I'd give this a full 5 star rating, but honestly the ambiance of the restaurant and quality of service are not what you'd expect of a 5 star rated restaurant. However, the food and fair value of the food definitely is. They specialize in a regional area of China and the food flavors are apparently very authentic to that area. It's apparent in their use of black vinegar, cilantro, cumin, and Szechuan peppercorns. And more subtley in pickled vegetables... like in their stirfry string beans. The portion sizes are very fair, if not a tad on the generous side. It depended on the specific dish. The ambiance is nothing to write home about - it's a very typical High street , mom & pop, old location. There's a small free parking lot in the back, and probably street parking along the streets. They have pretty vast menu, with some of their most popular dishes displayed in pictures outside and inside the restaurant. Everything we ordered was good, but some surprises included the pickled diced veggies under our fried tofu, pickled preserved radish seasoned with our stirfry green beans, and twice cooked fish (great, but probably not my favorite which still resides with Chilispot and Fiery Sky). The ginger pork chop was the only thing I was a tad disappointed with. The pork cutlets were too thin so all I tasted was the batter. It was definitely crispy & sweet though so if you like that, it's a popular dish there. I have been back a few times with different friends and family. I'd been driving by this place for years wanting to try it - and finally did. Nestled in a nook adjacent to campus, we had high hopes for an authentic meal. The experience really began before even entering the restaurant with the most mouth-watering aroma wafting down the street. When we entered, we were kindly greeted and invited to sit in a cozy corner. I ordered the cumin lamb, and my partner got the spicy chicken. The lamb was a perfectly crafted patchwork quilt of texture and flavor - the veggies were crisp and fresh; the lamb succulent and tender. The spicy chicken had the most delicate breading, and a crunchy yet soft bite. The latter was a bit dry, so we requested some duck sauce, which brought a rich sweetness to balance the spice. The server was kind and offered her recommendations on request, however we suffered severe mouth burn with only a cup of water each to last between us:,( Overall, 4.5, will be coming back (with our water bottles). Been looking for a decent Szechuan place. Gave NE Chinese a try. Ordered the spicy pork with cilantro, pork in garlic sauce, pork lo mein and the hot & sour soup. Though other reviewers raved about the spicy pork with cilantro, we found it ok. Not very spicy and pork was a bit dry. On the good side, lots of pork pieces and cilantro...spicier would have been better. Pork lo mein was ok but it would have been better with a bit more veggie crunch and maybe more bean sprouts. My favorite was the pork in garlic sauce. Very close in taste to some of the best pork in garlic sauce dishes I've had in CA. Good to see cloud ear in the dish. Green pepper was ok but I really would have liked strip bamboo and some slivered celery for more crunch in the dish. That would have made this a great dish. A bit bland bc a little more spice was needed. But I liked it on top of my rice. Sweet and sour soup was ok...a little watery not thick. Didn't see much bamboo in it. Hands down, this Chinese spot in Columbus is my go-to! It's my favorite so far, but let's be real, the dine-in experience is where it's at - takeout just doesn't compare; it was almost not palatable, to be honest (that I did not understand. To their credit they did offer 50% off our next visit) . Inside is definitely no frills, no fuss, but the food is amazing and that's all that matters to us. The real MVP is their addictive fried chili oil - it's utterly DELICIOUS! One suggestion to the owners: bottle and sell that magic in jars! I'd be first in line to buy it! read more

First off, this place is deceptive -- in a good way! NEC looks like a little hole in the wall in a so-so area of the Old North, near a couple hookah places & run-down-looking "clubs". We had a lot of doubts when we walked in; no other customers were in the place, the walls were covered in torn menu pictures, the windows were covered over with wrinkled & old menu pictures, the lone employee we saw was listening to some podcast, etc. However, a lot of folks in the Columbus subreddit had recommended it (one had commented that it was the only place her "Chinese parents didn't complain about"), so Husband and I took a deep breath, ventured further in as Employee looked up & Smiled & said "Sit where you want", and we sat down at a table. Wow, am I glad we DID. We weren't sure of the menu. We didn't want the typical American-Chinese fare, but the menu didn't have much descriptions beyond basic "protein in brown sauce" type stuff, so we spent a while discussing what to get. We finally decided on the cucumber salad, an egg roll (Husband), the Eggplant/Potato/Green Pepper (Husband) and the Pork with Sweet Bean Paste (me). Major Caveat: double-check things for the 'spicy' mark, which we both missed with the cucumber salad. The salad was GOOD, but when this place says "spicy", they don't mean "adjusted-for-Midwest-America Spicy" (which seems to be medium in the rest of the world), they mean SPICY. (Granted, my perception might just be because my guts can't tolerate spice-heat. Again, it was GOOD, but I couldn't eat more than a couple bites. Not the restaurant's fault!) However, the other two dishes more than made up for that blip. The Pork/Sweet Bean Paste comes with sheets of buckwheat noodles for you to wrap the pork & rice in, and it was DELICIOUS. Husband loved the Eggplant. Both were fresh, hot, well-made, & tasty -- and in portion sizes that had us taking well over half the order home. And more folks did come in & acted like they were regulars, so that's ALWAYS a great sign! Additional bonus: all the leftovers were just as delicious the next day for lunch. :) So, TL;DR: Don't be put off by the initial appearance; when they say spicy, they mean SPICY; and DAMN, THE FOOD IS GOOD. read more

I've had my eye on N.E. Chinese for quite some time and honestly, I have no idea what was holding me back. The reviews are great, they have several vegetarian options, and it's not too far from my place... yet still, it took me years to order... even with them offering delivery. Well friends, the day finally came over the weekend when my boyfriend and I decided we didn't feel like cooking. I mentioned that we rarely order Chinese food so we decided to try a new spot. And that's when it happened. We ordered off their website for pick up and headed there about twenty minutes later. Everything smelled so good in the car and we dove in the second we got home. We shared an order of the vegetable gyoza and I ordered the spring rolls and vegetable fried rice. My boyfriend ordered an egg roll and general tso's. We legit ate in silence, which is a sign that we are very happy with our food. And eventually, we both proclaimed that this was some of the best Chinese food we've had in Columbus. What stuck out the most to me was how everything was super flavorful. I was so glad I ordered a large fried rice because the leftovers the next day were just as good. The food is so authentic and incredibly delicious. We always get take out but you can also eat in. Although it's a bit dated inside and didn't seem sparking clean. The portions are very generous! We love having a little "buffet" of items and it makes for great leftovers. It's also packaged really well and we haven't had anything spill, the care to package is very appreciated. The food though.... It delivers every single time! The most outstanding items have to be Shanghai Noodles & Cilantro Pork. We get these every single time because we can't imagine takeout without these two. We have also gotten the Twice Fried Fish that was very good, my partner isn't a big fish fan but LOVED this dish. The fern root salad is so interesting and very unique. We don't get this often but it's a must try for your second or third time here. Fried rice was ok, not as flavorful as I would want. The Sichuan Beef dish is pretty good as well, I have had it before at other restaurants and this one seems lacking something? We recently got the General Tso Chicken as my partner loves this particular dish and it was super disappointing. This is a rather unusual restaurant in the US, featuring cuisine, as the name suggests, from north east China. This is primarily Manchu cuisine with Mongolian, Russian, and Korean influences as well as, of course, from adjacent provinces. Grains such as corn, wheat, and millet are featured as well as pickled vegetables. The hole-in-the-wall ambiance is probably why this place is still a hidden gem, but most of their business is via take out. Ordering is available online. Stay away from American favorites and stick to the Chinese "main menu" which is where the good stuff is. The flavors are excellent, and according to a friend from Shandong province, very authentic. The stewed dishes are classic as well as cumin lamb, but pretty much everything I've tried on the menu has been quite good. Me and my dad can in here for a slightly late lunch since we were in the area and it sounded good. It's a small restaurant that doesn't look like much from the outside but the staff was friendly and helpful and the food was very good. I got the soy sauce braised beef appetizer which was a very unique flavor I enjoyed. I also got the stir-fry noodles with pork which was cooked well and very flavorful (although the bakchoy was left kinda big and hard to eat) my dad got the peppercorn lamb which he said was very good with just the right amount of spice. Well that was unexpected. I haven't been on High st in Columbus in probably 25 years. Miles of bars, pizza slice places and gyros is what I vaguely remember. I did not see anything like this place back then. This restaurant calls itself North east Chinese. I've not run into that kind of description before but I am somewhat sheltered and I have never traveled to Asia. Yet. I was going to order the pork with cilantro but a lot of the reviews raved about the twice cooked spicy fish. I am adding my rave to the chorus. Crispy, spicy and just plain good. I also got the enoki salad. It was also pretty awesome. Dressed in a sweet and sour dressing very similar to seaweed salad. But the enoki and cucumber just make for a great refreshing salad. I'm looking at their menu again to see what else I want to try! The spicy twice cooked fish is worth the hype. So much umami. I think the right amount of heat, but I'd like more. I did see someone comment that the fish made their tongue feel numb. Apparently that tingling sensation is combination of spicy and numbing flavors from Sichuan peppercorn. I didn't know "mala" was the term for this sensation until I went to a restaurant called Mala. It's possible you didn't want to know that much about peppercorn, that's totally ok. Just don't be afraid to try it. I honestly don't notice it unless it's really heavy on the peppercorn. I don't get that here, I really enjoyed the flavor. I ordered using their online ordering system and my food was still hot even though I picked up later than planned. There is only carryout right now. They also have a system to transfer your card from the table up front to the cash register to help with distancing. I've seen this in videos at other restaurants and it's great. So clever. read more

If you like spicy, they can definitely do that here. I got the spicy fried chicken. It's a popcorn chicken tossed in a spicy chili oil and sauteed with jalapenos and spicy peppers. Spicy yet very flavorful. I was able to eat it without the rice. Very nice portion. Easily enough for 2, could stretch it for 3 with an appetizer or 2. I will definitely be ordering from here again.
