Murphy Electric's electrician Rene is fantastic! He was able to identify and fix not just the issue I was having but identified some concerns I wasn't aware of and resolved them as well. I like that the company offers half day and full day deals as they are much better values for money if you have several issues or tasks to accomplish. Highly reccomend asking for Rene and he is 5 electric stars! One star off as trying to get ahold of someone at the company to ask a question was difficult as their listed email returns an error and the phone was not answered, but scheduling through their website was easy and convenient. read more

I've hired these guys a few times and always had excellent service. This time, after rescheduling due to snow, there was a miscommunication about time and cost of my project. The electrician came for a 30 minute service call, then very patiently waited for me to decide whether I wanted to proceed with a half-day. He was very knowledgable, did work he was unprepared to do -- a wiring issue in an old house -- and charged me a very fair price. When I need electrical work done I will always call them. read more

I hired Murphy Family Electric to reconfigure two light switches to control ceiling fans in our bedrooms instead of wall outlets - what I thought would be a pretty easy job. The first appointment, the electrician called a couple times to complain about another job taking awhile and also traffic, and ended up having to cancel on me. I didn't think much of it. The second/make-up appointment, the electrician spent about five hours at the house, and finally finished the job (or so we thought). Within a couple weeks we began to notice something weird was going on with our wiring. Our ceiling fan wouldn't turn on for hours at a time, and our closet light switch wasn't working. We finally realize that the electrician re-wired our bedrooms so that you couldn't turn on the fan or the closet lights unless the ceiling fan in the other room was turned on. We contacted MFE to return and fix the issue. The same technician came out and attempted to fix the issue. After about 1-2 hours, he said that he made progress but would have to return to the house another time to finish the job. He appeared to make progress in fixing the issue, but we realized within a few days that the "fix" ended up cut-off power to the garage outlets located directly beneath the bedrooms. On our fourth appointment time, where we thought we would finally get everything solved, the electrician didn't show up. They still haven't called, texted, or responded to my outreach. We just moved into our house and hired an electrician to install lights and fix some of our outlets. He came two hours late (he even called when he was 30 minutes late to say that he was 15 minutes away, which was clearly a lie and I don't know why he bother calling at all) and took a smoke break in between each installation. He said that he fixed all of the outlets and replace them, but we found out after he left that he only fixed one of the four. We have three extra holes in our ceiling from a light that he put in wrong. Another chandelier was put in crooked and was hanging lopsided. He also broke two of the specialty lightbulbs and just said "whoops!" We have to hire another electrician to fix his mistakes. We use the Yelp quote service to hire this company. They were the least expensive, but I should've paid a little more to get it right the first time. Learn from my mistakes! read more

Bad experience with this company. Asked for quotes from 5 companies. Murphy's provided an reasonable estimate and directed me to book an appointment at their website. Their website wouldn't allow me to book the services I needed. Ended up texting back and forth for a while with the company before being instructed to add the tall ladder service without adding the service call. This worked. 3am on the day of my appointment, I get a text telling me they don't accept discounts on the service I am getting and they are having trouble coordinating the service. They reschedule for 4 days later. It's now service day. We have a 4-5 pm window. The window comes and goes, no word from Murphys. I text them and ask where the electrician is. They say he will be there at 7:30 pm. We waited around and the guy never showed. No message, no call. The next day I let them know their guy didn't show. No apology, no attempt to make it right. Just a text message reading "please reschedule". Real excited to see how they respond to this one. read more

It would've been okay if the company or the electrician communicated it with us but there was nothing; I had to call the business number and email to get an update on the appointment. There is also an option on the booking website where you can choose an electrician but it is not honored. Great service for repairing my main circuit breaker in the electrical panel. They sent someone to do an inspection and provide an estimate immediately after I contacted them and even arrived early. After the inspection, they were able to secure the part (a main circuit breaker) and schedule someone to fix it later that same evening. The electrician that did the fix, Markii, was professional, knew his stuff, took appropriate precautions in terms of wearing a face mask, etc. and after fixing the circuit breaker, inspected my fuse box in the house and walked me through how the system works and how the electrical load is distributed in my house and gave me some great tips. I would definitely use them again and would highly recommend Markii. The only room for improvement I would bring up is the cost. Although they are similar in price to other companies or service providers, you can find more affordable options with individual electricians, but obviously I can't speak to what kind of service you would receive from individual providers. read more

I had a positive experience (overall) with this company and the tech, Mike, who came to my home for a 'half day' package ($395 + Service Fee $69.50). Mike showed up when he said he would and quickly knocked out the 3 tasks I had in mind. I have no issues with the workmanship though the final bill was a bit higher than anticipated (~$625). I was pretty surprised a Home Depot run was required and the seemingly common materials weren't in his company branded vehicle, so I ended up paying for both the trip time and up-charged materials there (feels like double billing to me). While billing feels questionable to me the final bill wasn't way over the top. In the end I'd call them back, but I'd be better prepared to avoid being charged ~35% more than expected. read more

Worst company I've ever dealt with. They don't take phone calls and only want you to text. I asked what parts I needed to have and an estime of how long things would take and was told to book a service call. I should have run then but stupidly I didn't. 8AM appointment and the tech calls me at 8:46 and says he's on his way and will be there in 20 minutes. At 10:48 he says he's otw and had to stop at Home Depot to pick up stuff. At 11:14 he pulls up and sits in his van for 15 minutes smoking a black and mild. Takes him another 15 minutes to get his tools to the front door. He comes in doesn't take his shoes off or put any booties on and tracks mud on my carpet all the way upstairs to my kids bedroom, then has the nerve when I ask him to take his shoes off showing him his muddy tracks to say "thats me?" He took his first smoke break before 12:30 setting the tone for how bad my day would get. He made multiple cuts in the walls and ceilings, even sratching the walls when any DYIer could have ran the wire considering the massive attic to work in and there already being a wall switch in place. He even damaged the ceiling I'm assuming by putting his knee through it and had the nerve to call it "part of the installation." Took him 8 hours to poorly install 2 ceiling fans and was too lazy to even mount the remotes and "lost" the batteries for one. He took probably a dozen personal calls on speaker no less while "working" enlightening me to his preferences in women and sports. After 7:30PM and $1,000 later, I wanted him to GTFO of my home so we could be done with the nightmare even though we had to vacuum his work area because his version of clean left insulation and debris all over our carpets even in the hallways. I should have known those parts I asked about and could have had for him were now 2-5x the cost of what Lowe's sells them for. The part that really pisses me off is he moved my childs custom crib and damaged the corner and the wall without admitting or apologizing for it. I contacted the sorry excuse that only responds by text at 703-309-6125 and they immediately responded did you read our terms of service and then didn't respond. I must have missed the negligence term because that's what this was! I had a different electrician come in the following day to install the last ceiling fan. Only $300, installed the fan in under 2 hours, wore booties inside, actually put plastic down so the area wasn't a disaster, cleaned up when finished, didn't put holes in the walls or damage our home! Clear info given about cost up front, which was much appreciated. Electrician was a super nice guy who I really enjoyed chatting with and I think he was doing the best he could considering how over-scheduled he seemed to be. One big "but" - after the electrician completed the work and left, I realized one of the switches attached to the box that was worked on stopped working. I called to have someone come out and fix the switch, explaining that I did not expect to be charged for this since it was clearly a result of something done in the box while the electrician was completing the job. I was told I was wrong and that the switch must have "gone bad" and it couldn't have been anything the electrician did. Then the responsibility of scheduling directly with the electrician was put onto me by the company, which just resulted in a back and forth and eventually no follow up from the electrician. A few weeks later my dad was in town, and he is very handy, so I had him take a look at the box and the switch. Ends up that a wire was not cut short enough when the electrician did work in the box and it was causing the switch to ground out. The switch had not gone bad, and this was a result of the electrician failing to cut the wire short enough to not ground out inside the box. All in all in turned out fine, but for the money I paid I expected to be treated better by the company when an issue arose. read more

I booked an "electrician for a day" deal. I bought all of the material myself beforehand. Sammy showed up promptly on the day of the appointment. I had a list of electrical items I needed completed and Sammy knocked them all out. He even stayed a few hours longer than the original appointment to finish up. I paid an extra charge for the extra hours, which was worth it. I don't think Sammy took one break during the entire day. There ended up being a small problem with the work. There was a communication hiccup in scheduling a follow up visit but all was resolved quickly. Danny was sent out in a few days. He was thorough and double checked all of the work. He fixed the problem quickly. Sammy and Danny were a pleasure to work with. The price was reasonable. I will definitely use these guys again. read more

Do not select this vendor. They do not do consults nor provide a close to accurate quote of total possible cost for a job. They are shady, condescending to women, and intentionally vague. At first, the quote of $168 that was given to me did not include the total number of hours nor materials needed to do the job. Only by chance I read on their site that they charge $40 or so for every 15 minutes after the first 30 minutes. Because of the vagueness in the quote, I cancelled my appointment. The quote of $168 was only for the first 30 mins and gas fees, but I wouldn't have known that if I had not happened to read this on their website. My total bill could have been $168 or $300 or something more and I wouldn't know that until the service electrician showed up to take a look. Also I didn't want to be put in a situation where they would bill me for the trip, if I turned them down after they provide only a consult and after learning that the possible total cost would be out of my budget. This is classic bait and switch tactic. On their site it said that if they don't have materials on the truck, the customer would pay for the time it would take for service electrician to travel to obtain materials. When I asked for them to specify what materials were required, I was told "you are asking too many questions". My intent was to obtain a comprehensive list so that I could make a run to the store and purchase all the necessary materials in advance of the service electrician visit. And that too for the purpose to make electrician time spent as efficient and short as possible. The jerk probably assumed I was going to collect the knowledge then move on to another vendor. Well, I definitely didn't do that, but instead moved forward with another vendor. Anyway, I have more negative points about this company, their approach, and business tactics, but there is not enough space to do so. Bottom line, don't use their services. read more

Tech was late by almost an hour and they offered no helpful solution. I asked them to credit me back for an hour and they refused. If you're also going to charge customers separately for cost of "expensive tools", put it in the price of your services. Seeing it makes me upset as I don't care about the cost of your tools. Everything I was looking for. We wanted to install recessed lighting (into a plaster ceiling--more o this later). Sean was really helpful over text, gave us an accurate quote, and let us know what materials we needed to buy to keep cost down. We settled on two whole day packages as we added in a few more projects. Day one got off a little rocky. The electrician assigned the job apparently decided this was the day he wanted to become a problem employee, and basically no-showed for the job. Very frustrating when you wait 5 hours past your planned start time. But Sean rallied, and called in two electricians to work half days to make up the lost time. Sammy and Jake worked as a great team and did a good job. Very knowledgeable. Plaster is pretty messy to cut into, and because there was no existing wiring they needed to cut access holes to wire everything together. They took extra care to make sure everything was laid out properly, and to minimize the patch work we would need to do. And the lights look great. They'll finish up tomorrow, so I'll update then. Also, do yourself a favor: get Commercial Electric LED slim color changing recessed kits. read more

Very professional, meticulous, neat, great customer service, and I like the fact that they use technology to make it easy to communicate when scheduling, etc. I highly recommend them. I purchased the voucher from Yelp, and was aware of the company's rates. What they don't make clear, until you book an appointment, is the additional $100 dollars in fees that they charge. I am pasting in what they sent me after buying a voucher and scheduling an appointment. Essentially, rates are $200 for the first 30 minutes when you factor in their inventory and gas fees. Never heard of anything like this before, but they need to make this more clear. Working to get a refund from Yelp. Be aware of our rates, deals and terms before we come out and perform any service. Updating my original review since Sean and Murphy's Family Electric ended up pulling through and installed a new upgraded panel a couple days later. The Electrician seemed very knowledgeable and thorough and Sean was easy doing business with through completion of the entire project, even through the city permit inspection and Dominion's connection steps that follow. The only critique I have is the whole panel upgrade process from start to finish took longer than I expected (about a month) but some of that falls on Dominion for taking so long to finish their part. We had a series of mishaps with our garbage disposal, the story is way too long to go into. But the upshot is that the problem turned out to be electrical. The first place I called said they couldn't come until a full week from then. I called Murphy's hoping for the best, and Danny showed up a few hours later despite it being late on a Friday afternoon and him being way the heck up in Maryland, and even then he called to let me know he was running a few minutes late (I was glad someone was coming at all on such short notice!) When he arrived he was polite and friendly, took the time to give us some clear advice about the problem. He then took care of it quickly and thoroughly. Great work correcting a problem created by another contractor. The Hot Tub service person came over and took everything apart to fix the hot tub and then reconnected everything wrong (very dangerous for electricity!). But 30 minutes after they arrived everything was working again! Will use them FIRST for anything related to electricity! read more

I read through some reviews and see that the LivingSocial crowd wasn't pleased but also there are some high reviews. My experience with electricians is past fundamental. I love remodeling homes and tinker with electricity but I got a 30 amp GFI breaker that needs to be installed and I found out that having a professional install this is a win-win. They can get the lines cheaper than consumers can at home depot (the breakers we all kind of break even on). First line of business: Customer Service - booking of the appointment (4.5 Stars) The person who answered the phone was pleasant/cheerful. Answered all my questions and when she did not know the answer she asked someone and then answered my question rather than took a guess. I like that! I asked about availability and she targeted the closest time which wasn't convenient for me so I asked for a Friday time and got booked early morning. I dinged 1/2 a star for introduction. I have no idea whom I spoke with but she was very pleasant and I will get her name next round ;) Day of appointment I did not receive a phone call stating the electrician was behind schedule but I was given a 30 minute heads up window so I wasn't trapped at home for 3 hours (10am turned to 1pm). I was informed that the techs had all the supplies needed to complete their job. I gave them a heads up of what was needed but clearly no note were taken as the electrician showed up unprepared. Lateness and unprepared deducts 1.5 stars -- 3 stars Duration: I've had this job completed in 60mins before Murphy Family Electric. I paid the electrician for the job NOT hourly. I had 4 things for Murphy to do but the electrician spent a good 1/2 hr explaining the difficulties giving you the opportunity to walk out and just lose $100 from Yelp. So the job took 2 1/2 hours for ONE item. When you see the photos you will see why MFE only did one item but I'm reserving those comments for the quality/craftsmanship. In accordance with Yelp I am giving two stars the "Meh. I've experienced better." Quality: I encourage readers to add a star(s) if they feel my rating is not appropriate. My photos are attached. I've done better work with my friends. Luckily I can plaster this project up. The holes were sloppy and the electrician insisted on drilling into a stud causing a large spark which cut power off to the room. Amazingly this was fixed in 13 mins...the time I wasn't billed for! I have no problems paying $120 p/hr but that money comes with a level of expectations. View the photos and ask yourself if I overpaid. 1.5 stars-- Meh & Eek. Value: The electrician didn't wear boot covers, spent a good 1/2 hr warning me before billing me if I should do the project. I could've let the $100 go but this is done now. I just need to buy the parts from dominion because the electrician warned me that MFE would mark it up! I told him I would ask for a receipt from MFE but he said they wouldn't have to give it to me. The value and "values" are not something I would expect to build a relationship with...This will be my last project with MFE. Also you have a form that you sign prior to work. I did not sign this form as I did not agree to the terms. 1 star. Overall: 7.5/20 = 1.75 stars. I typically NEVER round up but the guy did show up and after the warning of doing the job got down to business. Out of 4 jobs none were complete and damage occurred. First we accumulated several tasks like hanging two ceiling fans, creating a new bathroom outlet for a bidet, switching closet lights, and installing a new bathroom vanity set of 5 lights. then when the electrician from Murphy Family electric arrived, we told him the order of preference and turned him loose, thinking he couldn't possibly do it all in half a day but we would see how far he got. We were wrong. working consistently and with focus, he completed all of the tasks in the half day timeframe, working down to the very last minute. we will use them again whenever we accumulate more tasks in the near future. BLUF: I did not have a good experience with Murphy Family Electric. I had a electrical short in the basement that happened when I was attempting to simply remove the outlet cover plate so my wife could paint the walls. When the plug receptacle broke in half removing the cover plate, I decided it was best to replace all the old plug receptacles (about 55 yrs old). They still did not work upon replacing, as well as other outlets in the series. .I sent a request for Murphy to come out and access the situation and fix the short. I paid over $400 for 3.5 hrs to ensure there would be adequate time to trouble shoot and fix, as well as give an estimate to replace the main distribution panel. The tech came out and was unable in 3.5 hrs to determine the source of the problem and fix the short. At the end of the time he was in a hurry to leave and said there was nothing he could do unless I was willing to be charged for further service. I was not impressed with his ability to isolate the short and fix what I believe is a fairly common issue, so I opted out. I was able to schedule another company to come and look at the problem. In less that one hour they determined I had a bad breaker and located and repaired the short. When I contacted Murphy about my dissatisfaction with their service they assured me they would talk with the tech and call me back. Needless to say I never received a return call and all I received was an e-mail with a discount code for future service. Sadly I am still out the $464. As a result I will sadly not be recommending Murphy Family Electric to anyone. I just left another voicemail and am waiting for a return call. I received a text message from the company stating the technician changed the problem break out. I know he did not as I was with him the entire time. No resolution with Murphy Family Electric. I am just glad that Dane Electric was able to isolate the problem and replace the problem 15 amp breaker. read more

They sent Danny out and he was able to get our problem completely fixed and for under the quoted price (we didn't need the deal I initially requested - - it wound up being a simpler fix).
