Can only comment on pie as that is what are visit consisted of. I had lemon lavender. Hubs had banana cream. Yummy. Just a hint of lavender in an obviously homemade lemon pudding. Copious amounts of banana in homemade custard. A stellar cup of coffee. I am historically disappointed when I order coffee out. Definitely not the case at Myrtle's. Randomly drove to Princeton on a day trip and this place popped up on Yelp. We were hungry and decided to stop in. We thought this was a cafe with lunch but only pies were available. Pie for lunch? Sign me up. Three different slices for 3 people and a take and bake pie and they were all delicious. A cute little store. We drove 50 miles to stop and assuage a pie craving while we were tooling around the countryside. Princeton is a very well maintained vintage town with two retail areas downtown- one is kind of artsy. Myrtle's is absolutely worth a stop. All they serve is amazing pie, outstanding full-flavored coffee, and some cookies and the like. The pie crust is unusual and delectable - I am not a piecrust fan, but for this one I licked the plate. It's a short -type crust with the character of crumbly shortbread. Not greasy. Not soggy. Flavorful. We had strawberry rhubarb. A little different from others I have had - a little tighter. Very fruity. Abundantly flavored. NOT cloyingly sweet. We live 80 miles from Princeton, but man, I have been sorely tempted to head out for another slice. Or another kind. Or several. Went here on the recommendation of a sales clerk at Hoffman's in Princeton, Illiinois . OMG! Had pie for breakfast one slice ov Coconut Cream and one Slice of Pecan. It was the bomb! Went home with a fresh Apple Pie that came straight out of the oven. Took home the pie menu and can't wait to try them all. The crust was heavenly, the fillings were phenomenal. I am a fan. Really like their food, homemade and delicious. Which is something great when a person is traveling. And I would have to be traveling to go to Myrtle's because, unfortunately, I live far from Princeton, IL. But on the bright side, since my son goes to college out west, we always try to plan it so that our drive includes a stop at Myrtle's. Now, for the pies. Outstanding. Delicious crusts for starters, I want to know how they do it. And the crust is the big thing for me when it comes to pies. It is like my grandmother's homemade pies back when she was using lard in the crusts. Well, then the variety of pies is ever changing and many, many types. I love a good pie so I jumped over to read her review.... she mentioned a lemon lavender pie so I had to go. They did not have that pie but many other choices. Traveling thru Illinois and the owner of Hickory Grove Campground suggested Myrtle's Pie Shop. We arrived at 8pm wondering how fresh pies could be so late in the day. Our worries were unfounded. We ordered 4 different pies and each was delicious. The butterscotch pie tasted like my mom used to make, with one difference-the bottom crust was made with butterscotch cookie dough! French silk was creamy and melted in your mouth. Coconut cream with flaky pastry crust and creamy filling. David's Chocolate Creation was rich and delicious. Just a note to begin my review: only pie is served here now contrary to the Yelp description that says sandwiches are available. Having said this, know that the pies here are fabulous. The crust is flaky and so delicious. My husband had peach pie with ice cream. I had the strawberry rhubarb with ice cream. Both were so good (although I think mine was better)! They also had many varieties of cream pies too. There were unique combinations which someday I hope to try. The staff was so friendly and greeted us warmly when we came in. This is by far the BEST pie I have ever eaten... They have many varieties of both fruit and cream pies. My husband's father is in Garden Court in Princeton, and we have stopped by every weekend for pie since discovering Myrtles. The staff are awesome, kind, caring, and courteous. Our dog passed away today at 1:30 am. and we had been up all night with her, and coffeed out, but still went to see my father-in-law and grab a slice of pie. The staff were so compassionate and would not allow us to pay for our pie today, responding,"we got this"! Not only is the pie outstanding, but the young ladies working there are wonderful. We drive from Peoria ( 60 miles 1 way ) weekly for a new piece of pie and coffee. Best pie I've ever had, Sorry Grandma.....but they make it just like I remember from a child. Always fresh and although I don't know their secrets, but it seems that less sugar is used and the Pies are flavorful from the ingredients and dough variations. Apricots, peaches and pears are intact and not mushy, the creme pies are great am I've never liked crime pies until my wife told me to try hers, the meringue pies are 7" tall and are light and stand on their own. Don't miss an opportunity to eat a piece of pie here. It's worth the trip from anywhere. Dave and his crew are fantastic. read more

In our cross country travels we always try to eat at independently owned restaurants. Mrytles did not disappoint! It's a narrow long place with a cozy seating area in the back with a kids table and play area! That was a bonus!! My husband and I both had chicken salad and the kids and pb&j, homemade Mac n cheese and grilled cheese. Everything was delicious!!! Service by Courtney was perfect! You just do not find many wonderful places like Myrtle's nowadays. We discovered this lovely place on a cross country jaunt - by accident - and now we always time our further travels to be able to enjoy a stop at Myrtle's. :-) The service is cheerful and attentive, and the atmosphere is simply charming. The food is homemade. Let me say that again. Homemade. You don't get that everywhere. And the pies ... oh my. Their pies are so delicious! The pie crust tastes like my Granny's old style crust. Yum. I was on my way home from Iowa back to Chicago. I was craving a sweet snack so I decided to yelp to see what was nearby and myrtles popped up. Myrtles was located in a very small quaint town. It was a small storefront with a couple tables, but a huge pie selection. We ordered a couple slices of pies for dine in. Let me tell you that I was jealous that we don't have a place like this in Chicago. The pies tasted home made and at great value. Once you eat here you can never step into a place like bakers square ever again. I brought home two apple pies for family and friends. Everyone raved about them. Myrtles Cafe is definitely the place to go for the best pie and chicken salad sandwich this side of the Mississippi! Really!!!! The best pie you will EVER have! I brought Gals from the Chicago area and they have come back all the way from Chicago with their husbands just to have Myrtles Pie!!!! Now that is saying something!!!! What the hell was I doing in Princeton? Or anyone else for that matter! (Trying to eat Myrtles pie!) I was at the Wally World for work. After spending three hours there I was ready for some chow. I Yelped local eats and Myrtle's popped up. I drove right by it as the only sign is a painted window and a picture of the women on the door. I was greeted and told to have a seat. A drink and menu were lickity split. I didn't hear a soda gun, and there wasn't any pulp in the lemonade. But it was quite tasty for $1.99. I had the reuben on marble rye. It came with cucumber salad that was homemade. It was ok, but they didn't bother peeling the cucumbers and there were big chunks of onion floating around it. The reuben was just average and on the small side for $7.99. I did have a piece of brownie bottom banana pie. It was delicious, but not for $3.99. I thought homemade pie slices at the Blues Café in Kankakee were expensive at just under 3 bucks. The rent in the place that has been here since the 50's cannot be that much. And the décor came with the place. They don't have a fryer and I don't see any modern conveniences behind the counter. Am I paying for the atmosphere. I guess that's the price of home cooking in a town that has a Walmart. read more

We literally stumbled across Myrtle's 2-3 years ago and QUICKLY became regulars (we live 30 min. away). David and the rest of the staff are awesome! Friendly, attentive, they make you feel at home and like you're part of the family just stopped by to say hello. Lunch is served from 10:30 am -2:00 pm (pretty much always have quiches & soups on the "Specials" board, but also other wonderful offerings on the menu.) and from 2:00 pm until closing it's just pie & coffee (unless you go late in in the day, you'll have your choice of at least 10-12 different varieties of pies, cream &/or fruit). WHENEVER you decide to go you won't be disappointed! BUT if you're "city-fied" and snobby and just looking to leave a pretentious Yelp! review mocking a nice small town cafe......please move along as Myrtle's does not deserve your snobbery! If you're looking for a wonderful "homemade from scratch, just good food" meal from beginning to end that reminds you of your mom's or grandma's or favorite aunt's....right down to the mismatched dishes and silverware.....you WILL be glad you stopped at Myrtle's!
