1. Parking - we parked across the street in Avondale Park. Many other vehicles were parked there, too. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the restaurant, it was clear they were not there. Since I didn't see any other open establishments, this is a mystery to me. 2. Service 3/5 - Our purses were checked at the door by a security guard with a very big gun on his side. Our server ignored our table. Another server saw us sitting for about 10 minutes or so and stepped in. She did an excellent job, and we appreciated her service. A 20% gratuity was added to each of our four checks. This was not mentioned in advance, and we did not see it posted. 3. Food 4/5 - The catfish was divine! It was well seasoned and melted in my mouth. The sides offered were limited. I wanted the fried green tomatoes, but they were a premium side with a $4.50 upcharge. I went with the sweet potato fries with powdered sugar and brown sugar (it was supposed to melt on top of the fries, but it did not). They were something to put on my stomach. 4. Environment 2/5 - This is also a Hookah bar. When we arrived, they were smoking outside on the patio, but later someone was smoking inside. I tried the 6-piece party wings with Hot Honey and the Cajun Ranch Okra, both delicious, and the food came out fast. We needed a late-night snack and Munchies hit the spot. I got the 6-piece whole wings with fried okra and everything came out fresh and hot. The wings were cooked just right and the okra was crispy and seasoned so good. It wasn't very busy when we went and the service was quick and super friendly. They've got good drinks for around $10 too, which made it even better. Parking was easy -- they have a small lot in front, but there's plenty of street parking nearby too. Great food and hookah but bad service. The fish and okra slap EVERY time. Blueberry Margarita was just kool-aid. Our waiter pretty much forgot about us after dropping off our drinks and food despite checking on his other tables. We had to get the manager to get him to even give us our checks. So my guy and I stopped by on a Monday afternoon. This was a plus because most small restaurants are closed on Mondays. There were a few customers seated outside with hookahs, so we decided to sit inside. This place had a cool old school type vibe and the 90's R&B music playing reflected this. I ordered the cheeseburger and okra, and he ordered the wings and fries. Our waitress was cool and our food came out fairly quick. My cheeseburger was just what I had been looking for-juicy, flavorful and handmade. The okra was some of the best I've ever tried. My guy said his wings and fries were fresh and made to order. But he wasn't impressed how the waitress wasn't quick to refill our waters after the check was paid. I'm always skeptical of a place that adds gratuity to a check, especially when it's not a large party. I will definitely return to check the vibes on the weekend. I've only been to this place like three times, and each time it was popping!! The vibe is always on point, the music selection is amazing,etc. I ordered the two piece catfish with fried okra and i forget what other side I chose. Let me tell you about this catfish. The fish was juicy, and had the perfect crisp on the outside. The lemon pepper sprinkle does it to me everytime. Everything was fried to a great golden brown and I probably don't remember the other side because I couldn't stop chewing once I started. The sweet red from Oliver Winery was so delicate and cold. I came here on Iron Bowl Saturday. I wasn't expecting to stay long. My plan was to grab a bite and just have a drink . This place is so chill and the perfect environment to watch a game! I ended up staying waaaaay longer than I anticipated bc I enjoyed the vibe and the people here so much. All of the staff was so welcoming and they knew the "regulars" , which was so cool. They took care of them as well as the newbies such as myself! They have a ton of local /craft beers. Mainly in the can but also a few local beers on draft. I was impressed with their beer selection! Don't worry they had a variety of domestic beers as well. Basic brown/ white liquor options available. Food menu is your typical bar food options. I had a whitening sandwich with coleslaw. Fried hard to perfection and the coleslaw was not overly Mayo induced. Perfect pregame snack! A few other things to note: there is an outdoor seating space with a tv and hookah service. Waited over an hour for 2 burgers with a fried side. My burger was so salty I could barely eat it but I was starving by the time I got it. My fried okra, on the other hand, no salt at all. Our waitress was very nice and the food delay wasn't her fault. I felt bad for her because other people were cancelling orders because of the wait. I'm not sure if they were having kitchen troubles or something. There was a guy who was possibly a manager walking around. We have wanted to try this place but after asking for the burgers, wings and even the club sandwich and none were available today. We left to find something more in the line of what we wanted. Customer Service: By far the worst in Avondale. One day, I decided to drop by after work with my gf. As we approached the front door, we saw that there was one waitress outside taking orders, I made eye contact with her. Once inside there was a very polite hostess that asked where we wanted to sit and sat us outside. She was the best part of this experience. For about 10-15 minutes, we watched the waitress wait on tables around us and even sit down beside us while she waited for the other guests to finish eating. There was no acknowledgment on her part. The hostess saw that we hadn't been waited on and sent a bartender out to take our order while the other waitress was busy sitting down. I thought maybe her shift was ending but was confused when a new party showed up besides us and she took there order immediately. When we were ready to leave, I walked inside to pay. The bartender that took my payment was busy on the phone with her boyfriend and had to keep asking me what did I have. The last time I went to Munchies was this past Friday. I walked in and stood by the register for 5 minutes along with a few other customers that were behind me and none of the employees came over or said anything. The waitress that ignored us on the last visit was there sitting by the register doing nothing again. I walked out and went over to Elysian Gardens. 1/10 Location: It's right on the corner across from Avondale Park. There is usually parking near and not a far walk. 10/10 Atmosphere: I like sitting outside more than I like the inside. The inside is small and it can get tight and uncomfortable if more than 12-15 customers are there. Outside is nice and relaxing, sometimes a game might be displayed or good music will be played. 9/10 Price: The food and drinks are reasonably priced nothing special. 8/10 Food: The chicken whole wings and cut wings are probably the best food items on the menu. I don't particularly like anything else on the menu. I had a Philly Chicken Wrap and it was super wet and soggy. The chicken tenders were also soggy and lacked flavor. 4/10 Drinks: Munchies has the best lemonade in Birmingham by far. It's a must have. I've gone plenty of times just to get a to-go lemonade. We get sat and a girl who played basketball at UAB sat down at our table and said "I've never seen any other white people in here!", although the person who sat us at the table was white. She told us two different stories- one that her computer malfunctioned and never sent the ticket and then that the printer was out of paper. We didn't see our server for another hour. This place is hit or miss. Ambiance is there and they do have a great patio which is awesome with the right weather. Food depends on the day. I've had whole wings from here and they were awesome. They seem to have a crazy turnover as there's always new wait staff and they seem to get worse. At opening service here was pretty stellar so I'm not sure what prompted the shift. Tonight we sat on the patio and the waitress sat down after we were seated and never greeted us. The hostess had to go and grab a bartender to serve us. Sat here for about 15 minutes. Kudos to the hostess though. She's friendly, fast, and personable. This would've been a 1 star review if not fit for a couple previous experiences that have been somewhat better. It does seem when the owner is in house service is better but when he's out of sight it's pretty bad. I'm still rooting for this business because it has the potential to be great and was at one point. Hopefully they find the help they need to get this place back on track.
