Needed to create a rockscape to cover most of the backyard for a relatively maintenance and bug free backyard. Spoke to a few contractors, eventually picked Axel because of good communication and he came prepared with rock samples. Axel was really nice, even finished the work early. He even came back to fix a bender board that lifted up. There were some minor issues where the rocks didn't fully cover the ground, but the big issue was that a few months after the job was completed...the yard was covered with weeds, weeds, weeds. He made it sound like a few would sprout here and there and can be addressed with weedkiller and I didn't press him on it, but as you can see in the photo below, it is a weed forest. read more

We were extremely pleased with Mulch and Landscaping Design. We used them for our pool area planters. We wanted to have a low maintenance and minimal watering planters, particularly because we wanted to minimize mosquitos. Alex had a lot of options for us to consider. We have clumping bamboo, with minimal ground plants so there is no hiding for critters. Drip irrigation is all we need to keep the bamboo watered, yet no excess water for mosquitos. After reviewing the options for ground cover we decided to use gravel. This will be long lasting and looks great. It is also heavy enough not to blow when we blow leaves. I was hesitant to write this review because Axel is a really nice guy, however, we are a little disappointed with what we got for our money. Pros: Axel was responsive, friendly and did his best to understand what we wanted. We also told him we were on a budget and he worked with us on that. Cons: Shortly after the work was completed, we began seeing lots of weeds in our mulch garden. I was told by several friends, family and other landscapers that if the job were done properly, there should have been tarp under the mulch to prevent weeds from popping up. Another option to prevent weeds would have been to use a drip system. Upon digging up some mulch we discovered that there was no tarp laid out whatsoever. The mulch was placed directly on top of the dirt which is a really great way to grow weeds! The tarp would have prevented weeds from sprouting up and destroying our beautiful new garden. Axel never once mentioned the need for tarp or the option for us to put tarp. Since he is the expert, we took his word for it and only went with whatever he said we needed. Another option to prevent weeds was to use a drip system as opposed to using sprinklers. Axel initially mentioned the possibility of a drip system but after he was done installing everything when I asked him how the drip system worked, he told me we didn't need it and that he just used our existing sprinkler system. I asked him if he was sure that that was going to work and he said that yes, we should be fine with that. Again, we didn't know the difference but come to find out that since sprinklers spread water to all parts of the garden (as opposed to a drip system which only feeds water to the garden plants), weeds will grow out really quickly if the water dispersion is not controlled. So now, after spending several thousand dollars for the new garden, and 3 weeks later, we have a bunch of weeds sprouting up everywhere. These weeds are totally destroying the look and making us feel like we chose the wrong guy for the job. If tarp or a drip system would have been presented to us we would have at least considered them and maybe chosen to include at least one of those options. Even if it cost more, if we knew it would have prevented the weeds, then we could have made an informed decision. The problem was, no one explained any of this to us or mentioned/warned of the possibility of weeds if we didn't use tarp or a drip system. As it stands, we are disappointed because we feel Axel didn't communicate to us our options and now we are left with a lot of weeds in a new, expensive, garden. read more

I asked for general clean-up and mulching for a fairly large residential yard (front and back) and his work transformed our space. Axel and company went above and beyond on this job.
