Very nice hotel I would have given a 5 star rating but the breakfast they had was only during the week the weekend is continental breakfast which was nice. The door to our room didn't work very well ended up open all night but we felt safe leaving in locked. The campus is Beautiful! Okay. Let's go over "hotel" vs. "conference center". Let's start by noticing that this one is on the Johns Hopkins campus. It's there to support the university's teaching & research. It has facilities for meetings & short courses. Lots of people are coming from the local area (Exhibit A: large parking structure), but some need to overnight. When this one was built the standard accommodation on universities was the dorm room so by comparison to that, these rooms are palatial. But still, IT'S A CONFERENCE CENTER. Now sometimes universities will rent out unused rooms. Mainly they think of this as a community service because where else are you going to stay in Mt. Washington? Maybe they turn an extra buck or two but that's not why they are here. So before you book here for some inlaw's wedding banquet, set your expectations appropriately. & BTW, the village is a half mile walk on a paved trail. Very pleasant. read more

I stayed here for a conference so this is for both the hotel and conference center. I'd give the conference center 4 stars and the hotel 2 stars, so it averages out to 3 and you can read whichever is more relevant to your needs :) I think it's a really nice conference center. The area is really beautiful, the facilities themselves (i.e. the conference rooms) are clean and well-appointed, the staff was great, and the food was excellent. I loved that they kept us well-supplied with delicious meals, snacks, drinks and caffeine throughout! The hotel left something to be desired. The staff was really nice and friendly and the rooms are clean, but they are very dorm-like in a lot of ways. Definitely good enough for staying at the conference though since I had no free time! :) Overall had a nice stay here and would recommend it, especially for a conference or meeting. read more

Stayed at the Mt Washington Conference Center Hotel for a night while in the area for meeting. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly and was checked in quickly. Things went down hill from there. Went up to my room and was greeted at the door by a guy who was already staying in that room. Headed back down to the lobby to advise them of the error. Once I get to the lobby there is no one manning the desk. I ring the bell, nothing. so I take a seat and wait. 25 minutes later the clerk finally walks off the elevator. I explain the situation to her and she assigns me another room. I head up to that room and the key card doesn't work. Back to the elevator and down to the lobby. The clerk reprograms the key card and I head back up to my second room. Open the door and walk into a room that isn't ready to be occupied. The beds are both stripped, no towels in the bathroom, etc. Turn around and head back down to the lobby. Again, no one at the desk. After another 10 or so minutes the night clerk comes in. I explain the situation to him and he assigns me to a third room. I head up to that room and finally have one I can actually stay in. Take out the confusion with the rooms and it's probably a 3 star rating. Jerk me around for an hour when all I want to do is go to sleep after a 3 hour drive down and it costs you 2 stars. On the bright side my company no longer uses Hotwire to book hotels. read more

This is a really quiet, calm location - hard to believe you only about 8 miles north of downtown Baltimore. Mount Washington is a nice little village. It's a bit of a hike down steep (and unlit) stairs down to the village from the hotel, but worth a walk around. The hotel itself is 80s era and has not been renovated in a very long time. Public areas are clean, but just old. The room itself had decent bedding but was again, just really old. Laminate everything, including bathroom counters. Grimey tile floor in the bathroom. No services available in the hotel - no dining at all. It mentioned free breakfast somewhere but I sure didn't see it and it wasn't mentioned by the staff. There are dining options down in the village, but not a ton of choices. Thanks for the flat panel LCD tv - could we actually get some HD signal to go with that? Broadcast channels (ABC, Fox, etc) didn't work at all the first night, then I was able to get NBC the next 2 nights - but that was it. Booked this on Hotwire as a 3.5 star hotel. Ridiculous. More like a 2.5 hotel -- and that's giving credit largely for the location. The 3 star hotel in the same Hotwire zone (University) is a much nicer property in a (busier but) better location for less $. Won't try this one again. read more

Not a standard hotel, probably only has about 40 rooms, so you can't expect the same thing as you would in a traditional hotel. However, the staff here was amazingly helpful. The room was clean, the grounds are gorgeous & it's a quick walk to the Mt. Washington village, which is an artsy-local flavor neighborhood. If you need all of the amenities of a hotel (room service, concierge, etc), skip this. But if you want a nice hotel with a friendly staff, this place is perfect. The staff was very polite, it's not a four or five-star hotel so understand that, and it is not priced like it is pretending to be. It can use some updating but I wouldn't hesitate to go again. The grounds are scenic and well kept, it is surrounded by a nice residential area, our room was clean, the TV was adequate and it had a small fridge. Parking was free and close by. We had a small balcony off our room with nice views of the Octagon building and the greenery. We did not eat there but just down the road, you have a Lil area where there is a Whole Foods, Starbucks, a wine store, a nice Pub, and some cool little restaurants. It is a 15 min drive to JHU, which served our purpose well. The website shows a very well equipped gym which I did not get a chance to use this trip. For us it was a very pleasant experience. read more

Stayed here in April for a conference. My room was booked through the conference coordinator. I live in Virginia, but did not want to fight commuter traffic every day to go back and forth. Conference Monday - Friday. I checked in, all was good. Room decent, people pleasant. Checked out Friday, paid by bill (corporate card). No problem, right? WRONG! Later get Credit Card Bill and they charged an extra night, for 'early departure'. Really? My reservation was for Monday-Friday. Apparently they had me down as leaving on Saturday. Which, by the way they never mentioned upon Check-in or Check-out. And, by bill upon checkout, did not reflect an extra day stay! CHECK YOUR BILLS. This is pretty shady business dealings if you ask me and I will never stay here again and I will spread the word far and wide as well. read more

Needed a hotel room for one night and searched Hotwire for vacancies. Searched for 3.5 star hotels in the Baltimore area and received information for such a hotel near Johns Hopkins University. I purchased the offer and received the Mt. Washington Conference Center, which I immediately disliked upon viewing their website. Also, Hotwire sent a text requesting my first impression of the hotel of the two choices I selected the sad face. The first room I received, the carpet was well worn, the bed spread had many visible lumps, and the supposedly fitted white sheet was dirty tan and spoiled with hair. I immediately requested a different room. I received another room on the same floor with the same issues of very well worn carpet, bed spread with many visible lumps, and a discolored fitted white sheet. I slept on top of the flat sheet which looked much better than the fitted sheet. I was not happy with the second room but since I was only staying overnight, I dealt with the situation. The bathroom had an updated vanity but the tub was badly stained from ongoing use, as well as the toilet with a peeling seat. The staff is friendly and somewhat knowledgeable about the property. The Mt. Washington Conference Center needs a major renovation and not just select furnishings. Mt. Washington Conference Center is an old outdated hotel that should not rate higher than 2 stars. I am too frustrated with Hotwire and wish they would properly designate star ratings and operate using it. read more

This is a solid three stars hotel. I love the location, there is a Whole Foods and a Postal Office near by, and it is about 10min driving distance north of Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. The room services is bad, however I think the hotel has great potential to improve. There were days that missing clean towels, soap, or complete housekeeping. Mr. Birkey, one of the hotel managers, had delivered my concerns to the staff. The room then became in a good order. We were surprised that he even gave us three complimentary coupons for their Café breakfast. Overall, we enjoyed the stay, we love the view, the tranquility and friendly people. read more

Forgot to update my review. Initially gave this place 4 or 5 stars when we first visited. But had the worst experience the 2nd time. We book this place whenever we go to Moonrise Festival. It's a nice spot, close to the venue and not too expensive. However, the receptionist accused my friend of stealing something from the snack room. He was so sure that my friend stole a chocolate bar and put it in his pocket but that was impossible to happen. My friend's clothes didn't have any pockets. We asked him to prove it to us by showing camera footage since there were cameras in that room. When confronted, the receptionist said he was just joking and tried to stop talking about that matter any further. It was a serious accusation so we were not having it. Instead of apologizing, the receptionist was trying to get rid of us by arguing about a friend who was heating up his soup in the microwave in the snack room. He said we can't be there that long, it's in and out. Heat what you have to heat and leave. It was so obvious that he knew he messed up with his accusation and was just trying to get rid of us. Then later on, he changed what he said and said he wasn't kidding about seeing my friend stealing something. We got into further argument because he kept flipflopping. He called the cop on us because we won't leave. Get that bullshit out of here. Next day, we asked to talk to the manager or whever was supervising the place. All she had to tell us was sorry if there was a misunderstanding, but not one apology about the false accusation and that receptionist calling the cops because he couldn't handle what he caused. Do not stay at the Mount Washington Conference Center. I was locked out of my room for more than 30 minutes due to a faulty lock. One staff person told me there has been a problem with the locks for months but management will not fix the problem. The hotel is understaffed on the weekends. The breakfast choices are extremely poor on the weekends. read more

This hotel is fine. It's located on the John Hopkins campus, which is beautiful. As other reviewers have said, this place used to be a dorm. You can definitely still tell it was a dorm at one point even though it has been nicely remodeled. The rooms were small, and they had big balconies. Recently adopted by Johns Hopkins, this is a conference center that has a bit of history as part of the grounds of an old Woman's college that ended in the civil war; one of the original "octagon" buildings remains. Very convenient that this is right adjacent to the Mt. Washington light rail stop, directly from the airport. However, good luck finding the entrance if you are on foot!! There are 3 possible ways up: 1) take the trail behind the ceramics parking lot with the bridge with a sign marked NO TRESPASSING; 2) Walk up the driveway without a sidewalk and risk getting run over or 3) walk even further past the driveway and go up a steep sidewalk that doubles back to the stated trail #1: this one is UNMARKED. The hotel rooms feel like old dorm rooms with a little lipstick: the toilets are low with very difficult handles to flush, the sink handles are very hard to turn, the amenities are basic and the closet is dusty, but there is free WIFI. The center is in a lush green area with surrounding trees that make you feel like you are in the mountains, and some of the dining rooms have a quaint old feel. Meeting rooms were decent, not highly technologically upgraded but they did have power strips for computers so you could stay connected while you are learning. read more

Pretty solid. Was here for an overnight for work. The grounds are beautiful, and the location is very convenient to get to the areas I was heading to the following day. Front desk staff was incredibly friendly and the hotel itself was quiet. There were a few things that could use some updating. The rooms themselves are pretty dated. Maybe even carbon dated. The alarm clock was produced within 10 years of my birth. That's pretty old, although it still managed to wake me up. Everything was clean, and the balcony was nice, so that's okay. Breakfast was pretty limited, as was seating in the breakfast area. There were only a few tables in the area where the food was. Overall this hotel served the purpose and I would stay here again if I needed to be in the area. read more

My family was in Baltimore for a funeral. We got 1 suite in the Octagon building and 2 rooms in the newer conference building. The Octagon is historic and quaint. I love old architecture. We had a pleasant stay. Friendly staff. Game room on 4th floor ended up being a great spot for the family to gather. Our suite was large and comfortable. Beautiful grounds. Perfect to stroll and reflect. Nice breakfast in the McCauley building. Now a few negatives: breakfast in the McCauley building is not available on weekends. Air conditioning / temp in rooms is a bit flaky. Stove in suite, but no pans. A microwave would have been better to have. Housekeeping: not so good!! Thumbs down!! My daughter had a towel hanging in her bathroom that looked like a car mechanic wiped his hands on it. Wtf? We got back from the funeral to find fresh towels and trash emptied, but bed not made. Wtf?? Would we stay here again? Maybe. Lovely area. Lots of conveniences all around. Reasonably priced rooms. Free parking. Solid 3 points. read more

We just stayed at this hotel while visiting Loyola college. It was great. Very convenient. Not anything within a walkable distance but lovely setting. There is a garden and historic octagon house on property. The town at bottom of hill has a few restaurants. Nearby is a Whole Foods and Starbucks in an old renovated/ restored cotton mill. Very cool. Front desk was great. Very accommodating. Good value. My complaint is balconies need to be power washed. Also - surprised they still offer smoking rooms vs non smoking rooms. You can smell it a bit in the hallway. read more

We were recently in Baltimore with several family members for a wedding. We needed a place to stay where our family members could be together and where we could host a catered rehearsal dinner for 45 guests. We decided to stay in the oldest hotel building on the property, called the Octagon. It is a lovely historic 8-sided building with 4 floors, and 8 suites. The rooms are as expected; old, historic, well-furnished and decorated with period looking appeal, and the rooms are quite large. As an added bonus, the surrounding grounds are simply beautiful. We took a couple of very enjoyable walks through the grounds and into the adjoining village of quaint shops. We rented all 8 suites of the Octagon for our long weekend ... so we saw every room. We also hosted our catered dinner on the 1st floor of the Octagon. The setting is historic, intimate, and timeless. We were not surprised by any of the accommodations, because we had walked through the property 2 months earlier with the event coordinator before we booked the venue. As several other reviewers on Yelp have noted -- yes; the property is older, yes; it is not spotless, and yes; there isn't a huge breakfast. However, the Octagon is still a beautiful, historic, and well accommodating hotel. It is not a Ritz-Carlton -- it is a building that was built in the early 1800's, and could use a little maintenance and a thorough deep cleaning. However, we chose the Octagon because we appreciated the old architecture and charm. We were not disappointed. We were well accommodated. I agree with others on this forum, that the accommodations are a solid 3-stars, so we managed our expectations accordingly. Although the facilities might be 3-stars, we are rating our experience as 5 stars because of the personnel. The real joy of our weekend was our experience with all of the event staff. They were 5-star all the way. Everyone we interfaced with, from the Hotel's Front Desk staff to our event coordinator, Mr. Bruce Wagner, were gracious, caring, kind, professional, prompt, and capable. Mr. Wagner is simply a top-shelf individual. He is the type of person you always hope will handle your event. He ensured that all of our needs were met, and contacted us often to review plans and potential problem areas. He arranged for the catered meal and guided the event staff through their duties. Our dinner was perfectly orchestrated. The dining room, the table settings, the food layout and service was top notch, and the meal was perfectly prepared. Our guests were very well served and the food was delicious (and everyone over ate!). Simply put, we could not have been more pleased with the accommodations, the staff, and the service. If we have an opportunity to use this hotel and event center again, we will not hesitate. We believe the Mt. Washington Hotel and Conference Center is truly a hidden gem in Baltimore. The room was perfectly fine: what I would expect given the rate, although the bed was a bit small. No complaints regarding the room. Nice balcony. The service at the front desk was pretty bad though. Very disorganized. We had to wait forty minutes to check in, because the front desk clerk was dealing with four irate people in front of us. At first I felt quite sympathetic toward the desk clerk, but then my patience began to wear thin. Two people ahead of us were supposed to have rooms, but they weren't ready yet, so they were hanging around with their bags in the lobby, grumbling. One man was completely berserk because they had no room available for him and his family even though they made a reservation two weeks ago. They sent him to another hotel located over 20 minutes away, but the process was extremely disorganized and took forever. We were at the hotel for a wedding, and we ran into some other wedding guests who told us that they had problems with their reservations as well (the hotel thought they were checking out a day earlier than they were, and their room key stopped working and needed to be reactivated). We were so happy to just get our room without any issue besides waiting 40 minutes for service. read more

Stayed here for a conference and it was lovely. The staff were very friendly. I was lucky to get a room in the octagon which was unique and spacious with a beautiful view. The bed seemed new and was very comfortable. The grounds are a great place to walk and relax. The nearby neighborhood is quaint with a few great restaurants (I recommend Ethel's Creole Kitchen). I cannot tell if this is a three star hotel or not based upon a standard hotel rating system. However, if it is a three star hotel, I will give it five stars! I needed a room at the last minute and they were able to accommodate me the same day for four nights. We arrived very late and the clerk was waiting for us. The room was clean and had a very long desk with two chairs so both my spouse and I could work on our computers (free wi-fi) comfortably and with plenty of room to spare. There was a balcony with chairs that overlooked a garden and fountain. The grounds are beautiful and the area is pretty quiet and peaceful even though the property is adjacent to a "village" shopping area and a metro line. The people who worked there were very helpful and responsive. A gym adjacent to the building was a real gym. There was also an indoor track (small) and a basketball court, locker rooms and showers. The breakfast provided to guests was adequate with good coffee and a variety of traditional prepared breakfast foods such as yogurt, hard boiled eggs, breakfast bars and bagels. The ONLY issue with this place - and it is not worthy of downgrading - is that the rooms are dated - the furniture is old looking and the bathrooms have tile floors and old fixtures. The bedding is very nice - the same or similar duvets as a Hampton Inn has. I will definitely come back to stay here. read more

Horrible customer service and I haven't even checked in yet. Doubtful this will redeem itself. Need an early check in and they're very quick to want an additional $75 dollars for anything before one even though there's plenty of rooms available. Can clearly see why there's plenty of rooms available now. Phone staff hung up twice this morning and now we're very rude "oh well you can pay an additional 75$". The fee would be one thing, but the fact I was lied to three times about rooms be available three times I called is another. read more

On the plus side, very clean, nice staff, surprising location that feels very safe and the hotel itself has many things to offer. The conference has failed their last inspection. The place is dirty and their are multiple rodent traps throughout the kitchen. I've noticed the chef at times scratching where he had no business and didn't wash his hands. You should save some of the drinks for the customers. read more
