I had to change my driver's license. I couldn't do it on line because I changed my name. The service by itself was great except one thing. I was waiting for 3,5 hours in line. I was warned at the first window while getting a number that I had to wait at least for 3 hours. I am sure it is possible to organize everything to avoid 3 hours waiting. MVA express in Silver Spring you get your ticket right away, and then it's a two hour plus wait.... So I looked online, MVA Gaithersburg said 38 minute wait for drivers license renewals. It said that when I got there, as I waited in the first line. And as I waited again for my number to be called. It took me 45 minutes in the first line to get a ticket for that 38 minute wait to start. And it was just about 40 minutes when they called my number. The only thing more annoying than long wait times is being lied to about how long the wait will be. Be transparent, set realistic expectations, and then people won't be as upset about waiting around for close to two hours for a "38 minute" wait. read more

A trip to your local motor vehicle authority is not expected to be a fun trip - something that you will mention in your year end family review. But this location of the MVA does know how to make the pain more palatable. The service desk does a good job in reviewing all your documents before handing you a service ticket number. This was good for me as I was missing a couple of documents and was saved the pain of waiting for my number to be called only to be sent back home. I did have to come back a second time but this time I did not have to wait in line to get a ticket :) The wait to be serviced was the same like other locations - i.e. one hour, but the service after that was quick, efficient, and courteous. There, I used those three words in one sentence to say something good about the MVA! But I cannot lie :) I know the thought of going to the MVA gives most folks goose bumps, but my experience here was better than expected. Now if the total process took under an hour, then I would have bumped up my review to 4 stars! read more

After experiencing an annoying situation at the other MVA in Gaithersburg I decided to head over to this one. When I arrived this location was packed. I could not believe how many people were at the MVA in the middle of the day. I got in line and waited to be seen at the service desk. There was an employee walking up to customers in line to make sure everyone had the documentation they needed. When the employee got to me he realized I had an appointment and was able to get me a number before being seen at the service desk. I went and sat down on an extremely uncomfortable bench and waited my turn. After about 15 minutes it was my turn. I'm pretty sure they were doing training for new staff when I went. While this process took slightly longer I can totally understand having to train employees. Every employee I dealt with at this location was friendly and helpful. Information was explain thoroughly to me and I left feeling confident that I would receive my drivers license in the mail. To my surprise I received my drivers license in the mail within three business days. While place is a little hectic and completely packed, the Employees were friendlier and more helpful than the other location Gaithersburg. read more

What a miserable place with the rudest most obnoxious staff! They talk down to you and you can't get anywhere! Apparently if you are getting real ID documents scanned, making an appointment doesn't matter! They just give you an L number no matter what...after they make you wait until your appointment time!! I had an appointment and watched 3 rounds of appointments go by without calling me. I spoke with a supervisor but he was no help....like talking to a brick wall...that was after complaining to the obnoxious lady giving out numbers....they are all just full of excuses. There are times when it is best for a state employee to keep their views of the public to themselves. It is easy to draw an incorrect conclusion about why someone is there on a given day. The apology was totally insincere, and I wasn't taken seriously by the supervisor whom I had to wait for at least another half an hour to speak to. I was not able to accomplish my goal today. Part of the reason is because the website is not particularly friendly. Furthermore, in the past when I've tried to input my driver's license identification number into the phone, the system has hung up on me. How about developing friendlier software both for the phone and your website? Then, you can work on real customer service! I've seen adverse actions taken for less of an infraction then the one by the employee. If I could give you minus rating I would do so. I was a federal employee and in the past have been very supportive of other federal and state employees. read more

Horrible mva, very slow, rude people. Even with scheduling an appointment to get a "real id" it toke 40 minutes. Without an appointment it takes 2-3 hours. I came with a folder with all the evidences they needed so they had to look for another reason to deny me. They said to bring a w2 in top of my green card. My green card is a stamp in my passport because USCIS is backlogged and they keep stamping my passport for the last 5 years. Of course the MVA won't accept it and in addition to - I have my own business so I don't have W2, I pay myself. Conclusion - no real id for me, will have to find another state where I can do a driver license there. read more

A trip to the MVA is an exercise in futility as I learned when I took my daughter to test for her learners permit. The information on the website is incredibly misleading. The 38 minute wait time (as quoted by the MVA website) was actually a wait time of OVER 3 HOURS. When my daughter's number was finally called, the camera was broken and we waited another 15 minutes while the representative restarted her computer 3 times. Coincidentally the easiest part of the trip was the test itself. Ridiculous way to spend a morning. read more

Anyone who rates a DMV 5 stars is kissing ass. I came prepared on a Tuesday at 9am for "new Maryland resident" services - title, registration, and license. I was out in 1.5 hours. No negativity to report, except with the lady at the front who was extremely rude from the get-go. I remained polite, answered her questions, said thank you, and she seemed to have lightened up a bit by the end of our brief exchange. The experience is fine if you don't take it personally and come prepared. I called the Glen Burnie location to ensure my out-of-state documents had been received prior to planning my visit to the Gaithersburg MVA. The rep was very kind, and explained exactly what I needed to bring to the MVA. It was helpful, as all of the information online proved to be overwhelming for a new resident to the state. read more

The Call Center is absolutely useless. I ordered a new drivers license and it was not delivered, after weeks we called to ask where it was. They said it failed to deliver even though it was the right address and the right address on the ID. It was returned to the MVA and they said to ask USPS. I talked to USPS and they said the MVA does this all the time, and it's not stored with them unless you pay extra for priority shipping. Back to the MVA and they said they don't know where the ID is and it could have been destroyed. I didn't get any notice or email or letter saying this would happen or any warning. They said to get a new ID I had to make a new appointment and pay again for the ID and recommended priority shipping so it wouldn't get lost. I said I'm not paying for the ID again if you messed up the shipping and then destroyed the ID? Then they said we don't give out free products. They even said "we don't do anything over the phone just give general information." What's the point of a call center if you can't do anything? I called multiple times and got routed to the same people that can't do anything? In what world would you pay and order a product then they don't ship it to you correctly knowing that the address is correct because it's legally written on the ID itself, get it returned to them, then they "might have" destroyed it, has no idea where it is, then tell you to schedule an appointment and buy the product again and recommends to pay extra for priority shipping? It's just an unbelievable response from the MVA and such a messed up and convoluted system. read more

It only took 3 states but I have finally found a DOT/MVA/DMV like you see on comedy shows - rude, overworked and indifferent staff who don't or can't seem to be bothered with the simplest of questions. Hell to the no. I get that the employees deal with some characters here. People who don't follow instructions well, people who don't bring the required documents, etc. and then get angry and blame the employees. I used to be a manager at a major rental car company; I get that dealing with the general public all day can be exhausting. I've completed drivers license transactions here before with surprising efficiency, with employees that ranged from indifferent to very friendly. None of that, however, excuses my most recent experience here. I'm living in Bethesda for the summer, and Maryland has this really stupid law that if your car is here longer than 60 days, you must either register it here or get something called a nonresident permit. Since I didn't want to register it in Maryland and then register it in Louisiana all over again 4 months later, I decided a nonresident permit was the best option. I went online, I called the MVA ahead of time, and showed up with my Louisiana license, registration, and insurance card. I'm not going to go into every detail of my interaction with the employees I dealt with because it'll just put me in a terrible mood, but to summarize, Jessica (who claimed to be a supervisor) and Cyndi were 2 of the most incompetent, rudest people I'd ever met anywhere; they should be put in positions where dealing with humans is not a requirement. Both of them first claimed a nonresident permit wasn't necessary, then they claimed I didn't have the right paperwork, then they made me fill out the same paperwork all over again, then when they finally did give the permit they refused to give it to me for the full term, completely ignoring what the MVA website said. It should also be mentioned that I asked to speak with the branch manager, Allan Holloway, multiple times while this debacle was going on, but he refused to speak with me. After the experience, I did some Google-fu and found the email address for the statewide MVA administrator. Miraculously, after emailing her, Mr. Holloway decided to get involved; he called me a couple days later with a (half-assed) apology and a promise to mail me a nonresident permit that was valid for the proper length of time; said permit arrived in the mail a few days later. Louisiana ranks dead last in pretty much every national ranking, but I'll deal with their DMV any day of the week over this hellhole; at least the employees understand southern hospitality and know how to do their jobs. read more

Not a good experience for me. I've lived in 4 states and this dmv was by far the worst. Everyone knows going to the dmv is going to be bad, but this one takes the cake. Definitely make an appointment for your needs ahead of time! God almighty. It took me three separate trips here to get what I needed to do done. The first two I had to leave half way through the process , I just could not handle it any more. Part of the problem is that I am belabouring under the mistaken assumption that this is a service facility whose sole objective is to serve citizens. Nope. This place exists to employ the most amount of people who can lengthen the process considerably, and to their credit, they do that job exceptionally well. Why do you have to line up when you go in to get a number to get in another line? Why can you only do a maximum of three transactions per visit to a window? Why , after I fumble with the kiosk for 10 minutes does someone then tell me that it is not working? Why, after I do a change of address does the kiosk tel me it will send me a change of address kit. Why do i need a change of address kit, haven't I just changed my address? And by the way, which address are you going to send it to? Has anyone heard of this amazing new concept called one stop shopping, so I can do my license and car tags in one fell swoop rather than have to line up twice to do it? To their credit, all the people here are nice, and they follow the processes commendably well, but those processes have been designed by a crazy person. If I could say one positivr thing about it would be that there are some cool pictures of cars on the walls. read more

A few weeks ago, I sold my old car and leased a new vehicle. I read through the MVA instructions on the website about 50 times, and made sure I had everything mentioned on the website. I then drove 20 minutes to a tag-and-title place (the website said I could go there, in multiple places) and they told me I couldn't get my stuff done there because the car was too new. (Hey MVA, how about putting that on your website?). I then drove 30 minutes to the Gaithersburg location and waited over 30 minutes in the "line before the line", as I like to call it (basically the long line you have to stand in to get the number to stand in the primary line). She went through my paperwork, then asked me where my lease agreement was. Of course, the website doesn't say I need the lease agreement. I literally cried- I had a really long day and was exhausted- and she just told me I had to come back. I finally mustered up the courage to go back to this MVA location the next week. I left my house around 9/9:15, and arrived around 9:45. I waited in the "line before the line" for over 30 minutes, even though it wasn't that long. After going through my paperwork multiple times, asking me for my license, etc., she told me I was good to go. I then sat down around 10:15 and waited. I finally got called around 11:30, and the guy seemed incredibly confused by my paperwork and the process. Around 11:45, he told me I didn't have a bill of sale- even though I had a receipt, he said it didn't say "bill of sale" on the top. I called the dealer to fax the bill of sale, and he made me sit back down and wait for my number to be called again. 45 minutes later, I went up to the desk and asked him what was going on and why nobody had called me. He found my fax, but said it didn't say "bill of sale" on the top, and he didn't know what to do. Eventually someone else told him that it was a bill of sale- it just didn't SAY bill of sale on it. Rocket science. He told me to sit back down, and my number was called again in a few minutes, luckily to another agent. She was incredibly nice and friendly and got me out of the place by 1:15pm, and hopefully it was all done correctly. Oh, and it cost me $200 because they wouldn't let me transfer my old tags because I went from owning a car to leasing a car, which somehow violates the transfer of tags rule (again, not mentioned on their website). Also, this place doesn't do vehicle services on Saturday, so expect to use one (or more) of your vacation days to do something simple like register a new vehicle. Overall: don't trust the MVA website. Don't expect your visit to be done in any reasonable amount of time. Don't expect that you will get an agent who knows anything. Don't expect anyone to care. Do expect to come back multiple times. Lastly, wear comfortable shoes, and bring some sort of anti-anxiety medication. read more

I'm giving five stars today after many years of being tortured by the wait here only because I think I finally figured out how to break the torture system. 1- check the MVA website and make SURE you have ALL of the documents required plus a couple of extras just in case. Example- last time I went, they would not accept my electric bill as proof of residency because my name was missing one S. So Jessica was spelled jesica so NO DICE. 2. They open at 8:30 am. GET THERE BY 8am. 3. Once you arrive, make sure you stand in the correct line. One line is for licensing, one line is for tags. 4. Research the website for things you can actually do online so you don't even have to go to MVA. Now you can renew many things online - even your drivers license and tags! 5. Treat the employees how you want to be treated. They have a tough job too. 6. Research what you can do at the kiosks there on your own such as returning plates. Again this will keep you out of the long lines. If everyone goes prepared and knows what lines to go to or does what they can online, this place will get you in and out quickly. I arrived at 8am. I was 40th in line at the license line. I was in and out in less than an hour. Not bad for the MVA. read more

Wow have things improved here since I last went. License renewals are quick and streamlined quite efficiently, credit cards are accepted without a surcharge, and the staff are nice. As for the people, it seems they are much more prepared with their documentations when going in for services which makes things astronomically better. One of the key standouts here is that there are yellow kiosks that could take care of of your needs electronically (such as your registration). I think this is fantastic since you don't have to wait in an extremely long line for services besides your driver's license. Kudos to MVA for listening to customer feedback! read more

MVAs are notorious for their crappy experiences... and the Gaithersburg MVA is no exception. In the future, when they will be automated cars providing ride share for everyone and there´s no longer any use in license service, the Gaithersburg MVA surely has a spot waiting for it in Dante´s Ninth Circle. The surly employees here hate their job, and I certainly do not blame them because most of the patrons here come in with a terrible mindset. I think it was Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air who said the following: Attitude is everything. The MVA offers more than just car services; it teaches you how to wait. The MVA taught me the following activities to past the time and wait patiently: 1) Make up back story about the customers of the MVA The MVA bring all types of people together: rich, poor, old, young, children, adolescents, Latinos, Indians. There are not many places that can boast a diverse such a diverse crowd. Think about all the inspiration. You can deduct stories for every customer. You can brainstorm the relationship between that hot girl with that ugly looking guy. ¨Are they friends? Are they siblings? Was he her uber driver to the MVA?¨ You can wonder about the journey the Mexican family took to come to America, evading border patrol and future-president Donald Trump. 2) Bring a book Books are great. I brought Game of Thrones book 1. I was on page 200. By the time I left, I was on page 300. It was great. I must have read through six sexual intercourse and two deaths. 3) Talk to the fresh Chinese person waiting next to you Chinese people are known for their rich wisdom and Confucian-like sayings. They can offer great advice about how to get through the crappiness of life such as eating MSG drenched General Tso´s Chicken. This one time, I asked the Chinese person next to me about great restaurants that offer authentic Chinese food. He told me how he was so excited to come to America and how he is still amazed everyday by the richness of America and the kindness of everyone. He was smiling throughout his entire wait. 4) Use your Smartphone MVAs offer free wifi. I guess you can catch up Facebook stalking that cute Starbucks barista you should have asked out so that next time you go there, you can boast how much you two have in common. The MVA offers many possibilities. Don´t come in thinking that you are wasting your time. Think of it as added time, an opportunity to do one of the aforementioned activities. _______________________ With all that being said, if I have not convinced you about the time earned at the MVA, go online and see if there are other ways to get what you need done. They have kiosks in the MVA and the MVA express. Kiosks provide an innumerable amount of your basic services. If you can´t go to a kiosk, see if you can go to the MVA express. Then if you have to go to the MVA, just come early, prick. The MVA opens at 8:30 everyday (but Sunday) so be there at 8:00 a.m. read more

Third time coming here to try and get a Maryland driver's license. Transferring from another state. I presented the following documents to get a Maryland driver's license. For the record, my license is clean (miraculous, in fact) and everything else is up to date. 1) Valid US passport 2) Lease contract 3) Utility bill 4) health care card with proof of residence 5) Geico proof of insurance 6) Geico proof of address 7) 1099 stating I live in maryland 8) phone bill with proof of residence 9) W2 10) Drivers license from other state (2nd piece of proof that I indeed look like me) Unfortunately, I was denied. Why? Because my 1099 said "BRAD" instead of "BRADLEY". Every other form of information said Bradley. They don't accept GEICO forms. Second-rate company, apparently. First off, there has never been a stricter system in place for acceptance, anywhere. We're not talking about getting onto the Virgin Galactic! I'm not asking for clearance into the NSA. IT'S MARYLAND. MARYLAND. A state where if you want to buy whiskey, beer, and groceries, you have to go to three different stores. It's not New York. It's not California. It's Maryland. If there was a legal way around it, I would just avoid this establishment altogether. But until someone like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos comes along and privatizes the ever-so-antiquated DMV or MVI or whatever the hell Maryland decides to call it, I will just have to bite the bullet like everyone else. But if those in power are reading this -- establishments like this will all be nothing but past-time horror stories in time. The government has allowed policies to become ridiculous, overly-lengthy, and archaic and nobody has to perform above average because you can't get fired in the government! So DMV employees couldn't care in the slightest if they made your day a fraction easier. They're cruising through life at 12 mph with a diet coke in their yeti cup. Someone will come along. I mean I can't give it one star because I did get in and out within an hour. But it was not a fun and enlightening hour. My last trip to a "big-sized" MVA was to the Glen Burnie one (due to a power outage in my area and an about-to-expire drivers licence in my wallet!). That place was breezier, cheerier and the lines moved a heckuva lot faster. I was in and out in 20 minutes there. (Totally different issue, though, cannot accuratley criticize time wait but imagine the drivers license renewal line at G'burg was, if anything, longer than mine that day. Not sure who was paid money to design/furnish this place but perhaps their name was Grim? The place was sterile, but not sanitary, if you know what I mean. I truly, truly, felt like I was in a public waiting area of a prison waiting for an inmate to be brought down from his cell for a visit. (That observation garnered not from actual life experience but from lots of time spend watching television documentaries!) I go to this hellhole to get hard tags for my car that still has temporary tags because of some insurance violation that's on my husband's car. So, I ask the woman at the counter how much the violation is and she goes..."I can't tell you that because you're not on the title." She was no help whatsoever. Told me to go to CCU - went to CCU - wouldn't give me any information because I'm not the person asking about the debt (it's like Sallie Mae asking me for my security questions like someone's going to go in and pay my student loans for me). So I walk out of there like.. "Sh*t, I'm f*cked" Also, this agency won't give you a straight answer about anything. You call them on the phone, they tell you a one thing...you go to the branch, they tell you something totally different. Who's training these people? read more

Went back to have the typo on my name fixed. This time it still took a while, but I succeeded in only one trip! They didn't even charge me for their mistake, although the woman at first suggested I might have misspelled my own name on the form -- um, not. (I had typed the application to avoid any problems with my handwriting. This turned out to be a wise move, since even though they messed up, they couldn't blame me for it) My advice: Be extremely well prepared, carry every kind of ID you have, be prepared to kill 2-4 hours and possibly make several trips. I know I know, everyone needs to go here at some point, but MY GOD this place is terrible. I literally had one of the workers there one time ask me "How can I complicate your day?" which was supposed to be a joke, I know, but this jerk almost failed me for my eye exam because he did not know how to adjust the eye piece so my thick framed glasses could fit inside the viewing area! Its always the wrong temperature inside, you will wait forever no matter what time it is, and there will ALWAYS be at least one incredibly annoying person right behind where you are sitting. Now I will say that the only positive things about my trips to the MVA are the Mexican food trucks outside of the building, Make sure you bring cash to the MVA for those trucks, and make SURE you get to one of those taco trucks they are amazing and cheap. Coming from Florida, the MVA (DMV back in FL) here in MD felt like a dream... as far as attitudes go... on the license side. The front desk lady was very nice with me and was happy to assist me. The lady who helped me process my new license was very nice as well and even carried out a conversation with me with a smile. The manager who came over to double check all the details was extremely welcoming as well. I still have some title, registration crap to take care of at a later date so I figured I would drop by the information desk to double check the current information I have available. As it got closer to my turn I noticed that one of the ladies at the desk had a terrible tone/attitude to some of the people ahead of me. I prayed that she wouldn't assist me... but luck was not on my side today. The moment I got up to the desk I already saw the disgust in her face... I told her my situation and asked if the form was filled out correctly and she simply glanced at it and said yes. Blah blah.. ended up telling her that she is not very helpful and walked away from her. You can't win them all, but my experience on the licensing side went smoothly. Hope I don't see that old hag of a B again the next time I go in to take care of registration, tag, and title. read more

Parking can be a little cutthroat, I was moderately aggressive in asserting my position in line but if it looks busy you may as well head for overflow lot. Some local blue-collar food trucks camp the intersection nearby during lunch hours. A few express kiosks along the walls for standard renewals. Security guard hangs out behind the counter. The staff members are generally civil, with an underlying impatience for anyone who seems to fail at listening to instructions the first go-around. License queues are distributed at the left desk, and all other vehicle inquiries are assigned to queues at the right desk. If you're prepared, queue numbers can be transferred after your first transaction to save you from standing in 4 lines instead of 3. read more

Given the stereotype of a government service facility, the staff at the MVA in Gaitherburg do their best it seems in handling the volume of transactions they get. The place is well lit, with plenty of seating. They lines are long but that's not because people behind the counters are slacking off. A lot of people go to the DMV all year round and many of them don't have all their documents sorted. That adds to the delay. It takes an average of 30 minutes of waiting during peak times after you get a token number. Which way better than any of my visits to any doctor in the area in (ahem) the private sector. At the DMV at least they don't rip off your dignity as they rip off your bandages. Why not five stars? Why the hell don't they have a Starbucks in there?! That would simply be such a cool thing to do. Nobody would notice the wait. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. Extremely inefficient staff! Most frustrating experience I've ever had, and they don't seem to care because it's a service everyone needs! Helpful hint- if they tell you they have not received any of your paperwork for tags etc, don't let it go because they may have just overlooked it which is what happened in my case. They had it for more than three weeks and I kept going back to check they would "look" for it and tell me it had not been received. After tracking with the dealership, it showed it had been received and signed for. They never answered me when I asked twice (in person!) why they had said they didn't have my paperwork. If you read my first review, you will see that I always gave the employees the benefit of the doubt here at the Gaithersburg MVA. It's not their decision to understaff the place, and I've always had a good customer experience once I get up to the counter. In fact, I wondered who those people were that some Yelpers were writing about - the ones that seem to enjoy turning you away or get some sort of pleasure out of it. That is, until my last trip. I had to deal with four people. Two were very kind, and helpful. One was all business, but pleasant enough. But one was just a disgusting person. The ride this woman got from telling me my documents were incomplete and that I'd have to come back couldn't have been more evident. Am I taking away a star just for one person? Yeah. She was ugly inside. Also, this other woman, the manager - sweeter than pie - but she has me standing, waiting at her station to re-enter my call number, while she gives some donk directions to a VA DMV for like 8 minutes. No joke. I guess when the whole process takes half your day, what's another 8 minutes? I also want to know, why did I need to wait an hour - literally - for someone to tell me that my documents were just an utter disappointment to mankind? Why couldn't the lady that gave me my ticket to wait an hour, which took another twenty minutes to get, tell me the same thing? Thanks again, MD, you're horrible. I showed the guy at the information desk my car title and not only did he look at it backwards, he didn't know what it was. Also tons of "employees" who sit around instead of doing their jobs, thus ensuring you will have at least an hour long wait at any time of day, on any day, F this place. read more

This is my second time going to the MVA and still haven't been able to receive a MD tag. Now, I need to return with my marriage license because the title of my car is in my maiden name.... All in all, I had to wait two hours. This place is like a production. The employees are not friendly but that's to be expected. The plus is that there is ample seats and a lot of employees working to help expedite the process. Additionally, there are digital screens that display the number they're on. Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to returning but I don't have a choice as the expiration date on my decal is approaching. read more
