I loooved it here! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting. We came on a Sunday morning and were seated right away. Their menu is categorized into two sections, heads (food for the body) or tails (food for the soul), which I thought was so fun. I ended up ordering from the tail side. To drink, I ordered a coffee off of the specials menu, the sunny bunny, which was delicious but also looked very pretty. To eat, I had the brunchwrap. It was insanely good! It was a Crunchwrap-style breakfast wrap with avocado, veggies, eggs, cheese, and hash browns. Sooo good and very filling. My only complaint is that our food actually took really long time to come out, even though the place was relatively empty and there were only three people in our group. But, it was my first time here so I'm not sure if that's a common thing. Either way, I'd recommend!

I was so excited to try this brunch spot! A cozy space tucked in an unassuming area. Upon entry we were greeted by the hostess and seated quickly. I noticed that there was only 1 server for the whole restaurant which caused our service to be a bit delayed but she did a great job nonetheless. The restaurant had a chill vibe with minimal decor and a quiet noise level. Overall I had a great experience and would recommend this brunch spot to anyone! Food: BYOO with Ham, spinach, peppers, and white cheddar. All ingredients were fresh flavorful. A beautifully prepared omelette that was filling and tasty!

The breakfast burritos are amazing. We really enjoyed the casual atmosphere. The Vietnamese iced coffee is great!

This is one of the best brunch places I have been to, in GR. I left today and could not stop thinking about my next visit! I loved that there was a small parking lot, in addition to street parking. We went in around noon and there was a small wait. Once seated, our service was quick. Our server was very friendly. I loved my cappuccino! I had the Fire Toast and my friend got the Angela Martin. We both cleaned our plates. I loved that they used a local place for the bread. Field and Fire is one of my go-to's for fresh baked bread. I can't wait to come back.

Came here on a Saturday around 11:30am and was able to get a table for 2 without a wait. The interior has a nice industrial/rustic vibe to it. There's a counter to order drinks/pastries to go. We ordered the steak and eggs, cinnamon roll pancakes, and brunchwrap with bacon. Everything was a 5/5! They were out of the vanilla custard for the pancakes, and I asked if it was still the same price; at first I was told yes, but then they ended up taking 15% off, so that was nice. The brunchwrap came with a garlic aioli which went surprisingly well with it since there's crispy latke inside! Definitely will be coming back here when I'm in the area.

Mudpenny has a couple of locations around Grand Rapids. This downtown location is in an interesting location! Upon driving the the location, I wasn't sure Google Maps had taken me to the right place... but it did. It just felt like it was in the middle of a very industrial location. I got the Patatas Bravas and it was good! It was a flavorful dish, and it was presented beautifully. Honestly, I wish they had two eggs in that dish, instead of just one. The percentage of the eggs vs the potatoes was a bit off for me. I finished the egg in a flash, and the rest of the time I was just eating potatoes, which constituted at least 85% of the dish. But the dish was still good! The waiters there were really great though. Super friendly and helpful. The ambience was cute and clean. There is street parking!

Looking for your next brunch spot? I hit up the GR location of Mudpenny for the first time this weekend, and they checked off all my brunch needs! They're not a huge place, so I was pretty shocked at how easy it was to get a table on a Saturday morning. I also didn't realize they had their restaurant on one side and coffee/cafe on the other, but I thought it was definitely convenient for people who just wanted to drop by and grab a pastry and a latte! I tried their pistachio twist latte and it was *chefs kiss*. Not too sweet, but perfectly flavorful. For food, I ordered the Kevin Malone breakfast burrito. This boi was thick, and the fact that I managed to eat the whole thing is a testament to how tasty it was I added a little hot sauce for an extra kick, and 10/10 would recommend. My friend had the muddy cristo (and I ended up eating her leftovers so I can comment on it ). The perfect take on a monte cristo!!! I ate it without the syrup that's served on the side, and the french toast pulled its own weight in sweetness.

Found this place and decided to try it for breakfast. It's nice inside. They have a full coffee bar. I had a regular coffee which was good. The eggs Benedict was perfectly prepared. The server was very friendly. My only criticism is the high prices. It was almost $30 counting the tip. That is very expensive for breakfast. The portions are very big and I left full. I would definitely come back.

This literally filled me up the whole day. I chose the brioche for my French toast bread, and almost subbed the ham for a different meat (not a big ham fan). Glad I stuck with the o.g sandwich. The only thing I'd take away next time is the aioli/mayo sauce that's on here. I just feel like that flavor component didn't pair as well with the ham/cheese/syrup flavors already happening. It comes with a fried egg as part of the sandwich; I'll have to remember to ask for it sunny side up next time. Overall, very happy with this "to-go" order.

Parking lot behind the restaurant. Enter by the coffee bar and barista area. It's a chilled place. Cool and fun Lincoln homage wall art by the bathroom. Hannah is waiting on us today. She seems nice. I don't see an granola or was it an oatmeal pic I saw here. We were ready to order, but Hannah wasn't back to us until after she took another table's drink orders, took CC from another table and brought some items to a 3rd table. She's rather busy in our section. Ordered a green bancha tea and a maple bourbon latte (comes with oat milk) first. Then ordered a brunch wrap and the wild card, but I subbed turkey slices for the homemade sausage and requested the torn biscuit on the side. $52.21. No longer have any salads at the moment and no granola or oatmeal either. The maple bourbon latte is good. The brunch wrap was good with the chicken and garlic aioli. We both liked it this dish best. The wild is different, needed more flavor than just the garlic aioli. Lots of nice veggies. Brussel sprouts, spinach, red peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, leeks maybe, onions, micro greens and red skin potato wedges and the over easy egg. Forgot to ask for the egg to be over hard. The side of sriracha is not the green top, had more of a tart and vinegary flavor to it. It's very filling though. I get why the biscuit is usually torn up into the wild card, it's super dry and tasteless. I wouldn't get that dish again. The brunch wrap was the way to go, lattes here are good as well.

Mudpenny has a new restaurant location and I couldn't be more excited! Their address is 570 Grandville Ave SW which happens to be pretty close to my office. I have no affiliation with the business other than stalking them on social media for months, anticipating their opening. I stopped in for their friends and family soft opening and then today for their grand opening. I am thrilled that they have a delicious breakfast sandwich on their menu because, as I've said a million times, I LOVE BREAKFAST, and breakfast sandwiches are one of my favorite foods. Their O.G. is a fried egg, smoked cheddar, bistro sauce, and your choice of meat (optional) on wheat. It sounds simple, and it is, but it's executed perfectly. I love a runny egg in most cases, but usually not on a sandwich (too messy), so I like that their egg is over-hard. The cheese was completely melted but not super oozing, the bacon was perfectly crisp, and the bread - oh man, the bread. It was toasted to an appropriate level (it's not going to scrape up the entire roof of your mouth and pain you for days) and was soft inside, yet substantial enough to stand up to the savory filling of the sandwich. I finished this sandwich in record time and was already craving another. One of my coworkers ordered the honey oat pancakes, which are dairy free, gluten free, and vegan - and they were super tasty. They were thin and light (you wouldn't believe they were gluten free), almost crepe-like. The oats added a wonderful texture. I don't usually like pancakes but these were delicious. I also tried the turkey harvest. The sandwich comes on pillowy soft, warm naan and has turkey, bacon, provolone, spinach, and fig cranberry aioli. The warm naan was key - normally I'm not a huge fan of sandwiches on naan since it's usually kind of dry and chewy. Not this naan! Pillowy soft, I swear. Word on the street is they're working on a liquor license, but honestly, it'll be tough for me to not grab one of those breakfast sandwiches on a near-daily basis... read more

Went this morning around 9:30 (on a Saturday) with my husband and two daughters (17 and 6). We ALL have a wonderful time. We were seated right away, staff was very friendly, felt clean and safe. Visiting GR again this summer and the word on the street was to try MudPenny. We wanted to go for brunch but that didn't fit into our schedule so we headed for lunch on a Wednesday. Kids French toast was so indulgent and delicious I could have eaten it all as an adult option. I got the rueben and it was pretty good. I can't say it was $15 good but I wouldn't say don't try it. Several dishes sounded great and I wish I could come back and try more! However the latte was worth every penny and I always appreciate when there are non - dairy options. Restaurant was clean, there is some restaurant only parking, and it's honestly not far from the main downtown area. read more

I had a business lunch here last week and was truly impressed with the food and service. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich, which I'm sure was one of he best chicken salad sandwiches I've ever had. It was homemade, with big chunks of white meat chicken, grapes, walnuts, and service in a very fresh naan bread. Truly delicious and great quality. The gentleman I was with also had a sandwich that he said was very good. Service was quick and friendly, and the whole place smelled of fresh roasted coffee which I discovered was coming from the coffee roaster in the front room. Prices were a bit high, but for truly good quality food I don't mind paying a little extra. I'll be back. read more

I wish I remembered our server's name - she was fantastic. She alone gets 5 stars. On to the food - amazing and simple and not overdone. I got the B.Y.O.B, which is three eggs, red potatoes, choice of bacon, sausage or roasted vegetables, toast & jam. I of course went with the bacon. I have no idea how they made scrambled eggs taste so good, but they did. We got a side of Short Stack Protein Pancakes - they were tasty but kinda dry, but I think that's just how protein pancakes are when they are made with quality ingredients. I also got pour-over coffee, which was really good, but I don't know coffee well enough to know the difference between that and regular drip coffee. So, if you want coffee ASAP, like the minute you walk in, get regular drip coffee. What a great little spot for breakfast/brunch/lunch in Grand Rapids. They also have a free parking lot. read more

I don't know why the stars aren't all 5s I'm a foodie and this place is great! It's a little different sure but if you want normal eggs and bacon go to Denny's. Only bad thing I have to say is they aren't open Sundays which is when I have time to go for breakfast but I'm not mad at ya. read more

Love it! Took friends there last weekend and we all had an amazing experience. Great food and wonderful service. MudPenny has a great coffee house vibe. Coffee and service were superb. Dishes were delicious. However, breakfast for four, (with only one coffee beverage at our table), was $84 before tip. Digital menus viewed on customer phones, while more sanitary, were more difficult for my 50-year old eyes to read and reference. Very satisfied, and glad I stopped here on our trip from Chicago, but the bill would prevent us from making this place anything more than a special treat if we were locals. read more

This little coffee shop/cafe is so awesome! I was amazed that we found a plethora of parking and tables at 10 am on a Saturday brunch. My husband and I were in from out of town and wanted a good brunch spot. They had an awesome variety of food and coffee. I got the Bananas in Pajamas. Super simple and also so delicious! My husband got the Philip Picante and loved it. We definitely hope to be back the next time we come to Grand Rapids. read more

It was a cute little coffee/brunch spot. The table had a variety of coffees (in which all were enjoyed), and a variety of food choices. For the most part, the food was solid. Serving sizes aren't huge for the price (only "complaint"). Will definitely go again though! read more

I stopped in and met a friend for lunch last Tuesday. The staff was awesome and gave some great recommendations for coffee and food. The coffee was excellent and was exactly what I was hoping for when I went there. I had a "Happy Burrito" and it was delicious. I will definitely be going there the next time I am in GR. read more

Boom!!! I had no idea what to expect from this place but was so excited by the menu. We came in a group of ladies and everyone was able to find food to fit her diet (keto, gluten free, whole food, vegetarian , etc ). I had the salad with salmon- amazing!!! Came for lunch and had the burger, and the turkey harvest (yeah, I'm a fatty) with a blood orange lemonade. Both sandwiches were excellent. The beef was high quality, cooked to a perfect medium rare and the house sauce was good. The turkey was amazing. I think what really sets both apart is the bread, perfect chew, warm and tasty. I wasn't sure if I was eating an amazing turkey sandwich or incredible bread that happened to have perfectly grilled turkey on it. Now the bad; parking was a struggle, the lot is small and street parking goes quick, but I guess thats Grand Rapids. I was also disappointed in the greens, while fresh, to have a perfectly cooked high end burger and gourmet bread paired with iceberg lettuce felt like a shame, local mixed greens would take it over the top. I'm not a chip fan, but these were fine, nothing to write home about, but good. All that said, I'll be back again and I'll bring my wife for breakfast. And I'm excited about it. It's a VERY clean restaurant in a budding neighborhood with super friendly staff and they actually give back to the community. We need more like MudPenny in the world. read more

This is a little out of the way place that has tremendous service and personality. It's only a stones throw away from the heart of GR but it's worth the travel. The food is tasty. We had the soup of the day, cheesy broccoli. It was creamy and delicious. We split a sandwich and both enjoyed the chicken salad. Hey, it had grapes in it...Bonus!! I did not like the coffee they had (not their fault-I'm just not a fan of some off today's popular coffees) but they were eager to make it right by bringing me something else. The cappacino they brought was strong, creamy and great. As mentioned, the people working there made us feel at home and we're very excited we were there. Service was fast and friendly. We will definitely be back. read more

I'm in love with this little gem. Food was excellent with fresh vegan menu options. I've searched the GR area for a menu where I could have an excellent meal while my Vegan friends had the same. I highly recommend this resturant. It's a quaint little resturant within walking distance to the college. The Staff was warm and welcoming. Prices were right on board with quality of the food. My only complaint was locating the establishment, and that was only due to their minimalistic signage. read more

We stopped here for a quick lunch halfway through a road trip. It is conveniently right off the highway sporting a fresh and clean exterior and interior. The sandwiches are delicious and all have fun spin on there traditional ingredients (think aioli and served on naan!). It's middle range priced and well worth it for the quality of ingredients! The best part for me was that they have delicious gluten free bread they can put all their sandwiches on so I was able to enjoy their menu without much if any limitation. They also have a fun array of beverages to pair with - I ordered a mojito soda. read more

Asorable little spot on the SW side, the coffee is SUPERB one of our favorite spots in town and we've tried them all. Give the Strawberry delight ir the brown sugar shaken espresso a try if you want something cold. The latte is divine if you're a purist. We also ordered the Jim and Pam buttito and they have a Keto friendly plate called the Ron Swanson. Its bacon. Just...bacon. #culture read more

OMG seriously such amazing food!!! Its super hard to find gluten free and organic. I got the Mountie and it was delicious!!! Exactly what I was needing! The horchata was also perfect as I'm prego and cant have caffeine so I'm grateful a place finally has an option for us!!! The pumpkin apple soup is also exquisite! Great find!!! We were traveling and found the Mudpenny on Yelp and liked that they had a dine in option as it is COLD this time of year in Michigan to dine outside! The food was interesting and delicious! Big menu with lots of GF and vegan options. The tables were very far apart, staff were all wearing masks, electronic menus you could pull up on your phone, hand sanitizer was available as you walked in and they asked us to keep masks on until our food arrived. Very sweet waitress too. We would definitely recommend you stop by, we had a fantastic experience. read more

Have been following MudPenny for a long time and have eaten in their cafe on a few occasions, very pleased to witness their success. I was finally able to witness their catering side first hand. We ordered their small platter with a side of Kettle chips, "Chef's choice" for the assortment. Turkey Harvest. The combination of savory meat & cheese was complimented well by the peppered cranberry mayo. Big Bad Wolf. The flavors of sweet ham, thick cut bacon & cheddar chased by the crunch of the cabbage and little bite of sriracha aioli is fairy tale made reality! Who's Reuben. A new take on a classic staple with the brilliant addition of shredded Brussels sprouts. You will not be disappointed, and yes, your kids WILL love this too! Chicken Salad. My grandmother made the best chicken salad, but this one takes her cake too! Innovative spin on the classic potluck dish, your palate will thank you! Quinoa Fiesta. You would not know its meatless! Not spicy but packed with flavor, be transported to New Mexico and back again. Added to my favorites list as of now. They came exactly on time and set up in record speed, kind and professional on the phone and upon delivery. MudPenny continues to impress with the way they redefine EXTRA-ordinary. It is wise to put them in the top of your Preferred Caterers list. read more

Food was carefully prepared, taste wonderful with nutritious ingredients and the presentation was done with care, very appetizing.

The food and atmosphere at MudPenny is absolutely amazing. I went with a few others and got a variety of items and each was superb. I highly recommend the Cristoff. The Honey Oat pancakes are so filling! They also have a great friendly staff. I will be coming back more due to the fact they have so many wonderful options that I plan on trying. It's in a neat little area, it definitely suits them. The prices here are very reasonable. I would highly recommend MudPenny for breakfast and lunch! read more

First time here and we will not be back. The food was just not that great. For the cost, it just was not worth it. I wanted more flavor and it just wasn't there. The French toast didn't have flavor. The pancakes didn't have flavor. Just kind of bland. The eggs, veggies, and potatoes didn't have flavor either. The best thing we had was a chicken salad sandwich. It was so-so. It just didn't rise to the level we were hoping for :( great service though! read more

MudPenny Ada is now opening a new dinner service, offering an elevated take on tapas and family style dining.

History

Established in 2012.

MudPenny began as a small coffee cart in the lobby of the Waters Building in downtown Grand Rapids. Coming from this love for coffee, the name MudPenny derives from "mud," which was a slang for coffee, and "Penny Universities" were the name for coffee houses in 17th century England. Penny Universities were the only place not segregated by class, with people gathering to discuss politics, finance, religion, literature and more. Another reason for the name MudPenny is because a penny is a small sum that over time and when combined with other contributions, will build and grow incrementally. As a result, one of our mottos is "Plant a penny and watch it grow" and we plan to contribute 1% of our sales (a penny per dollar) to neighborhood efforts and organizations. We're excited to further fulfill our business vision by connecting with the Roosevelt neighborhood and with all of Grand Rapids with our upcoming move downtown to 570 Grandville Ave.

Meet the Business Owner: Matthew F.

Matthew Fuller started Grace Coffee in 2012 as a small coffee cart in the lobby of the Waters Building in downtown Grand Rapids. He rebranded the business in August 2016 and changed the name to MudPenny. After many years working in the food industry, Matthew started the business in order to create a dining + service experience that would benefit the growing Grand Rapids community. He treats his staff like family and places a high value on creating a company atmosphere where people feel empowered, challenged + valued. Matthew and his wife, Rachel have three beautiful daughters, Abigail, Macey and Sofia. Rebecca Berends is the General Manager and has worked with MudPenny since 2013.

One portion was noticeably very rare while another was cooked to the well-done level I requested. The steak was also quite tough, which made the dish difficult to enjoy overall. While I truly appreciated the service and drinks, the food quality was inconsistent, and after giving it a sincere second chance, I don't feel inclined to return.

I have used MudPenny multiple times for our catered company lunches and we absolutely love them. The staff is quick to respond and has gone above and beyond to help us out in any situation or deadline. The sandwiches are a big hit in our office, but their cranberry almond salad is right up there at the top too. The honey cinnamon spread they use on the Honey Turkey sandwich is to die for. Since then, I have visited the cafe on E Paris. A little hard to find, but worth the effort. The decor was wonderful and the service great. The friendly staff was helpful with suggestions. Stopped here on my way into town, the reviews seemed mostly great so we figured hey, lets give it a shot. 5 stars doesn't even do it justice. The service and hospitality the staff carries is exceptional to say the least; immediately greeted and staff was very knowledgable about the food AND drink menu.
