    Birthday gong
    Lavinia S.

What an amazing 10th and 50th birthdays we had! Our little one wanted Hibachi for her special dinner and the hubby being the best obliged. We had filet mignon, scallops, shrimp and the chicken! Our chef Ce was so wonderful and gave our little one the most attention at the table. She felt like a movie star! Every server, chef and Hostess went out of their way to make the day wonderful. The food was cooked perfectly and the show ended with a birthday ring of the gong with the entire place singing English and Japanese birthday songs. Definitely the place to go for dinner or a special occasion.

We have eaten here before and have always been pleased with the food and the service. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be going back. We walked in on a weekday, Tuesday , around 8. There were no other customers. We were greeted and promptly seated. The strawberry daiquiri was beyond sweet, like it was only mixer. The salad was very skimpy and and plated horribly. The dressing was flavorful. The soup was basic. Our waitress checked on us only when she brought me my drink. The soy sauce and salt/pepper shakers were very dirty and sticky. We cleaned them off ourselves. The staff sat at the bar right behind us. You could hear their conversations over ours. The Chef was great. The meat and scallops were cooked perfectly. After we finished we had to ask for our check and for a box since we were not checked on. I don't normally complain about service and needing attention but for the prices and what we spent, I did expect better service than I'd get at Mc. Donalds.

    Hair

this is the WORSE food experience I've had in a restaurant it was unclean but the worse part about it was me and my best friend both found hair in our food from different parts of the head it was extremely gross and unsanitary but it gets worse because we I said something about it the man tried to tell me it's our hair we BOTH have BLONDE and BLUE hair the guy tried to argue with me about who's hair it was and not trying to accept the fact that I have BLONDE HAIR. this is the most disgustingly the worse restaurant I've been to and it's an unhealthy environment when you can't even accept the fact that it's THIER workers hair and for you to be the manager and your acting this way is outrageous and trifling. DO NOT EAT HERE

Kinda felt rushed . I would give the food a 4/10 honestly . The atmosphere was calm besides the Big Bang when it's a birthday. I actually liked that part tho most places don't come and sing to you anymore . Also I have been to many hibachi spots but this by far has been the most "unprofessional" no sushi bar, they gave us FETTUCCINE NOODLES for lo mein ppl ! I really felt like I was getting punkd

I've been here twice now & the service is always top tier, when walking in the restaurant is very dimly lit with a bar straight ahead and seating to both sides. There is also a sushi bar (behind the main bar). When talking menu it is your typical hibachi style offerings. We got hibachi chicken and fried rice, which automatically comes with a hibachi shrimp appetizer (2 pieces). Our chef was super sweet & so quirky, he made us laugh with his jokes & never seemed to miss a beat while cooking! He seemed to really love what he does which showed in his skill set and final product. Our food was super delicious, I just wish less rice was given and more chicken added but nonetheless we enjoyed our visit very much! We will come back over and over again!!!

Great service & the cook was super entertaining. I ordered the scallops & they were cooked to perfection. The rest of the table was completed satisfied as well with the chicken, filet mignon, & salmon. Definitely get the sauces. The hot tea was delish & came in a beautiful tea pot. I'd definitely go back.

My Grubbing Buddies and I visited two different Hibachi grill restaurants within two weekends this month. This review will just be about the one we visited in Hampton, Virginia. Tokyo Japanese Steak House gladly took our 5 p.m. reservation for five people at the Hibachi table for the next day. We got there early, as entertaining flames were flying off the planchas and the crowds were laughing and applauding the chefs. It seems all Hibachi chefs do the same routine: (1) the big flame at first; (2) the volcano; (3) the Choo Choo train; (4) tossing shrimp into a guest's mouth, etc. There are some variations, but I never get tired of the routine. The food options are pretty much the same also: steak, shrimp, scallops, rice and vegetables (sometimes noodles). Before the entertainment, we had some delicious miso soup followed by a salad with some awesome ginger salad dressing. This restaurant appeared dark and old looking. I hadn't been there in quite some years. In fact, there were just two hibachi grills in the whole place back then and now there were at least seven. Overall, I loved the atmosphere of the place. There was no rush to put you out, even though there were long lines to get inside. I feel this place was the better of the two battling Hibachi grill restaurants. I would definitely return.

    Itemized bill
    Kim K.

Watch your bill carefully. The sign said tips automatically added to parties of five or more. We were a group of three and they added a 20% tip into the itemized bill. The credit card receipt provided a place to add a tip, with suggested dollar amounts for 18% 20% or 22%. Had I done an additional 20% on top of the credit card total (food, tax, the first tip) The net affect would've been a 44% tip overall. I understand if you choose to make tips mandatory. I don't like it but I understand it. But don't add a tip without telling me, and then asked me to tip 18% to 22% on top of that. At best, you're taking advantage of people who aren't paying attention. At worst it's just fundamentally deceit.

This is My first time checking this place out. Hubby and I wanted a fast healthy meal, so we chose sushi. As we walked back to the sushi bar we passed the hibachi area which seemed nice. The sushi bar was tiny, seating about 8 people total. Something to keep in mind if you're bringing several people. There are two menu options. Sushi and hot dishes. We went with sushi, a hand rolled spicy tuna, the playboy roll, an octopus roll and a dynamite roll. All of them were pretty good...my favorites were the dynamite and playboy rolls. Service: our server was excellent, but the sushi took a long time. Ambiance: was very casual but this is where the rating went down...unfortunately the place is a little run down. I would have liked to have seen the office equipment back out of the customers view, the wall had a huge chunk of plaster taken out of it, and a stack of what looked like bills o the shelves right in front of us. So, basically this review would have been stronger if the restaurant was in better shape. Hopefully something the owner will take to heart and make changes on.

More bark than bite. These people are very friendly.

Nice dim lighting inside as well! Our server was pleasant and attentive. Good at water refills and making sure our soup and salad came out quickly. Our hibachi chef was nice and did a good job at providing a fun show. All in the group had hibachi dinners that included fried rice, noodles, veggies, soup and salad. It was a going away party/early birthday dinner and we had some yummy oranges cut up for us. It was a sweet treat! The food was yummy and I enjoyed my hibachi chicken and all the sides that came with it! Yum yum sauce was slo delicious! Great hibachi place! Food wise it was all good and plentiful.

We arrived when it wasn't busy and were told there would be a 5-10 minute wait. After about five minutes, I asked about the delay after noticing staff and the manager chatting instead of seating guests. We were then seated, but waited another 10 minutes while multiple servers passed by without acknowledging us or taking our order. We ultimately decided to leave, and the manager didn't appear concerned or attempt to address the situation. Based on this experience, I won't be returning, especially with better dining options in the area.

It's mostly been hibachi dinners, but also mix in Happy Hour visits and last year, a visit for Newport News Restaurant Week. Let's see how this one turned out. When we walked inside, they had a nice crowd for lunch. Again, it was a holiday. We were able to be seated quickly and did take some time looking at the menu. Staff was busy and the waitress did take a minute to come to our table, but it really wasn't a rush on our day off. For my meal, I selected gyoza for appetizers and their stir-fried bento box with beef as the protein with hot spice. Everything that was cooked very well. The gyoza was full of flavor along with enough dipping sauce to help with each taste. The bento box was really good. There was enough protein and veggies included and the hot spice wasn't that spicy on the palate at all. A nice lunch that kept us full. Hayashi did deliver for the day. You know we'll be back :)

SKIP Kotobuki in Norfolk - Worst Sushi Experience EVER…read more Kotobuki in Ghent is a disaster. I gave this long-running spot a second chance, after a poor first experience, and it was a mistake. A friend insisted we return, and the service was shockingly bad, the sushi was subpar and the overall experience was the worst. From the moment you walk in, Kotobuki screams neglect: dead plants, servers dressed like they're doing yard work and a pervasive smell of old fry oil. We had reservations for the "traditional Japanese" sunken-table room, where we removed our shoes and climbed into our seats. One dirty pair of slippers sat at our table, while a random pair of construction boots lay abandoned nearby. The "ambiance" was completed by 70s soft rock -- Lionel Richie instead of "traditional Japanese" music. Our server took my order for a dirty Stoli martini, then disappeared for an absurd amount of time only to return and say they couldn't make it -- with no explanation. We hunted through the limited menu while our server vanished completely. The owner eventually stopped by, and I had to specifically request a sushi list. Tired of sitting cross-legged, I briefly put my feet into the pit under the table. Rather than place my bare feet on the filthy floor, I slipped my shoes back on for a moment. That's when the owner's daughter stormed over and aggressively accused me of saying, "Screw you and screw Kotobuki -- I'm not following the rules!" She launched into a rude, insulting lecture about "Japanese custom" while I sat there stunned. I immediately took my shoes off again, just to de-escalate, but the evening was ruined. No customer should be verbally assaulted over something as basic as not wanting bare feet on an obviously dirty floor. In an awkward position, not wanting to ruin the evening, I ordered my food. The sake was watery and flavorless, the house salad was sad, wilted iceberg lettuce drowning in bottled ginger dressing, and the sushi arrived lukewarm with questionable rice that called for a palate blinding amount of wasabi. It was boring, poorly prepared, and far below average. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Hand to God! Had this not been a special evening with a dear friend, I would have walked out the second the owner's daughter chastised me at the table. Management at Kotobuki clearly doesn't care about customer service or basic standards -- especially when family members are allowed to treat patrons this way. "Japanese tradition" doesn't excuse poor hygiene, rude staff or substandard food. In America, we have health codes for a reason. If you want decent sushi in Norfolk, go literally anywhere else. Kotobuki is just a lazy dive. There's nothing special on the menu, very little sushi selection and nobody seems to care. If you choose to ignore this warning, lower your expectations folks, you are about to be disappointed. The only thing good about this restaurant, is the opportunity to tell you how much it sucked.
