Justin, one of the owner's of RC Energy Solutions was our point of contact from the initial estimate all the way through to completion of the solar panels actually getting turned on. From the minute we met Justin, we felt very comfortable working with him. Justin's expertise in the industry was apparent during our estimate and he immediately struck us as being straight forward and genuine. No gimmicks, no upsells. Justin is very easy going, easy to work with, and was especially accommodating (for super type A clients like myself). We always prefer to support local and small businesses, like RC Energy Solutions, and we couldn't be happier that we did in this situation. There is certainly something to be said about the owner of a small business coming out and doing the estimates himself and being your main point of contact throughout the entire job. No sales guy, no project manager (which would have been fine too), but the actual OWNER. Our roof replacement got off to a little bit of a rocky start considering that we had newly discovered water leaks during the height of rain season and were very concerned about them getting worse while waiting for our project to start. Justin was quick to address our concerns though and got on the roof and tarped it himself the same day that we went under contract. Not even a couple days later we were calling Justin again because strong winds had blown the tarp all out of place and one of the leaks looked like it may have gotten worse as a result. Again, Justin came out as soon as he could that same day and readjusted/secured the tarp. It was this kind of urgency and accommodation from Justin that certainly made us feel like valued clients from the get go. Every time we called/texted Justin with a question or concern throughout our project entirety, he always responded that same day and in a very timely manner, which was greatly appreciated. In addition to Justin, his business partner and labor crew were all wonderful to work with as well. The labor crew was respectful of our property at all times, accommodating of our toddler daughter's oh so precious naptime the 2 days that she wasn't at daycare, and they were all extremely hardworking and skilled in their trade. These are the many reasons we have no regrets hiring RC Energy Solutions for this costly and at the time very unexpected project. Our project timeline: January 15 2021 we went under contract with RC Energy Solutions March 19 2021 roof placement started March 26 2021 roof replacement completed March 29 2021 solar install started March 30 2021 solar install completed and solar permitted April 20 2021 solar application finally approved by SDGE/NEM and turned on A couple other general things I wanted to share for other Yelpers to be aware of, especially if it's your first time replacing your entire roof and first time getting solar installed/turned on, as it was ours: - We met with about 6 companies total. They all offered very similar products/services because replacing a roof is a fairly straightforward process without much opportunity for variation. While there are a few more options with solar as far as panels, inverters, etc., it is still a pretty straightforward process without much variation. These factors made it very easy, throughout the estimate process, to figure out which companies were trying to upsell products/prices where they could. So do your homework and you will recognize why RC Energy Solutions is truly the best company to hire for both roof replacement and solar install. - While we were warned that we were likely going to need a pretty moderate amount of wood replacement, as part of getting our new roof, we really had no idea exactly how much wood was going to need to be replaced. As a result, we ended up coming out of pocket $5,000 more than we had really anticipated. So that part was definitely a bummer. While we understand that no company could estimate exactly how much wood needed to be replaced without taking off the existing roof first, it would have been helpful to have been given a ballpark estimate for the potential cost of wood replacement. For example, wood replacement estimate: low end $3,000 and high end $10,000. Especially if you're taking out a loan to finance your project, obviously the difference of a few grand really matters. - If you suddenly realize that you need a new roof like um yesterday AND it's during the height of rain season, then just be prepared to sit back and wait nervously with a tarped roof. Due to the nature of the business, roof/solar install is just not a speedy process. We were told anywhere from 2-4 months from the day we went under contract as estimated start dates from most companies. RC Energy Solutions told us about 6 weeks out for an initial start date, but due to being right in the middle of rain season, our project as well as others before ours were understandably delayed as a result. I am so grateful to have found this company! If you are looking for someone with integrity and amazing customer service, this is it! During the rainy season we discovered that we had leaks in our roof. We had someone come out and attempt to fix them but when it rained again a few days later they were still leaking and the repairman felt it might be coming from an area by our solar panels. In order to fix it the solar panels would need to be removed and reinstalled after the repairs. After making calls to several companies I discoverd that no one wanted to touch a solar system they had not installed. Unfortunately the company that installed the system (that was on our home when we bought it) is no longer in business. I was given Justin's name by the repairman who said I should call him because he might be able to help. From the minute I contacted Justin he was so helpful. It was discovered that we needed a new roof. He was willing to remove the solar panels, install the new roof and reinstall the system. Since it was still raining he came out and placed tarps on the roof until it was possible to actually do the work. When the work was done it was completed in a timely manner, the crew was always on time and was very good at making sure to keep everything cleaned up when they left each day. After the solar was reinstalled I discovered that the system was not reporting the per panel monitoring properly. When I contacted Justin he came over the next day. He had to call the Enphase Company and see if they could help diagnose the issue. He spent hours on a few different days to finally get the problem solved for us. It had been installed incorrectly when the system was originally installed years before. I cannot say enough good things about Justin. He went way ABOVE and BEYOND anything I could have expected. RC Energy did new windows/doors and roof/solar work LAST YEAR in the fall. I'm just getting around to writing a review because we had a wedding to plan, a COVID to avoid, and all the crazy of life has gotten in the way. We chose to work with Justin and RC after reading the excellent reviews. We finally decided to do solar in October, and were able to get on the schedule to have our work completed by the end of the year to qualify for the solar rebate. We ultimately decided to replace our old single pane sliders and windows and add solatube lighting in addition to a solar project. Justin recommended that we have our home re-roofed in conjunction with the solar installation as our home is over 30 years old, and had never been re-roofed. So two parts - the doors and windows were installed in ONE day by an awesome crew of these really good-natured and friendly guys. There was an accident where two of our floor tiles were cracked as a result of the install, and they very promptly scheduled to complete the repairs - you can't even tell it happened. The noise reduction and difference in temperature was immediately noticeable. For the roof/solar install - this was an epic battle for the ages.... in between rain storms, my scheduled knee surgery, and a roof that was in far worse condition than we anticipated - I honestly don't have many memories of that time because I was on the good stuff recovering from ACL surgery - but I know that Justin and his crew hustled hard, and had great attention to detail in clean up, wall patching, etc. Even going so far as to make sure the decora plate on the exhaust fans matched our existing. They were definitely in a scheduling crisis trying to finish projects before Christmas/year end, so I know the rain didn't help! We were able to get our solar permitted by year end, and we've had no issues with any of the work since installation. Overall - great experience and we are very happy with the work. The only complaint I have is that we were a little unclear on the additional roofing repair costs, and wound up having to do a second batch of financing for that. But it was just annoying, not worth taking a star off for. read more

Although he did not end up getting my contract, I was very pleased with his offerings, and his extremely competitive pricing. Out of nine companies I got quotes from, I would say Justin was #2 and nearly tied with my #1. I also appreciated how he did NOT upsell me or pressure me to make a decision within a short time frame. I ended up not deciding to redo my roof, but if I had, I would have picked Justin because his pricing for the roof portion was by far the most competitive and included the most bang for the buck. His solar panel designs also reflected his knowledge in local code, as some other bids were too conservative in their roof setbacks and panel locations. He also offers a wide range of panel types for different system requirements. We finished a big project with Justin from RC Energy in Spring 2021 and the entire business experience was stellar! Our single family home in Carlsbad was in need of a new roof and we decided it was time to get modern with solar and some window & door replacements. Through our bidding process, RC Energy came out the lowest and Justin was cordial and honest about the entire process and costs upfront. We knew this was going to be a big project and Justin explained the entire process. Our work included: full re-roof (tear-off, new underlayment, new concrete tiles, wood repair, full fascia board replacement & painting, 18 PV solar panel array + electrical/RMA, new sliding glass door, three kitchen windows and two new solar-powered skylights in our living room. There was a big chunk of extra cost for roof wood repairs we knew was coming (dry rot and previous termite damage to sheathing & rafter tails) but the costs were understandable given the hours of extra labor, and the quality of carpentry work spearheaded by Ivan was exceptional. Nice windows and doors from Amerimax combined with the new roof tiles and fascia has really given our home a modernized curb appeal and the new skylights have changed the entire feel of our dark living room. Solar went live in May/June and boy is it nice to see our bills reduced next to nothing, especially with our EV charging and AC unit. I can't say enough about how happy I was with RC Energy Solutions! I had a leak in my roof after a very heavy rainfall. I reached out to a number of companies on Yelp. Most replied asking for my information, but RC set up an appointment for the next day. He showed up on time and did a full inspection of the area where the leak was. This included removing and re-installing the solar panels that they had previously installed years ago with a previous home-owner. We received multiple quotes prior to going with RC and their prices were competitive. Scheduling was predictable and accurate - as was the estimated time of completion for the project. We had some challenges re-roofing our very old home that resulted in a some "uh-oh" moments once RC removed the existing roof. The previous owners had mickey-moused the roof job previously and it needed to be redone the correct way. This resulted in a re-quote of the job for additional work; Justin was transparent throughout and made sure we understood the process and what was happening. We appreciated his team keeping their workspace clean and organized at the end of each day. At the time, we chose not to replace our existing chimney cap that was noted to have some issues during our home inspection. However, with the recent rain we noticed water damage in our ceiling. Since my first review we sold our home and purchased another home 11 miles away. Of course we were spoiled with our incredible energy efficient former home we had to call Justin and his team again. Yes, we are two time solar buyers with RC and I have to share that the experience the 2nd time around was just as incredible as the first. Justin came out to inspect our new, larger home to give us a quote. We needed not one but 2 air conditioners, a new furnace and of course we wanted a solar system that completely made our SDGE zero. BUT, I wanted my net payment for everything to be the same as my SDGE bill....he did it again! The job was much larger but I had the same smooth experience. Dan his project manager was outstanding with communication and I was never once inconvenienced. Every contractor should take lessons from these guys! To take it above and beyond, this week our neighborhood had a power outage which fried our new water heater that RC installed a year ago with the solar system. I text Justin and within minutes we had his great team to support our challenge and he helped us get everything back on track. Who does that?? We are talking about a full year after my job is paid and complete, they still jump when I text and care about our discomfort. About a month ago Justin had Chase replaced the non functioning Solaredge inverter for the fourth time. Justins Electrical Engineer, Chase informed me that Solaredge has constant problems and that the only solution is to install the system from the other manufacturer that Justin and Chase installed on my prior home, which worked well. In May Chase replaced the defective wire after a Solaredge tech came out and supervised the repairs.............and the system works. read more

We used RC Energy to install solar panels 3 months ago. Justin was very professional, and responsive to multiple emails and phone calls. We interviewed 4 companies, and chose RC Energy for the following reasons: 1) Best financing package (18 month 0 down, 0 interest loan, and a 12 year 2.9% loan with no origination fee or prepayment penalty; 2) Provided best system for our disjointed roof (microinverter) while other larger companies tried to push Sunpower panels with 1 or 2 central inverters, and I believe they had incentives to push Sunpower; 3) Diversified company that should stay in business if the solar panel industry takes a downturn after the federal rebates end/reduced in 2016, or net metering rates change later this year; and 4) Provided 20 year warranty on both parts and labor. I liked that they were a small, local company in San Diego. They appreciate their customers, and even returned to paint the metal cylinder containing the cables the same color as our house per our HOA requirements. I can tell you the house next to ours did not get that service from one of the larger solar companies. RC also completed the job ahead of schedule. Solar panels are a big investment, so I would caution everyone to do their due diligence. RC Energy was the one company that met all of our criteria in designing the best system for our roof, providing good pricing, great financing, and a great warranty. My original review was delegated to the section of "not trusted" even though it had several positive reviews from others. It contained a lot of information that is important when trying to decide on solar companies. I just had RC do my roof on my rental and was very pleased with the work. I chose them because they had done a great job on my home installing the solar and insulation. Here is my original review: In the summer of 2015 we wanted to do a re-roof on our two-story, 2400 ft. home, and then purchase solar. I had been talking to many companies and even attended the free seminar put out by SDGE. I initially signed with Pacific Home Remodeling as they are approved by the PACE lenders, YGrene. However, I read reviews of Pacific and was not impressed. I used the 72 cancellation clause and canceled my contract. They did try to win me back with a substantially lower bid, but I had already spoken to RC Energy Solutions and was impressed with the reviews I had read online. RC was also approved by Ygrene although we eventually decided to use our Equity Line of Credit. Justin and I renegotiated some items before the 72 hours ran out (Originally I was supposed to pay for any plywood replacement on the roof, but I negotiated that into the bid.) Where Pacific had bid out a whole new roof, RC suggested saving my original tile (which was still in good shape) and doing a re-roof using it with some new tiles being used where there weren't enough original tiles to complete the roof. It was substantially less, so we decided to do that. Included in my bid were 18 solar panels, re-roof using my tiles, new insulation in my attic, and a new solar tube-approx $33,000. They did come back and ask for additional money for some wood replacement and I paid the $1,200 to do it. I was amazed at the workers. They showed up in the hottest weather of the year--consistently 98 degrees and probably much more on top of the roof. They worked non-stop, cleaned up afterward, and were very amiable. Dan and Shaun, the persons who will set up the solar account and show you how to monitor your solar output, were kind and professional. The longest part of the process was waiting six weeks for them to begin because they had numerous projects before me. Otherwise, the re-roof, insulation and solar installation took about ten days altogether. I liked working with RC. Four years later and the system is working fine, the roof looks great. PACE LENDING-- 1. Make sure you know how much they charge in interest and how much the roof/system will cost after fees, interest, and the contract price. I know YGrene charges somewhere around 8% interest, which makes the solar system substantially more expensive in the end. 2. Find out if you can pay the loan off early without penalty. YGrene allows you to pay off early, but you have to pay the WHOLE amount off early. That means you can't just put a few hundred extra on each month to pay it off quicker. 3. Read up on the problems of trying to sell your home with a PACE loan. Because the loan is charged as a Mello Roos, the loan stays attached to the house when you sell it (that means the buyer has to continue to pay off the loan.) Because the PACE lender is charging it as a tax, they get first dibs on any money if someone forecloses or there is a short sale. LENDERS do not like to be second in line to receive their money so many will not lend on a house that has a PACE loan. So re-financing or selling can sometimes be more difficult for a homeowner. I suggest checking with RC. Some other reviewers financed through RC Energy and it looks like they got a good deal. Make sure you weigh the above against owning a solar system. In many cases, especially those with pools, electric cars, etc. it makes financial sense to install solar. But do the math before you jump in...we were able to take advantage of the Tax rebate which was recently extended several years. Check with SDGE on how much you will receive for each kWh you produce. You still have to pay a monthly fee to rent their equipment to transfer your energy to them, but make sure they're paying you a decent amount for your energy. I doubt you'll get 100% return on your solar when you sell your house..not only because the panels will have less life, but because most people don't know their worth, and, although they want solar but don't want to pay for it. read more

I made a ton of calls when I found out that I had a roof problem, and Justin with RC Energy Solutions, was the only one that took the time to hear me out and to explain what steps could be taken to fix the problems.
