extreme winds and temperatures, along with incredibly beautiful views. Set up your rock skis or board- get there EARLY on a powder day and ride the best inbound terrain in southern California (hands down, and I will not argue with you on this). We did this very thing on the morning of 1/8/16 and cut fresh tracks in two-foot stashes between trees all day. If you want to slurp cocoa and be a groomer jockey, you'll have way more fun at Bear or High- I promise. Be prepared- bring snacks and beers to share with friends, water to drink, extra clothes and a first aid kit (just in case). Pay close attention to weather conditions, and bring chains and recovery gear if necessary. As much domestication as this mountain has undergone, you can still get in trouble if nature doesn't agree with you. To put it simply, Baldy is a gateway to ADVENTURE. I've gone to some other ski resorts before and there wasn't a lot of people for new years day, just a lot of people FOR THEM. They don't know how to handle busy seasons or larger groups of people. If you're gonna go during busy season, just spend the extra money to save time and headache at a much bigger resort. The place is outdated and understaffed. I will give them a star for some of the staff members having a positive attitude and trying to make the long wait a little better. We checked the weather and it didn't say anything about active snow falling and the reviews on Google was 4.5 so we reserved for a day pass. We left from San Diego and got to the mountain around 10-11am and didn't get our rentals till about 3:40 and they are open from 8am till 4pm. Getting to and finding parking took about 30 minutes. There was one man who asked for$20 cash before we got to the parking area but we didn't have cash and he just said pay at the ticket booth. Turns out since I prepaid for a day-pass I didn't have to pay for parking. That would be good info to know prior because I would've just wasted $20 if I had it. Getting our prepaid ticket took 20 minutes. Waiting in line to get on the only lift took close to, if not over, an hour. One younger guy didn't know how to load people on there adequately so the line was at a stand till for a long time. It didn't start moving til they switched out with another guy but even then it took awhile because the lift kept stopping. There's only one lift up to the slope and it stalled and took about 45 minutes to get up when we finally got on the lift. We stalled at a stand still for a good 20 minutes at one point. Turns out the lift was built in the 1950s. When we finally got up, the lines in the bathroom as long too since only a few stalls worked and everyone was wet and cold from being stuck on the same lift. And everyone was using the one hand dryer to dry their clothes/hair. I don't know how long that took or how long the food line or how long the food took but I remember looking at my watch and it being 2:30 while waiting for our food. And by the time we got our rentals it was 3:40. There were only 2 guys working the rentals and they were busy and overworked but they did have time to make fun of a guest who didn't know who to voice his feedback to about his disappointing experience since he's gone to several other resorts as well. They told him to arrive at 6am next time? But I've never had to arrive that early to the other resorts during busy season. They also only had one slope open that was short and wasn't worth the 2 times we got to go. We then had to ride the only lift down again and that line took just as long as that morning. I don't know how long that took but it was 7pm by the time I got down from the mountain due to traffic. In short, not worth it. I get that weather and traffic is out of their control but maybe during off season they are more capable but they are not worth the long wait or the limited one slope option. I'll stick with Big Bear from now on. read more

This is a short and quick review; I'm in a rush. The drive to get here is VERY good. Less than an hour and you could be on a slope skiing down. Good. Parking is free. Good. The lady at the ticket booth as super friendly and very helpful. Tried to find us ways to save money. We came with our 3 year old. Very good. The ski lift was old. Not so good. The trip to the slopes from the guest center was scenic. Very good. There's small area for play as soon as you land at the top. The tubing area for the kids is within the resort so you get snow. Ahh... Mount Baldy... I absolutely love this place. I have so many good memories from this place, that it almost brings a tear to my eye as I type this. You may ask why I give it only three stars. Well, there's a few reasons why. First off, the management always seems to have a run-in with any frequenter of the resort. I'm guessing that the same people still run this place as those who ran it about 6-7 years ago, which whas the last time that I was here. I'm also sure that nothing has changed at the resort during those years, or during the last 30-40 years for that matter. The lifts are ancient and slow as any I've ever ridden anywhere. Also, the infrastructure is all run down there. The lodge and buildings are falling apart. Too many times, I've ended up loading myself on a chairlift because there was no one around. Seriously. Strange. They claim to have 2200 vertical feet, but the bottom 1000 feet have only been skiable twice during my many, many visits. The mountain faces west instead of north, so the snow melts away faster. The bottom has a lower elevation, which has been hit hard by global warming. When the place opened in the '60s, you could ski all the way to the bottom on most years. Not anymore. You nearly constantly must download the bottom chairlift in order to get back to your car. It's not all management's fault. Because of it's location, it has very little access to large amounts of water, and therefore no ability to make decent quantities of snow. Between the western aspect and the lack of snowmaking, they can have some terribly thin conditions with major portions of the mountain unskiable. When the snow conditions are bad here, they are, without any exaggeration, the worst anywhere in the Western U.S. Some years, they're not even able to open up at all. However, the place has some amazing redeeming qualities that save it from getting anything less then three stars. First off, there's the terrain. It's far better then any other local resort if you're a good skier. (If you generally stick to groomed ski runs, then you probably want to head elsewhere.) There's awesome tree skiing that you can't get at any other Los Angeles area resort (except for Mt. Waterman or Krakta/Snowcrest resorts, both of whom's status are questionable). They have the only open boundary policy in the area, and have some great backcountry to go along with it. No other resort in the area can come close to what Baldy can offer with regards to backcountry access. There's also a great, mellow vibe without any pretense that you don't get at Mt. High or at any of the Big Bear resorts. While you don't have pretty much any of the niceties that you get at the other resorts, you instead get a true ski culture there. No other local resort has that. (Except for maybe Waterman, if it is still operational.) The resort is very well set up to create a great corn cycle going for spring conditions throughout most of the ski season since the upper elevations are higher then other resorts and the aspect faces west. Often times, the other resorts will have crappy, icy conditions, while Baldy has some beautifully creamy spring corn conditions that make me happy in the pants just to think about. All of this boils down to the following statement: When the snow conditions are good, there is absolutely no better place to be in the local area. However, if you're not a very good skier, or you need a little bit of pampering, then you'd better stay the hell away. read more

Just went here for the first time to go snowboarding since I moved only 30 minutes from the mountain and I had an absolute blast! Went up on a Saturday morning and there was nobody on the mountain... had the whole place to myself! The lifts are very old and slow but when you get to the top you can see Catalina island if it's a clear enough day. I Went off trail a few times and found some untouched powder and fallen trees to grind on. Got some food at the restaurant and the food was really good but very pricey. Over all had a great time and would definitely recommend coming here if the conditions are right! read more

Got a free pass from a friend so I had to check it out, especially since the local conditions haven't been this good in years. Going when natural conditions are good is the key to this place, because they don't do any snowmaking here. Not yet, anyway--we learned from a local guy that the place has new owners and they're looking to spruce it up to make it more competitive with other local ski areas. It must be true because we did see some snow machines already on the slopes, but not sure if they were functional. Anyhoo, we made our way up the gnarly hairpin-turn roads to the rather small parking lot, and encountered a strange setup. They have a building where you buy tickets, but to do anything else (lockers, lodge, ski school, rentals, etc) you have to take the long main lift up to the middle of the mountain. From there you can take more lifts either to the right or left to access the very top of the mountain. So it's inconvenient to go out to your car if you want to take a break or whatever--you need to bring all your stuff with you if you want easy access. All the lifts at this place are non-padded and rather old so they're kinda scary but they get the job done. This being my first time back on skis in nearly 20 years, I decided to go for the "easy" runs on the left of the mountain. Be warned, their idea of easy is more like the intermediate runs at Summit or Bear Mtn, at least near the top, anyway. They drop you pretty fast and it doesn't mellow out til about halfway down, so it took me a couple of runs to get the feel for skis again, but once it came back to me it was a lot of fun. Plus, it was a BEAUTIFUL day--sunny, clear skies, and the views were truly breathtaking. We got there right at 8am on a Friday so it was nearly empty in the beginning and didn't even really get "crowded" when more people showed up. Nice long, open runs--I haven't experienced that locally...ever. After doing quite a few runs in the "easy" area we ventured over to the other side of the mountain for some "intermediate" runs, which were definitely more challenging, but had some nice flat trails where you can catch a breather if you want. Snow started out icy and granular when we first got there at 8am, but softened up once it got warmer. There were some small bare patches on one of the runs but nothing crazy, and pretty good coverage overall. When the conditions are right this place is truly a gem, but it does lack in certain amenities and convenience one is used to at other ski areas. Aside from the slow, non-padded lifts, the food in the main lodge is pretty terrible and they really need more signs on the slopes telling you where you are and where you're going. It got pretty confusing at times, even though we thought we'd looked over the trail maps pretty well. Also, I don't think this is a good place for absolute beginners, especially those who are learning to snowboard. The last heydey for this place was probably in the 70s, so the way the lifts and runs work are more conducive to skiing than boarding. As a barely advanced beginning boarder, I know I wouldn't have liked some of the narrow areas with tight turns, not to mention the narrow lift exit areas. Also, the ski school practices around the main lodge area where there is a gentle incline, but there isn't a dedicated bunny slope that's in between the little incline and the easy runs so I think it might be intimidating and frustrating for the abosolute beginner. read more

I have been snowboarding since for over 20 years and this is the worst place I have ever been too. Not only are the conditions dangerous with solid ice blocks in the middle of runs, my friends who got rentals from the resort were both giving boots with torn open toes and soles open that's were full doors length! Mount baldy lift is 15 minutes of relaxing time then lunch at Too Notch. Once we arrived at the entrance to pick up are awaiting tickect to go on the lift. The gentleman had no personality but he did his job. We walked up to the lift entrance and this guy that operates that part seemed as if he loved his job. The lift just continues to move so in order to get on there you have to move to the mats and stand in front of moving lift and when it comes turn around grab and hop. It was simple. As you lift across the. Mountains you can just observe and breath in fresh air. We lifted all the way to the restaurant which are waiter was very nice. The food was nothing to brag about but it was and experience. So after we ate we took the lift back down and the worker that works the lift going back was awesome too. I went yesterday there around 1:30pm after checked in I went to use restroom which was disgusting someone even shit on pee area and smell was so so bad. Also, when I took stairs to catch lift to go up, this guy with long hairs asked me and my wife to moved forward while he forgot to take the chain off. After getting on lift one of this guy slammed the top safety grill on my left knee which caused me severe pain and bruis. Not only can this ski lift be utilized during ski season, but it's great for use on hikes as well. It can be accessed from Devil's Backbone hiking trail. It is a 15 minute ride and cuts about 3 miles of hiking time either up to or down from Mt Baldy summit. There is a little restaurant here to get a bite to eat and free use of restrooms. It is so relaxing and serene to move slowly above the trees on the ski lift with the calm and quiet that surrounds you. We took this lift down, as the hike up to the summit was pretty grueling. I know, it's cheating, but what a lovely and welcomed ride it was after a punishing hike!! tip #1 - purchase tickets on-line for $3 off one way tip #2 - the lift ends/starts just a few minutes walk away from Manker Flats at a parking lot. I was a littler nervous about the chair lift and my kids (4,6,10) but the operators, loading and unloading, were soooooo kind in helping all of us feel safe! Customer Service is horrible! Stay away from this company! Go to Big Bear. Tried to reschedule my tickets due to my daughter and boyfriend breaking down on the way there in their car. They wanted proof that the car broke down. Sent them the receipt but it wasn't good enough for them because the date of the breakdown wasn't on the receipt. It's horrible to treat people this way. The tickets were for a mid day Monday afternoon probably one of their least busy day and we would have rescheduled for another Monday. They value their pockets over their customers. read more

I could not find a Yelp review for the Mt. Baldy Ski/Snowboard School so I am placing my review under the Mt. Baldy Ski Resort. 5 Stars for Kim - my Snowboarding Instructor for Private Instructions at the Mt. Baldy Ski Resort!!!! This is my 3rd time snowboarding (my first 2 times were over 10 years ago). During my first 2 snowboarding trips, I was able to learn the Falling Leaf Heel Edge method of snowboarding pretty quickly, but could not for the life of me, learn how to snowboard on my toe edge. Within 1 second of getting on my toe edge, I would either fall on my face or my buttock. Snowboarding is no fun just on the heel edge. This time was no different. I think that classes for skiing/snowboarding is fine for introduction to either sport, but I had one very specific snowboarding question (how do I snowboard on my toe edge with my regular-left foot forward?) that my friends seem to have a tough time helping me with. I think private lessons are great for refining techniques or for answering a very specific question instead of wasting time/energy in classes that discuss what I already know. Should I spend my hard-earned money on $80 for a 1 hour private instruction lesson? Could I negotiate for $40 for a 1/2 hour private lesson? Let's put it this way. Within a half hour, I had my question answered. It was the best private lesson that I had ever had!!! Kim did NOT waste my time going over the heel edge snowboarding (even though I am decent at it, I am not a professional at it). She started with the basics of toe edge snowboarding and stopped me to watch her when she felt I needed to pay attention to techniques. Kim analyzed correctly what I was doing wrong and gave me tips immediately to adjust my problem areas, such as not using my ankles enough nor giving my board time to switch slowly from heel edge to flat to toe edge (I was switching too quickly from heel edge to toe edge and that flipped me over to my face or my buttocks). I also learned which direction to turn my body and how to face my body while going down the mountain. After Kim's private snowboarding lesson, I was finally able to carve my way down the mountain slowly. Yipee! I can't wait until my next snowboarding trip. read more

Drove up from LA to go snow tubing (2 hours). Upon arrival we found they were closed due to high winds. Totally not the resort's fault BUT they had our cell number and email.. so why didn't anyone notify us the moment they had to close. This is a review for the snow areas, not the ski resort. I've never seen snow before, so when I remembered that I forgot that Mt. Baldy existed, I decided that a trip just HAD to happen. So, we trekked out here, up the carpool lane, and somehow ended up on the 60 East. Not being familiar with much of anything outside of the OC and LA, we drove all the way to Riverside before we realized we were completely lost. So, the 1 hour drive took just about 2 and a half hours. Dumb. But once there, we paid our $5 to park, and I got to see snow! And play in it! And I even got a snowball thrown at my face. We made a snowman. And there was a beer bottle on the ground, so he became an alcoholic snowman (the best kind). Next time, we decided we're bringing sleds, or at least garbage can lids, because we sure as hell weren't buying them from the creeper in the snack shack for $25. When I was looking for tubing places, they were all booked, except for this one. After the experience we had, now I know why. I bought tickets for tubing and organized a group to go for a day during Spring Break. The kids were so excited. When we got there, the gate was closed with no sign or anything. Many other cars with families and kids, WHO ALL BOUGHT TICKETS, were driving up to the closed gate also. One guy bought his tickets the day before and spoke to someone who said they were open! After speaking to some locals, we learned that it was only open on the weekends now. REALLY? The website never stated this change in status and we never got an email that it was closed. I can understand if the weather changes and it's going to be closed, but give us a warning! It was heartbreaking to see all of the disappointed kids, especially when we drove 2 hours to get there. There is seriously something about calling Baldy the "Best Kept Secret" in these parts. The reason? When there's great snow (as we saw this past season), the runs here are sweet. Not just sweet, but it sends tingles down your spine. I got my first season pass in 2009 here for $50 because the Chamber of Commerce apparently wanted to attract more crowds. And I say, more power to them! Definitely the right thing to do. As Borys R. said, there's only four lifts. And one of them leads to "HQ". Also, the lifts are relics from a bygone era. Heck, if you look around (easy to spot in Chair 4), you'll see that some old 70's era warnings are still there. Also, the exits on the lifts tend to be skiier friendly -- that is to say, they're long. So, make sure you can get off lifts! But, the lifts give way to great runs. Amazing runs. Well, except the beginner lift. Which you need to take to get back to the main lodge, if you go to the right side of the mountain. Oh well. But, sticking with the beginners....it's a great little area for the noobs! The ride down to Chair 2 is nice and slowly sloped. But, it does cross into all the other slopes there, most of which nets you some crazy speeds. Anyway, Chair 3 is home to a very fast black diamond, if you let it take you. Or, another fast intermediate run. But, my favorite is Chair 4. The runs here aren't as hard, but there's lots of places you can go through the trees, and it's usually wide enough to feel exhilarating without being dangerous. And it's also the home to the best view of Baldy! Take Chair 4, then go down the middle area (you'll see a resevoir tank going up) and you can stop near the fence for the perfect view. But, the main caveat to me, is that I've been here with decent snow, and great snow. But, there's not much snowmaking, especially at Chair 4, where there isn't any. But, man, when it's great...it's heaven! Take it from me. Been there over 12 times this past season! I'm gonna miss the place, but, Big Bear Season Pass awaits! read more

We would like to send a Big Thank You to the gentleman named Tommy for not only doing an excellent job but far beyond his duty. We decided to climb to Mt Baldy summit in 12/26/20 and purchased 5 one-way down lift tickets when we got to the top of the notch. The view on the summit was incredible, but the hike took longer time than we expected. It was very dark when we get down and the lift service was closed. When five of us discussed how to get down to the parking lot, Tommy chatted with us to make sure we were safe back. That was very warm and caring. Hearing that we bought the tickets, he offered us a ride back to the parking lot. During the whole ride, he was nice to share his hiking experiences and passion about Mt Baldy. There are not enough words to describe how much we appreciated his help. We strongly suggest he should be named "Employee Of Month". We are looking forward to visit Mt Baldy again. Hopefully, we will see Tommy then. read more

My daughter had purchased a Groupon for us to go to the top of Mt. Baldy for breakfast. We went a couple of weeks ago. We got there shortly after they opened while it was still cool out and started at the Sugar Pine Chair Lift which was near the parking lot. The elevation at the bottom of the chair lift was 6500 ft. and the elevation at the top was 7800 ft. The ride up the chair lift was peaceful and beautiful. This was a very popular location for hikers although we got there early enough so the line for our lift tickets was not too bad. I could definitely see the appeal to hiking up a mountain, grabbing a hearty breakfast at the top and the ability to take a chair lift back down. At the top, we went to the Top of The Notch restaurant. The Groupon had included vouchers to use towards breakfast. We were expecting to be able to order off of the menu and then apply the voucher to the price. They were actually only serving a buffet. The food was pretty tasty...scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, breakfast potatoes, fruit, oatmeal, bagels/cream cheese and pastries. In all, it was a nice morning. read more

Great Views We just wanted to take the ski lift to the top and look around. The view was nice. There was a bit of snow, but was melting slowly during the March of California weather. This is no resort, so don't expect anything fancy. The service is OK. The service folks were friendly. The parking is $5 at the bottom. We saw plenty of cars parked below the official parking lot where parking was free. There are some OK food choices at the restaurant. We had coffee and hot chocolate which was ok. Remember, we were there for the views. It was not crowded for a Sunday afternoon. The drive to the parking lot can be a bit steep, so take you time and let others behind you pass. read more

1. For ski/snowboarding - go only if they had a heavy snowfall the night before bc they rarely make new snow themselves. Check their website for up-to-date info. Also, if you're fancy, don't bother. The lifts are old and scary. i think it's a unique experience tho haha. If you're a newb, i think big bear is better suited for you. Never really crowded which I like. Cheap. 2. Food - nothing amazing. They have cup noodles by the bar. I wish they sold the spicy korean ones. 3. You can hike up to the lodge too. It's far but pretty easy. read more

It was extremely cold coming down the lift through the fog. DRESS WARM! (It was 68 degrees in Fontana). Bring a small but thick blanket if you can. There was rain on the forecast for the afternoon, we went around 9/10am and came down around 1, it started raining/snowing on the way down. -Grab a brew at The Notch, bartender was amazing.. we ate at the bar.
