Sushi is overrated. I've had much better elsewhere. Ordered for take out three times and every single time I was met with rude attitudes and awful customer service. Once time I called at 8:15 to place an order (they close at 9) and they weren't able to accommodate my small sushi order (so why keep it open till 9?) This place used to, again used to be incredible... This is going back 6+ years ago... A long time ago the food was on point, the sushi was always fresh, the staff has always been great back then.. I recently went back there a couple of times over the last two years or so and each time I was very disappointed in comparison to what they were.. The one thing that really bothered me the most, in their bbq eel sauce they use on some of their specialty rolls, they use tons of MSG... How or why is there MSG is beyond me.. I am sensitive to it and so are some others that I was with. The minute we hate it, we knew immediately there was MSG, so much so that I stopped eating the rolls that had any sauce's Ok as for them as a sushi spot... I would give them 4 out of 5 stars for their specialty rolls, everything was pretty fresh when I was there last. The Gyoza had a lot of flavor and was done right. So if you aren't sensitive to MSG, then try them out but there are tons of health concerns with MSG so its a double edged sword. If you want sushi and you are in the area, try them out. read more

I do not like being rushed for a meal. Especially if I have an entire hour to finish my meal, I do not need to be told MORE THAN 5 times that I need to hurry and pay for my meal. Service was fantastic (rolls eyes) after the matter of fact that I paid, but this is absolutely a NO NO for any restaurant is to make their customers feel like they need to take the entire damn sushi roll and shove it in my mouth whole. The fish was not nearly as good as other sushi places, and I don't know if it's because people around here just don't have other sushi restaurants to compare it to, but this place is over rated and not worth the 4 stars that it is. 2 1/2 stars, but I'm rounding up. We decided to check this place out after browsing through our Long Island Zagats book. I was really excited when I read that an actual Japanese Sushi Chef ran this place. I felt like I was cheating on Satsuki, my favorite spot for sushi in Nassau County, but I wanted to see what the hype was about. The place was packed at 7pm on a Wednesday night, but we were seated within 5 minutes at a tiny table for two about 5 inches away from another table. We were seated in the middle of the sparcely decorated restaurant, where people/waitresses kept walking by us and bumping into us. The place was noisy and the ambiance was less than desirable. The service was very slow...I think they had 3 waitresses waiting on the entire place. It took a very long time in between appetizers and dinner. I also felt bad for the 3 guys sitting next to us, who kept on trying to get the waitress's attention, but was completely ignored. They looked really thirsty with their glasses empty for a long time. I must admit that sushi was very good - just as good as Satsuki, but my bf's kitchen entree, nabeyakiudon was blah and meh. Browsing through the menus, I found that they had all these crazy sushi rolls (which I'm not a fan of), and not enough regular sushi on the menu. I was surprised that they didn't even have chirashi sushi, which is one of my favorites. Maybe they think they're inventive with these dumb sushi rolls, but they're dead wrong. minus 1 star for ambiance minus 1 star for service minus 1/2 star for the blah kitchen entree I really wanted to like this place and enjoy the experience, but even when the food is good, the feel of the place was not right for what I wanted. Typcial Japanese spot in LB. Nothing fancy, just your standard fair. I had the usual sashimi and plum wine. It was decent with the typical varieties of salmon, yellowtail ( which is the absolute worst fish!!!) mackerel, tune, imitation crab and cucumbers. I finally has a bonsai which is a mix of plum wine and sake together, I found it to be win in my opinion, its like a seer plum wine with the slight bitterness of sake at the end. From the outside this place isn't much, there re a lot of restaurants on this strip and Nagahama does little to stand out, in fact there is another Japanese and then another Asian fusion place within a walking distance. My friend invited me here and that was the only reason I went. IT wasn't horrible in any regard but just ordinary, pleasant staff, ample seating. There is parking in the middle of the strip so all you have to do is walk across the street ( and the parking is freeeee). Overall? Standard fare, and okay if you live in the area not really worth the 30 minute drive for me. read more

Best sushi in Nassau County. I love this little neighborhood spot, besides being friendly and homey the fish is extremely fresh. My favorites here are: - house salad with the ginger dressing - avocado salad with shrimp and crab -kani salad - rock shrimp tempura - sauteed mussels - fried wasabi pork shumai - All the sushi and sashimi are very fresh and delicious. - I love their eel sauce and can literally dip anything in it! - For dessert they have great green tea ice cream and fried cheesecake ( yum). read more

If you are in Long Beach and feel like you need sushi, it could be an option but it's not worth a long drive to get to this place. It's just a place in a strip mall on the busy main street, so it's not a lot of ambiance surrounding the whole experience of going here / being here. I am going with three stars because: 1) the service is kind of rude overall. 2) with a shortage of sushi places around, the place is packed, and it is incredibly noisy. it's uncomfortably loud and people are on top of you. 3) the sushi is okay, not that great. we had a good sushi roll but the sushi deluxe platter was kind of disappointing. 4) we had a small small small appetizer which wasn't good (the shrimp dumpling appetizer sounded great but it was just three of the tiniest dumplings ever seen -- mostly bread inside.) 5) we also had to remind our server that we were to get some other item(s) with our meal 6) the whole place closes at 10pm 7) they screwed up the bill and added an extra charge that shouldn't be there read more

This is my go to sushi place ever since my fiancé and I moved to Long Beach. Their food never fails and is always top notch. They have a two-sided menu of rolls ranging from $8-$16, depending on the level of complexity, ingredients, etc. involved. All their rolls are always freshly made and of the highest quality ingredients (even when your order take out!). If you're going on a weekend night - prepare for a 30 minute wait. They do not take reservations and it's a pretty small place. But definitely worth the wait! If you're lucky you might be able to grab a seat at the sushi bar and avoid the line for a real table. This is a down-home style Japanese restaurant. If you're looking for flashy plating, specks of glitter on your rolls, and club music... this is not the place for you. If, however, you want fresh delicious sushi and a warm friendly environment to eat in, then you found your spot! Side note: Their seaweed salad is among the best I've ever had, anywhere, ever. Does this place even need my meaningless 5-star review? I don't think so. This place is amazing. Absolutely 100% the best sushi, best Ramen, best everything I've ever had. I used to eat at a few other, random Japanese restaurants, and while those places are great, (I've never gotten sick or anything) Nagahama hits it out of the park for me. Everyone there is very warm and friendly to me everytime I go, whether I dine in or call in a pick-up order. Even when I have an order for 6+ people, they have never forgotten anything! Service is always spot on. Now, the star here, is their Ramen - It's so so yummy! It is a big winter staple for me, and the fact that it's so close by is really great! And it's relatively cheap at about $11 a bowl, if I remember correctly. And yes, everything might be a bit on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for. If you want to get that $2 gas station roll, by all means, you do you, but I wouldn't want to spend the next day on the toilet! Sushi heaven... maybe not by appearance, but by taste. For the quality of sushi that Nagahama produces, this place is a steal. Tops sushi in the South Shore Nassau County area. Hands down. Go there. Forewarning: Nagahama doesn't take reservations for 2. Even on a busy Saturday night though, I didn't wait more than 15 minutes for a table. Some of the tables are six inches away from each other, it can get a little weird. Best bet is to sit at the sushi bar. There's always four of more sushi chefs rolling, slicing, and plating the good stuff at Nagahama. Some can be entertaining for more than their impressive sushi creation skills. Servers are on point and helpful. Sushi rolls at Nagahama might cost you an extra dollar or so a roll in comparison to their Long Island counterparts, but well worth the price. I fear tuna sashimi, even though it's my favorite food. It needs to be straight out of the ocean (or off the ice) for me to love it. I can tell the difference. At Nagahama, tuna sashimi goes down like butter. Godly. My last time dining at Nagahama, I had a classic Rainbow roll, the no-name, and MJ with no rice... baussy. No rice, you say!? Nagahama is a raved about spot for sushi amongst Long Beach residents. Unfortunately, it delivers mediocrity. I had an order of seaweed salad that was decent to above average. Gyoza was surprisingly delicious. Following appetizers, I had an order of the sushi deluxe. The sushi didn't seem very fresh...it was ok, but certainly did not live up to the hype. One piece was not cut correctly and still had scales on it, which I did not realize until I was already chewing on it. This was quite an unwelcome surprise. Went for the first time last night after good reviews from friends and we were not disappointed. It's a cozy restaurant with tight seating, but service was good. We sat around waiting for our food and as soon as the hostess saw this, she confirmed with chefs of the status and let us know. Hot tea was refilled quickly as with water. Sushi itself was fresh. Spicy tuna rolls was a surprise dish...not with the usual sricha hot sauce mayo combo, but drizzled with sesame oil and chili oil. Delicious. Also had yellow tail (hamachi) rolls - and dragon rolls. It has been more than 3 years since I've reviewed Nagahama - and it pains me to say it, but today's version is not the one I remember. A couple of weeks back, my wife and I walked in on a Saturday night at 7:30 and were able to secure - seat for 2 by Heday without a wait - this would never have happened 3 years ago - cue the ominous foreshadowing music here. I'm not sure if I caught him on a bad day or whether they instituted a new policy of ordering from the waitress - but he was not taking orders from the sushi bar - the interaction with the chefs at this restaurant always made the experience much more fun. Needless to say, we ordered from the waitress - who botched my order (2 handrolls with spicy crunchy tuna and 2 hand rolls with kampyo, cucumber and avocado) - what was delivered was 4 handrolls with all 4 ingredients which cost at least twice the price of what I ordered. I ate it and the fish was fresh - but not what I ordered. About 45 minutes later, after ordering a couple of pieces of sashimi - we were asked if we were planning on staying - totally offensive to me - our meal was over $100, I was waiting for more sashimi and nobody was waiting for my table. I felt as if I was getting kicked out. Round 2 - Went back the following week with 2 friends who are regulars - ordered 2 spicy tuna rolls wrapped in cucumber (no rice) and was brought 2 hand rolls. This time - I wasn't going to accept what I did not order - I asked the waitress to bring me what I asked for and she had the audacity to tell me I ordered the wrong way. Even if I ordered the "wrong" way, at $10 plus a roll, take back the order and prepare me what I want. The fact of the matter is that she either misheard me or transcribed it incorrectly. Overall impressions - the food is fine but the service is sub-par. There is too much competition on Long Island for good quality sushi to leave upset. read more

This place is absolutely amazing! The sushi is made freshhhhh and I mean fresh... but what that means for us is a long wait time. Here's a tip: I always call in my order b/c just walking in without a reservation means you'll be waiting for at least 30-45 mins before getting your food. It's pretty far, so I usually don't go here unless i'm in the area (Long Beach)... they do offer free delivery but I'm out of their range. (sucks for me) So here's the deal: PROS: Fresh & delicious sushi, warm decor, extensive menu, friendly staff, free delivery, can always call ahead to order, RSVPs are not necessary but definitely suggested to cut down on wait time. CONS: Only one location in Long Beach, small space but very useful with seating (meaning there's not much room between tables). On Saturday we visited some friends in LB. My boyfriend and I had a craving for sushi and got a few suggestions from our friends. They recommended Nagahama and I'm so happy they did! We loved everything - the fish was super fresh - the salmon being my favorite. We also shared the hamachi kama appetizer which was so juicy, and big! I got the jake roll which was yummy and another roll that had scallops on the inside and eel/avocado on the outside - SO GOOD! I'm heading to JFK from Los Angeles to visit my family after two years. The plane's supposed to arrive at 4:37... but after a detour to Philly followed by sitting on the tarmac for 4 hours, I wind up getting to New York around 9:30 pm. My mom picked me up and we headed to her home in Long Beach but wanted to get something to eat first (since peanuts is not a meal). At 10pm, though, there's not too much to choose from. My mom suggested Nagahama, and luckily they were open. I ordered the miso soup and we shared some sushi (tuna, salmon), a crispy spicy tuna roll, and a spicy yellowtail roll. The spicy tuna roll was definitely the maker of the meal - it had some spicy tempura crisps and tobiko on top that added a lovely texture to an oft-mushy roll. The other items were very fresh too and I was really impressed by the quality. The service was nice too and the prices seemed pretty fair. Nagahama makes the freshest sushi in Long Beach NY. They have been around for years. Love the yellowtail,salmon,tuna,uni with a raw quals egg on top. Yummy. You know the place is good when you can call for delivery and they don't care to tell you to wait an hour and a half or if you show up 20 minutes before closing, they will turn you away if they want to. Those qualities might sound questionable but those are qualities you want to look for, that means business is good! I have been coming here for over 10 years and there's nothing else like it. My boyfriend and I often ride our bikes over and sit at the bar. I am in love with the spicy fresh salmon hand roll! Their BBQ eel is off the hook! I love their little toaster too, where they heat up the eel, I think that takes a lot of credit for the crispy perfection. One of the best sushi places on Long Island and definitely the best in Long Beach! They have a spicy muscle appetizer that is great, the jungle roll is awesome and the fish is always fresh. They also would cook some salmon sashimi for my 3 year old daughter which was accommodating for us, very few places will do that. The service is average to good and they are very kid friendly. Surely not the best I've ever had but I certainly would come back. Their sake selection is pretty extensive I think - and the staff is knowledgeable enough to recommend one for you. The appetizers of the Ikamura (squid) and Steamed Clams didn't wow me and I most likely would try something else next time. They were fresh though. Japanese appetizers tend to be rather simple anyways. My group had the Sashimi Deluxe - the fish was pretty fresh - I could totally taste it. Although it wasn't the best I've ever had - it was up there. Nagahama's sashimi always reminds me of butter that just wants to melt in your mouth - the salmon is killer good. The dish itself is pretty filling enough for one hungry male. The Chanukah roll was pretty impressive. Even though it was stacked with plenty of different fish I could taste them all - it had a great fresh buttery taste to it. It was quite nice and I would recommend it. Service - rather superb. Although I will say that it might have been because I spoke the waitress's native language and we talked for a while. We became quite friendly so she was very polite and attentive. I believe that you cannot go wrong with Nagahama. Even that waitress said the fish is fresh - and she was not just saying that because its her job - only she and I understood what we were saying.
