I love the food and service. People are nice. The prices suck but worth it! Food doesn't take long at all

1 STAR -- Raw oysters should NEVER be handled this way…read more The most disturbing part of our experience at Chesapeake Seafood House was watching our waitress attempt to re-serve raw oysters to us after they had already been sitting on another customer's table for 10-15 minutes. My parents and I were the first customers in the restaurant, arriving at 3:30 PM. We ordered raw oysters, escargot, and soup. Our waitress mistakenly delivered our appetizers to a table two tables away, where they sat for 10-15 minutes before she realized her mistake. She then picked up those same oysters and started bringing them back to our table. I had to stop her and say, "You are not putting those on our table after they've been on someone else's table." The fact that she was prepared to serve us raw shellfish that had already been sitting at another customer's table is completely unacceptable. I should not have to explain basic food-safety concerns to a restaurant employee. And somehow, the next solution was to walk around the restaurant asking other tables, "Does anybody want these oysters?" This was her way of shaming us when it was actually her mistake entirely! When you put food down on someone's table it is THEIRS! She needs food handler's safety training and customer service training. I have never witnessed anything like it. Maybe write down your orders and you won't forget what table you're ordering things for! Sorry you're 50 + years old and don't know proper food safety rules and dining etiquette! Learn it or get fired! She also forgot my soup. Mistakes happen. But this wasn't simply a wrong-table mistake--it was a serious lapse in judgment involving raw seafood and food safety. What if I hadn't noticed? What if another customer had eaten those oysters without knowing where they had been? We came in for dinner with my parents and left genuinely disturbed by what we witnessed. Raw oysters are not something you pass from table to table until someone agrees to eat them. Absolutely unacceptable. I will never return.

With all of the adjustments to everyday life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, discovering that I…read morecan get sustainably-caught, small-boat harvested, wild Alaskan seafood shipped to my doorstep via this audacious little company in Galesburg, IL is probably the most positive one. Prior to last spring, you would not have been able to convince me that it made sense to spend $120-$130 a month to have 4.5 pounds of seafood shipped to me, but when our standard supply chain broke down and it was nearly impossible to get proteins at the grocery store I started to look for other options. I love seafood, so that is what I looked for first, trying a couple of "fresh from ... (name your place)" options. I dipped my toe into the Sitka Salmon Shares world by buying a "bounty sale" box of sablefish, also known as black cod. I did a side-by-side comparison of the SSS sablefish and another Alaskan seafood company that ships throughout the US and the difference in quality was astounding. I signed up for SSS's premium seafood subscription shortly thereafter. SSS is a different kind of company - a "Community Supported Fishery" akin to the CSA's you might be familiar with from your local farmer's market. While they project the contents of each monthly box ahead of time, the mix of what you receive depends upon the harvest. No matter what type of seafood you receive, you can expect impeccable quality, as the CSF model allows the small boat fishermen-owners and trusted partners to handle their catch in an artisanal way -- eg, line caught, immediately bled and put on ice, processed and deep frozen for shipment. All fish is sushi-grade, and in most cases you get traceability back to the boat that caught it and the date of harvest. Does all of that matter? I maintain that it does ... for example I have never received a piece of fish from SSS that was bruised from rough handling, and that does indeed make a difference in taste and texture. If you are a fan of seafood check out their "Freezer Sale" -- right now I believe they have a salmon sampler and albacore tuna available. I bet that if you do give a freezer sale box a try, you will soon find yourself poring over their subscriptions trying to decide which one to pick. If it's not the best fish you've ever had? They have fabulous customer service, contact them and surely they will do right by you. As for me? I expect I will be a subscriber for life.
