First when you walk in- the aroma- subtle but you're hooked. I'm not one of those huge chocolate fans that go around saying chocolate is its own food group. Came here because the line at Sift, which is just down the street, was super long and was just looking to get some coffee. Service was quick and there was no line when we came, and the coffee was good! There are some seating inside and outside, so we sat outside and enjoyed our drinks. While in Mystic and looking for a coffee spot, the two go tos were closed for the day. We came across the Mystic River Chocolate Cafe. This is a bit off the main road, so it's not as noticeable. This is the CUTEST spot if you love anything chocolate! The space inside is clean, with some tables, but the coffee options will blow your mind! With the summer season, they have even more cool and refreshing chocolate options. They have house made beers, beautifully crafted chocolates, a variety of specialty hot chocolate drinks. Since it was cold we got their signature hot chocolates and a latte. The hot chocolate is a must get if you're in the area. It is hot, chocolatey and piled high with whipped cream, chocolate shavings and even fudge. Yum! What a treat! Sadly the latte was a let down, it didn't have any of extravagant display and it was essentially all milk. There wasn't any coffee in it. The milk was still pleasantly warm on a cold day. As long as you have something chocolatey from the Mystic River Chocolate Cafe it is unlikely you would be at all disappointed. Absolute perfection. Loved the amazing rich and luscious hot drinking chocolate. I added a shot of espresso and it was the best hot chocolate I've ever had. This is a true bean to bar chocolate cafe. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. A perfect place to pick up that foodie in your life a different gift. The bars all looked insanely delicious. I picked up an 8 pack of truffles for $29.00. The drinking chocolate with espresso was a bit of a splurge at $11 bucks but for a special treat it was well, well, worth it. I had the affagato which I liked here. They are known here for their chocolate of course, but I wasn't feeling on spending $13-16 to see how much I would like a chocolate bar. I like chocolate, but I like vanilla and creamy flavors more. So it wasn't worth the "risk" for me. I asked if samples were available and none were unfortunately. People are nice and ambiance is beautiful. No meal type food here to pick up and go. Despite it being a hot day, I tried to order a hot chocolate oat milk because several reviews said that only the hot version of their drinks came out well. I am such a fan of this place I can't even find the right words. Their drinking chocolate is unbelievably rich, prepare for a long journey of savoring it. It's basically melted chocolate, heavy cream, and some spices (optional) garnished with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. I will say, the hot drinking chocolate that they serve in the cooler months is quite a bit better than the iced chocolate that they serve during the summer. The owner/operator is an absolute gem, very kind and easy to talk to. His mannerisms make you feel both welcomed and at ease as soon as you walk in. The chocolate bars are quite good, though I wouldn't necessarily notice a difference between them and some of the higher end mass-produced chocolates on specialty store shelves. The photo here is from February 2020 and they don't use real mugs anymore, just travel cups, so unfortunately it's not quite as aesthetically pleasing anymore. This is a wonderful local spot where you can get a huge variety of fun and inventive chocolate flavors. The bars are made in house and made in small batches. You can taste the quality of the products that they use and the love they have for what they do. When I went I bought a handful of bars for gifts and a few for myself. I also tried their icecream which was rich and divine. I need to return soon to try the hot chocolate, I've heard it's a must try item. We ordered an oat milk hot chocolate. They have a few variations of hot chocolate available. It was delicious! I was on the hunt for good locally roasted coffee, and found myself at Mystic Chocolate Cafe. A woman was stocking chocolate bars by the door when I walked in. She was very nice and informative, and soon I found myself ordering a hot cup of sipping chocolate while she kindly ground the coffee beans I had just purchased. I didn't even bother with the whipped cream or toppings and that was still some of the best chocolate I have ever had. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many organic and local ingredients in house. This is officially my favorite cafe in Mystic and I'm genuinely looking forward to running out of coffee so I have to go back in. I was excited to try this place, but it turned out to be a disappointment. When we arrived, the establishment was completely empty. The gentleman inside ignored us as we entered, he went straight to the kitchen instead of welcoming us. While we waited and browsed the menu, he eventually came out but didn't greet us. We asked about the beer, chocolate, and coffee, and he offered only a few brief words. We ended up ordering a coffee and a beer. I noticed they had coffee mugs available, but he served my coffee in a cardboard cup. I told my husband not to say anything because it was clear that customer service wasn't his strong suit. The coffee, despite being freshly ground, tasted like hot water with a splash of milk. I recommend staying away from this place. Now I understand why it was empty. read more

We stopped by Mystic River Chocolate Cafe twice - once to pick up some chocolate bars and another time to grab some drinks. X had their drinking chocolate iced and I had a green tea latte. Staff were super nice both times and their chocolate is really good. It's a bit pricey, but you do get some excellent chocolate. The drinking chocolate is super rich and very thick, so if you like thinner hot chocolates, you might want to get something else - or ask for it to be diluted a bit. read more

Their signature drink was bland, and the ice cream was...well, it seemed like powder mix that wasn't mixed to the proper ratio and became icy while it sat in the machine. Frankly I threw both out in the first garbage I saw on the street. When you walk into the place you're overwhelmed with a multitude of offerings. This is a red flag. Stopped in for some great coffee... This quaint little caffeine and chocolate emporium is off the beaten path on Water Street. We were warmly greated by the barista. We ordered 2 cold drinks. One was a Iced mocha latte and the other a sugar free vanilla latte. Both were carefully crafted and brewed fresh In front of our eyes. They were both delicious. The best coffee we have had in Mystic to date. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. We sat and enjoyed our drinks looking out into the courtyard. If you visit the area, be sure to check them out. Can't say anything about the chocolate because I didn't have any but the coffee is lousy!! Very weak- tasted like warm water. I asked for just a splash of cream and specified "very dark" and got a cup of very light water !! At the price I paid for a cup of coffee I figured I'd at least ask them to pour some out and add actual coffee but they made a new cup which was darker but not much better. Attitude like I put them out -no apology or a "no problem ". Not too friendly. I guess forgo this place and leave it to the tourist! This store seems to be having an identity crisis. On the one hand, they source ultra fine cacao and process it in house, awesome! Unfortunately, this attention to detail is overshadowed by 30% by mass sugar content, or the addition of monk fruit extracts, covering up the beauty they've worked so hard to create. I ordered a simple mystic bar and a sipping chocolate. Both had a lot of potential, but again the sipping chocolate was far thinner than I've come to expect from a premium chocolatier. I believe they *want* to be a known as a premium chocolatier, but they've missed the mark in pandering to the "tourist" atmosphere of the town. I sympathize in that $10+ chocolate bars packed with filler surely help pay a lofty rent. read more

Came across this cafe while walking in Mystic and obviously HAD to go into a chocolate cafe! Smells amazing inside because they make all their chocolate in the store! They have a glass window where you can see the action happening. I decided to just grab a chocolate bar for the boat ride we were taking later that day. We decided on the lavender honey chocolate bar and it was great! Can definitely taste the lavender more than the honey which I liked. The man working there bonded with my boyfriend about navy submarines (what else would you expect in the submarine capitol of the world) and we just had a great experience overall! When Mike and I were visiting Mystic on Veterans Day we saw the signs for this place and followed them to this delightful little alcove where the café is located. Unfortunately they were closed for the day but I have to say how much I would like to go back here. Don't miss 'em when you're in Mystic. Worth a detour before/after parking on Water St, a dessert after a meal elsewhere or anytime for a well-deserved break. Their summer special "Watermelon Sugar" soft serve with real watermelon puree and a candy watermelon fruit slice was to die for. Affogato was one of the best ever and the frozen lemonade was sweet succor in this hot & sweaty afternoon. Super nice owners and you can tell they put a lot of care into everything they do. I had the hot matcha latte, which was like any typical latte and my friend had the Mexican hot chocolate, which is said was pretty good. She appreciated the chipotle zing not being overpowering, that it was a subtle zing and that the chocolate was not artificially sweet. I have never been to a coffee place that refused to make me a cappuccino with half and half or allow me to decide how much I wanted to pour into my coffee. I thought half and half was a staple at a coffee house, it is a given. Not here. The barista made me so uncomfortable when she refused my every request. The last one.. could i order a small coffee with a little extra half and half? Response: "well how much is a little more because that defeats the purpose". I left without coffee. Just off the downtown path of Mystic River is a place that represents what many dreamers wish they could take the leap and create something out of love and passion from the experiences of life. Mystic River Chocolate Cafe presents chocolate in its finest form with many different flavor combinations perfectly paired. Given the VIP treatment, since we knew the owner's sister, we were amazed at this small shop in the coastal town of Mystic, CT. The chocolate shakes and drinks we had were sweet, rich, and velvet softness of chocolate flavor just exploding in our mouths. The nitro infused chocolate milk stout is as good as it comes with a slight bitter note paired along with a sweetness into a light body and then finishing with a creamy chocolaty flavor on the back end. This is easily one of the best milk stouts I have ever had and the nitro along with the chocolate in the beer comes together perfectly. Taking several of their chocolate bars home I will say the rum infused chocolate bar is this complex flavor profile of sweet bitter chocolate with a caramelization sweetness of the rum combining to make a perfect fix of chocolate for all the sweet tooth fans. We look forward to trying out the many different bars we brought home. Mystic River Chocolate Cafe is a chocolate lover's dream with a personal touch that should be visited by everyone. Hot chocolate is good but the atmosphere is tense. After placing an order for six items along four people we received only five of the items. Since I had chosen a text receipt, which failed to arrive I couldnt check on the order so I asked about the missing hot chocolate. A snippy older blonde slammed the receipt onto the table and told me I might have asked for it but I wasn't charged. But I can charge you now and make it. (As if I'd spend another penny in that shop). Part of a good coffee/chocolate shop is the atmosphere and this one is angry. So If your looking fir some anger on the side of your hot chocolate head there otherwise stay away. read more
