What ever cake design you e-mail over is not being provided to the person who is making the cake - even after the person receiving the e-mail has confirmed that everything is all set. Mulberries - I want to like you, but you've got to step it up in regards to attention to detail. People are trusting you with very special moments in life - and I certainly don't trust you after what we just picked up today. For years, Mulberries was my go-to bake shop for special cupcakes and birthday cakes. When I came in to pick up my pre-ordered, prepaid raspberry coconut birthday cake at the agreed upon date and time, I was told unapologetically that the cake wasn't ready. I waited for 20 minutes; finally a cake came out that had no special icing decoration other than a few fresh rose heads propped on top. When our family cut into our cake that evening, we were surprised to find that the "buttercream" frosting tasted as though it had come straight from a can of Duncan Hines, that there was but one thin stream of raspberry filling, and absolutely zero coconut flavor in the cake or filling. Something has changed over at Mulberries. A cursory look at the dust in the corners and on top of the chandelier hint at a bakeshop whose heyday has come and gone. read more

After reading such glowing reviews of Mulberries I decided to stop by and try their cupcakes. I am not one to order a cake for any occasion since I can make them myself. I am torn...dissapointed and satisfied. I know that sounds weird. I enjoyed the cupcakes I had and they certainly weren't the worst I have had. I was pretty shocked that first of all, their buttercream is pure white. Dun dun dun, that basically gaurantees a hydrogenated fat delight. I usually don't like buttercream unless it is real Italian buttercream or my moms. I didn't actually mind it, but I wouldn't say it was high quality. The cake was very soft and moist just as I expected. I ordered Strawberry, Yellow, Red Velvet and Lemon. The strawberry cake was quite artificially pink, but I thought that they may use some real strawberries in the mix also. Wrong!! All of the cake was from a mix!! I wanted something sweet and the cupcakes were alright, and I don't feel too cheated considering they were only $1.50 each. But you can get a box of Duncan Hines for the same price. I am just shocked that any "cake shop" can sell cakes made from a mix and charge more than King Soopers. They do a great job decorating. I hate to say this because they were so nice, but they are sort of a poor mans Gateaux ( as far as the decorations go, I wasn't too impressed by Gateaux's cupcakes either). read more

This is one of the most interesting places that serves cupcakes, and regular cakes as well. The location is awesome, conveniently located among great restaurants in the Washington Park area. ATTENTION BRIDES: They only have buttercream frosting for cake decoration. They do NOT do fondant. My only visit to Mulberries was to try them out for a cake tasting for my wedding last summer. Setting the appointment went smoothly, and I brought my parents along to try out some cake; there were 4 of us, total. The cake tasted good, but was JUST the same as if you'd made it at home with a cake mix and buttercream frosting! That's another thing: unless they have changed their cake-making ways, they ONLY DO BUTTERCREAM decoration. For those brides out there that want smooth, intricate designs made of fondant (like I wanted), this will be a waste of time (unless you want free cake...heh heh). The shop is small, but people were in and out like mad grabbing those awesome cupcakes. I would definitely buy some cupcakes if I was in the area. The storefront is ADORABLE, and you'll have fun looking at the colorful creations that they have in the case and coolers. If you want a highly-skilled cake artisan that makes more European style cakes (not as sugary and heavy as Duncan-Hines stylings) go with Janusz with Elegant Bakery in Lakewood. I am so disappointed. While the shop itself is whimsical, visually appealing, awesome customer service and a great place to take your kids, the cupcakes taste completely store-bought. Everything we ordered: vanilla, lemon, strawberry, neopolitan, and chocolate had the same conclusion: something you would buy at safeway or walmart. The cakes were dry and the frosting tasted like granulated sugar. I was with a group of 5 and we all felt like we were biting into cavity-forming nonsense. Now the decor and presentation was outstanding. These cupcakes would suit 3-8 yr olds. The cakes LOOK pretty, but I wouldn't order from here. I feel like a fraud for reviewing cupcake places - I don't think I'm the cupcake connoisseur so many others of you clearly are. My cupcake was all right. I had a chocolate one. It was...cupcakey. To put it simply, I would rate Mulberries as sub-par. As a seasoned cupcake eater, I am always looking for tasty, and pretty cupcakes. However, Mulberries offers nothing better that what I could make myself at home, out of a box. The shop and the cakes on display all looked cutesy and average. The one girl at the counter was trying to be polite but seemed uninterested in her duties and didn't say a word, not even a thank-you when taking my money. I tried four different cupcakes, the flavor was ordinary and tasted like Betty-Crocker does it in the supermarket. The frosting has a gross feeling texture and hardly any flavor. These cupcakes are pretty, lots of fancy-pants topping on the abundant icing - fresh daisy's, candy hearts, sprinkles, and the such. This update has more to do with me learning more about cupcakeries than any changes Mulberries has made. The cupcakes that are available everyday are different from the cupcakes that I special ordered for my wedding (spice, red velvet, and lemon with buttercream, cream cheese frosting and a mix of the two, respectively). They do offer the lemon cupcake in the case, but it comes with buttercream frosting only. The lemon cupcake with the cream cheese frosting is really the best but isn't available every day. The cupcakes are all decorated with many colors and interesting sprinkles different from the norm. The chocolate cupcake with the fudge icing was so good that even before he was done eating it Todd said (with chocolately crumbles falling from his mouth), "Is there any more?" I am still a fan of these cupcakes, but there is some stiff competition in this town. I'm glad I didn't know about all these cupcakeries when I was planning my wedding. The decision would have been much harder. For the price, these are very good cupcakes and if I need to order a bunch, my first pick. read more

I have waited and waited to review Mulberries Cake Shop. Why, you ask? This is the shop that made our wedding cake over 3 years ago. Our wedding cake was absolutely wonderful! Rave reviews for our wedding cake! Lemon with raspberry filling (yummy), butter pecan with apple filling (to die for!), and chocolate with chocolate filling. Yeppers! Absolutely yummy! I still love, no LOVE their butter pecan with apple filling cake and cupcakes! As previously mentioned in other reviews, I LOVE cake! Service - good. They helped guide us through the process of picking out cake flavors, etc. They were so understanding, and just friendly! When I go back in, time to time, the service is still good. Interior - very well decorated, cute! You can arrange birthday parties there, where the kids can decorate their own cupcakes. Who wouldn't like that?! Parking - on the street, so be prepared to walk around the block from your car. But, sad to say, I have found even yummier cupcakes at a few other places. See my list of favorite Cakes/Cupcakes. Extremely disappointed! We ordered a wedding cake from here because they were one of the few places able to make a faux wedding cake and had positive reviews. When we arrived to pick up the cake, it looked nothing like the picture we provided. We only wanted the top three tiers of the picture. The flowers were off and the lattice design was EXTREMELY uneven. The worst part was that the cake was much smaller than expected. The only positive thing about our experience here was that they were able to change the color of the ribbon on the cake. The whole cake just didn't look like an elegant wedding cake. read more

I can't believe there are only two reviews for this 10 year old shop. Well, actually, I'm as guilty as anyone else. I've walked past this shop on a few occasions--usually when the shop is closed and I'm on my way to Sushi Den. I've often lingered, looking in the windows, with my mouth watering and mind wondering what sort of delicious sweets lived inside those doors. Today I met a friend for lunch across the street and was again reminded of the shop as the scent of batter and frosting came wafting through the air as I was sitting on a bench in the sunshine. Before we even ordered our lunch I mentioned the cake shop and we both knew we would be enjoying a cupcake in almost no time at all. We finished our lunch and headed into Mulberries with much anticipation. The store is light and airy with bright colors and sample cakes tempting you from the moment you walk in. We looked at the sample case and admired the cute polka dot cakes and I especially loved the petite cake with the gerbera daisy atop. The decorations were just plain adorable! Knowing I could probably eat an entire cake by myself, I quickly turned around and started looking at something more appropriate for my "diet." The assortment of cupcakes was just as tempting as the cute cakes. I opted for a Red Velvet (smaller sized as opposed to the larger sized) cupcake. It had a quirky little flower made of frosting on top. Almost too cute to eat, but not quite. The girl at the counter was so sweet and helpful. And our two cupcakes only cost $3.24. Pretty good price! We sat outside to enjoy our sweet treats and the girl came out to ask how they were--that was a nice touch just for $3 cupcakes. She even took our trash and chatted with us about the shop and some of the extras available. They have a room attached where they host kid's birthday parties. Each kid gets a cake and gets to decorate it however they choose! How cool is that?! I think I may have a grown-up kid party there for my next birthday. Ugh. SO bummed about my recent experience with Mulberries. I had had their cake at a wedding and LOVED the various flavors. So we decided to stop in for a grab and go cake for my boyfriend on the day of his birthday. The experience was quick and easy, we showed an employee which cake we wanted to order (confetti with Bavarian cream filling) and she grabbed it out and quickly got it iced for us. The price was affordable ($30 for a good sized cake) and the cake was also adorable. After an awesome birthday of golf and an amazing seafood dinner we got home looking forward to a delicious dessert. We lit candles and sang and then cut the cake........it was chocolate with chocolate filling, NOT confetti with Bavarian cream as it was clearly labeled in the store. Worst of all the birthday boy doesn't even eat chocolate cake. Ugh. So that was a pretty big fail and makes me hesitant to return. Edit: called Mulberries this morning thinking it would be no problem to exchange the cake but wanted to call just to be sure. The employee that answered the phone was INCREDIBLY rude and made it sound as though there was nothing they could do to remedy the mix up. Finally, she spoke to a manager and grudgingly told me that if I brought the original cake in that I could exchange it. I came in and was greeted by the same rude employee and got a new cake. She put it in a box and tossed it in my general direction. She then said, "bye" no apology, thanks for coming in, nothing. Never coming back here again. read more

After running some errands I decided to take a walk down Colfax on a Friday afternoon to check out the shops in the area. This little bakery looked cute so I walked in. It has a great atmosphere walking in that is colorful, has little cards and gifts and supplies to purchase as well as books for kids to look at. Also, it smells AMAZING, I knew then and there I'd have to try some cupcakes. The prices seemed pretty good so I ordered 4 cupcakes to go. They also sold cookies, and it was clear they specialized in cakes to order. They had extra rooms for ordering and looking at stuff, so that was cool. The girl at the counter was very sweet and helpful and I got all 4 of my cupcakes for under $4 bucks. (I read on here they are half off after 3pm, which she didn't tell me, but that makes sense price-wise). Over the weekend the bf and I shared them, we got chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon swirl and peanut butter. I thought they were all really good, the only downside was that they had a bit too much frosting stacked on top for me. But they were cute and moist, so I know I'll probably grab some again when I'm nearby. read more

We ordered a cake here for our daughter's fourth birthday and did a two tier with one lemon and one chocolate--the birthday girl's choices, not ours. My customer service was fantastic, the prices were great and the cake was good, but I think it looked better than it tasted. I know some people LOVE this shop and I'm not getting all Debby-downer on it. It is a decent spot and texturally the cakes are nice. I just found the buttercream frosting to be a bit too sweet for my taste. Make no mistake, we ate the entire thing and would order from them again, but we'll be doing some more bakery shopping for next year. Such a tough job :-) read more

It pains me to not give a four or five star review, as the place is adorable, and the staff are great. I'm going to follow up with Ali F's post on 1/3/2015. I stopped in to eat my feelings and grabbed some cupcakes. I ended up throwing half of them away. It was "Happy Hour" and they were half off from 3-5, so I grabbed quite a few. The icing on the cupcakes had that sour/bitter taste that you find from poor dye used at the bakeries in Safeway, King Soopers, etc. I ended up wiping the icing off the cupcakes and just eating the cake itself. The combinations are also pretty poor: a red velvet cupcake should go with nothing BUT quality homemade cream cheese icing, for example. Also, I think the hours and days open could be better. read more

I purchased a wedding cake and 20 cupcakes for a family wedding. The 20 cupcakes were never delivered, so of course there was not enough for the guests. I had complaints that the chocolate tier was dry, and the color on the cake was not the right color. When I rec'd a call back from the gal working she did apologize and she gave me the refund for the cupcakes. She also promised that Kathleen would call me to discuss and apologize, but I never received a call, and I will now go else where from now on. I needed to buy a cake for a friend's birthday and found this place on yelp. I was a bit worried if I could get a cake since it was so last minute but It was awesome that they had premade cakes readily available for walk in customers. There were a lot of different flavors but I decided to get a small chocolate fudge cake. The staff was friendly and helped us write our birthday wishes on the cake. When we finally got to eat the cake later that day, it was surprisingly not too sweet and very moist. Wow. We were blown away with our wedding cake. From the moment we sat down at our tasting the hubby and I knew that this was the bakery to go with. Cost was incredibly low compared to everyone else we'd talked with (under $400 for a 3 layer cake and a full sheet, enough to feed 150) and the cake just spoke loud and clear. Red velvet, carrot, chocolate, lemon and butter pecan...delicious! Thank you SO much for such a beautiful job. All the flavors were delicious and everyone really enjoyed the cake which was so nice. The grooms cake was perfect, my husband was so surprised and I'm so happy it turned out so well. My husband and I used Mulberries to create our cake for our September 27th, 2014 wedding. I had a GREAT experience from step one with Mulberries. My wedding session (to decide which cake, flavors, etc) was fantastic and I got to taste test right on site. Kathleen called about 2 weeks before the wedding and told us when she would be delivering it. It was GORGEOUS and delicious! We got so many compliments at the wedding at how good it was and people went back for more (and we still had some leftover). They deliver to Golden, just FYI. Also my husband and I had a REALLY cute cake topper - they handled it perfectly and stored it for us a few days beforehand, which was really helpful. Also....and I think this is really important. Kathleen told me she would deliver at 4 on Saturday and basically, she showed up on time, delivered perfectly, and set it up without me having ANY clue. This is how good service/business is done, with a delicious result. I had no worries about my cake on my wedding day. Also - you get as many taste tests as you want once you pay and sign your contract with them. Alex and I went for 3. It was AWESOME. We will be using Mulberries for every single baked good/cake/muffin/whatever tasty needs we have from now on. read more

Let's face it, the market is flooded with cupcake purveyors. Short and sweet, like cupcakes themselves, the reason you would choose Mulberries over any other would be for aesthetics. Mulberries' cupcakes are a work of art. They're lovely little confections you'll be proud to present. However, like so many reviewers before me, I have to concede that there's really nothing special about the taste or eating experience. However, I did find everyone in the shop to be friendly, enthusiastic, and fun. Which has not been my experience in every Denver dessert dojo. If you want your cupcake or cake to look special, this is your place. If you want it to taste special, it isn't. If you want both, well, I haven't found that place yet, but I'll keep you posted. read more

I have been to Mulberries twice since my last review. The 1st time was for pink cupcakes for my daughters birthday. I called and placed my order over the phone a week in advance and when I picked them up they were perfect. Absolutely no issues. The 2nd was Saturday and the experience was not the same. I called a week in advance to order 4 doz cupcakes for a party I was having. I requested certain colors for my them and that I would be there at 11. When I arrived at 11 they were not done. My party was starting at 1 so i didn't have much time to inspect since they were running about 20 minutes late. When I got home I realized that none of the colors were correct. I loved the designs they made but they didn't match my theme. At first I was a little upset that they didn't offer me a discount for waiting 20 minutes and now that the colors were wrong I had to call. Of course the nice girl on the phone could only apologize so I asked for the manager. I explained that maybe I wasn't clear but that none of the colors I asked for were done on the cupcakes. I read her back exactly what I asked for and she advised that it was definitely their fault. She was very sorry and would give me a full refund. Yay! I was expecting some sort of credit but not a full refund. Because of that I have to give them 5 stars because there customer service is in the right place. read more

So after researching I decided to order from Mulberries for my sons 18th birthday while celebrating with a friend who resides in Denver! My friend picked up the cake so I do not have a review on the location BUT I can definitely provide a review about the cake and will be happy too! I decided on Mulberries after reading about their background and the cake shop is owned by a local family I liked that! customer service was nice and friendly when I called a left a message they were happy to respond and leave me a message back since im on the phones all day for work. The plan was to have my friend pick up the cake, a ready made cake but all the cake shop had the day before was a 2-layer round chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and I wanted a 2 layer round feeding 6-8 people chocolate cake with white buttercream so I had to order and pre pay by phone $32 and my friend picked the cake up the next morning which was this past Friday Nov 30th Whoop Whoop!! after all this was for my sons 18th bday. I allowed the cake shop to decorate as they pleased!! Real simple decoration blue and green stripes with a happy birthday!! on the cake. Now once I arrived on Friday my friend had the cake in the fridge and took it out about an 1 hr or 2 prior to us singing the birthday song!! Let me tell you I love bakeries and I am no amateur to them. So as soon as I smelled the cake I knew it was going to be good!! The cake smelled fresh, no mold in the facility. I speak on mold because if a facility has mold you can smell it in their food and containers that food is put in!! the frosting smelled fresh, sweet, and clean!! We all ate 2 slices and then some the young children included with a little left over which my friend and husband were glad to keep in their fridge.
