    Mystic breakfast sandwich

Just stopped for a quick to-go order and it was an experience. We ordered two Mystic breakfast sandwiches with bacon. Not much to look at but we were very pleased because the egg was freshly cooked, the cheese was melty, bacon was crisp without being over done, and the bun was soft and fluffy. Flat white was classic and the drip coffee was hot! 10 out of 10 would go there again. Even though the staff warned us that the wait would be 15 minutes, food was out in 5!

If you like trains and are looking for a comfortable place to gather with friends and have a bite to eat, check it out. The outdoor seating is generous and looks comfy. This is right by the Amtrak line so you may be graced by the train during your visit. It is clean and appears well cared for. We found the service to be fine. Now for food: we had the Irish omelette, herbed scrambled eggs, the breakfast burrito, and an iced caramel macchiato. We found the servings to be generous. Daughter loved her burrito, it was huge and made with a sun dried tomato burrito. Quite flavorful. Son enjoyed his Irish omelette (filled w/corned beef, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese). This was not as greasy as I was expecting and the filling was a tasty combination. The scrambled eggs w/herbs were not on the same level as the other dishes by a long shot. They were simply scrambled eggs with dried Italian herbs. A switch to fresh herbs could deliver a winner but the dried herbs did not deliver on flavor. However, the potatoes were well done and not overly greasy. Daughter also did have a caramel macchiato that she liked a lot. Know that they cook light on salt here. This is actually a benefit for anyone watching their sodium intake. When our food was brought out, we were made aware of where the salt and pepper were if we needed it. Based on the eggs with herbs I would have said three stars but considering the reports from others in the group I am going with a four.

Cute breakfast place. Not a big menu but food was good. We sat out back on a sweet patio and watched the trains go by.

A down to earth quiet cafe located in the Amtrak Mystic Depot. Nice portions cooked to order. Everything was very fresh and the service was great! You would never expect to find this place in a small Amtrak station, but it may in fact be one of the best breakfast spots in the area. My Irish omelette was amazing. Three eggs filled with corned beef hash and cheese with a side of crispy potatoes. It was a wintery morning so the fireplace made for a delightfully warm cozy feel. Plenty of parking. This place is a gem!

Met up with friends here at the end of a vacation with kids ages 6,5,3,2,6mo who love trains. This restaurant was cute and cozy inside (not the place for our large party to spread out). We found a large table on the patio which was clean and lovely. The food was excellent, I had the commuter (egg and cheese) and my Kids enjoyed different varieties of pancakes which were fluffy and delicious! The best part was the trains going past!

Solid service, solid brew, indoor seating, outdoor too. Decor is themed, transportation, appropriate, for a train station. I hear a griddle click clacking away so I'd guess the eggs are made this way. Steady stream of people stumble in a table of ladies, a chattery din. Man, the eggs smell just like my mom's. Buttery, fried, the scent brings me calm. Sipping, staring, I'm waking up, just in time for the bottom of my cup.

    Some adorable seating

There were a lot of intriguing options to choose from. I had the chilaquiles ($15) and a Cacio Pepe doughnut ($4). The chilaquiles had corn tortilla chips, salsa Verde, salsa Macha, cotija, white onion, cilantro, and a fried egg. The chips appeared to be homemade, and they were tremendous along with the salsa Verde and Macha. There was a nice kick to the salsas and a perfect crunch from the chips. However, it just felt like the dish was mostly chips. I felt like more toppings could be added or an additional egg. The fried egg was also a little overcooked, guess when ordering, we could have specified how we wanted it to be cooked. The doughnut was okay. The sourdough base was very solid, but essentially just a lot of cheese on top. I was not sure what to expect regarding this type of doughnut, but this was the least optimal choice. Will I go back? I would.

You don't often see real smokers in the back with pit masters smoking the meats. so here's my feedback. 1 out of 10 Portion size- 10 by far one of the best barbecue restaurants for portions. Ribs 5. Understand these ribs were cooked absolutely perfectly. Tender moist fantastic smoking ring. I'm only giving them a five because they had a slight cherry taste to them and this is a personal preference. I don't care for cherry in my pork. Brisket 7 I requested a cut from the point of the brisket and not the flat. I got the flat and it was borderline dry. However the flavor was spectacular. I think it may have just been in the warmer just a little too long. Sausage 3 again the sausage was smoked to perfection. But unfortunately, I could not taste any sausage at all only spice. The sausage needs to be the star of the show and the spice to be a compliment. Brisket mac & cheese- 9 nice size chunks of brisket in a nice creamy mac & cheese fantastic. Beans- 1 I'm sorry but the beans had zero smoke flavor and it kind of tasted like they came right out of the can. A good barbecue place like this I know they can do much much better with their beans. Corn bread - 10 the cornbread came with my meal and it was absolutely perfect. A nice little crust on the outside soft and moist on the inside unbelievably perfectly cooked. This is one absolutely fantastic restaurant and I was very, very impressed with the quality of smoked meat they are producing. This restaurant is employing true Pitt masters who know what the heck they're doing with their pits. It's nice to see a taste of Texas in Connecticut.

Since Pasta was in the name, I figured it might be more of a market than a grinder shop and I decided to visit. It was actually more of a grinder shop that sold some fresh pasta and sauces and things that you would expect a grinder shop to have. I honestly thought about walking out without buying anything, but I kept thinking about that awesome looking Italian Trio (basically like an Italian Combo) grinder. I decided to order a small, take some pics and a couple of bites, and save the rest for later since I had lunch plans. This grinder was my ideal Italian Combo. First off, the small was huge. Full size at most places. I ate it over the course of two days. I ordered it with lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, cucumbers, provolone, Oil and Vinegar, Salt and Pepper, and Mayo. The three meats were pepperoni, Genoa salami and capicola. The bread was good, fresh and up to the job of holding the ingredients. There were about six slices of meats, but they folded them around the inside of the bun (cut on one side) so you were really getting about 12 layers in each bite. And the inside was stuffed with the veggies and other toppings. So stuffed that the toppings fell out as you were taking bites. But that was actually great from my perspective, because you could just pick up the fallen toppings and put them exactly where you were going to bite next. I've been to a lot of highly rated grinder shops in CT. I don't think I've had a better Italian combo. The ingredients were all great. It was a well constructed sandwich. You got bits and pieces of most of the stuff in each bite. Ingredients were in the right proportion. It was salty. Acidic. Juicy. Great contrasting textures. This was a text book Italian Combo Grinder. Now if you live near Mystic, getting a grinder from Pasta Fresca is a no brainer because you can take it home. If you're not from the Mystic area, there was a bit of seating. Seating may be hit or miss though. In any event, if you can figure out where you're going to eat the Italian Trio, you're going to love it. Can't believe I've never heard of this place. 5 Stars

They seated us right away! I love the vibes of the place, it's beautiful and inviting, but not pretentious. Our waitress was the best. She knew it was our anniversary and gave us a little bubbly to toast to. We also made it for happy hour (5 pm - 6 pm on weekdays, and 5 pm - 6 pm on weekends only at the bar)! All the small plates on the left side of the menu were half off! We immediately ordered drinks (the $10 happy hour cocktail - a blackberry bourbon smash for my husband, and a mocktail for me). We then ordered the shishito peppers, 2 of the pickled beet deviled eggs, and the roasted oysters with chili oil. They came out super fast, and it was delicious. The shishitos had that great char flavor along with a great dipping sauce. You can never go wrong with deviled eggs. Then we decided to order the fried oysters and the bread with corn butter. The fried oysters were the star of the small plates. Cooked so well. Freshly fried, you bite into it and it was juicy and delicious on the inside. Just so good. The bread and butter? Ugh, my dream butter and bread. Just so delicious. The butter was slightly sweet from the corn and had flakes of sea salt on tip, making it the perfect sweet and salty combo. We also got the salad (local produce!), and our waitress knew we were sharing ao she had the kitchen put it on 2 plates. Such a great touch. The salad was fantastic. After eating lobster rolls for a day, this was a much needed salad. It was refreshing, bright, and light! For our main entrees, we got the seared local squid and the strip steak. It was INCREDIBLE. Everything had so much flavor. The squid was cooked well, wasnt chewy. Just delicious. The crispy rice was the BEST THING I HAVE EVER EATEN. I wish we could order bowls of it. My husband finished it, couldn't get enough of it. The steak was fantastic as well. The potato with the bearnise sauce was so dreamy. The little onions on the steak, all the little touches were so well done. We knew we had to get dessert. We got a scoop of the black raspberry ice cream, a scoop of corn and blueberry swirl ice cream, and the lavender honey panna cotta. Guys. You 100% must get dessert. The corn blueberry ice cream was unreal. I dont know how you get all that flavor into ice cream. They dont skimp on the honey on the panna cotta. And it went so well with the more mild panna cotta. The black raspberry was a little icy because they froze whole blackberries in it, but at least you know they were trying to make sure you got blackberries in there. With happy hour, the bill wasn't too bad. This was hands down our favorite meal of our week long road trip. I can't wait to come back. I would 100% make a detour to eat here. Parking is pretty difficult around here. I would probably just Uber if I was coming here on a weekend. I need to come here for breakfast at some point.

My husband and I got married last December. We decided we would hold off on celebrating with our family and invite everyone out from California to join us for a weekend full of activities in Connecticut and a special dinner at Shipwright's Daughter during Memorial Day weekend. We contacted the restaurant's events team to work out high level details starting in late January - to book a private room and hold a date and time. From the get go, the communication we received from the event staff was dismal to say the least. Not only did the events manager misquote the estimate for the room reservation, she came back and asked for a much higher price (up charging by an additional 30% of the original minimum fee) two months after we confirmed and discussed the date. She then explained it was due to the holiday weekend. Our date had never changed from the moment we inquired, so we would have appreciated knowing this upfront. Over the course of several months (and an absurd number of emails and a few calls), we tried to solidify the menu and wine selection and made multiple attempts before hearing back from the team. It was about two weeks before the big event when we were able to confirm a menu. It was about four days before the event that we heard back from the beverage director, but by then, my husband and I had already decided we would bring our own wine bottles, not wanting to leave it to chance with this team. I won't go into further details about the frustration we felt regarding their system for communications (they use an internal system that doesn't make it easy for guests to know who is copied on emails and who sees what). That is something I hope they will work out. When the big day came, I walked into the room and noticed there were a number of chairs missing, so I counted the chairs. They had an incorrect number of chairs for adults and not enough high chairs for the toddlers. We had requested a specific number of these chairs (weeks prior and mentioned it multiple times in writing), and I thought it was safe to assume that this was a basic checklist item for events set up. I was dumbfounded in the moment. I couldn't help but wonder what else they were going to miss or mess up that evening. It was disappointing to have our family members wait while the staff scrambled to pull other chairs into the room. From the time it took to take everyone's order from the set menu, the time between courses being served, and the attentiveness for pouring water and wine - all of it was a miss. The level of hospitality that we expected from a restaurant so recognized for its incredible food and approach to sustainable sourcing was completely overshadowed by the lack of attention and care by its staff - since day one of planning this event. Even a few of our family members commented on this during the dinner. At the end of the day, we felt like an obligation rather than welcomed guests, and that is mainly why I'm leaving this review. We had been patrons of Shipwright's a couple of times prior to this event, which is why we chose this establishment - to represent the best that Connecticut has to offer, when it comes to a dining experience we could vouch for. We no longer feel that we can recommend this restaurant. If you care about hospitality, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

This time they would focus on artisanal wood-fired sourdough pizza as well as sandwiches, salads, and other delicious treats. Named for the "back door" of the Velvet Mill, the pizzeria soon won its own accolades. My sons and I recently had lunch at Back Door. I've visited the Velvet Mill numerous times, but this was my first visit since Back Door opened. After looking of the menu, we all decided to order and share the "Margherita" (fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato sauce, EVOO) and the "CBR" (house ranch, bacon, chicken, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, everything spice, lemon, dill). After ordering, we picked a table right by the pick-up window so we could watch the kitchen crew at work. Both pizzas had great crust that was crispy on the outside and yet chewy on the inside. The fresh ingredients gave the pies some rich flavors with a nice smoky finish. I really liked the "Margherita", but it was the topping combo on the "CBR" that left me really impressed. I washed everything down with a bottle of locally-produced Hosmer Mountain Birch Beer. We were all very happy with our lunch. Before leaving, my younger son had a delicious "Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie". He was nice enough to offer me and my older son a bite. We were impressed with Back Door and hope to return in the future!
