The lights and torches at night were incredibly romantic and it would make for a nice place to go with friends... IF the food was anything special. The Whiskey Max and Cheese: Watery, sticky, bland The Guiness Glazed Burger: Small, overcooked, WAY overpriced The Nachos: Awful. Just awful. Avoid. A waitress warned us not to get them and we didn't listen. The Crab Pretzel: Overpriced, but not terrible. A decent pretzel, but you're in PA so decent is the equivalent of terrible. French Onion Soup: It was better than Panera Bread. ‍ Bottom line, the lack of quality in the food does not meet the high prices of this location. Just go somewhere else or come here for the crab pretzel and a beer. read more

Visited this afternoon with a group of 17. Everything was excellent. Service was friendly, genuine, and efficient. Food was all brought out at the same time, which for a group of 17 shows skill, experience, and effort. Everyone enjoyed their choices. Surprised with the quality of food and pleasant environment. Our options in town were limited when it seemed like everyone was closed so we gave this place a try despite several meh reviews. Knowing this going in, we couldn't believe fire tasty the coconut shrimp were. They came out hot with a nice sweet tai chili sauce on side. I do wish there was one or two more pieces for the price, but they tasted great. My wife and I both ordered variations of slow cooked roast beef (Rueben for her and French dip for me), and both sandwiches were genuinely delicious. Came here last night for the first time. My wife had a roast beef special #2 which was awesome. I got the snake sauce wings. I told the bartender I like mine fried to hell and back. Ate here last week with the fam. Loved the outdoor seating in beautiful Mount Gretna, and that the deck could accommodate a large number of people. Our waitress was very attentive and caring. The food was good as well. I got a roast beef sandwich which was tasty, but a little cold which was disappointing. I also got to taste the seafood pasta which was also good but a little bland and soggy. I had a small portion of salmon which was delicious and melted in my mouth. Stopped in on a Sunday evening for dinner and was disappointed. Years ago this place was a reliable dinner spot with good food, service and a nice atmosphere. Not so anymore. Two burgers were well over cooked (asked for medium and got no pink) and on dried out buns. Boneless wings were not completely cooked through. All of this on top of a loud outdoor bar and a waitress who seemed annoyed we interrupted her workplace socializing to ask for more plates (who gives two appetizer plates for a table with a party of four). read more

I wanted to message you because I just brought my family out for dinner this evening. We had a party of 20. I hoped to be outside and together. That didn't happen. We ended up separated and inside. No problem. Spent $700 on dinner. The servers inside were nice and the food was good. Decided to go out after dinner to the outside bar for a drink. They were rude, Stared at there watches like we were a bother them, left the bar area till we were leaving. A couple came in as we were leaving and they came back in and were super nice. We were in the area and wanted a place to eat that had outside seating to enjoy the beautiful weather. This place has a nice selection of food and drinks. The service was fast. Tried to go a second time and The only downside was Clam night we didn't even attempt to go another time as the parking lot was crowded and a line was formed. Apparently the locals know what days to go for the menu specials. The atmosphere was very nice It is located in the Forrest known as Mount Gretna Camp meeting which is historical. First time here, decided to try for our anniversary. Our server was top notch and provided excellent service. The food, not so much. The honey glazed salmon was over cooked and the glaze was pretty much nonexistent, broccoli side was steamed with no seasoning, crab cakes had a lot a filler, but would have been good with a sauce to dip in. Met 2 other couples for dinner on the deck last night. Maybe it was on off night, not sure but I doubt we'll return. Deck was pleasant, but that's all the positive I have. Server was inattentive. No silverware, no salt and pepper, no napkins. Food lacked flavor and was cold when it arrived. I think they forgot the vodka in my orange crush. One of the worst burgers I've ever been served. Lovely ambiance on a nice fall evening outside on the patio. We made reservations and had come on the recommendation of my son's boss who highly recommended it. We ordered the Whiskey Relaxer (delish) and had cheesesteak egg rolls and crab pretzel for apps. Very good! Dinners were Fish and Chips, Crab Cake Sandwich and my son ordered the Weiner Schnitzel entree special. He had never had it before and when it arrived, it clearly was Brats - NOT Schnitzel. He was happy with the meal as it had the same sides but the waiter looked at me like I was nuts. I explained a Schnitzel was a veal cutlet and these were sausages (another special on the menu for Octoberfest) - again, blank stares! It was pretty funny! All in all, decent service, food was ok, and the ambiance was great! We would go back. Oh, and it was my son's birthday which I indicated when I made the reservations, when we arrived and again when the waiter came to get our drink order. We are newer to area and have heard locals brag about it and decided to try deck today.We were sat at the only table on deck with no umbrella or shade (90 degrees) while there were 4 other tables around us empty that had shade. We asked hostess she said to ask our waitress she then went to ask hostess and we were told it was to difficult to move tables for the wait staff (literally 5 feet away was shaded table). We had to ask (beg) repeated for more water and when my husband"s food came it was just a bowl of chicken but was listed as an entree on the specials menu- no attempt to make anything right was told read the menu that's what it says. read more

I have been a regular customer of this place for over 20 years. I really enjoy the food here. Drinks are good as well. It has a large open deck with seating, and a full sized bar that is under a roof in case it rains. The upper deck is covered with a canopy of trees, very unique. At night the lights are hanging everywhere, and wrapped around trees, making it quite cozy. It is a very nice atmosphere, and live music on the deck. The inside is rustic and nice. 070217 11:00am Certainly had worse..... Certainly had better. The atmosphere and decor was pleasant but the brunette at the door seemed to have a crappy disposition. The place was pretty empty, so I'm not sure why the brunette at the door was abrupt about us having a reservation. Emma our server was very friendly and kind. I had the Taco salad. Folks, it royally sucked. The chili was like a paste spread. Like it was canned chili. Most of the taco salad was lettuce. it tasted like a child's funeral. The shell was the best part. I also had an order of mozzarella sticks. You can't really screw them up so they were good. My beautiful wife who chose to come here, had the Capri salad. Healthy, delicious and she loved the way it was presented. So big points there. The place was pretty empty until about 11:45 then the seniors came in by the droves. I'm guessing either church let out or the nearby 55+ development opened their gate. Their loud happy cackling, and jangling of costume jewelry was pretty loud. So it was an OK experience here. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again. And if I did, I'd stick with just the appetizers and drinks. And if your planning to eat a meal there, call first about reservations. read more

Was there on Saturday night September 18, 2021. We ordered the Bavarian pretzel appetizer. The pretzel was still cold and frozen in the ends. I ordered the chicken parmigiana over pasta. My niece ordered the same thing. Both of our chicken breasts were burnt. I mean black burnt. It was not parmigiana. It was just burnt non breaded chicken with a slab of cheese thrown on top. We both sent them back. My niece reordered the chicken breast parmigiana and this time it came out half cook. It was still pink inside. I just reordered a bacon cheeseburger with no lettuce, no tomato and no Mayo medium well. Received my order and had everything on it Mayo lettuce and tomato. Also my burger was not medium well but burnt once more. It should not be black if I ordered it medium well. Very very disappointing meal. read more

We drive 45 min to go to the Hideaway which was always one of our favorites. Last night my granddaughter, who loves to plan ahead and read the menu and planned her order before we got there, ordered a baked potato and was told they ran out. A little later the table next to us ordered baked potatoes and got them. When I mentioned this to our waitress she said they must have found some!!! She was unapologetic. Then my granddaughter ordered the dessert she had been looking forward to all day and waitress said they ran out. Again, no apology. The salmon dinners ordered were so/so. Not at all as we used to enjoy here. I told girls at front to convey my dissatisfaction to the Manager and was met with blank stares. You can have an off night at a Restaurant but this one apparently does not care when you spend a lot and get a substandard meal read more

I have been to the Hideaway off and on for years. So I understand there is a food chain supply problem everywhere, but the server we had obviously had very little experience. I had my eye on a selection and when I went to order, our server said, "oh let me check, I think we are out of that" so she looks on her whatever handheld thingy you call it and says, yes its off the menu tonight. Telling us before hand what has been 86'd would have been the normal thing to do. So I needed time to figure what I wanted. She came back to our table every minute to check. I was getting pissed off because nothing was appealing to me and she must have come by 6 times. So I finally chose a salad then when she asked if I wanted anything on it (protein) I said no because there is bacon on it and that was plenty. So while waiting we are seated under speakers that are very loud and playing the most annoying heavy metal song. I asked the manager to change the music and he said he couldn't, but could turn it down. I still don't understand why the music couldn't be changed but others around us were annoyed also. He turned it down , then better music came on. So out comes our food. Salad that was missing the bacon and the avocado! My husband had a hamburger and the bun was so stale it was falling apart just sitting there. So now the server doesn't come to our table for a while and when she does I tell her about my salad, no bacon, no Avocado, if I had known I would have ordered the protein. Her response, " oh I'm sorry, I will let them know in the kitchen ". Really? Not, I'll get you those items right away for your salad? I never in my life have been to any restaurant that they didn't go back and bring out the correct food. Now to put the icing on the cake, as I was walking out I saw the dish I had originally wanted at a table as I went past. The next night some friends of mine were there and said it was not good either. So the Funcks buy these old local patronized places and some are ok and some are not. They also ruined The Quentin Tavern. Destroyed its menu and eliminated brioche rolls. What? Burgers on these horrible Pa Dutch heavy potato rolls, that's just wrong! So sick of all these Funcks owned places. If I want a chain restaurant I'll go to one but I don't. The Rising Sun is probably a better Funcks if you're going to patronize one of their places. read more

We went to the Hide-A-Way for a mid-week to break to enjoy the deck/patio and some live music. The outdoor space is great--the deck better than the patio--because it's pretty much nestled up to the forest of Mt. Gretna. Despite other reviews, we actually had a very attentive waitress and our order came very quickly. The menu is vast, but full of standard bar food. This is the type of place where I would avoid an entree. We both selected the same roast beef sandwich. It was bad. Dry. Tasteless. Cheeseless. Flavorless. We both paid and upcharge for sides--me $1.50 for fries and my boyfriend $2 for onion rings. The fries were limp, soggy and barely warm. What made the food even worse was the swarm of gnats that attacked with a vengeance the minute it was placed on the table. No fault of the restaurant, but nonetheless made the dinner even worse. Prices weren't necessarily high, but they were high for the quality of food. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back, but I would go back strictly for a beer on the deck and would do dinner elsewhere. read more
