It's a nice quaint Japanese restaurant tucked away in downtown Hampton. The staff and chef were very friendly and service was excellent. The restaurant was full with patrons which is a good sign. We ordered edamame and spring rolls for apps & a variety of Maki rolls and sushi's for our dinner. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Our waitress was on point with our order. I was in town with my daughter for a gymnastics meet and because she loves sushi we decided to come here for dinner. I am giving this 3 stars vs 4 stars because of the service. The food here is just decent. It's expensive, over priced IMO. My son wanted stir fried UDON, it wasn't on their menu. They agreed to make it as a special request, however, at an additional cost. My family and I have been coming here for years. Our old neighbors first introduced us to it and we've been going ever since. This is one of the best sushi restaurants in town IMO. It's nestled in Hampton's historic downtown area, so while enjoying lunch here, you can also take a walk through Queens Way and enjoy some other great businesses or the lovely waterfront. Nice quaint restaurant nestled in downtown Hampton. Some of the freshest sushi I've had here in a while. I shared spicy tuna roll, California rook and shrimp tempura and although all was good my favorite was the tuna roll. I also tried the pan fried gyoza...one word BOMB! make sure you get that it had the perfect crisp and taste and the dipping sauce was perfect. The kalbi as the main course was disappointing though... it was overpriced and had no flavor, very bland would not recommend of try again. The service was decent nothing spectacular. It's been a very long time since I've been to Musasi but it's still a good choice for a quick lunch in downtown Hampton. We were seated immediately and our orders were taken promptly. I ordered a bento box. Miso soup came with it and it was as expected. But honestly, I forgot how tasty the salmon teriyaki is. It's cooked really well and the other box contents complement the entree well. My husband ordered the sushi and sashimi combo and seemed pleased. 4 Stars! This could have been 3 or 4. It's an oldie but goodie, but part of the restaurant did feel quite old. Overall the food was good and the salmon pushed me to 4. Service was quick and friendly as well. read more

We came here on Valentine's day and it was packed! It was about at least a 40min wait after ordering but that was expected as they were short on staff like most other businesses. Besides the wait time, the sushi was quality! This place has been in business for 25 years now and I would definitely come back here to dine on a less busy day! Ambiance was nice and quaint. My favorite rolls were the Hot Seoul roll and salmon roll. They did not skimp on the yellowtail roll either. I did not favor the volcano roll as much as I thought I would have. The fried tofu was great but at the price of an appetizer, I would have ordered another sushi roll. Bottom line, this a solid sushi restaurant that won't disappoint you. First be aware of split hours if you're contemplating a late lunch. Last time: Special grilled squid was excellent, and we both had noodle soups on a cold rainy day. I grew up in Virginia, loved sushi, but when I moved to cali I realized VA sushi was trash. Fast forward to now, my husband came to visit my family in VA, and he really wanted sushi and I was a bit nervous. But I researched and found this place and MAN WAS IT AMAZING!! My husband is basically a food critique so when he says sushi is good, he means it. Sushi rice was delicious, the fish selection for their nigiri was spot on. The salmon was such a beautiful taste. Bulgogi is good, a little salty but when you mix with rice is just amazing. Price is pretty much what you are getting, so price is definitely worth it. Also, our waitress was so nice and helpful. She encouraged me to try the fried red bean ice cream which was the best decision because it was delicious. Totally will be coming back here when we are in Virginia!!!! read more

Service was fine, nothing wrong with the ambiance. I went in here wanting sushi so I ordered a sushi deluxe which had a bunch of nigiri and a roll. The salmon was dull in color, it didn't snap back when you poked it with a chopstick, and smelled bad like smelly socks. All signs of fish that has gone bad. I had made the mistake of trying to eat one piece of it and it tasted as if it was about to go off. There was another fish nigiri that I couldn't identify and I had to spit it into my napkin because the texture was incredibly spongy and it had some kind of jelly-like texture inside and a snappy outside? I'm really not sure. I love fish of all kinds and different kind of sushi but this place was not it. I've never had sushi so bad that I couldn't finish the meal before. We went on a Saturday mid-afternoon, maybe the fish was on its last day of freshness? I would recommend for them to restock the fish for sashimi and sushi perhaps a day earlier than they do right now. I wish I had taken a picture of the salmon. One of the nigiri was all mangled on one end and that bright orange color that salmon normally has was instead an almost grey-looking orange. I was so disappointed. I really wanted to like this place because it's a cute location. The takoyaki was lovely. My girlfriend had gotten the beef bulgogi and that tasted really good, too. read more

Long overdue review. I've eaten at Musasi several times a month for the last year. They are an absolute gem on the Peninsula. Sushi: yes. Be adventurous or stick to your favorites. Low-frills. Delicious, well prepared, and classic. I absolutely love coming here for sushi. Take away orders also available and highly recommended. Not the cheapest but certainly among the best. Tempura veggies or tempura shrimp and veggies are a great choice. Steamed gyoza is a must. Bibimbop it served hot and in a big stone bowl. It's a crackling, steamy, immersive food experience. The service is always good and there's a traditional feel to the environment and presentation. In the back (or front) they have a small outdoor patio with a couple of tables. There's a small vegetable and herb garden along the wall which is super charming. Get some chilled sake and enjoy. read more

The staff was very welcoming and paid attention to every detail of our order. We had a young man with us who had not had sushi before. Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. We arrived around 6 and were the first ones here. A few people trickled in after us and a few people got take out. We got the soft shell crab for appetizer. It was very crispy and cut into 4 pieces. It was smothered in teriyaki sauce so if you don't like teriyaki sauce, you're kind of screwed. For entree, my husband got the combination seafood and I got the Nabeyki Udon which came with a fried shrimp tempura, chicken, fish and an egg. Noodles were good and broth was good but it was nothing that made me go "wow" it was mediocre. It's definitely something that could be shared between two people, it was a huge bowl. Not bad, but not the best either. The combination seafood had large shrimp, scallops, a good amount of mussels, squid and a ton of veggies. The sauce was quite spicy. Again it was good, but nothing specular. I got green tea fried ice cream for dessert, and again it was just mediocre. I did like that the ice cream was soft and wasn't frozen rock solid like some fried ice cream. The price is another reason I have it 3 stars. It was kind of pricy. The soft shell crab was $14.95 each and it was a small piece of crab. The bibimbop is $16.95 when in most restaurants it's only $13ish. Granted, the portions were quite large. The fried ice cream was $7.95 when most places charge $4 and that ice cream wasn't that large. The server was very friendly and was decent. She didn't refill my water though, but luckily I didn't need more. She was also the only one there handling all the tables and the take out orders. I was excited to try this place based on the high reviews and hoping for a good Japanese place in Hampton but sadly, I don't think I will be back. No frill, sushi house. Visited with my Husband on a freezing Saturday night. We were sat promptly at a window seat. Was a bit chilly in the restaurant and seen another couple be sat, just leave right after. We decided to split the sushi boat after it was recommended by our server. We were first served a small salad, and the dressing was amazing. It was peanut based and I couldn't get enough. Next we were served miso soup, it wasn't the best-could've used more flavor and be warmer. The sushi boat contained mainly sushi, and then three different maki rolls. I was impressed with the value of fish we got, compared to others I've ordered in the area. The fish to rice ratio was perfect, and the fish quality was impressive. I'm actually very disappointed :( My husband decided to take me out to dinner after being sick in bed all day and decided on Musasi. The ratings here on Yelp are good so we were excited to give this place a try. Walking in, there were only a few diners in the restaurant but that didn't change our excitement. It's a little hole in the wall-y so our hopes were up that this place would be great and we'll have a new restaurant to go to close to home. We started with their scallion pancake and gyoza both of which I didn't care for. The gyoza was deep fried which made the shell hard and crunchy and the filling didn't taste very fresh. The scallion pancake was very mushy and lacked flavor. For our entrees we had a tonkatsu don and their bibimbap, The bibimbap was filled with potential. It came out sizzling and it looked beautiful. Once I mixed everything in though, it didn't have much flavor. I kept adding the hot sauce and salt and in the end that's all I could taste. The tonkatsu don wasn't desirable either. It had more flavor than the bibimbap but it wasn't something to come back to. The reason for the two stars was the service. They're great and friendly and willing to do what they can to make your experience worth while. I just keep wishing that the food was as good as their hospitality. read more

Quaint little restaurant tucked away off the street between other businesses, with a nice little outdoor eating area out front. Nice bar area with tables and plenty of additional seating inside. (5/5/2021) First visit. Review: I very excellent restaurant. The decor is perfect for that right date night away from the 'hustle and bustle'. It's perfect quaint location and decor make it perfect for business talks. I first met the Gentleman and Lady in April. My wife doesn't do seafood so we wanted to try dishes that she might like. I was promised the seafood in the future. The noodles chicken, beef, rice, vegetables, soup and salad left an excellent taste in my mouth. I speculated by the detail of the presentation of the overall atmosphere that we experienced, that we'd be dealing with an artist who takes his trade very seriously. When we got home with the food (we had drinks there) our taste buds confirmed it. We'll certainly be going back to help out our newly found LOCAL business. Regardless of the inflation, we gave the Lady an excellent tip. It pays to have quality. Thank you for the experience. read more

This place was fantastic! Best sushi I have had in this area. The rolls are huge! The fish was so, so fresh. The shumai was so tender and you could taste the chunks of shrimp. I ordered spicy tuna, seaweed salad, deep fried spicy tuna, California and shrimp tempura rolls. I can't say enough good things. I was blown away. Everything was just so good.
