Last year, 2025, I bought my frames here and already had a prescription from another optometrist. The whole process flowed very well (this is the North Lincoln Ave Location-Lincoln Square). They had frames I liked and I received my eyeglasses in a very timely manner. The office set up was very nice. Since I didn't see this particular Dr, I cannot comment on that. A business should be judged, not by how perfectly things go, it how they addresses problems and issues as they come up. I went to this location of MyEyeDr about a year and half ago because I noticed by my near vision going. I already wore glasses for distance, but suspected that I might needed progressives. After I did the exam, my suspicions were confirmed. The exam was quick and efficient, and they did push a few extras not covered by my insurance, but I didn't feel super pressured. I ended up doing the extra exams. Yes, I got a little up sold, but I hadn't had an eye exam in a few years and figure what amounted to spending a few extra dollars was with it. After the exam, I sat down with sales guy to work out all the features of my glasses and lenses. Yes, again, I was a bit up sold, but again, I don't feel any pressure. I chose the top tier progressives because I think that's was best for my eyes. A discussion of prices really isn't relevant because, I assume, everyone's insurance reimbursement is different or maybe you don't have vision insurance, so a price comparison would not an apples to apples comparison. What it comes down to was the staff and customers service. First, everyone I dealt with was nice and willing to help. Second, since getting my glass, there had been two times I've needed help. Each time the staff was great. A few months ago, one of my lens popped out. I was able to come in and they put the lens back in and tightened my glasses without an appointment. Last week, my frames cracked (that's on me for opting for the cheaper, insurance covered frames rather than something more expensive and possibly better quality). I was worried that I would have to spend the time and money to do a new round of exams and get all lenses. However, since the lens that popped out was still in good shape they don't push the most expensive option and helped me find new frames. This location didn't have the frames I had purchased, but in less a few hours they found that a store in Washington, DC had a pair. Within only a few days, they had the new frames in store for me to pick up. I did have to pay for them. I paid the portion they think insurance will not cover (about a little more than 50% of the cost). I waiting to see if insurance will cover the rest. In any event, it's going to much less expensive than getting new frames plus new lenses. One of the draw backs is that their hours seem a bit restrictive and sometimes it feels like it's hard to an appoint when you want. Over all, I'm pleased with the lenses and with their efforts to help with me through the issues with my frames. read more

Doctor was great (Lombard location), but the staff is terrible. No clue on their own business. Was supposed to be completely covered by insurance as their staff confirmed, but got multiple bills. Then couldn't even pay the bill due to the reference number on the bill not being recognized. Then just looped around. Avoid this place unless you want headaches over trying to pay a bill they said you wouldn't get in the first place. read more

After a friend had a bad experience with them I realized I had never updated my review. I found that as My Eye Dr took over the location the quality of service I got from them declined. Like the people at the location were fine, but the delivery and logistics around the glasses was where things were a problem. Clean office, up-front pricing, professional staff, covid precautions in place. I see some pretty damning reviews on here, but none are recent. They must have had a change in staff. This was my first time into this place, and I had no problems at all. I warned the technician that I often have trouble at eye doctor visits because I DO NOT deal well with people touching my eyes. That air puff test is anxiety-producing torture. She just said that they don't do the air puff thing anymore and pulled out something that looked like a forehead thermometer. Turns out it's a little laser scanner for the eyes. Quick and simple and I didn't blink at all. read more

Don't ever opt for the insurance here for your eye glasses. I spent $300 for glasses here and opted for extra insurance for $25. A few months later I lost my glasses and told them I had insurance. They said they don't cover it if you lost it. They should've been more transparent that if you lose it you won't be able to replace it and had to pay another $300 to replace my glasses. read more

I have been remiss in my update as I felt that if you don't have something nice to say... While I did get my sunglasses, and they are great, the resolution was off putting as I was made to feel like a liar. Came back to see my eye Dr, Dr Lindsay Luker, who I am a big fan of and the reason they score a 3 star (she would receive 5 stars alone) but left without perusing the frame selection they have. FWIW, those of us that have insurance know what a great value it is I really don't need to hear from across the room how much someones glasses are and the amazing deal that someone achieved due to insurance. read more

This business just cannot hide the fact that they will do anything to fleece you out of money unnecessarily. So, anyone who knows what's up should not purchase either glasses or contact lenses at this store. Once again, it is a franchise, and they come up with really crafty deceptions and lies to make money. I really don't know how their sales associates go home at night after they've been instructed to lie to and manipulate customers. My contact lens prescription was about to expire, but it was still valid for *8 days* when I decided to order 4 boxes of contacts from the online contact lens company with a phone number in their name. A few hours after I ordered--the total was $200 for four boxes--I got an email saying my order was "deleted". All because the "doctor" just didn't feel like letting me use a perfectly valid prescription. In other words, "we feel like making you go through another eye exam and pay us money before you shall get any more contact lenses." The sales associate said the doctor would call me about this the next day--Saturday--to discuss. SIGH. Turns out, she didn't call back until Tuesday. The original eye doc I saw here last year isn't even working here anymore, and what's hilarious is when I got my original exam last year, she even suggested a few online companies to obtain eyeglasses from instead. So I emailed my prescription to another online company, and actually ended up paying $14 less for what I originally ordered with the first company. About $47 per box= $186 for four boxes. The second online company took my valid prescription, no problem. They will get my repeat business. MyEyeDr, along with 1-800 whatever dot com, will not ever again. Maybe this company should adjust their business practices instead of directing us to call a phone number. read more

I concur with the other reviewer. I too chose to get insurance for my eye glasses. They didn't explain what the insurance covered but it was an affordable price of $25. I misplaced them so I thought I lost them I called to get my eye glasses replaced but they said losing them did not cover it. I'll never gone here again. I have been blessed with good vision and didn't have an established eye doctor. I had a mishap while working on a DIY project and got sawdust in my eye (even with safety glasses on). I called them bc it was extremely uncomfortable and they were able to get me an appointment for a few hours later. The dr removed a particle that was stuck under my eyelid and gave me some great advice and medication recommendations. I'm on the mend and very appreciative. read more

The assistant Joyce processed my glasses under my husband's name while fitting me for the glasses. Later that day called back and stated that the transaction needed to be voided out , so I then paid them a second time .The manager of the establishment supposedly processed a refund that we have yet to receive. My family and I have been going here even when is was Spex. There is horrible construction going on in front of their office causing a traffic pile up and lack of parking. The office should have called all patients that day to inform them to plan for extra time to find parking a few blocks away if they are going to turn you away when you show up 10 minutes late. I called this location to find out if they fill other eye doctor's prescriptions and to ask if they can order a particular type of lenses I need. They do fill other doctor's prescriptions. Great! But the answer I received about the type of lens was "we have something better!" Better for whom? I've never been there, they don't know my history, and I'm the CUSTOMER!!!!!!!!! The only reason this gets higher than one star is the actual optometrist(s) on staff are helpful and overall delightful people. The front desk/sales associates are god awful in their service skills. I came in to renew my prescription, get a years worth of contacts and try to purchase new glasses. I was sold a year of contacts by a less than polite sales associate, and then promptly told that I should wait until the year rolled around so I could use my insurance allowance on my glasses. I quickly reminded her I buy contacts every year so it's fine if I don't get any insurance allowance and I'd just pay for them. She proceeded to ignore me and help someone else. I'm not sure if I looked like I couldn't afford eyeglasses that day? Or if she didn't want to sell a designer pair of glasses to someone who was ready to pay for them up front that same day. This was my second visit, and my last. My experience was subpar from start to finish, with exception of the actual optometrist, herself. - Waited 20 mins past appointment time to be called back - Informed front desk personnel that I wanted to pass on any service not covered by insurance - Had exam, which was fine - After exam, was told to choose a free pair of sunglasses with my contact lens purchase, and that shipping would be free - Sat at front table with sales associate, who informed me my bill would be $200+, without any explanation of what that included - Upon review of detail, found I was being billed for a year's worth of contacts (without being asked how many sets I'd like to purchase), and $75 for a contact fitting (not indicated as extra $) - After discussion to correct the order and the charge, sales associate walks away to print receipt, comes back without sunglasses - I ask about my free sunglasses, and only then am I informed the promotion only applies to 1 year's worth purchase of contacts. And, oh, there's no free shipping anymore, either - After further review of invoice once home, and a quick look online, find the price I paid for my contacts is 50% more than online sites that also offer free shipping As someone who works in the service industry, I couldn't believe how I was treated today, and definitely recommend you take your business elsewhere. Came in for an eye exam. The doctor was good. The salesman was pushy and slightly rude. While waiting for my eyes to dilate, I was placed back into the waiting area and encouraged to look at new frames. I quickly ascertained that none of them were my style (after 20 year of glasses I know what I like and don't settle). The male salesperson continued to push lenses on me despite my insisting that I was fine. A few weeks later I had found frames at another shop but I needed a copy of my prescription. I went in and was helped by the same male salesperson. He was put off by my purchasing frames elsewhere and told me that another shop can't guarantee that my lenses are the right prescription. Again, having had glasses for the past 20 years, I've never had a problem with getting my prescription filled correctly. I will say that before I had the eye exam there we had stopped in casually to look at glasses and were not met by the same pushiness. It was once I was in the system that they acted like I owed them a sale. Needless to say we will not be going back for an eye exam or anything else. read more

Both my husband and I got our glasses here last month. We both started wearing glasses from our childhood -- my eye sight is not so bad and can getaway not wearing glasses or contacts most of time with astigmatism being the main problem. My husband can't function without them. Bottom line, we have gone through many many glass shopping. I am giving two stars instead of minus 10, because their optometrist is good. She is very personable and thorough. The price is not bad, at least with our insurance coverage. Place is nicely kept. And now, the bad part. The service is pretty bad. The day we were in, their system was down, and they couldn't even give us how much the select frames and lenses, after we gave them all of our information. We did all that over the phone afterwards. And two weeks after we gave them our credit card number, they called, and said, something was messed up, and they had to redo my husband's glasses. So it took more than a month to get our glasses! The staff..... mark about the worst among the worst I have ever dealt with. The day of our initial visit, their front room clerk made us take two hours picking out our frames. He was so confident with his aesthetic sense, and wouldn't let us leave until he was absolutely sure we got the frames that suit our face as well as being up to date. We still thought he was being helpful, and left the store with good heart, even though the system was down and we didn't know how much we would end up paying. When we went back after a month, the same guy came out to help adjust the glasses. My husband found he had some distortion of vision with his new glasses. The guy said, it's different prescription, and it will take a month to adjust. Yeah, seriously, that's what he said. So I said, no, that doesn't make sense, and I pointed out his new lenses were 50% thicker than his previous ones. My husband usually gets them triple compressed. The clerk said, he didn't put that option, since he knew money was an issue for us. (!) I was extremely offended at his comment, since we were the nice customers who let him waste our two hours without even knowing how much they were going to cost, and generously agreed to pay whatever it comes to later. Writing down this, I feel like maybe we were the stupid customers maybe... Not without an attitude the clerk agreed to get different lenses equivalent to the previous, if we pay the difference. We were going to go with that, but as he was putting in the order, their manager, Carla (I think is her name) came out, and said, because of the nature of the frame we picked for my husband, getting thinner lenses wouldn't be the best option. The frames were too thin, and if the lenses were any thinner, the lenses would be chipped easily. She offered some other option to resolve the distorting view issue, and even though we are not fully satisfied, we decided to just go with that. Also Carla personally apologized so I wish it was just over with that. Then, I realized my glasses have longer legs then the ones I am used to, and it ends up slipping from my face all the time. I really didn't want to, but ended up going back to the store to fix the issue. Different clerk met me, and he looked at the glasses, and looked at my face, and commented, 'I see why that's happening', and did not really fix it. Maybe he couldn't. From googling, I realized Asians have shorter distance between eye and ear. Funny, I never ran into problem such as this while I was shopping glasses in three different continents over last 30 years. So, in the end, two hours spent with a guy with extreme aesthetic sense got us two frames that don't work with us. I generally don't like to be treated like a fool, and the worse thing is being treated like a fool by somebody who doesn't know what he is doing. read more

Next up...picking new glasses; 3 stars, ok but surely not packed with any extra customer service. I'll make a really long story short. -Went to Lincoln Square Optical and picked out a pair of frames. -Gave them my insurance card and prescription. -After my insurance discounts of $300, the price I was given for a pair of eyeglasses was $690! That's right, nearly $700. I almost threw up. -The price tag on the frames was $500 so i asked if they could reduce the price. I went in to buy some new frames because mine are getting a bit worn out. Staff was very friendly and helpful in selecting frames that interested me. I found a pair that I liked, and then the fun began... They noticed that it had been a while since my last eye appointment. True, but my prescription hasn't changed by any noticeable degree in at least 10 years. Nonetheless, they made it sound like they wouldn't sell me the lenses/frames without getting an exam - like it was a health hazard to myself and those around me. Fine, I was overdue anyway, and I have insurance, so I agreed. Their cost estimate: o Exam cost after insurance: $60. o Lenses after insurance: $100, with the option to pay more for anti-scratch coating. o Frames after insurance: $120. TOTAL: $280 + value of anti-scratch coating. I heard alarm bells at the exam cost, knowing that I had full coverage and a $10 co-pay. So, I doublechecked my plan. Here's what it really should have cost with my insurance... o Exam: $10 co-pay. They wanted to do $50 worth of non-covered extra tests as part of their "standard" exam. o Lenses: $10 co-pay for lenses & frames, which includes free anti-scratch coating. Not sure what they were looking at to get the $100 estimate. o Frames: $120. They got this right. Woo! TOTAL: $140 Cost Difference: +$140 + value of anti-scratch coating vs. what I should actually pay. Sorry, but I won't do business with a place that tries to upsell without explanation. Know your insurance coverage and be skeptical before you go here. 1 star for being friendly/helpful, 1 (generous) star for correct math on the frames. read more

After going to another eye doctor in the neighborhood (Eye See in Ravenswood and they were wonderful) I realized that I got charged for a test that I didn't not want and did not ask for. They framed it as my co-pay and because this was a new insurance I didn't know any better. I feel so ripped off and to ad further insult to injury, Eye See said that multiple trial lenses in different brands (including the one I've been using which I asked Spex to order and they refused) will all be here on Thursday, which makes it a two day turn over, not a month like Spex. Also, I do not appreciate them calling me multiple times the morning after I posted my original review to discuss it, all before 10 am. I do not care how nice the staff is. This is a sheisty company that uses bait and switch, and should be avoided at all cost. read more

They are very pleasant and helpful here at Spex. The selection of glasses is top rate. The issue I have is they charge you $10 copay with insurance ( others didn't ) then $50 for some procedure that insurance doesn't cover. Unless I missed the Nobel committees award to Spex' procedure , it's probably not necessary . I told the woman at the desk I didn't want it. It was done anyway and I was charged the $50. read more

This is my neighborhood Spex where I return once a year to have my eyes checked and order my contacts and occassionally buy new glasses . I first came here because it's really one of the only places that accepts my Vision plan, but I like it well enough to keep going back. Anyone who deals with the bad fortune or genetics of poor eyesight knows that like many other health issues, it's expensive. Exams, even when covered, end up being expensive with all the various tests, etc. that you don't even know are extra or necessary. This place is no different. But they have always been really thorough and professional. Dr.Luker, the optometrist here, really seems to know her stuff and is so nice as well. I really like her and feel comfortable asking questions and talking to her. She's great! The other employees I've worked with are also friendly and knowledgeable. My main issue is that they seem to only carry the REALLY expensive frames. Like previously mentioned, I acknowledge that buying glasses is usually really pricey, but they have a pretty limited selection of very expensive designer brands and not even all the well-known designers that you name-recognize. This isn't a huge issue for me since I rarely wear my glasses and only replace them every 4-5 years, but if you want a good selection of the only moderately expensive frames, I would look elsewhere. I've been a client of Spex for several years, and have remained loyal mostly due to their convenient locations (I've also done business at their Evanston, Lincoln Park, West Loop stores). That's not to say I haven't always had a pleasant experience; but they are on the pricier side and as someone who is VERY myopic, finding a pair of glasses that I love and I feel confident wearing can take a toll on my wallet. All that said, my most recent experience at the Lincoln Square store inspired me to write a review. As I'd mentioned, shopping for frames, as someone as nearsighted as I am, can be a daunting task. I'm vain, I want to look good! And I don't want to throw down a couple hundred dollars on a pair of glasses I'll never wear again. Enter optician Scott C. I've been wearing glasses since I was 6, but for the first time, I had an absolute blast trying out various frames. Scott listened to my concerns; sized up my general style and helped me pick out some pretty kick ass specs. I really loved his patient demeanor and his frank, honest feedback. I was so pleased with my options, I had a tough time choosing! I made a game time decision and couldn't be happier. Spex is a great place to get frames, but this location in particular is my favorite. I wish I could give them 6 stars! I had an issue with a pair of frames and Brooke was absolutely fantastic. She went the extra mile and provided amazing service, following up with me at all steps along the way and most important following through. She definitely transformed a difficult situation into a easy experience. Thanks again Brooke!! As a sidenote, Spex carries Lindberg frames (which are THE BEST...feels like you're wearing nothing at all...nothing at all...) - there's not too many vendors that carry this brand. So their selection of comfortable, hip and durable frames is difficult to beat. Couple this with top-notch service and expertise and you'd be crazy to go anywhere else. read more

The exam is expensive. Even with my insurance I have to pay another 120 for exam plus contact lenses fitting. Plus they never have your contacts in stock so you need to come back again to pick them up. Wear them and come back to check again. My mother had such a wonderful experience at Spex last weekend that I feel inclined to write a review on her behalf. She'd purchased a pair of glasses a couple years ago from the same store and returned for the first time, because with time they had loosened and were now somehow crooked. She was assisted by Brooke--and though I haven't met her--sounds like such a considerate, friendly woman. As my mother describes her, she was "very nice." Upon entering, she was greeted and asked politely to wait just a few moments, as Brooke was assisting another customer. In no time, my mother was explaining her issue to Brooke, who gladly offered not only to tighten the screws--but to replace the plastic grips (which had also been worn down), at no charge. The service was quick and efficient, but in no way rushed. My mother has truly noticed a change, and it has made such a difference to her. I went for an appointment just to check my prescription and order sunglasses as I needed some prescription ones for traveling. I already has been to a specialist in another state due to some eye issues at the start of the year and see them yearly now. Had to battle with them about the stupid eye wellness exam. I'm not paying $50 more for something I don't need. The doctor was good and understood but all the staff just wanted to argue the point. Then came time to find what I wanted. Which I did but would just have to order. Ok that's fine. Tell me a week and will text me. Well the week goes by and I hear nothing. So I call. Get told oh sorry it's on backorder. To which I said is this a backorder that I'll never get it? Or something that will take a short time frame. I'm told the later. Well another two weeks go by and was told I would have them within two weeks. There were no calls or anything. So I had to call. Get told oh I need to talk to someone specific who was on break and would call me back. Well they never did so I had to call again. Now I'm told oh it's another 3-5 weeks. Which is just plain annoying. I'm not going to be out the $$ with not having something here. Why the heck can't you advise or know when someone is putting in an order if something is low stock or back ordered? How does it take a week for that to be figured out? I am going on a trip tomorrow and figured a month should be more than enough time to get sunglasses (for driving the 300+ miles) but I guess not. Don't recommend and will never use again. read more

I have perfect vision but my life partner does not. After long delaying the purchase of new specs, we made our way to my fave neighborhood to get some glasses. Can't recall of the guy who helped us, but he was wonderful. Patient as L.P. tried on a few dozen pairs of glasses and I gave inconsistent feedback. The guy never pushed pairs we didn't want or were too pricey on us. He listened to the style we wanted and provided some great recos. The glasses were a bit pricey but the dude knocked down the price a little bit, which was incredibly nice. And the glasses were ready two days later, a day earlier than he had predicted. Should my perfect vision ever become compromised, I know right where I am going. read more

I went to Spex to get some new frames with an existing prescription, so I can't comment on the Optician services (hence the 4 stars). Tabitha graciously helped me try on about 20 different pairs of glasses and guided me to a pair of amazing Etina frames that I probably wouldn't have tried on my own. I have gotten so many compliments on them and the quality is excellent. I found the total cost with my insurance to be reasonable and comprable to other shops, and I enjoyed the ambiance and friendly customer service. I almost forgot, while I was there another person came in looking for help with a messed up eyeglass frame and they fixed him up in no time and at no charge. The store itself is clean and well organized which I appreciate. I like that the glasses are easily accessible so you don't need to have a case unlocked every time you want to try something on. They definitely have a good selection. I had an issue with the manager. I'm not sure of her name but she was incredibly rude to me and treated me as if I was planning on stealing something. I know I look young, but I have shopped at Spex on multiple occasions, even when it was still Lincoln Square Optical. The manager was curt and cold to me, while the other two employees (two young women) were very warm and welcoming. The manager watched me like a hawk while I walked around looking at the cases of glasses and then demanded at one point that I take a seat and wait for a salesperson to help me. I had not touched anything, mind you. I was simply walking around and looking. This woman was so unpleasant I considered walking out without making a purchase, only to have my mind changed by one of the pleasant sales people. She was helpful and honest when picking out glasses for me and I ended up purchasing my everyday pair. To the manager, learn something from your employees and behave yourself. read more

What a nightmare. This place just recently became "my eye doctor" used to be spex. Before that it was lincoln square optical. I have shopped at the store in its different iterations for more than 20 years. Never have I had a problem like I am having now. My fancy glasses broke and they sent them away never to be seen again. been a month so far. Stuck using my old scratched up pair. with the old prescription. Nothing but excuses. Their staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable when looking for new frames. They are in the area, which is key for me.......i can't complain about prices but let me tell you......I'd take convenience over driving downtown or somewhere far to save a few bucks anyway! I got my new Oakley Crosslink glasses weeks ago. I didn't purchase them from Spex. Instead, I bought the frame online, and lens from Walmart. After several days' trial, I found the nose pads on Crosslink are not designed for my Asian nose. It took me several days to search online, trying to find replacement Asian-fit nose pads, but no luck. Then I send Oakley customer service an email, they responded that I can try authorized Oakley prescription dealers. Spex is the nearest one. I took a chance to send Spex an email for help, Brooke replied me really quick. She said she got the information from Oakley that Oakley has Asian-fit nose pads, but in back order. And she had already ordered them, free of charge for me! Today Brooke informs me that the nose pads are arrived! I drive there in the afternoon. Spex is a lovely place, people are friendly. It only take them 5 mins to replace the nose pads for me, and I have a spare pair left! My nose feels much better now! Pretty good service! I will have my next pair of glasses there! read more

Very good service and great eye doctor here. I can't speak to how their prices compare to other competitors but I have been very happy with their service and expertise. This has been from Spex to their change to MyEyeDr. The new doctor replacing Lindsay is very good and explains very well. read more
