Cafe Miel

Went on the day before thanksgiving for breakfast , we loved all the choices from breakfast cocktails to twists on traditional breakfasts and brunch items , their menu states food for the body or food for the soul . We sampled protein pancakes , omelettes and the 3 egg traditionalists choice . All tasted so fresh with all the ingredients , the sausage is amazing . You also have to try the coffee drinks , coffee was their origin and it shows . The cafe miel which is a Spanish take on cappuccino with honey and cinnamon was beautiful and amazingly tasty. We can't wait to come back for dinner

I was excited to check out Mudpenny's new location located right by the new Rose Hotel in downtown Rockford. The restaurant is not connected to the hotel on the inside, but it is in the same building. If you were staying at the Rose hotel, you would have to venture outside and down to the end of the block to enter. I am very curious to see how parking will play out because Mudpenny in the other businesses in this new building, sit on a former parking lot. Time will tell, especially as we get to the busy seasons in downtown Rockford. The space inside was still decorated for Christmas and it definitely added a cozy vibe. I also had noticed that the photos of Abraham Lincoln on the wall are and homage to the penny. VERY CLEVER! The server was very nice as well as knowledgeable about the menu. I also got food pretty quickly, which I was pleasantly surprised because the other locations are typically slower. My latte was extremely tasty, just a little pricey. As for the food, it was excellent! The menu focuses on brunch food, but also offers salads and sandwiches for lunch options. I got the chicken salad wrap on a pita bread and really enjoyed the flavor. The side of fries were a bit extra, but those were cooked to perfection! My friend loved her breakfast bowl and although it looks small, it was definitely very hearty and she took home leftovers. Overall, I give this mud penny a solid four out of five stars! Food was very tasty, just a little bit pricey imo. I would revisit. Thanks Mudpenny.

My friends and I decided to have a girls night here and was pleasantly surprised at the experience!…read moreThey truly do embody the "casual" environment and is very approachable. They have a smaller dining space, so a reservation is recommended (you have to call, no online option) but when we arrived, they were ready and seated us promptly! We each got some sort of steak, potato and veggie combo and it was all VERY delicious! They offer you complementary homemade bread (this did take a bit of time, but they were warm when they came out) and we easily devoured it! I will say that it was a little slower than anticipated, but still very good. I would hope the bread would come out sooner than our appetizers. I ordered the caesar salad (very large) and included bleu cheese which was not listed on the menu. I would definitely list that on the menu unless it was an accident? We got bleu cheese on the bruschetta which listed another cheese, so again, I do think that they need to disclose this. I like it but most do not! I also ordered the $29 steak deal, which for the size and meal, I am very happy with! I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked properly. More rare than medium, which is how I like it! I think I'd like to come back and try it again, but for a good steak meal, it's approachable without feeling like it's TOO casual with peanuts on the ground. Parking is available across the street, but you do have to cross West River Drive, which can be a lot, but cars were patient while we made our way across. I'll definitely be back!

We had a reservation, which is highly recommended as it's not a huge space. You do have to call to make a reservation. The space is cozy and not super fancy, which made it comfortable for a long girls' dinner with lots of catching up. Some of us started with salads and an appetizer. They also gave us some complimentary rolls and butter. My Caesar salad was fresh and tasty, and a large portion for a side, but it had a lot of blue cheese crumbles, which wasn't listed on the menu. I personally love blue cheese, so I didn't mind, but it's a pretty polarizing ingredient so it surprised me a bit. The bruschetta was a really big portion and very delicious. I liked the amount of topping and the bread help up nicely. This dish also had blue cheese crumbles on it when we tried it. The steak menu is interesting and varied, and I like that all the cuts come with a potato and vegetable side, which isn't typical at fancier places. I went with the 10 oz barrel cut filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and I also ordered a side of the mac and cheese. Our main courses took a little bit of time to come out, but I was pleased with the meal. My medium rare filet was definitely more on the rare side, but I didn't mind. The mac and cheese was tasty but the sauce was a bit broken. It also had peas in it... not listed on the menu and also kind of weird. I liked it though! We were interested in the dessert options, but it sounded like they haven't really rounded that out yet as they just had a couple cupcakes. Our server was very kind and helpful and pretty attentive. I think the value is great and it's a less stuffy, more casual option than Chop House (plus more affordable). I will definitely be back!

Lofted above is a great looking outdoors complete with heat lamps and a mini A framed covered area that can be rented for parties. We were greeted warmly by friendly staff and given a kids menu, draft and spirits menu, regular menu and restaurant week menu. Menus galore! We went with the 3 course meal (many items can be ordered on the regular menu) for $25. I ordered the tomato paprika soup and my husband got the split pea soup. Of the two, the split pea soup was the clear winner. Two kinds of pork (cubed and shredded), well balanced seasoning and texture married well to enhance a soup I've loved since childhood. I could've easily eaten a bowl for my meal. The accompanying homemade Dutch Rye Bread, though I'm sure it's authentic, I didn't care for. It was dense, soft and had an off putting flavor. The second course we had was equally delicious. My hubby had the beef and pork sausage overtop a bed of mashed potatoes with kale, onions and bacon. I loved the addition of kale and the sausage was tasty. Everything was well seasoned. My beef slow cooked with apples and beer was delicious. I wish it had been served with more beef. It would have been nice to have some bigger chunks of meat to dive into. The mashed potatoes they came with were good, but the potatoes with kale were the star between the two dishes. The kid's meals were also good. The hamburger had a nice smokey flavor with a tasty side of fries. My daughter didn't care for her Mac 'n cheese, but that's because it was too refined for her palette. The Gouda cheese was complimented by the egg noodles. The third course was dessert. I tried the restaurant Flip custard: Dutch custard, fruit compote, and topped with a dollop of Greek Yogurt. It came with a cute spoon that gave the perfect portions and the flavors all complemented each other well. I would order this again and again. It was a great balance of tangy, fruity and sweet. My husband had the stroopwafle icecream. It was also good, and came with a cute mini stroopwafle. I washed all this down with their Bier Distillery Lager and tried a flavored banket spirit. This restaurant originally was just a beer and specialty liquor spot. I love that they now serve food, because that was the highlight of our evening. I wish this establishment was closer to our home, but perhaps will come back when the weather is nicer to enjoy the outdoor patio. Definitely come and check out this The Bier Distillery for yummy Dutch inspired food and drink! Worth the drive.

He surprised me by bringing me there for my birthday, hoping it would be a great experience. There were definitely some positives to the evening. Our server was genuinely kind and attentive, and the cocktails were enjoyable. The presentation of the food was also nice. To drink, I got the pornstar martini which came with a side car prosecco and he had the espresso martini. My partner had noted in the reservation that it was my birthday and it wasn't acknowledged during our visit which disappointed him but we understand that these things can sometimes be missed. The food, unfortunately, was mixed and didn't quite meet expectations for the price point. We started with the breaded mozzarella, which looked beautiful and had a nice cheese pull, but the flavor was very mild and needed salt which was an easy enough fix but still a bit disappointing. My partner enjoyed his chicken piccata. I ordered the steak frites, and while I don't mind a little pink, the steak was very uneven in thickness, which led to inconsistent cooking. One portion was noticeably very rare while another was cooked to the well-done level I requested. The steak was also quite tough, which made the dish difficult to enjoy overall. While I truly appreciated the service and drinks, the food quality was inconsistent, and after giving it a sincere second chance, I don't feel inclined to return.

I called to discuss with management this morning but feel like our conversation fell short of understanding or resolution. I would like to note that I have never left a bad review and have certainly never reached out to contact owners, managers or staff of any establishment but feel this matter needs attention. Please allow me to explain. Last night 4/9, my sisters, grandmothers & I went to a performance at Devos in GR. After the show we researched and discussed options of where we could eat at that time of night. We had several options but my sister mentioned the great food at the Tavern. Your website advertised family friendly late night dining. We called from the parking garage to confirm Kitchen hours and were told 11:30pm so we headed that way, arriving 10:30-10:40. One of our grandmothers is blind and 89 years old so we helped her up the steps and led her to a low table in the back. Our waitress took our drink orders and when we asked for menus she said that she did not know if we could still order food and checked her watch. We mentioned that we called ahead and they said the kitchen would be open until 11:30. She returned to the table with menus and let us know that we could only order from the appetizer menu of fried food at that time of night (no problem) we are not difficult customers. We ordered 8+ appetizers for our table of 5. Our waitress checked her watch consistently throughout our time there. We appreciated the quality of the food and willingness to accommodate us at a clearly inconvenient time of night for trying to catch a bite. Half way through our meal a song played that would make even the most vulgar squirm if they were at dinner with their grandmothers. It would have been horrible in any situation but we tried to carry on conversation to distract from what was happening. I ended up waiting it out on the bathroom to get away from the entire situation. My sister (27) said that it was the most uncomfortable moment of her life and a night we certainly won't forget. I did not see a jukebox and at the time thought it must have been an employee trying to run us off as there's no possible way it would be on a Playlist. The next day I still felt that the situation was totally unacceptable as we could have visited a number of other restaurants between Grand Rapids and Midland. The majority of us from Montcalm Co. So I called to speak with management. She explained that it must have been a customer playing from the jukebox and that there is no way for staff or management to control what customers can play on the jukebox. She said that she has also been surprised by a few of the selections so I mentioned the specific song, a version of my neck my back (the most sexually explicit song possible). I find it hard to believe that there is no way to override the system or simply change the song. Are you telling me that a smartass 14 year old boy could play this song on a weekday afternoon while he's there with family and there's nothing you can do about it? I find that very hard to believe. She reiterated that there is no way to control it and hoped for a better experience next time. She did say that if I called back with waitress information she could address the service we experienced. Is this possible that there's nothing staff, management or owner can do to prevent or stop such a thing? Would you enjoy a dinner with your family with a slowed down version of this song playing louder than conversation can overpower?
