Avoid coming here. I hate hate coming to this MVA. Everytime i come here its an hour or 2 hours wait. Then on top of that if you didnt bring the right papers it would make customers even more mad that they wasted there time and have to come back again. All I can say is that, I never been in a place so unorganized and staff so under trained. I had to go to this MVA to register my car for at least 5 times. Every-time I went there I was tossed to multiple people and in every visit I had a new requirement to satisfy. Worst customer service ever! As a formerr comcast and current verizon customer- that's saying something. I went in to renew and update my license- should be fairly routine right? Oh we'd only think so.... In fact I waited an hour to get a number only to be told I'd have to come back on Monday. Then after cutting me off and talking over me the extremely rude girl behind the counter kept changing the information as if she didn't really know whether she was giving accurate information or not. At one point she actually insinuated that I could drive with an expired license?!? As if she didn't know it's illegal to do so. Then she suggested I wait until the next expiration date- in 5 years- to update my info. As I'm sure it's acceptable and according to that girl encouraged to have inaccurate state issued identification. Unfortunately all residents of Maryland are stuck with this institution so they see no need to employee knowledgeable and courteous employees.... read more

I've heard horror stories about this DMV on weekends, but I went on a Wednesday morning as soon as they opened and although I still had to wait, the experience wasn't as painstaking as I thought it would be. I arrived just before 8am (a half hour before they opened) and there was already a line of about 20 people in front of me. **There are 2 separate entry lines for vehicle-related visits and license related ones, so make sure you are on the right line!** First I waited on line to get a number (which took about 10 mins,) then I waited for my number to be called for about an hour. I went for title and registration, which I think takes a bit longer than some other issues. The person I spoke to was helpful and did what she had to do as quickly as possible once I was called; the longest part was waiting for my number to be called. Not the best experience ever, but then again, is the DMV ever a good experience?? Definitely go on a day that you CAN afford to wait! Otherwise you'll probably just waste a lot of time and leave extremely aggravated while getting nothing done. This DMV is also open on Saturdays, but only for license-related issues, and I've heard horror stories about the lines, so if you go on a Saturday plan to arrive about an hour before opening! read more

Have to say that I never thought I would be writing a 5-star review for this large MVA office, but credit earned is credit due! I lost my D/L over the weekend, and wasn't looking forward to what I though certain would be "drill" of some significant moment to replace same....and, after further noting comments about Maryland's laborious efforts to emplace a TSA-compliant D/L, could only anticipate the pain factor, yet to come. The facility's website (...and door signs) indicate a 0830 office opening. I arrived at 0745 to get a fighting chance at not having to lunch, there. Maybe 20 folks in front of me, outside, everyone behaving. C. 0800, an MVA employee came outside and started selecting folks, a couple at a time, to re-enter the bldg with her. This repeated a few times, and at 0815, she opened the door to the masses, greeted everyone as they entered and directed them to the central info desk. Received my queuing slip in about 3 minutes, and as I exited the info desk line, their automated system was "calling" my customer number! To the counter I proceeded and engaged with the second MVA employee, Abdul. Some questions, some computer screen prompts, a signature and $20.00 later (plus $15.50 for overnight mail --- NOT mentioned on the MVA website, btw...but a most-favored option!), I was out the door with a temp license and a smile on my face. Everyone was friendly, professional and full responsive. Don't know if it was the lunar cycle or the Gaithersburg MVA drinking water, but it simply could NOT have been easier! Greatly depends on clerk. First one that I encountered made me go through hell trying to get a title and didn't give me one although I had all the docs. Second one was super friendly and knowledgeable of what to do. read more

Everyone at the MVA was infinitely patient with my bizarre situation of records/going out of the country/trying to land a license at the age of 28. Even though I did get bounced around from counter to counter, every single person was trying to help and doing their best. Some even went beyond the call of duty: -the examiner-in-charge who helped me navigate the MVA hierarchy... over... and over... and over... while expidiating the line at the same time! -the law test guy who understood my dilemma and made the appropriate calls to get me in the right situation -to the driving instructor who was firm but fair, and funny (i could actually focus on driving instead of feeling like they were out to fail me!) -to the supervisor who told me EXACTLY what to do and personally made sure I walked out with a license after the endless tests and phone calls. Seriously, I'm almost GLAD that MVAs have such bad reputations- I walked in with low expectations and was blown by how passionate everyone was about their job: helping confused people like me become a safe, certified driver. Nice facility with sign that try to direct traffic but a little convoluted if you ask me. The number system is a great idea except no matter what time of day you go it's always a 1.5hr wait at a minimum regardless of your need. The employees are disgruntled, rude, short, and take their sweet a** time. There should be more express office around the city to help reduce traffic and to help people that just have quick things to do. The only quick service is EZpass registration or transfer. Never really a line and the employees are helpful and happy. read more

My most frustrating experience at a DMV. Two stars because I technically got done what I came there to do, but the process as a whole was terrible. I needed a supervisor to look over documents from a name change, which is completely understandable, but I was then returned to the BACK of the very long line TWICE in order to finally be seen and processed. From start to finish, it took a little over 3 hours! Overall, I think that the listening, communication, and empathy from the employees that work there needs great improvement. Layout is extremely confusing, you stand in line for 30 minutes just to get a number to wait in another line, all the while you witness a staffer dressed like he just got finished with masonry work berate each person that approaches him with a question, as if they were supposed to be well studied in DMV knowledge. This place is always very busy but the service is good. Go in on a less busy day like the weekday early in the morning to avoid the long wait. The keep a consistent flow and someone is always ready to help you. You can easily ask anyone for help unlike some MVA places they will tell you "Wait in line!" Checked that I had the right documents on the website but couldn't find the "Make an Appointment" button. It's on there somewhere because it made my last appointment ridiculously easy. Anyway, the wait times online were reading between 0 and the 10 minutes so I decided to take a chance on it anyway. 2.5 hours later, I'm still here waiting. The Vehicle Services desk kept the line moving at a reasonable rate, but the counters are insufficiently staffed to move people through. Had to circle the lot several times for parking before driving a little way down the road for street parking. Wish there were more locations with the ability to do out-of-state vehicle registration. read more

So need to renew my DL, haven't done it in 5 years. Stand in line at the desk for 30 minutes. The whole time, there are two MVA staff working the line who's only function appears to be to find the folks who only speak Spanish and provide them concierge level service as they walk them around to where they need to go. This happened 18 times while I was in line. So I finally speak to someone and they do a quick eye test and say I need to go use the kiosks in the corner. So I go over there and start but apparently there is no way to get a new picture. I've lost a considerable amount of weight and not longer resemble my picture. Did the lady who directed me to the kiosk mention anything about that? Nope. Did I know enough about the 'new' process to know that I needed to ask? Nope. Last time I renewed they took a picture. So back in that line to get a number.... It is now an hour since I got that number and I'm still waiting. Why is it that we have to become experts at EVERY process to keep from having our time wasted. read more

Gaithersburg MVA is the worst place on earth. Workers have IQ of paramecium. Simple transactions take hours to perform. Everyone is standing around looking angry and frustrated at the long wait times and confusing bureaucratic system. This place is straight out of Franz Kafka's The Trial. Believe it or not, I found this MVA branch to be friendly, helpful, and efficient. They have a great processing system and were amazingly supportive in assisting me -- as a person dependent on a wheelchair and with mobility needs. I watched them smile at customers and generally be nifty folks -- who unfortunately get a bad stereotype rap for being MVA employees. Place is also clean and food trucks parked outside. read more

It's unfortunate that management does not care about promoting excellent customer service in this location. I've talked to three different employees, and they all give me horrible attitude. I asked just a few questions and they would snap back at me as if I'm deaf. They only care about employing people who complete tasks at minimum. I came to this location to renew my drivers license. After waiting for twenty minutes in line I received a number to wait again in another section for ten minutes. After my number was called I gave all my information and the attendant submitted my information and the system went down. I then had to wait again for over twenty minutes. I was in this establishment for over two hours, just to renew my license. I spoke with seven different people before I was able to have my license renewed. They were all polite, but that doesn't make up for the incompetency to complete the job. Very disappointing...... read more

I don't know about any other MVA offices but Gaithersburg office is not a good place to get ur work done. I have been to this place again and again for my MD driver's license. My experience with the staff was not gud because I was asked to get back with some extra documents which they did not mention when I called them up. But I am okay with that since I don't expect government employees to work any better. I passed my computer based test at my first attempt, but that wasn't the easiest part. I failed the skilled test for the first time because I could not parallel park properly (at least that's what the instructor said). I made a mistake by taking a manual car to the test for the second time for which I don't blame the instructor (he actually tried to help me). My worst experience was my third attempt where the instructor (Rude guy - don't wanna mention his name) tells me that I have to look for traffic even on the closed circuit where we perform the parallel parking and the T- back-up. He tells me to look in all the three mirrors and the blind spots for each and every turn, stop, parallel parking, T-backup and what not. My final run was smooth not because the instructor was kind or something, its just that I know what to do at a driving test and I PASSED. The reasons for poor rating are: 1. Rude staff (not all but some ppl) 2. Long wait times 4. The ask for extra documents (most of the times) 3. Mainly because I din't like it ... :) read more

New to Maryland so I was dreading the whole car switch over process. After calling the automated number, I got the list of things I needed to be able to get my MD plate/tags/registration. I felt a little overwhelmed, but got it all done and was ready for my trip to a full service DMV. I couldn't figure out how to make an appointment online for what I needed to do, so I decided my best bet was to show up before open and just take my chances and get it done. I went on July 3rd, just to add to the stress. Lol I showed up around 7:30am thinking I'd be the first at the door... nope. Two sets of doors and it seemed no one knew the right one to go to, so I just stuck to one. Of course, 8:20 rolls around and an employee pops their head out of the door to say to form one line at the other door. Whatever, people were nice enough to let us go somewhat upfront. 8:30am hits and it's a race to the check in line. Only waited maybe 5 mins, got my ticket and sat for my number to be called. I think I waited 20 mins and I was up. The worker was not conversational, but friendly. I had all my things organized and had everything I needed, so it made for an easy process. Was out of there at 9am with plate and tags in hand! My new MD title came two weeks later. Wasn't as scary as I thought! Only marking one star down because there wasn't a clear sign outside saying what door to go to. read more

When i first took my driver license i had this very rude lady she was african and she had an attitude when i was asking her questions overall i had a bad experience with her and she made me feel nervous and she failed me . I asked people ahead of me who took her did she give them attitude as well, they all agreed.The second time i took it , i had this African American man antwan (sorry if i spelled it wrong ) but he was awesome he made me feel comfortable didn't have an attitude at all and gave me useful tips for the future thank you ! This MVA has the rudest staff I had ever met. When you walk into the MVA/DMV, of course I don't expect them to greet you happily with a smile (who are we kidding here?), but I'm convinced that they take pride in being rude to customers. This one lady, who was supposedly a supervisor, had the worst case of b****face ever, but because I don't like judging books by their covers, I gave her the benefit of the doubt. WRONG! Her personality and work ethics are the blown up version of her face. She spoke to me in that ultra annoying "I don't give a dog's doodoo about you" monotone, and I'm pretty sure she had to keep reciting Bible verses in her head to gather enough restraint not to roll her eyes too obviously at me. And when she decided she was done talking to me, she turned her head away to start talking to her coworkers. HELLO? I'M STILL HERE!? Anyway, I had to pay $20 for a duplicate car title because I never received it in my mail, and there's nothing the MVA can do about it. What an awful place! I don't usually cry in public places, but this place caused me to--not once, but TWICE! I had to end up going here 3 times to get all of my stuff transferred from Virginia to Maryland...this was even after I went on the website, printed out requirements, highlighted and took notes on what I needed to bring with me! Apparently they change their requirements daily and do not update the website?! One woman even turned away my utility bill because it had "Gwen" on there and not my full legal first name of "Gwendolyn." ??? I then proceeded to go get my registration with the same document, which was accepted. And having my car's registration served as another legal document, so I was finally able to get my license after first getting my registration. Make sense? Yeah, I didn't think so... Oh, and their Saturday hours are for licenses only. So you will waste leave from work if you have to get a new registration (I believe you can mail a form in to renew). read more

This MVA is the worst. Ten minutes before five o'clock 3/4 of the counter staff stopped working. They started conversing among themselves and milling around although there were waiting customers.
