I was surprised how good the Middle Eastern food was at Naf Naf Grill. It has a similar theme to Chipolte, but Mediterranean style. I really liked the Hummus Chicken Shawarma bowl with all the toppings. I'm not sure what the green spicy sauce was called but what I do know is that it's awesome! The pita you get on the side might actually be one of the best I have ever had. The "fries" were more like soggy chips and I'd recommend skipping these. The menu is a little limited and the ordering process is a little rushed (per my two experiences) but the staff are friendly, the prices are good and the flavors are really outstanding. It's quite a walk, considering how I only have an hour for lunch and there was a long line extending to the door when I arrived at 12:30pm. Was it worth the walk and wait? YES! I had the chicken shawarma pita sandwich. It was so simple yet zealous. The chicken shawarma was moist, tender, and juicy! Each piece was thinly sliced and meshed with other ingredients such as cucumbers, eggplants, and tahini sauce. To top the meal off, the pita bread was marvelous. "Meh" is right; with so many Middle Eastern/Mediterranean options in the Loop, I'm not really sure what niche Naf Naf nails best. I tried the bowl/plate option with falafel, pita, salad and rice with the spicy/hot sauce. First, an extra dollar for hummus? I always thought the extra dollar for guac at Chipotle was chintzy...Naf Naf is the new winner! $7 for this was a bit of a crime; five small pieces of falafel mixed with the other items left me fairly hungry, and nothing about this was special. Once you've been even to Roti, you would never choose Naf Naf over their food...you get more food at Roti, the food is better, the hummus isn't extra, and you get more sauces to top your food with. Love Naf Naf! Like the Middle Eastern version of Chipotle, I love that it's super fast and I was very impressed by how tasty the falafels were! They were incredibly fresh when I ordered... around 7pm on a Monday. Their chicken shwarma bowl is where it's at. Get everything, especially the garlic sauce and mix it all together. In fact, I'd compare it to a Chipotle-style place where you can see them making your food every step of the way. Its hard to pass up free falafel or schwarma sandwiches from 11am to 3pm, so I stopped in line even though it was out the door. I am always skeptical of these middle eastern places popping up because most of them are copies of the last one with just a different color pallet. Naf Naf is the real deal. The food was fresh, the pita was pipping hot, and the meat was tasty and moist. Yum! Reminded me of the quality of Chicken Schwarma you would get in Israel. While the Pita's were Delicious, they may have been a little squishy and white bready. I don't know what is, but most places can't get their pita bread right. I also got a side of falafel, which was tasty, but tasted more like a Latke (potato pancake for the goyim). It was also a little too greasy for me. Yes, i realize falafel are deep fried, but some are greasier than others. All that being said, I will be back for sure. I might just have to order two sandwiches next time. I went to naf naf three times since grand opening! I have tried the chicken schawara bowl, falafel pita, and the tenderloin pita. The food is very fresh and perfectly warm. The pita bread is made fresh there and is the best pita bread I have ever had. The line was quick as well. Naf Naf was very impressive on my first visit today. See these places downtown seem to sort of all blend together. There's so many of them now, it's hard to keep track. It's small things that differentiate and that's where Naf Naf came through on two small dimensions. I think their pita bread is softer and more "full" compared to the other places. Secondly, I loved their hot sauce. None of the other places have quite figured it out like my ultimate favorite up on Skokie. These guys have done it. Well, I definitely plan to be back again. This Naf Naf was the only open location in the Loop neighborhood for most of the months of COVID. I ordered takeout many times and was always satisfied! I still believe that Naf Naf is the best Mediterranean fast casual chain. Their bowls and sauces have much better flavor and texture than other nearby options such as Roti, Benjyehuda, or Halal Guys. I have ate almost every item on Naf Naf's menu, and each dish tastes great and is different enough from the others to offer variety. Also, as of 2021, you can get a bowl from here for less than $10, including the Chicago sales tax! That's something that most other Mediterranean chains cannot offer. The only negative thing is that I would avoid the dessert baklavas. They don't taste that good and are very expensive. read more

The new owners drastically cut the amount of food and the price remained the same. For example, a bowl of shawarma contains 85 percent rice and 15 percent meat! There has certainly been some employee turnover, and not for the better. I went well after the lunch rush today... Most of the employees were standing around doing nothing while a long line formed. When the one guy taking the initial orders tried to redirect a coworker to help on the line to address the backlog of customers, she got in his face and started yapping at him, and when he wouldn't engage, she started whining to the other female coworkers down the line, who paid more attention to her sob story about his "disrespect" than to filling my pita with toppings. There does not seem to be any managerial presence, and there definitely needs to be one. All in all, a rather unpleasant experience, though the food did taste good. read more

Naf Naf Grill in the Loop just opened about two weeks ago and my friend asked to go there for lunch. When we walked in, we could see a guy making fresh pita through a window. He smiled and waved at me. He gave us such a warm welcome that I KNEW we came to the right place. My friend explained that she sometimes splits her Chicken Shawarma and Lentil Soup with her dining partner, but she must have been crazy. It was too darn finger-licking delicious to share. I ate ALL of my food and some of the hummus and pita that the owner gave to us. I was stuffed but I just kept eating because it was so yummy. I know, right? To make matters worse, it's so loud in there during peak hours that I can't even hear what you're trying to offer me. Simply put, get some easy labels to put on the glass, so I know what you have. I also don't appreciate that with a shawarma bowl, pita is not included. At almost $9 for just the bowl, I don't think I'll be paying for a pita. So, why the 3 stars, and not 1 or 2?! Well, the chicken shawarma and regular hummus was pretty darn good. The hummus was so refreshing that it brought me back to the summer days of laying on the beach. And, no, I had never before associated hummus with the beach, but that's exactly where it brought me so no judging okay. What sets this place apart from some others is their rice. Rice... what? Yea, I know, it's only rice, but it's seasoned well and gives a great base to the rest of the plate by making all the other flavors pop! I love the chicken shawarma paired with a fluffy pita. The falafel is good also, and I like that I can just get one to add some bling bling to my plate. My issue with this place is the lack of options for sauces and the fact that they charge me extra for a little scoop of hummus, like $1 extra! C'mon man!!! You're a Mediterranean place, i.e. hummus is like ketchup to you! and you're nickel and dollaring me for it? Poor form. I have tried it, and since it isn't that great anyway I don't get it. As a student of Arabic, having studied in the Middle East and generally just a big fan of Middle Eastern food, I eat a lot of it. I had been seeing a bunch of Naf Naf Grills popping up around the city so decided to give it a try one evening while in the Loop. I ordered a chicken shawarma sandwich. The fact that they make the bread on-site is awesome and you can definitely taste the difference -- their pita is excellent. The shawarma unfortunately was soggy and a little under-seasoned, not what you hope for from something that's been marinated and spinning on a rotisserie. It tasted all right but just like it had been in the tray for awhile, then again I came just at the end of the dinner rush so it may still have been pretty fresh. The salad was fine, could do with more lemon and sumac but nice and fresh. Overall, it looked like a pretty standard issue, tasty shawarma. Can't go wrong. And then I asked for garlic sauce. You know, that magical sauce that makes shawarma, shawarma. The sauce that every other shawarma place I've been to either stateside or "over there" either just assumes you want, or at least has it available if you ask for it. Basically, kind of a critical ingredient for a traditional shawarma. The guy handing me my sandwich looked at me like I was crazy and that he had absolutely no idea what I was even talking about. Sad day. So if you want something reasonably tasty and you're in the area, go for it, but there are plenty of fresher, more authentic options available in Chicago for as much or less money. I'd still give Naf Naf one more chance to try the falafel, but the pre-fab assembly line set-up doesn't seem too promising for getting anything extra fresh or crispy. We shall see. :-) read more

While the "camel crossing" logo deserves 4 stars alone, I had to try this place after I got word that it was better than Roti. Better than Roti?!!!? (Which is apparently the best lunch in DC). I thought it was not possible but this place is a strong competitor. The bread is the bomb (SO soft) and the fries (thin like potato chips) aren't half bad either. Only gripe - no kebab meat? It's straight shawarma and falafel all the way. On the mega plus side, the hot sauce is not white girl hot, it's brown girl hot - which made me very happy. Biased toward a smaller mom and pop falafel place not far away, I'd expected to be disappointed at Naf Naf. The place is huge, the seating and décor are bland, and the process of queuing and ordering all combine to give something of a corporate cafeteria feeling. But you forget about the sterility of the atmosphere once you've sampled the food. Highlights include the steak shawarma, falafel, and the phenomenal pita that holds everything together. I'm not sure what they've done to get the pita to this level, but it surely involves some form of black magic. The king item is the garlic cream sauce. I cannot recommend this enough, as it's quite tasty and addictive, but it does stay with you for the rest of the day. I usually drink about 200-300 ounces of water in the afternoon following a lunch at Naf Naf. The lunch hour rush here can make for some exceptionally long lines, so it's not a place to hop in and out on your own. Most folks there seem to be with coworkers or friends and are making the most of the wait by chatting together. And, best to talk as much as you can beforehand, because your breath will make your personal space open up quite a bit afterwards. read more

WTF! As in, what the falafel! Hands down, the falafel at Naf Naf Grill is king. These spiced balls of chickpeas are filling and standalone without the addition of meat. It's flavorful and moist in comparison to other Middle Eastern places that tend to be dry. At some places, they taste stale since they have been sitting out for a while and crumble apart easily. This is not the case at Naf Naf Grill since they are made frequently throughout the day. The pita bread is also amazing. These soft pillows of dough go excellent with the falafel. The one set back to Naf Naf Grill is the limited number of sides. There are only a couple to choose from in comparison to Roti which has an array of side dishes to accompany your meal. Since the prices are comparable between Naf Naf and Roti, Roti seems to be the better value but the falafel and pita are better at Naf Naf Grill. read more

The shwarma seemed like cheap chicken mixed with rib meat. They only have hot sauce or tahini which I'm not a fan of either. My bowl would have been better if they added more pickles like I asked but they got all Subway on me and gave me exactly 6 pickles. I've been here a few times and it has quickly become my favorite lunch destination in the Loop. The menu is pretty basic, a few different variations of the same foods, namely chicken shwarma, steak shwarma and felafel. I tend to get the chicken shwarma salad -- you could also get it over hummus or rice -- and then add various toppings (such as the Jerusalem salad), all of which are extremely flavorful. Today I added the hot sauce and it kicked the dish up a notch. Good stuff. Note that there's a pretty long line that starts forming just before noon, but it moves quickly.
