I am a medical professional who has advocated for this clinic to provide gender affirming care for nearly two years now with no success. This clinic does not provide gender affirming care for patients. Here are some clinics in town that can offer gender affirming care: Blink Optical : exams start at $100 out of pocket Eyes on Broadway: exams start at $200 out of pocket South Waterfront Eyecare: exams start at $265 Hawthorne Vision Center does not list their exam prices on their website and will not respond to phone calls or emails (in my lived experience), so you may need to stop into the clinic and ask about pricing in person if you are interested in establishing care. But if you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally to the transgender community, I encourage you to go elsewhere. Blink and Eyes on Broadway are both owned by members of the LGBTQ+ community, so there's really no reason to patronize this clinic as an LGBTQ+ individual. Dr Uhlig and Nina, I wish you the best in learning gender affirming care practices for your clinic. Maybe one day you can treat gender diverse folks, but it is clearly beyond your capabilities as medical providers currently; a fact that is both sad and also entirely preventable. I can't speak highly enough about how comfortable they made me feel here. From the front desk to the trainee doctor (second day!) to the doctor himself, it was as easy as it could be. I got a new prescription recently here and asked for the same lens treatments that are on my old glasses to be used on my new glasses. When I picked up the new glasses i was assured that all was well, but when the sun finally came out a few days later I realized that the tinting treatment had not been included after all. When I called I was told that the tinting treatment would be an additional $129! Either intentionally deceptive or a major (to me $129 is major) mistake. I came here to see an OD because I was assaulted at work the day before my visit by someone who shone a strong laser in my left eye ( I operate trains for Trimet). I came in with a painful left eye that was visibly more red than the right eye. I complained of a headache as well as pain in the eye. As soon as Dr. Mcllhattan heard that my injury was from a workplace incident has entire demeanor changed. I thought this was strange but was in need of medical advice as I was extremely concerned about irreversible damage to my eye and was rather desperate of help and didn't know who to turn to. Dr. Mcllhattan did a cursory eye exam which concluded with him waving a grid pattern (an Amsler grid) in front of my face and saying " you don't see any missing or wavy lines here do you"? Thinking I could trust this man I agreed with his leading statement without really taking the time to look at the grid. I would have had to take the grid from his moving hand and place it on a steady surface to properly assess the grid pattern. Having it waved quickly in front of your face doesn't seem like a best practice. Nor does the leading question. The dr. concluded by telling me that my eye discomfort was due to eyelash mites. I, rather shocked, left the office wondering what just happened. Two weeks later and I still have eye pain and discomfort and am crazy worried I may have permanent damage. I will Likely have to pay the $170 bill to this place out of pocket and I am concerned that workers comp will not allow for a more thorough and more component exam/second opinion. In short- this Dr. seems highly unethical and more concerned with getting paid (apparently many drs don't like workers comp claims) than actually taking care of his patients. I have bought several sets of glasses from this place in the past. I won't be doing so again. read more

Love, Love, Love I'm so happy to be back at Hawthorne Vision, after years of using another insurance provider that didn't cover their expertise. Strict Covid regulations are practiced; including limiting people in the office, temperature taking, questionnaires, hand sanitizers, and mandatory mask/ face coverage. The entire staff is friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The standout though the visit is Dr. Love. His bedside manner is so refreshing; he is thorough, patient, and kind. If you're in the market for new glasses, or need an eye examination, Hawthorne Vision is hands down my favorite spot to do so. read more

The last time I was inside Hawthorne Vision Center it was after I received a text that said my new replacement lenses were in the store. There was parking available in the tiny parking lot. Schmoopie noticed the yellow Volkswagen bug parked outside this time. I wonder did the employees get bribed with cupcakes again. Although, I've had a lot of free cupcakes from my previous employers (mostly corporate bosses give those out) there was a short time when I would eat only sugar free foods because I didn't want to feel horrible during the "sugar crash." But, I digress. The employee that took my glasses walked away before I was able to tell him I wanted to keep my older lenses. I told the manager on duty (MOD). Also, was there ever a time when Schmoopie didn't go with me... yes. I went by myself often to Hawthorne Vision Center. It was over 10 years ago. I have been going (and so has Schmoopie) to Hawthorne Vision Center since about 2009 or so. Hawthorne Vision Center has by far offered the best vision care experience I've ever had. Dr. Uhlig blew me away with her knowledge and her ability to break things down into layman's terms so that way I can wrap my pea brain around it all. She didn't seemed rushed and was very willing to answer my questions as well as inform me about future treatments. The rest of the staff is very friendly as well. This place just makes you feel comfortable. I have a over sized head, so finding glasses to fit is a difficult process. I've only gotten contacts from here, but I will be getting new frames next month. I'll fill ya in on the out come of that later. read more

My prescription expired over the summer and my only pair of working glasses just broke. Dr. Uhlig refuses to extend the prescription, even though this is legal and not uncommon. My prescription has barely changed in the last 10 years. I even offered to have my MD call and explain why I should not risk an exam. Apparently this "doctor" wants me to choose between risking Covid and being able to work. It's appalling and immoral. read more

Friendliness eye clinic on this side of town. I've been a patient for over 6 years and now my whole family gets seen here. My kids love it! They have toys, stickers, and suckers for them to enjoy. I enjoy the eye books and the clear cut pricing. They accept my VSP so I'm usually left paying 30% out of pocket but I know my exact amount before I leave no hidden costs. They don't carry Oakley anymore which I'm disappointed about but they do have a good selection of other brands. Would definitely recommend read more

I've been going to the Hawthorne Vision Center for years and I've had nothing but good experiences with their doctors, opticians, and staff. One year I opted to cheap out and go to a major chain--after two bunk prescriptions and countless visits for corrections, I came back to HVC full of appreciation and gratitude for the flawless service and quality that they provide. Dr. Uhlig, in particular, is a great doctor--professional, friendly, knowledgeable, good at breaking down things in plain language, and including me (the patient) in decision-making for my healthcare (I'm wasn't ready for transition lens and Dr. Uhlig gave me the pros and cons of switching over). Jane, the Optical Manager, is a rockstar. She knows ALL of the frames and is spot on in regards to what will look and perform best for the patient. I inquired about some older frame models--Jane not only remembered what looked best on me (I had tried them on a year prior), she immediately went to the manufacturer's website and got me hooked up with the frame. I didn't think that anyone could fill Marcello's (Matteo's ?) shoes, but Jane has done it! They carry a bunch of gorgeous frames. I've ordered at least 5 La Font frames from them and I get daily compliments on whichever pair I'm wearing. You won't get the bargain basement prices of places like America's Best, but you will get excellent service, gorgeous frames, and a good eye exam which are well worth the money (I speak from experience). read more

I finally caved and got a new pair of nerd goggles. My previous ones were, shall we say, no longer fashionable, plus they were on their last legs. I'm a contact lens person 99% of the time but my eyes need to breathe occasionally. This is a multi-visit review, starting from a few years ago: The doctor told me, point blank, I needed to take better care of my eyes. The brand of contacts I was using were making my eyes grow permanent red lines in their desperate attempt to get some oxygen. Couple that with my resistance to wear glasses (I have extremely light sensitive eyes, sunglasses are my jam) and I was going to look like I had a perma-hangover if I continued like I was. After a year wearing a new brand, my eyes actually started to heal themselves! Plus they feel so, so much better. I would insert a comment about lubrication, but this is a family site. On top of the real talk from the doc, I've had three super thorough eye exams. Years of getting my eyes did at Costco did not prepare me for that. Dr. Costco never dialated my baby blues, nor make notes about, well, anything. Being told I have lots of scars on my body proper, I'm used to. Scarring in my eye not so much. Turns out all those times my nugget hit the snow while skiing resulted in some tears of the ole retina. And that means it is partially covered by regular health insurance, not just vision insurance. Thanks, Obama! My only complaint is that you are handed off to the optician after your exam. It's not a hard sell necessarily, but there is a definite feeling that you should buy from them and not Warby Parker. I was feeling flush and ended up getting my frames there so if you see me wearing my glasses in public, I expect you to oooh and ahhh. Michael Kors isn't for basics. read more

My eyesight's bad. Before Hawthorne Vision, I'd always approached eye exams with butterflies in my stomach, as if I were about a fail an important test. Not so anymore! In fact, I now arrive at appointments practically bursting into song. (Okay, it's usually because I'm there to see Dr. Love, who shares his name with one of The Most Awesome Kiss Songs of all time...) Dr. Love is on duty Saturdays, so very convenient for my work schedule. He has a quick wit and an easygoing manner. For weekday appointments, I see Dr. Uhlig. She's one smart lady whose passion for the job is very apparent. Both docs are caring and take time to explain, as well as listen, while still keeping a tight schedule. The Opticians are helpful, and will give you honest feedback. They carry a nice selection of designer frames, including my favorite, Lafont. Front desk staff and the technicians are terrific too. They offer online appointments with a quick response, and online bill pay. Saturday hours are a big plus. I never hesitate to refer friends to Hawthorne Vision. I've been a patient there for around 15 years now; there's no reason to go anyplace else. read more

I have been going here since I moved to Portland in 2003. I strayed once. Once! It didn't mean anything, but I sure heard all about it when I crawled back to HV the following year. I apologized. I didn't realize we were exclusive. I can't read minds, what?! Truth is, they always do a thorough, excellent job here. I see no fewer than five people each time I come in - receptionist, doctor's assistant, doctor, sales associate, and finally the check-out/money person. It's a social experience. I recently decided to make the occasional switch to contact lenses, convinced they would increase my accuracy at the shooting range. It was becoming hard to concentrate on placement when I was busy trying to balance both my seeing glasses and the required safety glasses on the bridge of my nose. Plus, I do something with my wrists when I shoot that makes me take a fair amount of brass to the face, so I typically wear big safety glasses. They managed to find just the right contacts for me quickly, despite my astigmatism in both eyes. I was warned that I may have to experiment with a couple different brands and angles, but thanks to the doctor's experience, her first choice worked great (the proof is in the bullseyes). Given that I wear glasses 95% of the time, I often spend more time in the store portion of HV rather than the examination room. With the assistance of a sales associate, I try on anything and everything. It can be quite a process given that I cannot see a damned thing when I'm trying on frames. If my process is any indication, they likely spend much time wiping nose prints off hand-held mirrors here. So, after seven years, I guess this is my place. I come in every year, taking my eye health very seriously. Besides, I don't think our relationship could withstand my straying again. I have a good thing going here. Okay I just went to order glasses again and realized the "new" prescription from here means my eyes just dramatically got better vision? Yeah right! I knew something was wrong with the prescription, but since I was now wearing contacts I thought that was the case, nope. The doctor didn't take anytime to make sure I was seeing clearly, and like some people have fears of dentists I have fears of Optometrists. So I just trusted that she was doing it right. My vision is still blurry and now I know why!!! When they ask "read this line" and I can barely make it out, you would think they would move forward to try to correct it. I'm so frustrated. Also the Dailies she talked me into, make me want to rip my eyes out. They are fine for a couple hours, but not even close to 8. I've never had that problem with contacts before. Also in my ignorance when she said $90 a box, I didn't realize that meant one for each eye(yeah partly my fault, but that should be clarified) So lesson learned there. On top of that, I knew I wasn't going to buy glasses at that moment because I was still happy with the ones I have, but I asked the receptionist to get my PD(pupillary distance) for me and she refused, stating if I didn't buy glasses there, she wouldn't do it! WTF so I just dropped hundreds of dollars on my eye exam and you won't pick up the PD machine and take 5 seconds out of your day to tell me? I have to use a ruler a home? Seriously, the lady at Walmart will pick up the machine and tell me if I ask. Already cancelled any further appts and will warn everyone to stay away. read more

I was fine with them until they kept sending a bill for a random 94.00 that didn't make sense. every month i called; every month they said a billing "expert" would call me back, never did; they just continued to send me the bill. once after i called, they did add a sticky note to the bill with a very unclear explanation of the $94.00, and threatening to send me to collections and adding a 50% collection fee. and it's not like these are automated letters. someone at the front office is choosing to deal with customers this way. not one returned phone call. BTW, i bought about $1,200.00 worth of glasses so the $94 they say i didn't pay made no sense and i certainly wasn't trying to get away with not paying. so i called and paid the 94.00 and asked for my records so i could go elsewhere. guess what? the records never arrived and i had to call back. just an example of the front office not really caring about customer service. no place, no matter how large of a frame selection, is worth dealing with a customer circus like this. read more

I'll try to keep this simple-- Hawthorne Vision Center made a very positive impression. They have a very comfortable waiting room with really good magazines and those Brain Quest (or whatever they're called) book things. The staff was really pleasant and professional and seemed to get a good read on both my husband and my need to have a little space when picking out frames. My doctor, who may or may not have been named Fiber (my memory... not so good) was very quick and efficient but seemed to really like talking about eyeballs. My husband also really liked Dr. Love. I'm glad I didn't have my exam with him though because I'm the type who couldn't help but make a very lame joke about his name being "Dr. Love" and I'm sure I would have embarrassed myself. read more

I just went for a new pair of glasses so I can't give an opinion on the dr. The help from Nina was amazing!!! It was the kind of great help that you would expect from a fancy boutique. She was fashionable, knowledgeable, and helpful. I had my tiny baby in a carrier and she was able to get me in and out in less than 30 minutes. Update 2017 I just went back for my second pair of glasses and Nina helped me find another great pair. I had to get my prescription from a fancy/trendy place (waited too long), but even though the fancy place had lots of fun glasses, Nina helped me find cooler ones for more than a hundred dollars less. read more

Who sez eye-wear can't be fun, fashionable, and just down right usable. My eyes are pretty bad, lazy, stigmatized, etc. But they are a lovely hazel color. Also I need several pairs of glasses. I don't wear progressives. I had a bad experience with one pair, that never quite worked and the optometrist made me feel like i would never find a pair to work with "those eyes". So, I have been a bit leery about trying a pair, so I stay with my one pair of distance glasses, and one pair of computer glasses. Surprisingly i don't need glasses to read, and can read easily without the book up my nose. I have been coming here for more than 6 years. I love Dr. Rebecca, from her punky red hair to the way she explains to me what is going on with my eyes in a way that I can understand. She like to think of prevention and find other non-drug ways to help tired aching eyes. (A warm washcloth for 10 minutes, is one of my favorite suggestions.) I also have nasty dry eye, and she did the necessary test to get me the prescription drug, that seems to be working for me. There is a wide variety of specs and I love the way that all the staff help you find the frame that works for your face, your style, your needs, AND your budget. The staff and place are friendly, professional, knowledgable, and I look forward to my yearly appointments when i can see Dr. Rebecca's spikes, and get new glasses. read more

So I choose this place because of it's good Yelp reviews and great location in SE. I went just because I just learned my insurance covers an eye visit a year. I hadn't been in about ten years so I figured I was due. The awesome: - Dr. Sarah Chewerda was the best! She was funny, informative, and totally put me at ease. She explained everything she did and told me everything she was seeing. - The place was clean, warm, and comfortable. - The paperwork was easy and I didn't have to wait long once I got there. - Making an appt was a breeze and they even checked my insurance for me. The slightly less awesome: - I had an 8:30am appt. I biked over and got there early figuring it was my first time and doctor's usual want you to give 10-15min for paperwork. Unfortunately, this meant I stood outside the door for 10-15min in pretty chilly weather (for Portland) because they didn't open the doors until 8:30am. Something to note for future visits. The bonus: I didn't need glasses but my insurance plan covers $150 for hardware. This apparently means I can buy sunglasses with that money! Sweet! All in all, I'd totally go back and I encourage others to try it out! read more

I was referred to Hawthorne Vision Center from my cousin and his wife, and I had a great experience here too. Every person I spoke here from the front desk to billing and dispensary was friendly and helpful. Dr. Chewerda was great, professional, knowledgeable. Best of all, they fixed a problem I've had for years: I like wrap-style sunglasses, and the two previous places I have used both told me my prescription was too strong to be put in these types of glasses (so I have put up with hard contact lenses and off-the-shelf sunglasses). This was simply not true! Mateo had it done in a few days, they work perfectly (and no, they were not some Frankenstein hack, they truly look, feel and operate exactly as they should). My subsequent follow-up visit (one for a minor adjustment) took just minutes, and when the optician saw I was waiting, stopped what she was doing to help me, even though there were already two other people working (thanks Jane). I also have terrible vision insurance, but really wanted to support a local business. Fortunately on my insurance website I found the Hawthorne Vision Clinic. I would absolutely recommend this clinic to my friends and family. Dr. Uhlig was amazing, she told me all about what was going on with my eyes, including diagrams, pictures and hand motions. I felt like I was her only patient, she let me ask all sorts of questions and she sat and talked with me for a good while. She didn't seem rushed at all, in fact, she kept saying, "Any other questions?" Everyone from the front desk staff checking in to the optometrists, opticians and other staff are caring, genuinely attentive, and thorough in their respective roles. I've purchased 2 pair of frames there, both unique and with the helpful assistance of the opticians in regards to what suits my face. They encourage you to drop by any time for minor adjustments to frames and if something isn't right with one's lenses. I have never had a regular eye doctor. I just went where ever they had an appt. available. ( Lenscrafters, Binyons, Costco) but as of now I have a regular eye Dr. and her name is Dr. Sarah Chewerda. She is AWESOME and from reading her bio on there website I see she is Canadian which explains a lot ( love Canadians) Funny, I choose Hawthorn Vision as they took my hubby's insurance, and he was in desperate need of an eye exam and it was just a short walk from home. For me, I wanted to get back into contacts after not wearing for about 7 years. My vision had changed from just needing glasses for driving, movies to needing them for reading and far away. After a thorough examination and discussion on what I was hoping for with using contacts I tried a single vision lenses with using reading glasses and mid-range glasses for work. Almost right away I knew this would not work ( what's the point of having contacts if I have to wear glasses all day to see up close). So on my follow up Dr. Chewerda listen to my issues and what I thought I may want to try (multifocal) and she did express concern that for a large % of people, multifocal lenses did not work out very well, but lets give it a try. Well long story short, on the 3rd try she hit the nail on the head and I am once again seeing without having to wear glasses. Which is great!!! So what I am trying to tell you all is the Dr Sarah took the time and was genuinely interested in making sure I got the contacts that would work for me. I wasn't just a nameless face in the mall. My husband also had a great visit with her and is currently waiting for his new glasses to come in. I will be going back and recommending Dr Chewerda and Hawthorn Vision to all my neighbors and friends and I also get the wonderful satisfaction of supporting a local business in my neighborhood. read more

I came for Dr. Love. Thank goodness eye exams are about the least stressful exams out there. No preparation, no cramming, no stool sample. You just show up and play eyeball games, really. You almost forget that it is costing you money to do, so fun is it. Well, except for the "puff". And getting dilated. You'll live. This has been the only place I've had my eyes did in Portland. I've been to two of the doctors here and my favorite is Dr. Alan Love. He has his banter down pat and keeps things moving along without rushing. He has good phoropter manner. His "one or two?" is some of the best in the business. He'll be straight with you, playa. Now, the optician portion is where I take off a star. It isn't anything to do with the staff or even the frame selection. Indeed, I'm getting my next pair here again, as I have my last 3. However, the last pair I bought, which I thought made look immortal when I first got them, have been pretty shoddy. I know I'm hard on glasses but both of the temple pieces have broken (one replaced no charge while under warranty, the other way past the point of salvaging the whole pair), the lenses pop out way too easily when cleaning, the finish has worn off in spots and they sit so close to my eye that my eyelashes touch the lens if they grow out to a normal human length. So it's a contest between disconcerting eyelash lens brushing and a one-eyed, daredevil trimjob. I put it to you that Sophie's choice was easier. They are, quality-wise, the worst frames I've had. That being said, I'll be getting the same brand, albeit a radically different style. If they do me right, I can bump this up to 5 stars. My new, non-jazzmatazzed frames and lenses will cost me $80 out of pocket with my VSP so that's pretty badass. The wait for me is 10 days and I'm on about day 7. I'm starting to twitch with anticipation. Once I get my new eyepals, I'm going to be SET. read more

I have been a customer at Hawthorne vision for over 15 years. The new owners are terrible, greedy pricks. My $700 dollar titanium (NiTiNol) glasses, about a year-and-a half old failed colossally when I pulled my undershirt over them the other day. Both bridge welds snapped, simultaneously. My Dad's lab developed NiTiNol. I am familiar with it's metallurgy. Properly fabricated NiTiNol is approximately unbreakable. 2 welds breaking simultaneously under very little pressure is a sure sign of defective welding. Nike's frames are grossly overpriced junk. The prior ownership of Hawthorne Vision was always kind enough to replace defective frames for me at no charge. Not so with the present owners. I've been buying my sunglasses from Costco for a while now. I've never had an $80 pair of Costco NiTiNol frames fail. HVC sells low quality frames at hugely excessive markup and no longer stands behind them I will never use HVC again. They have treated a loyal customer like crap and lost him, and his good will, forever. read more

They won't sell you stuff even if you bring your own prescription because they want to do their own exam and charge you a fortune!

I had a great experience here a few years ago. That was then. In mid-December I wondered if I had any vision benefits left. I called HVC and told them I'd like to come in but that it might be on Saturday and could they call my insurance before then and confirm my benefits before I came in. I thought this was reasonable and would make things go smoothly. The woman on the phone acted like it was crazy. So I go in on 12/23 (not a Saturday actually) and pick out some frames. They tell me that I can leave with them -- no payment. They say they'll bill. Silence. I call a few weeks later and ask if they billed. They then say they don't have my insurance on file. Ugh. I give the insurance information to them. I wait. I call. I wait. I call. We're now into 2015 and I'm worried that the calendar year change will affect things. I wait. Then I get a bill showing that I wasn't eligible until January 1, 2015. I ask if I can return them. They put me off. I call again. Repeat. Last week I called 8 times and my call wouldn't go through. I call on Friday and they say they'll let me know on Monday. No call today. I call at 4:30 today (2/23) they say that it has been more than 30 days and I can't return them. I could have waited a week and a half and had these covered. I could have returned them in January. Either one would have been fine. But their incompetence is -- according to them -- going to cost me $200. I don't want these frames enough to pay $200 for them! This is just not a reasonable way to treat people. read more
