San Diego residents pay a high rate for electricity. In the past few years, SDG&E, has reduced the number of its tiers and increased its kWh rates per tier. In an effort to offset the increased prices, the wife and I purchased new energy-saving bulbs, reduced the number of bulbs turned ON in the house, and limited use of central heating/cooling. Regardless of our efforts, the normal monthly utility bill had risen from $25-$50 to $150-$200. So we began researching the positives and negatives of installing solar. Many companies in the San Diego area were pushing "no up-front costs" and leasing was being touted as the solution to the rising utility prices. Our neighbors believed leasing was the way to go and jumped on the band wagon. After reading several proposals from solar companies, we decided leasing was not the way to go and purchasing solar was too expensive. Two years later as costs continued to rise, wife and I began to again research benefits of solar. Met with several solar representatives and one of them, the owner & president of SunVantage, Inc., stood out from the rest. After asking him several questions (which we already knew the answers to), the owner, demonstrated his knowledge and honesty as he responded to our inquiries. No B.S. answers, so we asked him for a proposal. His proposal compared the costs of leasing versus purchasing the panels. The numbers in his proposal made sense to me (a former bank executive). 1. The cost of purchasing was reasonable. A credit union in Washington State was handling the financing (30/70 solar loan program) in which loan payments were deferred for one year with no interest. 2. We would receive a 30 percent credit from the Federal government for purchasing and installing the panels. 3. Our accountant confirmed that based upon our income tax rate, we would not have to pay quarterly taxes for 3.5 years if the solar panels were purchased. 4. SDG&E's net energy metering program would "true up" in 2019. Therefore, no monthly billing from SDG&E from June 5, 2018 to June 5, 2019. We bought our solar system from SunVantage. We were initally leaning toward leasing a system. We met with Brandon and he explained the benefits of buying vs leasing. Because of the tax incentives, we came to the conclusion that buying is a much better deal. We felt no pressure from SunVantage while gathering other bids and deciding which company to use. After signing the contract, the SunVantage team was out immediately to start installing the system. Other companies told us it would be months before they would be able to start the installation. Brandon, the owner of Sunvantage, is exceptionally knowledgeable about everything pertaining to solar. From panel types to batteries, he is forthcoming with solar information. We trust him completely and his crew did an excellent job. His rates are reasonable and he offers financing. We got our own loan, but his rates were pretty good.
