Some bites literally gave me goosebumps. Every dish was elegant, playful, and executed with incredible precision.

This post-COVID review focuses on the inside and staff of N/Naka. The wait staff are consistent and provide details of the thoughts in preparation. The entire menu reflects 15 years in operation and respective Michelin stars early in its establishment. At first, I thought I would still be hungry, but the tastes, quality and presentation really added to my dining experience, which was wonderful. I was celebrating an early Mother's Day on this occasion and appreciated the artful creations from each dish. My favorite was the steak, which has the rich taste of a quality A5 beef, which melts in your mouth. Next was the quality of the fish served, which each having its own story to be told. If ever you have the desire to dine here, be sure to make your reservation on Sundays a few weeks before your celebration.

n/naka is a restaurant that needs no introduction. It remains at the top of many lists--some being "Best Japanese" and "LA Staples," while others are "Must-Visit California Restaurants" and "Memorable Places to Go to Forget." I am one of the people who watched Chef's Table in its early days, which was also in my early days of being interested in food as an art form. I had enjoyed watching Chef Niki Nakayama talk about n/naka and her cooking philosophy, but at that time, I didn't really know what it meant to put in the level of work and dedication she and her partner Carole Iida have put into n/naka. I thought, "This food looks beautiful," and "I hope I get to go here someday," but not much more beyond that at the time (I was living in San Jose, didn't ever think I'd live in LA). As time went on, I began to understand what must go into establishments like n/naka. It had been ten years and hundreds of restaurants since I'd seen the Chef's Table episode, and n/naka was still a place I knew I would feel honored to be able to experience. My partner and I were preparing for our upcoming Japan trip, and I proposed we maybe try to snag a reservation here as a close to our 30th birthdays celebration. I had to try three times, but I finally got a spot in June this year. At the time, I had no idea how truly special and exceptional this night would be. So we made LA weekend plans around this dinner, a couple weeks after returning from Japan. It had been a wonderful trip overall, with plenty of delicious food, and not only did we get to celebrate turning 30 there, my partner also proposed to me at the top of a mountain. It was really an unforgettable experience. We were still on a high from it when we came to n/naka. Despite still clinging to the memories of all the fresh food we tried in Japan, we were still wowed by how good this food was. Their kaiseki-style tasting menu is a delightful blend of Japanese and Californian, and even without the surprises that they slipped in here and there for our combined birthday dinner, we were feeling pleasantly full from the amount of food. The lighting was smooth, the ambiance was relaxing, the pacing was perfect, every person we interacted with was so professional and personable, our sake paired extremely well with every dish we were served, the presentation was stellar, and everything was prepared impeccably well and tasted delicious. Delicate and bold at the same time. The highlight of the night was when Chef Nakayama came out to our table to thank us for dining at n/naka. She had brought up several topics we had discussed with different employees throughout the night, and wished us happy birthdays and congratulated us on our engagement. As our dinner continued, we saw her go to every table around us throughout the evening. It seems that this is a popular place both for people to celebrate huge milestones in their lives, as well as for regulars to have a weekend dinner. A final and lovely touch was the parting gifts they give their guests. A poppyseed pastry, a bag of tea, and a thoughtful, handwritten thank you card. I can't recommend a visit to n/naka enough! We left feeling so complete. Such a wholly remarkable experience. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in LA.

Dining at n/naka feels like stepping into a world where every detail is cared for, but nothing is pretentious. It's refined without trying too hard, and that's what makes it special. The kaiseki experience is thoughtful from start to finish, each course arrives looking like art, yet the flavors are comforting, balanced, and never overly fussy. You can really feel the intention behind every element on the plate. The pacing is calm and unhurried, and the staff makes you feel genuinely welcome. They're knowledgeable in a way that feels friendly rather than formal, and you can tell they're proud of what they're serving. What stood out most to me was how the entire meal flowed, one beautiful bite after another, building in flavor and texture, but staying true to that understated elegance n/naka is known for. It's the kind of dining experience that stays with you, not just because the food is incredible, but because it feels sincere. If you want a meal that's both unforgettable and grounded, n/naka definitely delivers.

Best dining experience I have ever had! Never felt more blown away by the food, service and kindness of the head chef at a Michelin starred restaurant. My husband has been talking about wanting to try n/naka since I first met him 6 years ago and his past birthday was the first time we were able to get reservations. From even before you walk in the door, you are treated with such personable service - with a short form you fill out with your details and text confirming your allergy details, to your meal itself, which is in a realm of its own, to the Polaroid/Instax picture they take of your party at the end of the meal, to Chef Niki personally thanking every table and wishing my starstruck husband a happy birthday to receiving a handwritten note in the mail a few weeks later from Chef Niki wishing my husband a happy birthday and thanking us for celebrating with them. We have been lucky enough to dine at 1,2 & 3 Star Michelin restaurants around the world and none ever felt close to this level of service. On to the food - while I can't describe every dish because my memory does not serve me, I remember each bite was absolutely delicious. Most of the time in multi-course meals, there's one or two dishes that make me scratch my head and wonder if my palate is just basic and unrefined if I don't enjoy it, but I didn't feel that in any way here. I enjoyed every single course and walked away satisfied and wanting to return to n/naka for the next season's course.

Ok if you have no budget for food and want the best of the best of just about anything and everything you can imagine you come here.. the staff is so warm and friendly and knowledgeable and treats guests like they are queens and kings.. The presentation of the food is spectacular but the taste and the layers of flavors is what stands out .. the omakase based menu is thoughtfully prepared and thought out every slice every taste every palate .. I wish I could afford to go again but if ever I win the lottery or .. I will this place is outstanding if you need To Experience the ultimate this is it!

I've been trying to get into n/naka on every visit I've made to LA for the last 10 years. So it was gratifying to finally be able to snag a reservation this time. The restaurant did not disappoint. It is clearly one of the best in Los Angeles. Everything from the vibe to the quality of the food to the friendliness of the servers was exceptional. With a meal this wonderful, it's difficult to name a favorite course, but I would have to say that the pasta dish surprisingly was right up there with the very best that I've had. Of course, the fish quality, the sushi, the sashimi were all also wonderful. The other thing that sticks in my memory was the quality of all of the soups from the first little taste during the amuse-bouche to the final course. Each one brought a complexity that you rarely find in a supposedly simple bowl of soup. If you can get into n/naka, I highly recommend it.

Kaiseki style dining experience with fresh, high quality ingredients sourced mostly across Japan and California. Probably one of the more famous LA fine dining destinations for almost fifteen years now. The service from the greeter to the servers was wonderful. Definitely expected at a spot like this and they delivered. The vibe was intimate and elegant and the renovated space was simple, yet beautiful. Think darker wood and grey stone tones. Towards the end of the meal, Chef Niki Nakayama came out and greeted us as well! Truly a wonderful and memorable meal! With my socio-economic background, this place for me is definitely one of those 'special occasions/treat yourself' type places. Which despite me living within walking distance for years, kept me from going sooner. I was either waiting for a good time to attempt to go, but then came the notoriously hard reservations. Luckily, I never attempted to make a reservation myself, so I was able to bypass the frustration many others go through. I was very fortunate in how I got to experience this place. A buddy of mine hit me up out of the blue and told me that someone from their party had to drop out so they had a extra spot. It so happened I ate a lot of PB&J sandwiches that month so my budget could absorb the cost. I didn't have a special occasion to celebrate, but decided to take the plunge because this would be the easiest reservation to get here and I get to experience it with a small group. Was it expensive? Definitely. Was it worth it for me? Most definitely. As of early 7/2025 the cost of the menu was $365 with the wine/sake pairing being $195 I've been told that the menu changes up often, so here's what I had on my visit (I opted for the wine/sake pairing): Sakizuke - candy cap mushroom, caviar, roasted shiitake, carrot cream, kurozu Zensai - homemade steamed tofu, ume somen, watermelon raindrop, wagyu tsukune, totate kakiage, opo squash, burrata tartlet Modern Zukuri - scallop, dill, tomato, myoga, goma tosazu Owan - hamo, opo squash, yuzu Otsukuri - traditional sashimi Yakimono - tachiuo, baby cucumber, bainiku ponzu Mushimono - kinmedai, artichoke manju Shiizakana - spaghetti, abalone, mentaiko, truffle, kaiware Niku - A5 wagyu, green garlic, black garlic tomatillo Sunomono - watermelon, aka tosaka, wakamomo, junsai Shokuji - nigiri Mizumono - melon sorbet, sansho WINE/SAKE pairings - Nanbu Bijin - sparkling sake (dry, delicious, and a great pairing with seafood or pretty much anything we had) Le Chene Marchand - sauvignon blanc Ohmine "3grain Summer's Arrival" Matsunotsukasa "Azolla 50" Junmai Daiginjo Gruner Veltliner "Ried Stein" 1oTW Izumibashi 'Rakufumai' Junmai Daiginjo Cabernet Sauvignon "China Blue Vineyard" "Catskills" Junmai Daiginjo Riesling "Morstein" Spatlese

The service here is phenomenal and is truly one of those things to experience at least once in your life. I was fortunate to have dined here at least twice. Don't let those portions fool you--you'll need space for each dish. I appreciate Chef Niki's attention to detail and artistry. At the end of the night, she stepped out to talk to us and included certain details that she learned about us during our dining experience.

Probably the best meal I've ever had in my life! Definitely in the top three. We went to celebrate my son getting into a masters program for grad school and to celebrate his 21st birthday. At $400 pp I felt we needed some reason, haha. It was a special menu to celebrate n/naka's 15th anniversary. The food was exquisite. My favorite was probably the spring ocean trout in a miso brown butter snow. They gave us a special dessert with a birthday candle. And then after the meal Chef Niki came out to say happy birthday to my son. It was a very special meal and I look for forward to my next excuse to go back!

Simply amazing. n/naka was everything I had hoped it would be, plus more: the dishes were masterfully crafted, the bites and flavors were absolutely perfect, and the service was as good as it gets. Devin, our server, was extremely attentive and fun to talk to through the 3 hour service. Niki personally went to each table to say thank you and our night ended with a Polaroid photo to take home!

This is a long over due review. I wish yelp would just let me post reviews with images only. It is probably my 6th or 7th times at n/naka. And they are still my Top 3 restaurants in LA ever since the first time I went. Consistency matters, and Chef Niki does it EVERYTIME!!! I will let the images speaks for itself!

I don't know if it's because of the female chef, but every dish seemed so delicate and made with such care. One tomato soup that left a particularly deep impression was...

    Ask the Community - n/naka

Is this a good place to take your husband for his 50th birthday?

    Absolutely!

Is it possible to get the "regular" menu (not the vegetarian one) without raw fish? Or would doing so diminish the experience because of the number of raw fish courses that would have to be changed.

If I remember correctly, there were two courses with raw fish. They might be able to replace with vegetarian dishes. They're very accommodating. I had the regular kaiseki with no meat.

How does one snag a reservation? I have been trying every week on Sunday and button mashing the refresh button up until and past 10am and they're all gone.

I had better luck getting a table of 4 then 2. So playing with party size could help, but you'd need people to be able to go! Honestly I tried for about a year off and on as well!

Is the price listed in the menu for the 13 course meal a per person price?

Yes the current price of $310 (as of June 2023) is per person. That applies to the both the modern kaiseki and the vegetarian menu.

Will my friend Ernesto enjoy this place?

Probably. Ernesto is a pretty cool dude.

What is the price per guest?

As of June 2023, the current price per person is $310 not including tax tip or drinks

    What's the corkage policy?

As of June 2023, the current corkage policy is $85 per 750ml bottle with a limit of 1 bottle for every 2 people

Hi, on your website it says Sunday 9/26 10am to book reservation. I went to your website exactly at 10am and all reservations are all sold out. I can only put down on the waiting list for 9:30 10/8. Is this normal?

It sells out fast. I got a reservation by trying right at 10am.

Realistically, would it be possible to bring our 4.5 year old? How would the pricing work?

Website says that you can bring young kids, but they don't accommodate with a kids menu or something

I have a reservation for two persons, next Friday, Jan 24, 9pm. One modern Kaiseki, one vegetarian tasting. Please pm. We can't make it...anyone want it? Thanks?

    How many? DM me please

    How much is valet?

I feel like it was $7.50 or $8.50. We found easy and close street parking for free. ;)

    Is the restaurant wheelchair friendly?

They have an ADA approved parking lot for valet but I remember there being stairs at the front entrance. You'll probably need special accommodations

Can the vegetarian tasting menu be done vegan?

    No it can not.

How much does it cost per person including tax and gratuity?

Depends on if you have your meal with sake pairing and how generous you want to tip. Average meal with sake pairing with tax and tip is between $300 to $350 per person.

Can anyone suggest the easiest & fastest way to get a reservation please?

The best way is to make an account on Resy with your credit card info first. Reservations are available every Sunday at exactly 10AM. I suggest logging into your account beforehand.

Would it be possible to order a no-shellfish course?

Absolutely! Niki and her team are extremely attentive to their guests needs and details. If you have an allergy or simply don't enjoy a particular type of food then just let them know if the reservation email and they will definitely accommodate.

Do they have bar area to only get cocktails and experience the ambience?

No this is a reserved seated dining experience with a specific time slot. Not a lounge at all. There's about 10 tables and you must put a card down in order to make a reservation. Truth be told, there isn't much ambiance it's more about the food,…

Even though I have dietary restrictions, I'm pretty sure there's going to be something on the menu that I could eat. Now when I got there and I saw the very brief menu, I was stunned and I was like, oh my gosh, I should've looked at the menu before I came here This looks like I'm about to be eating a bunch of raw fish. But to my surprise when I looked closely, I was able to see that there was a whole section of grilled foods and appetizers that I could eat. I ended up ordering: - the miso soup - the edamame - the cucumber salad (for appetizers) - sea bass - oyster mushrooms - shrimp - the ginkgo nuts Every single food item that I ordered was delicious. I was genuinely surprised by how flavorful everything was and I was particularly impressed with the sea bass and oyster mushrooms. These two dishes were phenomenal. I don't know how they made that sea bass so flaky and moist and just melt in your mouth but it was so good. I don't know what sauce they put on top of it but that thing was amazing. The oyster mushrooms were so good that we ordered two more orders of it. For the edamame, the only thing I didn't like was that it was served cold. I don't know if that's like a traditional way of serving it or something but I'm used to having my edamame be served warm or hot so that was unusual for me. The server was amazing, super attentive and very kind. He always made sure we had what we needed and there was even something that was mistakenly served to us but he took it off the bill and allowed my friend to eat it anyway so we were grateful for him. He was also really good at explaining the menu and the dishes that he liked. The vibe in here is social but a little classy. There were these ladies that were sitting to the left of us and one of them just randomly started talking to us and asking us if we were from the neighborhood, which was a little odd because... why are you asking me those questions??? Other than that the vibe was fine and I would definitely come back here again. One thing to note though is that the food is served kind of like tapas style so if you're expecting massive portions and to be stuffed to discomfort, this is not the place where that's going to happen.

They had very reasonably-priced lunch sets that were surprisingly filling. Nigiri and rolls were fresh, with balanced flavors. The Uzumaki set would have been fine by itself but we ordered a couple of rolls on top and ended up a bit stuffed. The ume shiso cucumber roll was probably my least favorite item. No reservations but worth a wait (but honestly, only ever had to wait 30-40 mins during peak dinner time on Friday once). It's a small space but it doesn't feel crammed, it's cozy and really well kept. The quality and freshness of the fish is impossible to beat. The nigiri melts in your mouth. The best part of coming to dinner here is their prefix meal options. When my boyfriend and I come together we never have to strategize what to get. I always order the Uzumaki & he gets the Uzumaki Plus prefix meals & we each get a miso soup. The ceviche sampler leaves you wanting more each time, the edamame starter is the perfect size, and with each bite of the nigiri I'm smiling and nodding my head in disbelief. You get to choose between two cut rolls with the Uzumaki prefix meals, either the crunchy shrimp or spicy tuna -- the shrimp is my favorite. We decided to try the chocolate donut with vanilla ice cream today and it did not disappoint. Now to the service -- we've never had better service. Each employee greets you with a smile, and as soon as your plate is empty or a piece of trash shows up on your table the staff immediately takes it away. I personally love eating the pickled ginger and some places can be stingy, not this place! Immediately they are bringing us more ginger, water, etc whatever it is, without us asking. It's incredible the attention to detail the staff has and they make coming back such a warm and friendly experience. The cherry on top? There's free parking in a structure attached to the building. We recommend parking in the structure over the street as sometimes there can be interesting characters outside. You know it's an amazing restaurant when you can't decide which is better, the service or the food! Go, you won't regret it!!!

No debate, no hesitation. Just ramen. I had tried this spot at another location before and remembered liking it, so it felt like a safe, comforting choice for a long overdue catch-up. We got there at that in-between hour... not quite lunch, not quite dinner. The kind of time where the restaurant feels like it's just exhaling. It was completely empty except for us, which honestly made everything feel a little more intimate--like the space was ours for the afternoon. We sat down and immediately slipped into conversation, picking up right where we left off after graduation. Life updates, little wins, quiet struggles... the kind of conversation that only comes easy with people who've known you for years. And in between all that, our mouths were busy. The ramen came out hot, comforting, and exactly what we needed. Rich broth, satisfying noodles--one of those meals where you don't even realize how hungry you were until you take the first bite. We kept pausing mid-sentence just to take another bite, then laughing because we couldn't decide what deserved more attention: the food or the conversation. Service was really attentive without being intrusive. They somehow knew when to check in and when to let us just exist in our little bubble. The music was soft, not overpowering, so we never had to raise our voices or repeat ourselves--something I appreciate more and more these days. We stayed longer than we probably planned, but it didn't feel rushed at all. Just two old friends, warm bowls of ramen, and a space that let us slow down for a bit. Definitely one of those simple meals that turns into a really good memory.

You seat yourself and they have cute little tables and chairs, music playing in the background. I went with Deluxe Mazemen, pork bao and sparkling yuzu lemonade and my coworker had the same except for he got karaage chicken which was crunchy, and the deluxe mazemen was ahhmazing, flavorful, and they give you some rice when you are almost at the end to soak up all the juicy juiciness! I got the Deluxe Mazemen and it was pretty good. It was packed with protein from the slices of chashu, ground meat, and 2 different types of eggs. The noodle texture was nice and chewy. The meat sauce was savory and umami with a good amount of heat. It could be too spicy for some people. They also give a side of rice at the end to soak up all that saucy goodness. This was such a hearty meal! I've had better mazemen elsewhere, but this spot was solid. I solo dined here and my experience was pretty good. There were also some other solo diners who dined at the same time as me. The service was attentive and prompt. For parking, it's street parking. You might be able to find some free spots if you don't mind walking a bit. Overall, a good experience here. I would come back if I was craving mazemen specifically in the area.

Service was super sweet and took care of us so well. We ordered the crispy chicken karaage, spicy miso ramen, and an unsweetened green tea. The karaage was aggressively crispy, almost more crunch than chicken, but still good with the mayo sauce. The real highlight was the ramen. The broth was so rich and comforting with the option to add more spice powder and crispy garlic. Left full, warm, and happy

Overall, it was a good experience however the Ramen itself wasn't as flavorful as some others that I've had and I felt the noodles were a bit too chewy. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out pretty fast. There is a large free parking lot attached in back so parking was really easy. Inside is pretty small so there may be a wait if it's crowded but also many people seem to get to go orders. For this visit, I chose the Spicy Miso Soup Butter Corn and added a side of beef, which I enjoyed. Ramen is always a comfort meal to me so it did hit the spot on a cold night. It was a nice dinner and I would recommend however it is not my favorite ramen in Los Angeles.

Luckily our group had about 6-8 people so we were able to try quite a bit of the food. Glapponese - Ground pork, garlic, bacon, soy sauce for pasta. Very strong umami in this. It's for when you'd like a simple pasta with meat and nothing too overpowering. Tarako - Cod roe and nori. This is another simple pasta when you'd like something with a strong salty flavor but want to mostly enjoy the texture of the pasta, which was soft and chewy btw. If you want a familiar Japanese flavor, this is the one to order Carbonara - A very familiar pasta in case you want to stay on the safe side. They still make it very delicious and creamy if you're in a simple mood for an Italian style pasta Keema Curry - This is where you start going for a more complex taste for your pasta. If you can't decide if you want an Italian or Japanese pasta, combine the tastes with pasta in curry Service I feel can be a bit more attentive. When they sat 6 of us down first, there were only 5 settings, so it seemed pretty natural to bring us a sixth set of utensils. But when we realized they missed it, we ended asked them. Not a big deal. But when our remaining two friends came, they sat them with us and brought out only 1 set of utensils, so we had to ask for it again. Just a small detail that had me a bit confused during the experience, but the food itself was great and we'd love to come back when they reopen
