"Nepalese and Indian food in downtown Raleigh, near Marriott" With a great location, this is VERY close to the Raleigh Convention Center. We arrived on a Thursday night at 6pm with a group of 5. The dining area didn't really accommodate a group that size, but they made it work by moving tables around, which was nice. The place was not very large, but there was maybe only one other family eating inside. The bathroom was clean. I split two dishes with my son-- salmon tikka masala and shrimp (prawn) saag, both coming with rice. We were given some papadum, I think, as a snack as we waited on the food, along with some spicy dips. Food came in maybe 10 minutes or so, which was great timing. However, I have to say, both dishes we tried were underwhelming. The shrimp was oddly translucent and not very flavorful in its dish, and the spinach in the saag wasn't especially tasty (though it did have a nice spiciness). The tikka masala sauce was great, but the salmon also was pretty underwhelming. We both said we'd probably just get chicken next time and not splurge the extra for the salmon. No dish was "bad", but just we expected them to be delicious and they were just OK. I'm just really surprised given how many people said this was the "best Indian" they'd had. The staff were friendly-- refilled drinks well and were good at answering questions. And the price was reasonable. Altogether, I'll give it 4 stars given the great location, good service, good price, but not 5 given the food was "just OK". Realistically, I probably wouldn't go back-- we have lots of great Indian in Durham and Chapel Hill, so I'd rather wait and get that. read more

"Nepali vs Indian food" While there are many similarities, Nepali food is generally deemed less spicy both in heat level and flavor. We noticed less flavor than we've typically experienced and love from Indian restaurants we've tried in the past. We thought complimentary pappadum tasted as if it had been sitting for a while, and the chutneys just didn't have the zing we've grown accustomed to. We both ordered a fish dish and it was solid. Service was pleasant and accommodating. Restaurant itself is small, and quarters are a big tight. Business was brisk and it appears to be a fan favorite. Not sure if we had a one off experience, or if we prefer a different flavor profile. If I'm in the area I might try again. read more

Really solid Nepali/North Indian food for the price and location in downtown Raleigh! I appreciated the free papadum with different chutneys. The jhol momos were nice but a bit salty for my liking. The chicken tikka was fantastic and I liked the ratio of salty to sweet(ish). The service was incredibly quick; our food came out in less than 10 minutes. This is one of the best Indian restaurants I've visited, and its location right on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh makes it an easy and inviting stop in the heart of the city. The dining room offers full waiter service, with booths and tables arranged around a central take-out ordering and pickup area. It creates a lively, welcoming atmosphere that works equally well for dine-in guests and those grabbing food to go. The menu features Nepalese and Indian cuisine, including vegetarian and seafood options. We began with Mustang Cauliflower and Chicken Chili as appetizers. Both dishes were packed with bold flavor, excellent texture, and just the right amount of heat. I appreciated being able to choose the spice level, and each dish delivered a satisfying balance of warmth, seasoning, and freshness. The cauliflower was perfectly cooked--crisp on the outside and tender inside--while the chicken chili had a deep, savory flavor that lingered pleasantly. For entrées, I ordered the Saag Paneer at medium heat, and my dining partner chose the Chicken Vindaloo. Both arrived steaming hot and beautifully presented, accompanied by rice. The Saag Paneer was rich, earthy, and comforting, with tender paneer throughout, while the Vindaloo had a bold, well-developed spice profile that was robust without being overwhelming. We each enjoyed a Mango Lassi, which was cool, smooth, and refreshing--an ideal contrast to the spices. I ordered the Cheese Naan, and my guest had the Garlic Naan. The Cheese Naan deserves special mention: warm, indulgent, and wonderfully unique. It was easily one of the standout items of the meal, and I would happily return just for that naan alone--if I didn't enjoy everything else so much. What a gem! The dining room is surprisingly sparse for the location on Fayetteville Street but the food makes up for lack of decor. Our very sweet server was helpful in recommending dishes when we asked and we ended up sharing an order of Papadam (tortilla sized crackers served with dipping sauces), Cheese Naan - so good, an order of Chicken Momo (steamed chicken dumplings with chutney) and Mustang Chicken Curry (really tender chicken ordered mild so we could really taste the spices) Our meal was fantastic and we were too full for dessert... though it was tempting! read more

Mustang house was an interesting experience! The food was good. Our server was incredibly attentive.. chicken tikka masala was well executed, as was the golbi appetizer. The paratha was slightly more dry than we are used to. And the fruits filled nan was tasty however it was made with more processed ingredients than we had expected. Upon arrival, the ambience and setting was interesting, it definitely feels more like a takeout place than a full restaurant and could benefit from warmer lighting and more thoughtful decor. I was staying within walking distance, the weather was rainy and miserable, and I stumbled across Mustang House on Yelp. I decided to risk my hair and leave the cozy warmth of my hotel room to mosey on down and grab some takeout. I went with my usuals--Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic naan. My order was ready right on time and still hot when I made it back to the room. The rice was cooked perfectly, the naan was soft and flavorful, and the Chicken Tikka Masala was... good. Just good. A few pieces of chicken were a bit tough, but the creamy, flavorful sauce helped make up for it. All in all, Mustang House saved the night, and I appreciated the convenience. That said, next time I'm in the area, I'll probably branch out and try some other Indian spots. read more

I expected this to be a highbrow place, but it's quite casual and is across from the convention center. I don't know where the name comes from, but this is a Nepali restaurant, and it is a really good one. Not only was my food fresh and dynamic in flavor, I received excellent service. When a free papadum with three sauces was delivered to my table, they noted which sauce I liked the best (the chili sauce) and brought me an extra bowl of it without asking. And what the hell, I just went and dumped it on everything else. Not that this was really necessary. While I could have ordered soybeans or a salad or something, I thought their potatoes would be really well prepared and I was right. Whole peppercorns and some leaves were stir-fried in with those delicious potatoes. A classic of Nepali cuisine, the momos I ordered were among the most delightful dumplings I've ever had, being perfectly soft in texture and hearty in flavor, including the spicy soup I ordered them to be served in. A chai came thankfully unsweetened. The bathroom could use a little renovation, but to have gotten this food at this price, I could hardly complain. We had the Butter Chicken, Kadhai Chicken, and Aloo Gobi. They were all very tasty. We liked the Butter Chicken and Aloo Gobi the most (we got the Aloo Gobi extra spicy). The Sweet Sassi drink was a standard yoghurt drink and very good. Prices are great. Decor is very very basic. Seemed like more of a ToGo restaurant. No beer or alcohol is served. Had lunch here while visiting Raleigh for a conference. These momos were very different from the ones I've had in Queens, NY but still very tasty. These were curry flavored chicken in a spicy yellow sauce/soup. There are a few different ones on the menu, and the server kindly explained the differences. Momos were tender and cooked just right. These are the ones he said were "soup dumplings" but they should be described as "dumplings in soup" to avoid confusion with xiao long bao. Also tried pani puri for the first time, which was a refreshing app but surprisingly spicy. I drank a lot of chai to help with the heat. You also get the complimentary crispy flatbread (papadum?) with sauces before your meal. read more

As a visitor to Raleigh, I was excited to see an Indian place downtown. I went in for dinner and tried the butter chicken. Excellent. Came back the next two days for lunch (lamb curry, and mustang curry) both awesome. The food is great, the service is attentive, and I had the same server/manager all three meals. I was researching restaurants in the Raleigh, NC downtown area where my friend and I could eat dinner before going to a concert. I came across the Mustang House restaurant and saw great reviews, so we decided to try it. I made reservations online two days before. I was running a little late for my reservation, so I called to let them know. They were very receptive and said that's not a problem. My friend had arrived before I did and was already seated at our table by the time I showed up, so I just walked in to where she was. Our server was professional and gave us a few minutes to peruse the menu. Our order was taken in a timely manner, and our food also arrived in a timely manner. Throughout our dining experience, our server checked in on us from time to time to remove empty dishes, and check to see if we were okay or needed anything else. We enjoyed all dishes. My friend expressed that her salad tasted good and was crisp and fresh. We both enjoyed our entrées. I had the prawn curry with basmati rice. The dish was very flavorful, and the basmati rice was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed having the choice on the level of spiciness that I wanted. This customization enabled me to have the spiciness that I wanted and enjoy the flavor of the food without it being unbearably spicy. The portion sizes were adequate. I also ordered a mango lassi which I loved. The garlic naan bread was also really good. It was not overbearing with garlic and was not overly seasoned so it worked well with the additional spices left for us with the Pratha bread. It is not a very large restaurant; however, it is a nice size, doesn't have many "bells and whistles", and allows for a comfortable and peaceful dining experience. I ordered the lamb saag which was very tasty. All of the food was well prepared and fresh. The salad greens and tomato were crisp and ripe. The naan was prepared with just the right balance of crisp yet soft. The rice just the correct balance of moisture. And I ordered a side of fries that were just perfection. The staff were nice and the manager even came by my table to check that my expectations were met. The restaurant is small and unassuming but don't let that deter you from a great meal. I noticed that they also do a lot of takeout. My only advice is that for me, Indian food is best when it is eaten right as it is prepared, so my choice is to eat it at the restaurant when it is ready. Takeout is fine but the blending of flavors, spices and oils is best when served right away. I'll be returning here soon! read more

The veggie samosas were crispy on the outside with lots of flavor on the inside. It paired well with the 3 sauces that come with the papdum. The chicken c momo was out favorite dish. Crispy dumpling dressed in an amazing chili sauce. The lamb saag was excellent. The spinach was so soft and fluffy. My only average dish was the lamb curry. Very tasty! We enjoyed the MOMO dumplings - to someone unfamiliar with this cuisine, it was a traditional dumpling but on the inside it was filled with a curry-tasting filling. The chicken choila was my favorite, the medium spice was mild for us (I was nervous!) But I really enjoyed the crunchy black seeds in it, very onion heavy, we had to leave some behind. We got dessert too - kinda like donuts soaked in sugar syrup, we didn't taste any rose flavor though. Will definitely want to return here and explore the menu further.
