My son is ruff on glasses, so I purchased the insurance that covers damaged glasses that cannot be repaired. Sure enough he comes home with bent up glasses. I was concerned that Ashburn Eyecare might try to fix them up enough to not have to use the insurance, but the quality would suffer. However, I am happy to say that Justin took the time to listen to my concerns and had us set up with a replacement pair asap. If I ever have an issue in the future, I will be asking for Justin. read more

My Appointment was with Dr. Jennifer Sun, before leaving she wrote me a prescription for eye drops for dry eyes. I attempted to get the prescription filled on 2/9/2018 today's date is 3/5/2018 I still do not have the eye drops. Initially I thought there was an issue with my health insurance. However, after 2 1/2 hours on the phone 2 1/2 weeks ago I learned the problem is the doctors office. They failed to properly fill out the required paper work, they were contacted by the insurance company and the pharmacy several times to no avail. I contacted the the doctors office several times only to be told by Tiffany the doctor is not in and neither is my file. today the insurance company has stated they are at their wits in they have spoken with the office manager and they too have not made any progress. If the doctors office fails to answer all required questions the insurance co. cannot process the prescription request therefore the prescription cannot be filled. Dr. Jennifer Sun's lack of response if reckless at best, she wrote the prescription and clearly does not stand behind it. I went to the office located in Chantilly. DO NOT SEE DR. I drive over an hour to AEA! Dr. Allen really takes great care of my crazy eyes. Always letting me know about the newest contacts to make sure I am always comfortable and loving my lenses. The staff is wonderful, helpful and very knowledgeable. read more

The front desk is HORRIBLE. I have been going here for a couple years now and until late this year it was great. I never had a problem, granted there were long waits even if you had an appointment but they are a very busy office. The front desk was always efficient and you could call them and they were very helpful. Well helpful until this year. Their glasses are considerably more than other places so I went to another store to buy them. When they called down there for a prescription they were less than friendly giving that out, they refused to. I was told by the person in the store that they would not give it. I had my doubts, I was 3 way'd in and I could not believe they were being like this. I called them directly after that and they told me for HIPA reasons they couldn't do it. I asked why it wasn't an issue with 2 prescriptions earlier in the year for contact lenses they said they never did that. Again, completely awful...I definitely will never be using these people again. read more

Visited Ashburn Eyecare this month and really had a great experience! Saw Dr Patil (spelling?) and she was very knowledgeable and explained everything she was doing. I didn't have to wait long to see anyone. Then I met with Megan Thevenot to search for glasses and to get fitted. She was GREAT in all ways! She could look at the shape of my face and could find glasses that would fit me specifically. She knew which frames to stay away from. It was a really fun experience and they are lucky to have Megan working there. She is fun but professional and extremely knowledgeable about glasses, frames, insurance, billing and more. I got my glasses and love love love them! My husband had an appt a few weeks after mine and also had a great experience with no issues. Great experience today! Took my son to see Dr. Slavin. I called this morning and got an appointment same day! Which was great after my two boys were messing around and broke my oldest sons glasses last night. Almost no wait time. They fixed his current pair of glasses while he had his exam. I was recommended to see Dr. Allen by a friend of mind when I explained to her I needed an eye doctor since I'm new to the area. She told me that Dr. Allen has been her family's optometrist for many years and she would never think twice about seeing another doctor, I understand why. When I arrived at the office I was warmly greeted by the girls at the front desk. Diana was the name of the technician who preformed the pre-appointment testing, she was very sweet and explained to me what she was doing during every step. When she was done, she escorted me to a back waiting area. It was not long before Dr. Allen came out the introduce himself. He was very thorough during my exam and answered all of my questions in great detail. I did not feel rushed and truly appreciated the time he spent with me. He patiently listened to me when I explained my history of dry eyes and contact lenses. He explained how important it was to have a good pair of glasses, even though I mostly wear contacts. After my appointment Dr. Allen walked me over to the eyeglass side of the office and introduced to me to his optician, Melissa. Melissa showed me around and helped me choose from a large selection of frames. She was very patient with me as she helped me pick out a new pair of glasses (I haven't bought a new pair in years). She was very knowledgeable about the products they carry and was able to find the perfect pair of frames that she says brings out the blue in my eyes. Melissa was able to thoroughly explain my insurance plan to me and was able to quickly price out my order. When I noticed how much I saved with my VSP insurance I was able to order a second pair, sunglasses to wear with my contacts. Melissa then walked me up to the front desk to check out and handed me her and Dr. Allen's business cards. Again, the girls at the front dest were very nice and quick to check me out. Dr. Allen recommended me to switch to a different brand of contact lenses. I've tried them now for the past two weeks and couldn't be happier, they are the first truly comfortable contacts I have ever worn! I had my follow up appointment yesterday for Dr. Allen to check my new contacts. After my appointment I picked up my glasses from Melissa. She took the time to make sure the frames were fitted well and welcomed me back anytime for fittings. I will be certain to come back next year and have already told my friends about Ashburn Eyecare Associates. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Slavin for more years than I can remember. They have also have an office in Chantilly and that's where I typically go. She is personable and knowledable and takes time with each of her patients as if they are the only one there all day. You never feel rushed. It's not just about your prescription - to Dr. Slavin it's about your personal health and your eye health and your comfort with your visoin - it's the total package that's her concern. read more

I've really enjoyed being a patient at AEA. I've never had to wait on hold for extended periods of time, or have had to wait weeks for appointments. The front desk is always friendly, and the optometrists are always knowledgeable. My only problem with the office is that once you are sent back, in between eye tests and drops, they have you wait out again in the waiting room while they see another patient in the few minutes between tests. I understand it speeds up the process, but having to go from the office into the waiting room then back to the office between every test is a pain. With that being said, however, the appointments do go by rather quickly, so the shuffling about could be the trick. read more

I have seen four of the doctors here in the last 4-5 months. I have liked all of the doctors and find them very knowledgeable and helpful. However, the communication between doctors, front office and back office (where glasses and contacts arrive) is awful! I have had to call both times to find out if contacts/glasses are in. The one time they called me to tell me they were in, it turned out that only the right eye of contacts was in, but not the left. Also when she called to tell me they were in and that I needed to make an appointment, she transferred me (at 6pm) and no one answered so I had to leave a message. Then no one called me in two days, so I had to call them to make the appointment. When I go in for my appointment, the front desk doesn't know exactly what kind of an appointment I am supposed to have. It's very frustrating and unfortunately I will have to find a new optometrist. read more

I can't comment on the quality of service because we weren't able to see the doctor. It was my husband's first time at the office. We had trouble finding the office and walked in 20 minutes late. The front desk had already cancelled. (That would have been fine, our bad, but they weren't even apologetic about canceling.) I have finally made the switch to another eye doctor without looking back. This practice lacks bedside manner, refuses to do the right thing by charging prices that one can afford and then then pressures you into appts when you are sick. On top of it, Dr. Allen is "missing in action", refuses to manage personnel problems which cascades into a poor pt experience. I am "this close" to reporting them to VA DPOR for a look see so patients are protected. read more

Horrible experience with Ashburn Eye Care front desk employee! Love my doctor dislike the treatment at the front desk. Doctor asked front desk staff to call a specialist and provided a referral to help me obtain an appointment as soon as possible. After 4 weeks of waiting I phoned and the individual who answered stated they would follow up the next day. She was kind and polite. Today, after another 4 weeks of waiting, I phoned again. Today I was chastised and told we don't do for patients what they can do for themselves. You have to call the specialist. I said, " I am not disputing your word but you have some communication errors in your office and what you are telling me doesn't line up with what others had told me." She became angry, loud, talked over me and said if your doctor wants to see you after you see the specialist they will reach out to you. She then began to argue with me when I stated their office procedures needed improving and then said then said what do you want us to do? Do you want us to call or do you want to call? She was loud, agitated and said we will call for you on Monday. I really like my doctor. This office worker needs training and office procedures need improving. read more

This place could care less about your time or the concept of customer service. They constantly make you wait. I recently had an appointment that ran 1 hour late. While I waited they never came over to provide any updates, they just left me to wait. What is worse than the wait is the service you get.. When the time came to pick out glasses, the circus began. The ability to find something I wanted was poor. When I selected frames of interest they determined it would be best to get a frame that was not as wide. I perceived this to be a valuable opinion of an "expert". They decided to meet with their distributors to get the right glasses because they knew what I wanted. For weeks later no frames and no substantial follow up. I contacted the office manager about the concerns and she had someone call me right away but the result was the same, they did not have the frames for the manufacturers that they wanted to get to show me. They were rude about it and only had personal issues to use as an excuse. I then contacted the office manager again who was willing to lose the entire family business as opposed to changing the optician. In the end, the short story is that they care less about customer service. Beware! read more

The Dr had me try contact lenses after dialiting my eyes, now I can't read text on the tv or road sign or anything. This is after paying $90 for contact lense fitting. Will never go back there again. We took our children there for their annual eye exams. The eye exams were fine, an eye exam like any other. However, the rest of the experience left a lot to be desired. Our appointments were scheduled for 3:00pm. We arrived a few minutes before 3:00, to do paperwork. By 3:10, we were called back to do initial testing, the glaucoma test, etc, then asked to go sit in another waiting area. That waiting area was full, so we had to sit in the main store area. As we waited, we noticed other patients doing the same thing. At 3:30, 30 minutes past our scheduled appointment time, I asked the front desk how much longer it might be until we are seen. She went to go ask a technician in the back, and came back to tell me that one of my children was already in with the optometrist. No...my child was sitting within our line of sight, and if we were in with the doctor, I wouldn't have been asking when we would be called! She disappeared again, only to come back and tell me that we would be seen shortly, and there was an unusual wait. We continued to wait. Three children, waiting and waiting, with a few books, and one toy. And increasingly annoyed looks from the employees as they had to walk around our family. Remember, the waiting area (4 chairs only) was full. At 4:05, more than an hour after our appointment time, we were finally called back for their eye exams. The doctor was nice, and we believe that he got their prescriptions correct. For two eye exams, we were with him a total of 18 minutes. I asked him for copies of their prescriptions, and he said that they front desk would provide those. We were escorted back to the front desk, where we again had to wait to check out. We waited almost 15 minutes for our turn to check out, and get our invoice. When we asked for a copy of the prescription, too, the front desk acted surprised, and then printed it. Then, she had to go find the doctor, so he could sign in. We waited some more for his signature. In total, we were there for one hour and 45 minutes after the scheduled appointment time. For 18 minutes worth of eye exams. We didn't even pick out frames or buy glasses, just got the eye exam and prescription. We got exactly one apology from one person for all the time we spent waiting, and that was after multiple complaints. Other customers didn't even get that. The eye exams were fine, but you can get good eye exams anywhere. Go somewhere that values you as a customer, and your time. There's no excuse for this kind of disrespect for the consumer. read more

The doctor left my boyfriend out in the hall with dilated eyes for half an hour with no sunglasses. The person who was supposed to check us out did not care for our time at all and wouldn't check us out for a while. The doctor also rushed through everything and didn't care much for clients either. Like others, we love Dr. Slavin and have been patients of hers for 15+ years. The rest of the practice is incompetent. The front desk is not only unfriendly but they have no interest in customer service and the experience is getting worse and worse. Last visit we learned that the new glasses we purchased for my son in 2017 were fitted with his 2016 prescription. He's young and didn't know to tell us, so he couldn't see well for a year. This year, his new lenses came in with some problems, so we must wait an extra week for his new glasses. I wouldn't have known this unless I called. We have been waiting for 2 weeks for our daughters' contact lenses to come in and despite several attempts to confirm a delivery date, no one can give us a definite answer. The staff is unable to do its job. Now we are left scrambling to come up with loaner contacts to make it through our vacation. We have no confidence in this practice. read more

My first advice is to verify your insurance benefits if you plan on going to this office. My husband and I have repeatedly been overcharged and once I challenge the charges, they magically are reduced. Secondly, several of the front office staff is difficult to understand and do not practice common courtesy and professionalism. Commonly there are many customers waiting to be helped and while they believe they can multitask it results in being interrupted, ignored while answering phones or responding to others. My most recent visit, 2/1/13, resulted in once again being overcharged until I insisted they call my insurance, asking to speak to the doctor and after waiting for 15 mins being taken to a office manager that tells me the doctor is running late and cannot see me. I told her he was running late because he arrived late and was late for my appointment which was at 9:30am. I never did get to see the doctor and I called back and left a message for Dr. Allen to call me,. I also called the Chantilly office and left a message for Dr. Allen to call me and as of today, I have still not received a return call. read more

I was originally a patient there four years ago and left because of rude staff and inadequate service...so I should've known better when I went back to purchase glasses a month ago. There was an issue with my order, and they let three weeks go by without notifying me--despite telling me they would be done in a week and a half. (I had to physically go in and find out for myself.) When I finally went to pick them up, I didn't have time to get them fitted and said I would come back--the receptionist was extremely rude and told me that they could "maybe" fit me in. Worst front desk customer service I have ever experienced. I had been going here for 7 years until I finally had enough and had to switch to another eye doctor. I am on a daily contact usage, so when I got my new prescription they gave me some to last me the 10 days until my new ones came in. It wasn't until 3 1/2 weeks later until they came in, and they FORGOT to place my order-after I had already paid. This wasn't the first time this has happened. I understand that doctors offices can be busy, but after waiting for almost an hour every. single. time. I had an appointment--ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH! It wouldn't be so bad if it was only an hour to be initially seen, but it would then take at least another 20-30 minutes just to see the doctor. A routine check up would end up being about 2 1/2 hours every time. The doctors are great doctors, and have always done a wonderful job. I have no complaints in regards to the doctors. They have helped me countless times and have been the sole reason why I have come back so many times. But I simply cannot deal with the front desk staff anymore. They may be friendly, but they are not efficient at all. read more

It was ok. UNTIL I called for the PD number to order glasses elsewhere to save money. Then it was a huge hassle, including the "sales person" telling me that she had the measurement and is not required to give it to me, but if I want it I can pay an additional $35. Then, the front desk girl telling me that they don't have the number, when the other girl that they do have it and she was ready to take my order. It's disgusting that this practice is so deceiving. I wanted to know why it was never disclosed that I would have to pay extra to get the measurements on my prescription, and there was no answer. All of the other doctors that I have been too offer the info and tell me that I could save some money if I ordered them somewhere else! I typically go to the same doctor, but decided to try out a local business, and very sorry that I did. I hope its worth it to lose what would have been a great client, all for $35. read more

I am saddened to feel compelled to write this review. However, after 7 years with this practice, I have decided to sever ties. What began as a small billing inquiry, turned into one of the most upsetting and disappointing experiences I've ever had with a medical practice. The previous reviews regarding some unprofessional office staff have been my experience over the years as well, but I tolerated it as the practice location was convenient and I only interacted with the staff once a year. Unfortunately, my simple billing inquiry exposed not only concerning insurance/billing practices, but also that the unprofessional staff culture is bred from the top. Most disappointing, when I began to have concerns with the District Manager and learned that she reported directly to Dr. Allen, I tried to escalate my concerns to him and he refused to engage. My caution to future potential patients of this practice is to heed the previous comments regarding the staff and to beware of the insurance/billing practices. read more

I've been a patient here for years, but I live in Richmond now and I can only make it in every year or two for an exam. I was in the process of ordering new contacts and called to verify my prescription which I have done over the phone before. The receptionist said she could only give it to me in person or mail it to me. When I asked why she said she couldn't verify who I was over the phone. Which makes no sense, of course they can. All I needed was the numbers for my left and right eyes and she refused to tell me them even though she had them pulled up on her computer. She then says "I can tell you yes or no, if you tell me what you THINK your prescription is, but I can't tell you the actual numbers." So she MADE ME GUESS MY PRESCRIPTION. I was furious. She goes "that's correct for the left eye, but the right eye is a different number. You're so close though!" I cannot believe this actually happened. What terrible customer service and just an overall experience. I'm probably to a new eye doctor in Richmond because this is just ridiculous. DO NOT GO HERE. Being extremely pleased with my current Optometrist and their entire staff, I ended up at Ashburn Eyecare Associates purely by coincidence. My mother lives nearby in Ashburn and it was too early for my visit with her. My glasses needed tightening and a Google search led me here. While waiting I tried on several frames, which were unique and stylish. Sharon P. adjusted my glasses for free and provided recommendations for new frames with absolutely no sales pressure. She is trained in fine arts and has a keen eye for what shapes, sizes, and colors work best with facial structure and skin tone. I decided to come back to spend more time selecting a new pair of glasses, which I did not really need as my current ones were attractive and comfortable. Weeks later I returned and asked for Sharon P. She spent a lot of time with me and I ended up buying two pair of comfortable, fashionable glasses unlike any I had purchased in the past. It was an irresistible splurge. Sharon clearly loves people and enjoys helping them out. Unlike previous reviewers' experiences, on my two visits to this practice--both on Saturday--the front desk staff was friendly and efficient. Okay, so I can't disagree with some of the other comments on here... the front desk/supporting staff and the protocol for sequencing patients here has a lot to be desired. Fortunately, I didn't come here for the staff, I came here for an eye exam. Dr. Kuchem was very knowledgeable and thorough, and performed one of the most extensive eye exams I have ever received. She took the time to answer my questions and concerns in detail, on my level, without rushing me out the door. Bottom line: don't let the low reviews detract you from trying this place out (as they nearly did for me); I highly doubt I would've received a more complete and informative eye exam anywhere else. read more

Eye care is fine but billing practices are the worst I have ever seen for a medical practice. In two cases they came up with bills a year after services were performed telling us insurance did not pay. We had never been billed for those services or advised insurance did not pay. In one case insurance did not pay because of an error in timing on the part of Ashburn Eyecare. To make matters worse calls on the billing continually went un-returned. If you can tolerate the poor business practices the eye care etc is pretty good and hours are convenient. read more

This is literally the worst doctors office I have ever been to in my entire life. I randomly chose this eye doctor because of the location. I had my first appointment in February 2013. I saw Dr. Dresely who was very nice. I was having trouble with my contacts so he gave me eye drops to use for the next two weeks. I paid for my eye exam & left. When I came back for a follow up appointment, I saw Dr. Mahal. She was ridiculously rude & impatient with me for no reason. When I left, the office manager (a petite middle-eastern woman) told me I had to pay more money for the five minute visit I had with Dr. Mahal when all she did was look at my eyes to make sure the drops were working. I reluctantly pulled out my debit card & she physically grabbed it out of my hand & ran it for $60. They told me they ordered trial lenses for me & would be in touch. Weeks go by & I hear nothing. I call them & they say they don't have any for me & never ordered any. I'm furious because I've been waiting for them to come in. I receive a phone call a day later & apparently they do have my contacts in. I ask to see a different doctor than Dr. Mahal because of her attitude & was seen by Dr. Slavin. She was super nice & I ended up really liking her. It's a shame she works in a place like that. By this time it's late March & I'm finally receiving my first pair of trial lenses. For the next SEVEN months, I'm given countless pairs of trial lenses but they keep telling me I am not ALLOWED to order a years supply because my prescription has "not been finalized". Finally, in September, it's finalized & I'm "allowed" to order contacts. I put it off because I had all these trial pairs & didn't want to spend the $320 on contacts. (I wear a very high prescription so they're always a little more expensive, however, I've never been charged THAT much). Fast forward to April 2014, I call to ask for my prescription so I can order the lenses elsewhere, they tell me that because I had my exam done in February 2013, it's "way expired" & have to have a new exam done. Excuse me? I explain that it wasn't finalized until September 2013 because of THEM. She says she'll call me back. She never does. WHAT a surprise. I call a few times throughout the week & leave messages. I hear nothing back for an entire week so I finally physically go in there without an appointment & basically demand (in the most polite way possible) my prescription. The receptionist finds it sitting in a pile already waiting for me. Are you kidding me? Why didn't anyone call me & let me know? At this point it's almost comical. A year & two months later & I'm still receiving the worst customer service I've ever received. They're blatantly rude & overpriced, never call to follow up, don't return messages. I will obviously never be returning & I hope no one else does either. read more

Terrible customer service. Every time I go, the charges are different for the same service. There's never an explanation. If you go there, be prepared to negotiate. Be sure to be on time. If you are 15min late they will cancel your appointment and send you away. I decided to take my business elsewhere. While I understand I arrived late (15min), I think they should be a bit more flexible, especially since traffic in this area can be unpredictable, and you can easily loose 15 min due to circumstances beyond your control. If they are packing patients so close together that they can't tolerate the first appointment of the day being 15min late, then they're probably not prepared to spend sufficient time with patients that have complicated prescriptions or who have questions for the doctor. read more

I was told my lenses would be ready in 10 days.After 15 days I called them and was told my lens had just come in. What a coincidence. They were supposed to be attached to my glasses, they came attached to another frame so they had to go back. They were supposed to be for distance, they came in for reading so they had to go back. The front desk staff are some of the worst I've ever encountered. Rude, unfriendly, and actually seem inconvenienced to serve you. We've been patients of Ashburn Eyecare for over 10 years. With each year, our experience worsened to the point where I can't overlook the front desk staff any longer just to keep the doctors that we've always been happy with. Very sad that these doctors definitely lost our business because of their awful staff as I'm sure we're not the only family to give up on them. The wait times as well are ridiculous.
