I stumbled on this place over the weekend. After looking up online I decided I needed to give it a whirl. Glad I did. My first trip...hot dogs. All beef. All good. Great chili. Warm bun. Great fries Next trip "Philly dog". Part dog/part cheesesteak. It was probably too heavy for lunch for me. But it was incredible. Next trip. Burger. Better than any fast food burger and a good number of restaurant burgers. Next trip- more dogs. Incredible. The food is always fresh and delicious. And there are countless options. The last time I came here was years ago for breakfast. I don't know why this longstanding diner is never on my radar. As Yelp elite, I'm always looking for the next new thing I guess. My husband was browsing Yelp looking for a great burger and the recent reviews were enough to get our attention to stop in for a late lunch. It was 2:30pm on a Thursday and the hours posted online say they are open until 5:00pm but the hours posted on the door say until 3:00 so we just made it under the wire. They kind owners also let more people come in after 3:00 and didn't seem to mind. Both our burgers were made to order and super hot and fresh. They had shredded lettuce, mayo, and tomato. They have ketchup bottles on the tables so it's easy to add to your burger if desired. The shredded lettuce and tomato were ice cold which is the best! My bacon cheddar burger came with a super generous 3 slices of perfectly crispy bacon. My husband got a side of Mac and cheese while I got a side of fries. The Mac was good and after a sprinkle of pepper was just tasty. The fries were hot from the fryer and piping hot. I loved everything about my lunch here today. Super casual but really friendly and just genuinely great food made with care and quality that seems more and more rare these days. On top of all that the price can't be beat. I think one of the only drawbacks from Murphys lunch is parking. There are a few curbside spots right in front of but if those are taken there is a public parking garage 1/2 block away. We came here a little before noon on a Tuesday. Since we normally are at work during the week we took the opportunity to visit Murphy's since they are open only Monday through Friday. Located just across the street from the Hilton it is easy to miss. The small building holds 8 or 9 tables just inside the entrance. It looks like they could have additional tables further back but we didn't inspect. There are menu boards immediately upon walking in and also daily specials. It was apparent this is a hot spot for people who work in the area to enjoy a quick lunch or take back to their office. They have a hot bar under the menu board with their daily specials already prepared and they also do entrees, burgers, dogs and sandwiches made to order. We noted they offer 10% off for people who order grill items online. They also offer Ashby's Sterling ice cream. When it was our turn to order we each ordered burgers and fries. My wife chose the mushroom gouda burger and I chose the bacon cheddar burger. The prices are incredibly reasonable as well. The man behind the counter takes the orders, serves them up, cooks, and is the cashier. A true one man show. Wow, we can only imagine the amount of work that comes with prepping, preparing and cleaning up on a daily basis. We took a seat by the window and our order number was called within 10 minutes. Our food looked delicious and we immediately dug in. We both thought the burgers were very tasty and the fries were crisp and seasoned well. Delicious hidden gem! Nothing fancy here but this 1 man diner is pretty fast service. They call your number and you pick up your food. There is plenty of table seating and more at the back room as well. The ladies room looks as if it used to be a closet. The toilet is behind a door and the wash basin is in the hallway outside that area. You get polite service from the man behind the counter as he works quickly to get your made to order food for you. If you like old time diner style restaurants and don't mind photos of Art Garfunkel on the walls, this just might be your kinda place. read more

Murphy's is in many respects a hidden gem, tucked away in a relatively quiet area of downtown. It's not a big place either, as there are probably not more than ten dining tables in the primary dining area, though there are a few additional tables in an adjoining room. Nothing fancy here, just as a lunch counter should be. I went the way of a daily special, selecting the meatloaf. While what I received had gone a bit cold, it was still delicious. I imagine it'd be even better if it were warm. The mac and cheese I ordered to accompany my entree was the best I've found in this region, with a rich, cheesy flavor. The green beans and roll that also came along with the meal were simple and suitable. If you're in search of a quick meal while in the mid-city, Murphy's is deserving of your attention. read more

Loved the concept of this place. You have the option to order from their menu. Everything is made fresh with real ingredients, or from their hot bar. This gives you the option to dine quickly if you're in a rush. The location downtown is great but unfortunately the road in front of Murphys is closed due to the construction or the new Kaleidum. (Fortunately the construction should be complete in the next few weeks). Because of this, I had a hard time finding parking. Rosemary chicken from the hot bar; I was genuinely surprised at how much flavor everything on the plate had! And I do mean everything. The rice, the chicken, the vegetables, and the greens. I had never heard of this place until a friend told me about it. We got there about 1:30 p.m. and they have a cafeteria style service but since it was so late they were almost out of some of the food. Luckily they had a large selection of burgers and sandwiches and being somebody who loves a good cheeseburger I went with a cheeseburger and fries. The burger was a hand patty burger and amazingly delicious. I was most impressed by the fact that this whole operation seemed to be run by one guy named John who was doing a stellar job. Parking is not the greatest downtown but there was a parking deck nearby and only cost $1.25 to park there so that's not too bad. Went for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. It's a small storefront with metered parking on the street. This is literally a one man show. Owner cooks, takes orders/payments, buses tables etc. Even with him juggling all this service was quick and food ready in a reasonable amount of time. This is an old school lunch place,nothing fancy. The food was all good quality and delicious. The French fries were hot and perfectly crisp. If you want a quick simple lunch, you can't beat this place. read more

Downtown winston salem is covered in ten dollar lunches and while that's ok it's nice to have the "meat and two veggies" option. The food here is good and it's cheap. The owner has been doing this for decades and is a really nice guy. I usually get the meatloaf and broccoli cheese on Wednesday or Friday. The baked chicken is really good too. I'd read some nice reviews lately about this place we'd visited often in the '90s, before the change in ownership, so we thought we'd give it another shot, and stopped by for lunch! This is a worn place, bare bones seating, no ambiance.You make your meat and 2 choices from items in a steam table setup, cafeteria style, pay, and grab a seat. We settled on Fried Chicken with Lima Beans & Mashed Potatoes, and Country Style Steak with Cabbage and Fried Okra. Nothing was beyond very ordinary, much was not even at that level. The chicken was bland with a soggy crust, and the mashed potatoes were far from real, with a watery texture, and the Limas were under seasoned. The CS Steak had the taste and texture of the "mystery meat" served up in grammar school, and was covered with a shiny, dark brown gravy that added nothing. The Fried Okra was a soggy mess, and the Cabbage was over cooked with a strange aftertaste. This was very poor meal, in every aspect. Maybe they do a good breakfast here, doubt we'll test those water though. read more

Being use to the NY Diners, I was ecstatic when I found this place. You can get breakfast all day and to your liking. Omelettes are fluffy with the perfect combination of cheese and other ingredients. I always get a side of bacon and they give you a lot. It is not underdone or over cooked, it is just right and taste fresh, not like it has been sitting around all day. Drinks are self serve with free refills. If your not on the mood for breakfast, they have a great selection of burgers, sandwiches and a cafeteria style line with an entry and side. I went here for breakfast today after getting a haircut as I was curious about it. Glad I did because I enjoyed myself. Murphy's is this mom and pop, blue collar diner located on the very corner of third and cherry street in Winston. It's really old fashioned and far from fancy which I like because you can tell they are more about service and preparing good food as oppose to these other gimmicks that some restaurants have. Anyways, the menu is on a chalkboard to your left immediately after you walk in. And it's set up kind of like cafeteria style where you have your tray and through the glass you can see different items that would be available to get. Since I got breakfast everything was made to order so I was totally fine with that. I got the French toast breakfast special which came with two slices of French toast, two eggs (I added cheese), and bacon. I also got an order of hashbrowns too and an orange juice. The eggs were good and you can tell put out a lot of cheese in them which I liked, the bacon was crispy and the hashbrowns were piping hot as you can tell they had JUST been made! The French toast was good, although it would be better if they got the Texas toast bread and uses that instead so it would not be flimsy. It should also be noted that orange juice does NOT have free refills here. All came out for a total of a little over 10 bucks..not bad. I would come here again and plan to for lunch. The food here was very good but that was about it. The dinner didn't seem clean. I even got locked in the restroom and had to get myself out after many many try's. The staff didn't know how to smile at all. It's a small dinner. I think if they were friendly or smiled it would have been much better. People walking in and coming up to you while your eating asking if they can pray for you (I guess I look like a sinner) was not fun when all you want is to sit down with your wife and enjoy your meal. I've wanted to come here for so long and finally got the chance this past weekend. It is a family run, honest to God, old fashioned grill. I went in wanting one thing and ended up with a fried bologna sandwich. My friend got the Carolina burger and if you get one thing here, get this. You ave the menu at the front of the line and you order at the end. It took about five minutes for the food to come out and it was staggered based on the order. Its a small space that is focused on food and little else. The menu is right at the front when you walk in. You order at the counter and pay right then and there. It was a relatively short wait as I had arrived about 15 minutes after they opened. Even then there were multiple people there already and eating. The portions are generous and a little goes a long way. For less than $7, I got 2 eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, toast & coffee. This is definitely a worthy place to go. This is one of my favorite breakfast places in Winston-Salem. It is family owned and the prices are very reasonable. During lunch it's served cafeteria style. You get a meat two sides and bread for 7.25. Each day they have different lunch specials. Check their website to see what the special is for whatever day you decide to go. Usually for breakfast I get eggs, bacon, grits or home fries and bread for about 5.00. When you want a nice, no frills place to eat, stop by here. We arrived on a Saturday around 10am, no line, no wait. My husband had the bacon egg and cheese on toast. I had the bacon and American cheese omelette. Both cooked to perfection. The shredded hashbrowns were seasoned well. For the price we paid we got decent portions and food was excellent.
