What can I say about Mount Gretna Hideaway? Somewhat rustic decor with the lights inside turned down low and the windows are somewhat small. It lends a feeling of low ceilings and coziness. You have glimpses of the wooded outdoors and paintings of wildlife. There's also a set of bronze climber that's rather quirky. Our party of seven was there to quietly celebrate a 31st wedding anniversary and the restaurant was very kind about our disorganized group. The guests of honor had ordered a Blue Moon Belgian White (served with an orange slice) and waters while waiting for the rest of us. The food was very well prepared. The St. Patrick's Day menu was an early feature & some of us took advantage with a notable option being the Reuben Quesadilla. My mother-in-law was concerned that the sauerkraut would make it soggy. We were pleased that her quesadilla was crispy & she said it was a generous amount of corned beef. Father-in-law ordered the Roast Beef #3, which is described as "Served hot on thick sliced sourdough, and smothered with fries & gravy". It was, indeed, smother in gravy and looked like a very generous portion to me. A couple other dishes were the Cajun Style Chicken Alfredo and Shepherd's Pie. I was informed that they were great dishes and sister-in-law-to-be claimed it was a better shepherd's pie than she could make at home. High praise! We had the Fish & chips. The haddock was a large filet, the batter was a good ratio to the flesh and the fry was a great temperature. There was no excess of greasiness. The chips and fish were very crunchy without being dried out inside. The tartar sauce was unremarkable, but the coleslaw was perfect; tangy with vegetables that had a crisp crunch. Our waitress was very patient with our little one; the pickiest of us declined anything except a beverage until it was time for dessert, which was a kids vanilla ice cream, with sprinkles. I ordered a Lemon Berry Cream Mascarpone - a white cake with a delicate crumb, delicious cream filling, tart cranberries and sweet blueberries. Absolutely the best dessert I've had in Pennsylvania. The rest of the party ordered Cheesecakes and Irish Bread pudding. There were no complaints to be heard. read more

Roast Beef, simply great! The Guinness Burger was very good, great taste. A lot of places are going smash burgers route, but this style of burger is definitely better. I love this restaurant. I am local to the area and love the views on the deck. This evening we had Avery. She spent her entire time chatting at the hostess stand. We had to ask other servers for things we needed or stare at her hopping one of them would realize. She'd then get what we needed and go right back to the hostess stand. read more

My second visit was not as great as my first, but my food was still good. I ordered the pretzel crusted pork chop off the Oktoberfest menu. It was pretty good. It came with pierogis, which I love. They were good. My boyfriend got the Wiener schnitzel and would have liked for it to be more authentically German. Our friend received a completely different sandwich than what she ordered, which was strange but she ate it because she wasn't picky. My boyfriend and I split the chocolate chip cookie again. Little out of the way place. Quite woodsy and appropriate for the location. We went because a gift card was given and we had never been here before. We were greeted as the door by a helpful young man and seated. The dining room was nearly empty , mid week and at noon. A group of golfers at one long table and a couple at another. The bar had a few people but wasn't attached so didn't bother us The spouse went for a cup of chowder with a blackened shrimp salad the blackened shrimp was too salty she said. I went for a Rubin with a cup of French onion , the soup was good but too many croutons,The Rubin was pretty darn tasty but got a bit soggy on the bottom. Nice and lean meat , good cheese , chips were crispy . A couple of iced teas with free refills. We would go again if in the area. $50.21 not counting the tip and not discounting the gift card. read more

Server showed up rather promptly and took drink order but after that service was mediocre. I ordered a bowl of Lobster Bisque which tasted good but was only lukewarm. Server didn't check on us until I finished it so when she asked how it was I said good but it wasn't hot. No discernible reaction to that. For entrees my wife got crab cakes which were also not hot and quality was also mediocre. I got blackened chicken Alfredo and broccoli. The pasta was hot, the broccoli was just barely warm. This is not the most expensive restaurant around but c'mon you can at serve hot food. Total bill around $72 as we don't drink alcohol. read more

I had no idea this place was here. A friend recommended it while we were in the area as a lunch spot. It was still Fall and the weather was amazing so we were seated at a table in their amazing ourdoor space. It's so prettty; I felt like I was on vacation. The menu had a lot of really good looking options and we struggled to choose. We started with some wings. They were exceptional--- crunchy, juicy and well sauced. Our friend ended up with a spicy chicken sandwich. I had an open face beef sandwich with gravy and french fries. My husband had a chicken Caesar wrap. Was at a nearby wedding venue and found this little hidden gem They have what looked like a big inside area, a nice bar, and an awesome outside deck. There is a bar outside as well to sit at. We ordered the crab pretzel to start with, and it was huge and tasted amazing! There were some summer specials and we decided to go with them. I got the Maui Shrimp Tacos with Coconut shrimp, mango salsa, poblano slaw, cheddar for $17, I believe. The pieces of coconut shrimp were huge and were so delicious My mom got the lobster tacos, Canadian lobster, gulf shrimp, Mexican street corn slaw, queso fresco, lime for I believe $19. This is not a restaurant that you would drive by unless you find it by mistake. This is a destination location.. Thus HIDEAWAY!.. We called ahead and ask for reservations and she said it was over an hour for seating inside. They also offer a huge outdoor muti level deck with a bar. It's cute but not. the 2x4 wood deck painted brown looks old. It doesn't look or feel cozy. After an hour wait, no reservation for deck, we were seated way way way in the back. No big deal this is a huge deck. In 10 minutes the server come and we ready to order. We order drinks and our food. Prices seem reasonable. $7 for a bowl of seafood bisque, very good. They have seafood trio , crabcake , shrimp, and scallops. very small portion. but very good. Our salad was served 10 minutes after the entree. The was more of an absentee server. I had to go look for him to get the bill. I like this place but don't love it. I live in Lancaster PA and for a 45 minutes ride from Lancaster, which you know is not east, not worth the trip. It was an okay place as far as the food went. The bartender was very friendly and polite and took very good care of us. I read the PA restaurant inspection a week later and the results were less than flattering. I was surprised by how many infractions the restaurant had accrued. Again, I want to stress the staff was wonderful. The surrounding area is charming and quaint, as in keeping with the history of Mt. Gretna. But until the problems I read about are addressed completely, I'd meet with friends for a drink but avoid ordering food. read more

Visited on Sunday, July 6 at 9:26 PM (outside bar). I'm originally from this area and have always enjoyed stopping by when I'm home -- but tonight left me feeling disappointed and unwelcome. While sitting at the outside bar, the bartender made a homophobic remark about the city of San Diego -- a place I've actually lived and still hold close to my heart. His comment wasn't just ignorant; it came from a place of small-minded judgment that has no place in a service role. The irony? Lancaster likely has just as many LGBTQ+ individuals -- we're just not always given the same freedom to be visible. That kind of "joke" only reinforces why. If this establishment wants to be seen as inclusive and modern, it starts with addressing behavior like this. I've been here before, and all went well. Today, I went for lunch and ordered the roast beef special #3, roast beef on sourdough bread, with French fries, smothered in gravy. Well, the bread was at least 3/4 inches thick, hiding 4-5 thin sliced (kinda fatty) and some fries, swimming in beef gravy. Love summer nights on the deck! We went Saturday night and it was busy but we were seated quickly (and faster than the estimated wait - always a plus)! Our server was great, the menu had something for everyone and cocktails were delicious. They had live music going which was nice, too. Their specials list was surprisingly big too. That's where I chose the crabby skillet from, and if it's still available when you swing by, I highly recommend this dish. A crab cake packed with lump crab, perfectly cooked shrimp and scallops, this dish filled me to a comfortable point leaving enough room to get ice cream down the street. Wonderful spot! Ambiance was beautiful with outdoor areas lite at night. This is truly a hidden gem in Mt Gretna. Our large party had a whole area in the back for the kids to run around and were able to stay to enjoy some drinks and conversation in our spot after dinner. Great service as well. read more

Love the atmosphere of the Hideaway. Appropriate name for the location - tucked back off the main road, surrounded by trees and nature, beautiful patio area and quiet (at least during the afternoon/early evening). Service is always very friendly and staff welcoming. The food isn't bad, but it's also nothing to write home about. The setting is what makes this place special. My Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich was not so hot and rather unforgettable, but it also wasn't the worst chicken sandwich I've ever had either. The daughters had the Chicken Cesar Wrap and loaded fries - both were satisfactory. My husband had the Taco Salad and had no complaints. read more

They were busy but we we sat at the bar and it takes a bit for them to check with you. But the food was absolutely amazing. I had the Cobb salad with shrimp (you can get steak or chicken) and it was crazy huge but really good. He got a Mother's Day special Five way rice bowl. It was as he described it amazing. I have long loved the very appropriately named hideaway across decades as a resident of Mount Gretna. The food selection is varied and generally very good. The portions are more than ample and can be easily shared. the Services is always friendly There are only two modest negatives. First is that the food is sometimes a little heavy handed. For example, hideaway fries are mostly Hideaway with lots of stuff on top of a smallish pile of fries that are not always crispy by the time you get to them, and if you don't want bacon, you'll have to ask them to hold it. Their second drawback is easy to resolve. It is their eco-UNfriendly Styrofoam take out containers. If you like local ambiance with a patio-GO! The boneless sweet chili wings starters were outstanding. Menu has some creativity but we were late lunching so I got the slow roasted beef without the bun. I like spicy so should have asked for some kind of hot sauce -it was a bit bland for me, but tender and juicy. Not complaining! All tables were socially distant and servers were all wearing masks. We enjoyed some fancier beers and also some old classics like miller lite. I tried the local Snitz Creek Brewing Blueberry Cream Ale and it even included blueberries as a garnish. Definitely a nice touch. We got Hideaway Fries and shared between two of us. Manager Rob Henry is the worst person and employee I have ever come across. It's too bad that one experience from a jerk can ruin your experience and impression of a place. Had dinner here a week ago Saturday wonderful time great staff, understaffed but we get that. Today I did a 40 mile bike ride and stopped midway for a meal and a drink on the patio. Great bartender. It was exactly 11:30 and they just opened, probably a half dozen people seated for lunch. My bike is very expensive and I brought it into the bar and leaned it against the wall where no one could walk by and trip or disturb it. Most road cyclists, like myself don't carry locks because they're too heavy. Finishing my meal and just paid and Mr. Rob Henry comes up to me with the worst attitude I have ever experienced with a professional restaurant individual. Starts with his tone of voice and attitude that they don't allow bikes in or on the patio. He made a point several times to me with his shitty attitude. He walks over and starts badgering the bartender and then proceeds through the restaurant telling everybody in a shitty attitude and disrespectful tone that bikes are not allowed in the patio. So point number one. I get they may have a policy but I was not aware and how would I know. Rob Henry has no clue on how to handle situations. Started in with an attitude towards me when he could've simply said, you probably don't know our policy but we don't allow bikes in the patio area. Cool man, I get it, sorry about it, won't happen again. Because that's who I am a reasonable and professional in my personal and business life. Like you should be Rob Henry I wish I had thought about it, but point number two, there's no posting outside the restaurant. this restaurant is on a major cycling trail and road. I'm sure they have a lot of cyclist stopping in. Rob Henry, you should be ashamed of the way you treat your employees and worst of all, a customer! I would be fired on the spot if someone in my company saw me treat a customer like that. read more

The lights and torches at night were incredibly romantic and it would make for a nice place to go with friends... IF the food was anything special. The Whiskey Max and Cheese: Watery, sticky, bland The Guiness Glazed Burger: Small, overcooked, WAY overpriced The Nachos: Awful. Just awful. Avoid. A waitress warned us not to get them and we didn't listen. The Crab Pretzel: Overpriced, but not terrible. A decent pretzel, but you're in PA so decent is the equivalent of terrible. French Onion Soup: It was better than Panera Bread. ‍ Bottom line, the lack of quality in the food does not meet the high prices of this location.
