I am old enough to recall the old commercials of Michael Vale, the sleepy-eyed face of Dunkin' Donuts playing Fred the Baker with the iconic,"Time to make the donuts." That being said Times change and things evolve in pursuit of that next big thing that will generate revenue. Unfortunately in some cases the big companies forget about the things that matter and that relationship is lost with the consumers. I participated in an event called the Baker County Donut Trail in Ohio. The goal was the visit every mom and pop donut shop (44) in the estimated 150 miles radius. The county gave out T-Shirts and coins upon completing the tour. It was great to interact with each of those store owners who do the things that the actor Michael Vale portrayed. Now about this place, It was brought to my attention by a suggestion here on yelp, so on my way home from work I stopped here in search of the Maple Bacon donut. As I pull up the store clearly resembles a former Dunkin Donut shop. I took note of the sign in the front window which was a clear dig to the corporately run competition that no longer makes their donuts on site. The store obviously showed some age and screamed for some freshening up. It appears to be run by older teenagers. Taking in all of their offerings, I didn't see the elusive Maple Bacon I was told that there is a special license that was required for meat products to be present in this setting. Good to know. Well I pondered my selections as they all looked so good along with the specialty items and departed. I was a little disappointed with the donut holes as they didn't taste as fresh as the accompanying donuts. My search for the Maple Bacon continues. read more

If you do not want your customers in your restaurant then please hire adequately trained people to help you carry out those orders for curbside pick up! Honestly, some of the BEST donuts I have ever had! I got there at 4 in the evening, and they were still so fresh and moist and just overall delicious! I will DEFINITELY be returning, and very soon! First time to Munster donuts, it was a recommendation and not a bad one. They have a lot of donut options. The server that we had was fairly rude which made our experience not the greatest. The price for the donuts are okay. For 3 of them we paid $3.30. They charge an additional $0.25 if you use your card and are under a certain amount of money. I have been here several times and each time have had great service and wonderful donuts. I like that they switch up their flavors but keep their signature donuts. Hell yes, support your local old-fashioned independent doughnut shop. Both the cake doughnuts and the yeast-raised are very good. They carry a lemon filled, which is rare (I always look for these because they are my mother's favorite). The apple fritter is odd though: they have taken the unusual approach of crafting a fritter with a pocket of gelatinous apple filling, rather than the standard style of fritter with apple pieces throughout the dough. Sadly, it sabotages what could have been a damn good fritter. They nail all of the taste and texture elements, but that goopy, artificial-tasting filling is disappointing. read more

When we arrived, we were told the long johns were not available, would we like something else? Oh how I love Munster Donuts. It's been five years since I put any type of donut in my mouth. Let's just say today I caved in. It was B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L like a Christmas Miracle! There's 2 main things that I can't find anywhere else that I've lived. 1. Munster Donuts. And 2. Lemon rice soup at Commander. Not the prettiest place, not the friendliest place, and not the most organized place. But their donuts are out of this world. Only 8/10th of a mile south off 80/94 on Calumet ave makes it very easy to get to from most anywhere. If you happen to be sitting in wretched traffic it's a great excuse to get off the expressway for a quick donut stop. I've timed it and can get off the expressway, hit Munster Donuts, and back to the expressway in under five minutes. I've occasionally been here when there isn't a single donut for sale or another time just two varieties. More often there is a choice of at least 25 to 30 different donut choices and they're always fresh and great tasting. While I've found the jelly filled and the chocolate topped Bismarcks to be the best, I can honestly say I've not had a bad donut. Great flavors and even a nice rotation of special flavors like the current Apple Spice filled donut that wasn't too sweet and had real apples inside, not just a flavored goo. The staff don't excel at providing warm and fuzzy service but they get the job done quickly. read more

The inside is simple, there are some stools and a bar area to sit at, a newspaper and periodical stand by the door, and if you look to the left and there's a good sized window into the production area. This isn't a fancy little place, it's a Form follows Function place. And the function is AMAZAZING! I bought 6 donuts, 30 donut holes, a small coffee and a Vanilla Icing donut for (this isn't a typo) just a bit over $8.00! Bow Ties, (Vanilla) Long John, Apple Fritters, Maple Pecan, Cake Donut with Vanilla Icing, Plain and Powdered Donut Holes and of course their Coffee. I tried at least a bit of each, after which I was one milligram of glucose away from having a sugar induced Rager. 3-1/2 stars, really, but yelp made me choose whole numbers only and I honestly can't give MD 4 stars. I realize that there are many fans of MD here. I don't blame them. MD has some very good donuts; so why only 3(1/2) stars? Munster Donut is like Dunkin' x2. I say that b/c from my experience with the growing list of donut shop/bakeries I'm trying, the crust just doesn't measure up to what a hand-made, hand-fried donut has (think of the crust of the sour creme, but a wee bit less as crusty, and you'll get an idea of what I mean.) I don't mean to sour a parade, but the really good old fashions I've had have had a crunchier/crispier crust. All that being said, the inner cake portion of the cake donuts is delicious. The maple frosting is DELICIOUS. The blueberry jelly, luscious. The yeast donuts are good as well. Frosting is a bit on the sweeter side. The crown jewel goes to the apple fritters. They are as large and as round as a grape fruit and they also are filled with the small-chunk filling. On top of all of this, the atmosphere and considerateness I experienced are what I think make the donuts so extraordinary. (Case in point - I order my dozen samplers and one apple fritter. I then order a coffee. I pay. Then I realize I need to get another fritter. I ask if they have any more. None in the case, so the gentleman checks in back. They just made some and the woman, without me even asking, takes the "older" one I had just bought,) and says she's going to replace that so that I have two fresh ones. I've never, EVER experienced that at a Dunkin'. (Doubt if I ever would.) And I don't usually get that at other privately owned places. I'm convinced that the good vibes of the place is tasted in the donuts. Though when all is said and done, for all the places around Chicago, Munster Donut only pulls a 3(1/2) stars with me. So I guess I'm old enough to remember when this place was still a Mister Donut before they all got bought out and converted to DDs in the 90s. Whoever had the foresight to switch a few letters around and convert it to a neighborhood hangout joint deserves my respect. They really do make a great selection of donuts, cookies, brownies, and more, at any time of the day. We found this tiny spot just driving around looking for a bakery. Yelp said "GO HERE!" so my wife said "LET's GO THERE!" The assortment of donuts are great. Lots too choose from. We selected a dozen and went RANDOM RAMBO!! "Gimme the strawberry filled jelly. Two regular coconuts, etc etc". Once we got home we took a bite of our soft oh so sweet donuts and boom!! SOFTNESS! I love Muster Donuts so much I would travel miles just for six. That's just how good they are. My favorite is the strawberry icing soft donut. I'm not a big fan of the cake donuts, but they're really good as well. The price is average, $5 for a dozen depending on the kind of donuts that you pick out. As soon as you walk up to the front door you will immediately smell the the delicious donuts. That's the beauty of it, because you may not even have an appetite for a donut but the smell will draw you in. Hands down they are GREAT!!!
