AMAZING! Not just the food but the hospitality. Kyan was as sweet as the tea. While she was busy puting together orders we talked about her family history and she wanted to know about ours. We were in town to help family move and were exhausted. The restaurant was technically only open for take out as the staff was stuck in traffic due to a highway accident; but when Kyan heard we would be taking our food back to the hotel which was more than 20 minutes away she insisted we sit down and eat everything hot and fresh. Catfish, mac n cheese, yams and greens were our favorite but the chicken, potato salad, fries, green beans, cornbread, tea and punch, AND banana pudding were equally as yummy. First time's a charm. Ordered our first meal at Nana's Southern Kitchen, which was delivered by Door Dash. What a combination. Sorry, only took a photo of the receipt and not the good. Three (3) perfectly fried chicken wings (wife was ecstatic as wings are her favorite), a great piece of fried catfish, sides of Sweet Potatoes and potato salad. As for me, the catfish was seasoned perfectly. The taste was one of the best fried catfish I've had...ever! I've had fried catfish at several local (WA) restaurants and Nana's has them beat. 4.5 stars I was in the area with some friends who live around here and we wanted to support a black owned business. It doesn't hurt that I am always down for some fried chicken so we stopped by here. When we walked in we were immediately greeted with a warm welcome. The owner (who is a fellow Microsoftie!) told us about the origins of their restaurant and the recipe which originated from his great grandmother in Virginia. We all decided to get a couple different main entrees and sides and share. My friend got the fried chicken and a couple greens as sides, I got the catfish, mac and cheese, and potato salad, and my other friend ordered some of their desserts which were chocolate and strawberry cake. Out of everything, my favorites were definitely the catfish and the mac and cheese. The fish itself was so fresh but the outside so nice and crispy. The mac and cheese was really cheesy and there is a nice large layer of cheese on top. I really liked the potato salad as well. I thought the fried chicken was good but I preferred the catfish a lot more. I thought the two cakes were good but slightly too sweet for my taste. I had the 2 mains and 2 sides. The catfish was out of this world, fresh fried, flaky, and delicious. I had a problem with the tartar sauce. They give you 1 small cup. I told them it wasn't enough. It was 50 cents for another small cup. I found myself rationing the amount of tartar sauce I used with each bite. The pork chops were 2 wafer thin pieces. Tasted like they were fried awhile ago. Not fresh. It was like pork leather. I ordered NaNa's sauce. It came in a larger cup than the tartar sauce. It definitely helped those sad pork chops. My sides were collard greens and mac and cheese. They were good, especially the collard greens. The cornbread wasn't finished. It was like dessert cornbread, sweet. And the corn mill wasn't cooked all the way which made it grainy. If you plan on eating in your car, ask for silverware. They won't give it to you unless you ask for it. I had to go back in to get it. When you cash out, be careful. They automatically set the tip at 20%. For takeout, REALLY!!! They did get me for a 7% service fee for "inflation". I randomly stumbled on Nana's Southern Kitchen while scrolling on Yelp this morning & maaaan it did NOT disappoint! First off - spectacular service. I forgot the cashier's name but she was the sweetest, super personable, & gave great recommendations. She is also the one who bakes the cornbread & man she didn't play!! So good! They have a few delicious entrees & sides to choose from. Of course I had to try the Catfish Nuggets first & they were delicious. I decided to get the 1 entree & 3 sides combo, I chose double collars greens (so glad I did bc they were fire so I was happy to take some as left overs) & the mac & cheese which also was delicious! I had some vanilla pound cake for dessert bc they didn't have any banana pudding today but it also was so good! The restaurant was more of a café setting, small & more intimate with enough seating. I've had my fair share of southern eats and Nana's will cure a craving but I wouldn't go as far as hitting the spot. When I want southern eats, the first thing is eating with your eyes, then the flavors just have to really get you to savor every bite. You want to feel the "i'tis" afterwards and just sit there recontemplating your life choices. All plating looked pretty sparse for the dollar amount paid but I can live with that considering I understand inflation - but presentation was boring and the food was okay at best. Not at all fishy or gamey as catfish can be. Simply a delicacy. The premise is simple here - there are four fried "mains" (chicken, catfish, pork chop and shrimp) and a half dozen sides. If you're a party of two or more, opt for the "2 mains and 2 sides" combo ($25). The chicken is a choice of four monster wings or tenders. We chose the wings and were not disappointed. Again, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The chef and kitchen should be commended for nailing just the right balance of dredging and deep-fry time to ensure such succulent and flavorful meat. Everything is handmade that day and the attention to detail shows as the freshness is evident in every dish. I wanted to wait a month before returning and doing an update review so they could work out the kinks in their portioning or pricing. Unfortunately, it remains the same. While the food tastes great (repeatedly), the price to portion does not fit. I think this will be an obstacle to having a steady flow of business if that is their desire. Wow the food blew us away! We were homesick for some real southern cooking and Nana's delivered! We ordered online and got the 2 entrees 2 sides plate, and we each got a piece of cornbread which was included in the order. My wife had the fried shrimp and dipped in hot sauce, and I had the fried chicken. The chicken was 10/10, flavorful and juicy! My only complaint was it was almost too much food haha. I drove 40 miles to try out this place! Very busy place so they must be doing something right. Being from the south, I was looking forward to authentic southern food. They did not disappoint!!! Everything was just as delicious as it looked. However, one word of caution. Throughly check your order before you leave the restaurant! This time we ordered 1 main & 2 sides; chicken tenders w/ mac cheese and string beans. We added corn bread. What we received was chicken wings and zero corn bread. Well, I decided to try them again even though I didn't get to take advantage of their offer of a replacement meal. The reason being is they seem to be argumentative, as seen on these responses by the owner, and I didn't feel like going back and forth with anyone today. They said my name was in a book for the future, but that was a year or so ago so I paid for my meal today. ANYWAYS, very lackluster and disappointing still. I would've given a full 3-3.5 had I received a bit more warm greeting regardless of the food. Ordered the Porkchops: Seasoned fairly well, could've used a bit more salt, but hot sauce saved it. However, holy cow, it was filled with copious amounts of oil and grease!!! I'm not trying to check out that soon. I mean it literally oozed out of the chop and the oil sat in the box, so much so, that I had to take the napkins that I grabbed fortunately, and sop it up before consuming. This is unacceptable to me and an easy fix. Although they were fresh and right out of the fryer, it would be a better option to leave them on a rack and let some of that oil drain, and then also consider using a piece of parchment paper to the box and put the pork chops on as well as lining the rest of the food. Greens: surprisingly the most flavorful thing, but overly spiced. If you don't like like really spicy greens, I wouldn't opt for these. Didn't really get that big portion also. Yams: very sweet literally mush. I thought it looked like sweet potato filling, but it had a nice taste to it. Were very hot, I enjoyed these for the most part! Mac and cheese: I happen to like a dryer mac & cheese vs. What I assume most people actually like. So the mac & cheese is pretty good to me, although it has a slight curdle to it, had some pretty good flavor and cheese pull here and there. Chicken wings: were not good to me and they lacked flavor, which was very disappointing. They were also very yellow in color, as if they used turmeric or mustard maybe? Great coating fried pretty well, but was lacking salt. And I'm not a salt heavy person whatsoever. It lacked other seasonings as well. Cornbread: Tasted fresher today, but no sweet component that most people go for in cornbread which is usually why I don't like cornbread I don't wanna eat cake for cornbread. However, this one could've used a tiny bit of sweetness, maybe. What I don't understand is why it was placed in the same container of chicken wings? Again with no parchment paper or lining to separate it. Just haphazardly thrown in there. Napkins and silverware: how am I supposed to use my napkin if it is wrapped and taped around one piece of napkin? I was not able to use it because it was taped. The tape is unnecessary and you should offer napkins. I'm glad I grab the ones I did to up all of that oil that I mentioned pork chops. So this time around, I decided to give a more detailed review and to try them again and give them a fair shot, even though I did not get a chance to take advantage of their offer for me to return and have a free meal. But I'm still not sure if I would return unless all of the things that I mentioned were addressed, considered, and changed. read more

When I think of Kent I think of Carpinito's and the Green River trail. Now I can add Nana's as a topic of local conversation. Evening Magazine did a great segment on the restaurant so I had to try this place out. They're located in the East Hill Village shopping strip up on the hill near Kent-Meridian HS. They're right next to Starbucks so you may have to weave your way around their drive thru line to get to Nana's. You can place your order inside but they'll ask for the make and model of your vehicle as you will have to wait in your car until they bring your order out to you. I had the Main + 2 sides combo: Shrimp, collard greens and potato salad. My friend had Mac and Cheese. The shrimp and collard greens were delicious! The potato salad was sweet and creamy--not something that I'm used to but a lot of customers seem to enjoy it. I tried my friend's mac and cheese and that was good too. I'm glad I can support this locally owned and operated restaurant. They're in a sweet spot where they don't have any competition and they have a loyal following. We walked into Nanas kitchen at an odd time, between lunch and dinner on a Sunday. We were greeted with such gusto by Kayene that made me think I walked into my aunt's house for Thanksgiving. We've been wanting to try this place out for a while, decided today was the day (Happy Juneteenth!) We ordered online for pick-up, they open at 11am, we ordered for 1120. Order was ready at 1120, and brought out to our car. My husband ordered the Catfish and mustard greens, I ordered the fried chicken and mac n cheese, we both ordered a side of cornbread. Each lunch was $13, and $1 for the cornbread side. Catfish was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and it was a whole piece of Catfish, not the scraps, tiny fillets or nuggets that other restaurants have the nerve to sell! Also, on the side the added a container of tarter sauce and hot sauce, didn't use the tarter, but the hot sauce was perfect on the fish. (Franks?) Mustard greens were also cooked perfect, in a container with a lid, so no soggy fish! Seasoned nicely as well. I had such a great experience with Nanas, truly out of this world. We grabbed takeout, we ordered the 2 main entree and the sides, catfish, shrimp and the whole sha-bang. everything tasted good it was so delicious. my favorite had to be their sweet tea I don't think I've had anything like it honestly. the girls inside were so sweet, we called ahead so we didn't have to wait for our food just pick up but all in all they were wonderful. I was hoping to buy this sweater the workers had but unfortunately they didn't have merch. will be back again! read more
