I've been coming to this place for at least a decade and have always loved it. Unfortunately, the last 3 times I've been here in the last year, the service has gotten really bad. I had a server assume my date and I were asking for one steak even though we were asking for it to be cooked in different ways. We were actually asking for a steak each but she was being very dismissive and not listening. Then after correcting her and getting both out steaks, she continues to rush us as if she needs us to go and we we're even there 30 minutes. The other two times I went they cooked the steak wrong. I always get the steak there and always get it rare. This time the steak came back medium rare and when I pointed it out, they didn't offer to get it correct, instead they insisted it was rare and told me they could have me speak to management. By then I was pretty fed up because my friend and I felt we were being rushed despite being there 15 minutes and it was not a full house. The people are rude and racially insensitive. Mua's atmosphere is a complete vibe in its own unique way. The place is dimly lit with lots of wall decors, loud music, and two floors. For the two occasions I've been here, they've sat me on the second floor, which I really liked because I get to see a great view of the downstairs and its decorated walls. FOOD: - Shiitake Mushroom Crostini: I think this appetizer is a bit overpriced ($16) for the amount they give (4 pieces). The mushroom was creamy and delicious and the arugula salad was tasty as well. However, I wish they added more goat cheese. - Chicken Wings: This might be my favorite from the dishes we ordered. From the menu, the flavor is quite odd (fish sauce, chili, & mint), which are flavors I love (separately), but it was intriguing enough for me to order. The balance of saltiness from the fish sauce, the tanginess from the citrus, and spice from the chili was phenomenal and the minty flavor added a great kick. - The Hamburger: The burger option seemed to be out of place in the menu, but it was very juicy. The food was well seasoned and delicious! Any seafood at Mua is going to be amazing. I had the crab po'boy was nice and soft, plus where else can you get a sandwich with a whole crab? Highly recommend trying it! The calamari was also a hit. But the star at the table was the fried chicken (not pictured)! The chicken is fried to perfection and was honestly finger licking good. When reading the reviews they seem to be all over the place. Those that love it really love and those that don't really don't. I personally think it is very solid. Going in I was on full alert based on the reviews I read. When we walked in there is the bar before you even get to the hostess stand. The bartender told us it was happy hour for about 45 more minutes, so we quickly grabbed drinks. The drinks that are normally $15'ish were $10 for happy hour. He was really nice and very engaging making jokes. Moving on to the host. She lacked personality but seemed okay at her job. We needed a high chair and she seemed a little bothered that she had to move the seating around to accommodate. The vibe- I loved the vibe. Some reviews talked about the loud music. I found the music to be just fine. We had 7 in our party and I could hear everyone just fine. The food was solid. I ordered the mussels and frites and they were very good. Some reviews mentioned the frites being soggy since they are on top of the broth and mussels, I can see why someone may feel that way, but I think it was fine. BEWARE ESP WOMEN. I had a very unfortunate experience. I like the drinks here so I usually sit at the bar. Upon arriving, I let the bartender know that I was going to use the bathroom so ordered my drink and food and told him I would be back . when I came back after about 10 or 15 minutes My drink had been sitting out at the bar while other were around. As a woman I definitely wasn't going to drink that had been sitting out so as a precautionary measure I told the bartender that I did not want the drink.Unbeknownst to me I was still charged for the beverage and when I brought it up to the bartender, I was told if I ordered it, I would have to pay for it no matter if I touched it or not. I tried explaining to him that the drink I have been sitting at the bar while I was in the restroom and I didn't feel safe drinking it. I found his approach very disheartening , alarming and rude.Being that the drink was sat out at the bar while I was in the bathroom I should not have been hassled about a refund. Returned here after a long hiatus. I had the mussels and frites. The huge portion comes a single bowl with the fries on top. A nice presentation but the problem is the fries get soggy after about 3 minutes. Who wants soggy fries? Jeez. No bread or crostini to sop up the fantastic broth. So I had to ask for bread. They didn't give me a mussel fork so used the shells to grab the meat. Several of the mussels weren't quite open so I tossed them. We visited MUA yesterday for my grandfathers 40th day death anniversary. What was supposed to be a memorable time for my family became a huge disappointment. We came in with a large party of 20 people, and from the start, it was clear this restaurant was not equipped--or willing--to handle it. We would have went elsewhere, but 8 years ago we celebrated my grandfathers 70th birthday at MUA, so it had a sentimental memory behind it. First off, we weren't allowed to order drinks at the bar, which was baffling. On top of that, they refused to honor happy hour prices at our table. No explanation, just a flat-out "no." The food didn't make up for the lackluster service either. The shrimp was dry and overcooked--definitely not fresh. Customer service was almost non-existent. Our server had zero emotion, zero enthusiasm, and barely interacted with us beyond the basics. For a party of our size, we expected at least a little attention and professionalism. Instead, it felt like we were an inconvenience. Lucky for her 20% gratuity was added to our bill, which was definitely not deserved. I've been to MUA many times and have loved it. But recently, management has become racist, strange, and unkind. Specifically the white male waiter, who also may be the manager, has become hostile to black patrons. Recently, I went there for my partners birthday and our table spent over 600 dollars, but we were still treated rude and dismissively. This definitely ruined her birthday and was also just strange to see. From threatening to charge us for plates for our outside dessert, to the manager walking around our table in order to intimidate us, it truly sucked. Won't be going there again. Our group sat down to enjoy our dinner and our server Juliana took her time to come by and greet us and take our drink order. Drinks took some time to come out which is to be expected. Once our second round of appetizers came out I tried to get her attention once again to get a couple more sharing plates and once again received the finger to give her a second. She then came over and asked what I needed and I asked for plates. We continued enjoying our appetizers and waited for our order to be taken for entrees which was another thing. One of our friends tried to order the shrimp and she looked at them in disgust and said "that's an appetizer" to which they then felt obliged to order an entree, the fried chicken, which they only ate one piece. After she took our order I tied to get her attention and let her know that it was our friends birthday to which she mouthed "I know". We got our entrees pretty quickly and plates were removed as needed. Eventually dessert menus came out but we didn't want anything as the service had been terrible. We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. Finally, we had the chance to. We loved the ambiance, the music and full bar. However, the food was unfortunate. I tried the lamb shank that was basically stew with extremely chewy lamb. It was awful and I didn't eat my meal. My wife had the chicken that was under flavored and overcooked. My 1st drink and food order was just fine. But I was charged $23 for 5 shrimp. I asked for a side of shrimp to add to the salad. Mind you the salad was $13, when I asked the bartender about it. The response was that is the price. Let me be clear I wasn't informed of a cost for the shrimp. But let's be clear the cost of 5 shrimp is a WHOLE meal to which I didn't get and there was NO concession to the cost. With that I will NOT patronize this establishment again. If you imagine a large club and a nice restaurant, then that's basically what Mua is like. The ambiance is fun with good music, but it's also really loud and you'll have to come in with the expectation that it's gonna be hard to hear the people at your table. I was only able to have a conversation with the people directly next to me and in front of me haha. The food and drinks made up for it though! Evad'o cocktail ($14): This had peach ciroc vodka, peach purée, pineapple juice, and lime. It was honestly one of the best drinks I've had with a really strong peach flavor. No Cheese Mac n' Cheese ($11): I wasn't looking forward to a vegan dish, but this ended up being my favorite of the night. This uses a butternut squash purée and it was SO creamy and addicting to eat. Brussel Sprouts w/ Brown Butter ($11): Crispy brussel sprouts with good balance of flavor and some nuttiness from the brown butter. I only wish the dish was bigger! Chicken Liver Pâté ($7): This was probably the least memorable dish we got. I wish there was more pâté and balance of flavor with the pickled pear. Both the food and drinks were good at this place. The music was mixed with a live DJ. While we were inside the restaurant everything was great. However, the outside experience is another story. While I know that it shouldn't affect the rating of the restaurant, I feel that the complete experience will dictate whether you go back or not. We had put our name on the Yelp waitlist (loved that they had that) and arrived in plenty of time. However, it took us about 20+ minutes of circling to finally find a spot that we could squeeze into. After dinner we came out to a smashed window! Apparently all the cars on one side of the street had their windows smashed. At the same time there was an armed robbery that had just happened up the street. The police told us to just make a report online and leave the area immediately. The inside dining area consists of a main hall and an upstairs area. Both are fun, the music is loud in both. The tables are a little cramped next to each other. The bar is nice and they've got a few fun in house cocktails you can try. The beer and wine choices are nice as well. The food is nice, nothing out of this world, but it's good. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a mediocre experience. Made a reservation via Yelp and our table was ready upon arrival. The restaurant had the following rules during the reservation stage: - 2 hour time limit - Credit card required for reservations - Changes or cancellation within 24 hours would result in a $20/person fee. - Only full parties can be seated. - Late arrivals of 15+ minutes may not be honored. *phew Upon arrival to the restaurant, there were more rules: - modifications to the menu would be declined - Had to text back the restaurant confirming the reservation within 1 hour of dining... Now that all of the rules are out of the way, the restaurant was a repurposed warehouse, a la nightclub. As the night went on, the music got louder and more obnoxious...definitely felt like eating inside a VERY LOUD club that I couldn't really hear my dining partner?!? Our server came by with suggestions and take our order. Surprisingly, our dishes all came out within minutes of ordering. (We did say it would be okay to have them bring out dishes as they came out.) Started off with the Shiitake Mushroom / herb goat cheese crostini, arugula and it was delicious! The mix and blend of flavors definitely made this dish stand out. The No Cheese "Mac n' Cheese" / butternut squash, cream was a unique and light spin to a traditional dish. The Beef Bone Marrow / cornichon, toast was a tasty treat although the toast didn't taste too fresh... The Chicken Milanese / lemon, caper, shallot, arugula came out as a huge portion. The chicken was relatively juicy and this was perfect for sharing. Ended off the meal with Bread Pudding / creme anglaise, raspberry sauce which may have been the highlight of the meal as it came out hot and fresh! ~$60/head after tax and gratuity with tons of leftovers. We ordered drinks which tasted fresh and not watered down (read: strong). We both ordered 'My Fella is Hella' and it was very Mule-adjacent which is our go-to, but different enough with the elderflower etc. Ordered the same for another round, that's how good it was. Our appitizers and entrees: bone marrow, Caesar wedge salad, fried chicken/cornbread, pork ribs, no-cheese mac n cheese, and bread pudding for dessert. Highlights of the meal were the pork ribs (tender and had a nice asian fusion taste, like chinese 5 spice), mac n cheese (TJ's reduced guilt tasting, but gourmet), wedge salad (sooo so umami) and bread pudding. The fried chicken was fine, but as a big fan of Jollibee-esque fried chicken, it just wasn't a standout to us. Would skip the chicken next time. Service was average, could have been a bit better, but wasn't unpleasant. Hostess was a bit short and seemed stressed, but wasn't rude or unpleasant. They've been on my radar for YEARS, and whenever I make plans to come through, something out of the bizarre cosmic forces destroys that plan. And I kept thinking, "One day..." And ONE DAY finally came through! Coming off Oakland airport, Hubbers and I were headed for another eatery, then we called an audible and said, "What about Mua??" So happy! So SO happy to finally make it here! The only uh-oh we had is that we didn't have reservations. No biggie, we'll wait. But it wasn't bad! We were told the only seating they had available for two was at the bar which worked out well since we much preferred that anyway! Since I've been wanting to come through for some time now, I already knew what I wanted: beef bone marrow. Their menu is interesting. Hubbers and I wanted to try at least six things, but we narrowed it down to four (which is still a lot!) CRISPY POLENTA: I was hesitant to try this because of the spicy tomato sauce, but it was not bad at all! My experience with polenta is extremely limited but this was impressive. FRIED CALAMARI: Surprised Hubbers went for this (he normally skips this. A lot.) made to order hot and crispy. Not too many fillers. Seasoning was above par. And it was PLENTY! BEEF BONE MARROW: I heard "Tadah!" in my head soon as our server set it down in front of us. This dish was pretty! Hubbers and I dug in and smeared some on the perfectly toasted bread. They were generous with this as well. Plenty of marrow inside. The toppings didn't take away any essence of this dish. So happy happy I finally got to try it! SOFTSHELL CRAB PO'BOY: We got this only because I'm a softshell crab fiend. Since the fried polenta's spicy tomato sauce wasn't bad, I expected the same for the aioli that came with this sandwich. Sadly, I was wrong. That aioli was soooo spicy (and abundant) that I barely tasted the crab itself. I couldn't get through a third of it. Since Hubbers was full, he said he's more than happy to have it as a second meal. FOOD: 4.5. SERVICE: 5. Our server was fantastic! VALUE: 4. More than fair! They had no available tables based on reservations so we sat at the bar (small and noisy, with loud music and football on the tv) and were served quickly , thankfully before the reservations came in as they were like three huge parties. Ordered multiple plates to try a little bit of everything. The chicken was a large portion and topped off with arugula . It was not too thick or too thin but just right and not heavily battered, moist with good flavor. They are a bit strict about reservations (they take your card info and charge $25 per head for cancellation after 24 hrs before the date) BUT it does get very busy so make reservations if you know for sure if you can go. They have amazing food in general but my favorite was the catfish dish (comes with rice) and my husband's favorite was the ribs! The sauce was super tasty. We tried beet salad, calamari, bone marrow, poboy burger, shiitake mushrooms, and they were all very delicious! They have a wide range of cocktails, wine, and beer selections as well. I've been to Mua many times and every time has been awesome. Great atmosphere and food! Make sure to make a reservation so you aren't waiting, it's usually pretty busy. Some of my favorite items: 1. Mussels with fries 2. Beef carpaccio 3. Bone marrow This time, we also ordered 4. Crème brûlée 5. Affogato 6. Calamari The mussels with fries (1) is my all-time favorite! I get it every time I come here. It is a tomato-base sauce with mussels and fries on top, covered in aioli. The mussels are drenched in the delicious sauce, and the fries are perfect dipped in the sauce. The portion is also very large, I think its enough to share between 2 people. The beef carpaccio (2) is also delicious - thinly sliced beef with capers, pine nuts, arugula and Parmesan cheese on top. There is a total of 6 slices, so it goes fast, I wish it came with more of it! The bone marrow (3) is also one of my favorites, I am a sucker for bone marrow. This time we also ordered the calamari (6), it was fine, nothing too special. It was tasty though. The crème brûlée (4) and affogato (5) were the perfect way to end our meal.
