Upon first entering this meat paradise, you will be smacked in the face...with the most mouth-watering aroma of smokey goodness! Is this what heaven will smell like?!?! Haha Muncan is full of a variety of meats, ranging from bacon, bacon, bacon and sausages, hams, and I don't even know what else. Honestly, it's overwhelming! But we were lucky enough to have one of the staff explain all the different bacon they had, since that was our meat of choice on this visit. On this visit, I got their Tarska bacon, aka "The Emperor's or King's bacon". Come in, with a name like that, how can you pass this up? The other bacon I got, was their spicy bacon. I also got some of their chicharone, made with one of their bacon. All were outstanding! All of this bacon goodness will run about $8-$10 per lb. and it is totally worth it. What a treat! If you're looking for smoked pork, you found it. Muncan is the place where you'll find almost all things homemade. From ribs to pastrami, the friendly and helpful people working behind the counter are fast and attentive. The line to get into this busy shop is sometimes unbearable, but worth the wait. Hence, preparing a list for a large order is generally a good idea to keep from having to visit multiple times. I recommend their king's bacon and double smoked bacon, sliced with the rind removed prior to slicing. Also, their non traditional chicharron is a must try. And, if you're in an experimental mood, try their lamb prosciutto, duck salami or the garlic or paprika pancetta. Just don't forget to leave a tip. read more

Best selection of Eastern European food you can find in the whole city. The service has always been great, I ve been going to this place twice or three times per year for 15 years. After all this time they still manage to keep the prices lower by 20-30 % less then other Italian delis. read more

This place is like a fairytale for me . I wish they have more locations and I wish they were a little closer to me but still I have to go at least twice a month to stock up . Amazing selection of meats .Homemade Prosciutto, domaca and spicy Hungarian sausage , bacon , not like pancake bacon but the real one . The best Chicharon / Pork rinds you can find , juicy , much better than any other place. They have fresh sarma platters / stuffed cabbage ,great pancetta, dried pork neck and pork loin are , great selection of other products like pickels , homemade cheese , roasted paprika , vegetable spreads and cocktails. You can also find things like oil , olives , a really good mustard or get a whole bone in prosciutto huge cut . My dad has been coming here for years and still sends me to get stuff when i visit. I'm actually a vegetarian so i needed a lot of help and asked a lot of questions, and the staff were more than accommodating. I love this place!! There are so many different meats to choose from and the staff is friendly. I always end up with several different things just because I keep spotting things I want. My go to items: -Garlic rolled bacon - I love bacon and garlic. They also have paprika rolled bacon. -Muncan house special salami - their other salamis are good too, but I figure since I am here and I know I like their salami so why not. They have many other options too. -Headcheese - I usually go with the regular, but they also have spicy if you want -Chicharron - I only buy as much as we can eat within an hour or so, since it isn't as good cold or room temperature. So good, but it is so bad for you...worth it though.. haha -Roasted Pork Loin - this is a new item I recently tried and we love it. They have a sample tray and we tried it and it is yum. -Prosciutto - different options to pick from -Bread - they sell big loafs of bread there too. We usually try to go earlier in the day so that there still is one to grab. It is great with the meats, just rip of a chunk of bread and a couple slices of meat... or you can be more civilized and use a knife and slice it I guess... read more

I "discovered" this place a couple of years ago and I absolutely love it. Their products are out of this world, 90% of what they offer in their store is made by them. They also are super patient and willing to educate customers like me that know little about their culture and food, by explaining how to use their produce or by being generous when offering free samples when you are indecisive. If you go there you wont be doing them a favor, you will be doing yourself one! read more

Okay, I know that I shouldn't be hooked on meat products, but I'm a meataholic. Pretty soon I'll be showing up at meeting being held in a basement somewhere stating, "Hi, I'm Shelley and I'm addicted to meat!". Anyway, before that occurs, I will be handling my meat addiction by going to places like Muncan Foods. On a recent trip to New York, my friend and fellow foodie Robert and I went to Muncan Foods. Both of us had seen segments about the place on various food shows and we were both dying to go here. We were not disappointed! We tasted garlic sausage, a hot smoked sausage, kielbasa and various other meats. Yum! Yum! Yum! I purchased those, plus their hot dogs and two types of bacon. Had they cooked the garlic bacon that I purchased there in the shop, I would still be there. Garlicky bacon grease dripping from my mouth with my hands attached to a piece of meat.... At a recent July 4th cookout, I actually "shared" part of my meat haul with my family and friends and they buzzed through that meat like angry saws. I ain't goin to lie, I kept sneaking pieces while I prepared a meat and cheese platter and I had to hold myself back. I'm saying this to say, if you get a chance to go to this place, run like hell and plow people over, if you must, to get to this place. You won't be sorry! read more

When searching for a place to get Canadian bacon, I found this location. It is near the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Fresh Pond Road. The first time we went was near closing time so the man behind the counter was not too friendly. There was a mind-boggling array of smoked meats hanging from above, as well as in the cases. I bought various smoked meats including Polish kielbasa, homemade prosciutto, head cheese, salami, and Canadian bacon (of course). I also grabbed a huge loaf of bread (only $3). The total cost was way below what I was expecting -- not having found the price chart next to the door until I was leaving. On two other occasions, I went back to get other smoked meats included twice smoked bacon which the whole family loved at room temperature as well as fried up. Going in before they're closing also helped us get better service -- chatted with the Hungarian who was born in Romania. He recommended some other smoked sausages for us to try but I forget what they were called. So far, everything there has been delicious and so reasonably priced! It's always pretty cool to walk into a meat store and see the meat dangling in the back. That's one of the experiences all meat stores should give you. I just walked in to see what it had to offer, and wasn't disappointed. The guy running the show seemed straight forward, and very honored Muncan has existed for a long time. It's always good to see employees who honor their workplace. So I only bought a small spicy smoked sausage link but unfortunately I wasn't too impressed with the taste of it, or the spice. One item of the hundreds of items a meat store sells isn't enough to have a full idea on their products, but until the next I visit to try more stuff, which will be very soon... I'll have to give it a 2 for now. Looking forward to update with a better review on my next trip. read more

Finally, a great European deli specializing in dry/cured meats. I can't say enough about this place. They have nice selection of Serbian/Croatian items, from ajvar to Kras cookie items. The staff is mostly the same every time that I came here, but I really like the service that i get from the guy I call "Gazda", which means boss in our language. I go here for the slanina, which is a cured bacon that you can eat just slicing it. The taste brings me back to being a kid back home. But, if you are here try the Parizer, which they make in home. Parizer is our answer to American bologna. But let me tell you, this isn't Oscar Meyer or Boar's Head. This is the real deal, your old Baka's(grandmother) bologna. It is nice and juicy, with great flavor. When you are here, don't forget the freshly baked bread that they have everyday. It will take you back to being a kid, with a grocery list going to the local Kiosk for your parents. Warm, crispy on the outside, while being nice and soft on the inside. Kinda gives you that good fuzzy feeling every time you take a bite They speak multiple languages, as Ridgewood is a very diverse European neighborhood. I have heard them speak Romanian, Slovakian, Polish and of course Serbian and Croatian. This is the place for food that will bring back memories of home. Hvala Gazda. read more

Very friendly and the selection to choose from is huge. They let you taste before you buy. Worth the trip.

Be very careful when ordering roasted meat- they will try to trick you and give you pig's head. They covered it with the meat so that you can t see it until you actually open it at home. Ridiculous unless you re buying entire pig! They are super busy so careless if you re happy or not with the product as they always have new customers they will fool! At first when I walked into this place I thought, "yes! finally a real deli like the old days!" (My family and I would go to lots of different deli's in the past so I was happy to re-visit one of them since a lot of them have closed since I was a kid or have changed so drastically to the modern deli's we see today.) With the new workers in this place though I would stay away. First of all they are all nice to you so that you give them a tip...the ONE time that I fail to give them a tip they are all weird to me. I thought maybe they were having a bad day but then the next time I go in, they act as if they don't know me! I would go to this place since I was a kid and there would always be new workers but these people are scum! I didn't understand it until I talked about this with my grandparents...now they never tip especially since they are retired and are on a limited income. Apparently they told me to stay away because they cheat you out of meat and your money. My grandfather told me that he watched as they weighed the meat for him and then when he got home there was half the amount that he saw them weigh!!! Of course he was charged for 1 pound of meat when he only got half! It's hard to see what they are doing behind the counter until it's too late! My grandmother told me that they charged her 5 dollars more for her purchase...I guess to make up for the tip that they felt they deserved!!!!! What kind of morals do these workers have to steal from the elderly on fixed incomes! These people are scum and I would stay away!!!! I end up driving to the one in Astoria, you would think it's owned by the same guy but it's not. I LOVE Muncan. If I could, I'd walk inside the store everyday just to smell it. Mmmmmmmmm! I like their salamis especially. Sliced thin, plenty of fat throughout, sometimes the outsides covered with crushed peppercorns. Smoky heaven! Try their store-made "bologna." They call it meatloaf. So much deliciousness. So little time. Deep fried pork belly bits are also wonderful but I can only eat one or two at a time these days. I wish they were open past 6PM and I wish they were open on Sundays. read more

Wow! Absolutely amazing variety of middle European meat products. There is a culinary genius behind this. Authentic Rumanian, Serbian, Hungarian preparations. in the old country we could not find better. Everything I ever ordered in the past five years has been perfect and delicious. Went to this place after watching a show on the food network the other night. They talked about this place and showed some incredible looking meats etc. I had to check it out myself. Everything seemed to be very true. The meats were great! I ordered a quarter pound of a few things to try and was not disappointed at all with what I got. I got great help on my order by the butcher who explained what was the best and such. He was a huge help since it was all strange to me since this isn't your ordinary American deli. I was the only person speaking English in the place. I really had no clue how much I was spending. I thought he told me my total was $50 and I was shocked when he told me $15! The prices for all this delicious stuff is so inexpensive in this shop! I'm going back to try some other things probably today. Ohh! they make deep fried pork belly too. These were the greatest Chicharrons I had without a doubt. My cholesterol loves them too!! read more

If you love smoked and cured meats this place is heaven! This is an old-world charcuterie! The smoked pork butt is tender and so flavorful. I can't stop eating this long dried sausage called Carnat, smoky and flavorful with a nice red color (not spicy). Also picked up a lamb salami that's really interesting. Very nice Easter European meat market and good prices. Upon entering, you can smell the aromas of smoked meat. I'm not a big meat eater, but have bought a small amount of good quality bacon for a recipe and some prosciutto. I have always loved this place, i used to go in at least once a week or every other week and "stock up" on things i needed,spent a lot of money,left tips etc...i absolutely love all their foods but unfortunately will not go back. The other day i went in just as usual to buy whatever i needed and i asked if they had the house made fresh sausage i always buy (delicious) and i was told (by marin i believe his name is) that they sold out , he told me this 3 times after which decided that yes he does have some left, i said its not the same one the one i get is thinner and different color etc, but he insisted it was the same showed me 2 saying this is thick ,this is thin, and i was trying to explain to him that the one i get is different but he proceeded to tell me that he makes them he knows better and actually called me CRAZY , my mother was with me and she decided to buy the sausage anyway ( of course we got home i cooked it and she realized it is not in fact the same thing as my husband said as well ) anyway my point is even though i love their food i will never go back there again, even if i was wrong which i was not for that low-life Marin to call me crazy and make other nasty comments?!
