I was home for a visit and was missing some food Chinese food so I went there for dinner with two friends. The service was good. Our table of two became three on a very busy Friday night and the host was able to make the last minute accommodations for us. The atmosphere was busy and lively so that was a nice for us. As always the food was good. We had chicken and beef teriyaki and beef lo mein. We had a good experience there. This is my go-to spot when I have a taste for Chinese food at home. P.S. I've been coming to Nancy Chang for several years now and the food is generally pretty good. However, the attitudes of the staff and manager are what prompted this two star review. We ordered chicken with cashews that came without cashews. We called and asked for a refund. Staff said our only options were for them to re make it or for a gift card. I asked for refund again but they said no. I asked for a manager but there was not one onsite. I called back and got a manager who was quite nasty and said their policy was remake or gift card, no refund. If you have a policy like this you need to let know up front. She dug her heels in and kept interrupting me. I gave attitude back and she called me on it - but I'm the customer and she was being rude. Customer service may not be the right line of work for the mgr. She spoke like someone secure in their role as rude manager jerk, and knew the owner wouldn't care. She brought great dishonor to this restaurant, and couldn't care less. read more

We went for dinner with our kids last week. We won't ever be going again. We had more than a 20 minute wait for drinks (after the rush) , we got apps and entrees served together , we got tons of apologies and we got no offer of coffee or dessert. We complained about the wait time when we saw the drinks still on the check , he comped the kids juices and told us the alcohol was "a little more difficult". We waited so long for the check to be picked up we thought we had to go to the desk , more apologies. We stiffed him , we told him we would. We sent in a complaint , and NOTHING. There are many mediocre restaurants in Worcester , this one doesn't care if you don't have a good time.......try spending your money somewhere else. Atmosphere: When entering Nancy Chang's you are greeted by a host's table and a plethora of colors. Although dark, the interior ishas many vibrant colors and is quite a beautiful restaurant. The host brought my friend and me to our table promptly and was very courteous. Food: I ordered the combo meal which included a soup, three sides, and an entree. The spinach wonton soup I had was very good. Nice vegetables and an amazing broth. I also ordered the crab rangoon, vegetable fried rice, and the vegetable lo mein. Each side was delicious and full of vegetables. The rice was a little harder than what I'm used to but not inedible. My entree of shrimp and cashew was superb. The sauce they use was delicious and there was a lot of shrimp! Overall I found the food to very good but to be a little pricey. Service: What really makes this review five stars is the incredible waitress I had. She was very attentive without being overbearing, she knew the menu in and out, and you could tell she really liked the food she was serving. She even gave my friend and I an appetizer on the house. I am so impressed by her incredible service, I just wish I had grabbed her name! Overall I highly recommend Nancy Chang's. The food is still pretty good, but they offer far fewer options than any other buffet around, & when you buy from the more extensive menu - each item costs a few dollars more than other places do. I find the food consistently good for delivery at Ming House, albeit they don't offer some of the specialty items Chang's offers, like gluten free, but be prepared to pay more for everything. My daughter & I stopped in at Nancy Chang's for the buffet, one recent rainy day & were both in the mood for the way we remember it being, years ago. We were worse than disappointed. We were annoyed enough that it spoiled the whole experience. The food was OK, however. I have to say - the seating was so uncomfortable & the music was some horrid combination of music I thought was revolting back when they were hits - like "workin in the coal mine, goin down down, " etc, from 1966 & others from that era, which repeated in a short loop, so we heard each one a few times. I thought - for sure they hoped the few of us in there would eat quickly & go home. The waiters seemed nice. So when I take too long to decide what I want to eat from Nancy's extensive menu my Husband starts the game of Menu Roulette. Basically I have 30 seconds to pick a number from 301-359 (he defaults to the combination specials lest I pick Peking Duck). I've played this "game" 6 times now and have never had a bad meal. The bonus is that I have tried dishes outside of my normal veggie lo mein and beef with broccoli. My current favorite is number 303, Beef with Scallions. The Man is all about the General Chow's, extra spicy. Also could the utensil and fixin's bag be nicer? Simple things thrill me so the towelette, hot mustard, soy sauce, and fortune cookie are a nice touch. I can't imagine a bad meal at Nancy Chang's. Nancy Chang's is an interesting place indeed. This is a restaurant that serves Chinese style food, but there isn't a Chinese person to be found among the staff or patrons. Honestly, it's no wonder. The food is awful. I came here on a Saturday night with 5 other people. The hostess said it would be a 40 minute wait, but then about 10 minutes later she said they had 2 tables next to each other if we wanted to take that, which we did. It ended up being a booth, with a small table a few feet away. Nobody seemed to mind, as we were close enough to chat and still have a pretty normal experience. It took several minutes for anyone to come over to ask us about drinks or just introduce themselves as our waitress. Perhaps this is because there is a small buffet (very small, like 6 containers of food + a giant bowl of chocolate pudding), and nobody is ever sure who is ordering from the menu or eating at the buffet. When a waitress finally did come over we all ordered drinks (definitely check out their Mai Tai flights). I ordered the vegan "chicken" lo mien and veggie dumplings. My girlfriend ordered the vegan General Chow's "chicken" (I know it's actually "Tso's, but on the menu it's written "Chow's" - this was one of a few red flags about the quality/authenticity of the food). It took quite a while for our drinks to come out and even longer for the food. Let's start with the dumplings... They were neon green. The dumpling shell was obviously died with artificial food coloring, which was off-putting. They were mediocre at best, I only ate one I just couldn't stomach any more. My vegan chicken lo mien was awful. I mean, how do you screw up noodles and vegetables? Whatever sauce they used was way too sweet. The mock chicken was just mush, totally inedible. I had a few bites since I was starving at this point, but just gave up eating after a few minutes. My g/f's vegan General Chow's chicken was the same - the sauce was super sweet, which made the whole thing taste gross. For a dish that's usually on the spicier side, this was very disappointing. The one redeeming quality was that the drinks were great. I got a singapore sling, and the group got 2 mai tai flights to share and a few other misc. drinks. All were wonderful, and the prices were fine. I don't foresee myself returning to Nancy Chang's anytime soon (read: ever again), and would definitely not recommend this place to anyone expecting authentic Chinese food. read more

Nancy Chang's has been kind of going down in my book lately. My family arrived on a Friday night and they put us at a four person table even though there were five of us, meaning my dad was sitting a chair in the middle of the aisle in everyone's way. We quickly complained and they moved us when a new table opened up. We would have waited to begin with so this was just aggravating. I ordered hot sake and it came in a plastic bottle and wasn't hot. huh? At least pour it in a tea pot so I think it's like a real legit sake.... Also, the menu? What a disaster. Instead of a normal menu they added like 10 tabs "Vegan" "Chicken" etc. but it was so hard to navigate and then you always forget where you found what you wanted. Just put together a normal one page front and back menu where you can see everything in one view instead of having to flip through dozens of random plastic pages. We got the buffet which was indeed tasty but the options were almost all chicken. It's nice to get a few beef choices in there. And for $15 bucks kind of expensive ya know? Anyways I will come back here because Nancy Chang's does have quality food and it's so close to my parents house. I just hope they step up their game alittle bit in the mean time. read more

Disappointing. Nancy Chang's seems to be steadily going downhill. We were there for Father's Day and the waitress was nice, but our order took a very long time to come out and the food was just "ok". I went to the front area to ask if crayons were available for children and I received a very irritated "no, we don't do that". I had been looking for a restaurant that could potentially cater for a wedding party and there have been some reviews that reference this restaurant. I excitedly called up this restaurant in order to try and get more details to see if this restaurant would be a great fit for the party. I had the owner and a catering point of contact talk to me. The whole initial experience did not thrill me at all. The whole time I was talking to them, I felt like they were being very forceful and arrogant. They assumed that I should know what I want and to not ask any "obvious" questions. I had inquired about some of the basic information and they constantly tried to ask about my budget. It made me feel that if I did not mention a large enough budget, they would just hang up the phone on me. I had asked to see what kind of menu options they would provide and the response was not rather welcoming. They told me that if I did not know what kind of menu options I wanted, I should call back at a later time once I know what I wanted. They mention that they offer a wedding catering menu but did not tell us what was on it. Instead, they gave us two options. 1. Reference their online menu which had the standard American Chinese packages. 2. Create our own menu. Option 2 sounded like a catch 22 since we don't know what kind of items we can select if there is no wedding menu. The last straw that I had from this bad experience is when we had asked for a catering license. Our venue requires that for any caterer to come in, they need to have a catering license and insurance, which means that they are up to code. They laughed at me when I asked for a license and said that they did not need it when they catered at the Marriott Courtyard. I looked up the Marriott and that venue is even more strict than where I am having my wedding. Either this restaurant did not exactly understand my questions or they think that I am very dumb to have responded in such a way. I am not pleased. I have not tried the food. And I don't plan to since I have been treated rather poorly. read more

Nancy Changs really is as good as it gets (hence the 5 stars). I have been impressed with each and every single meal that I've ever eaten here, which is quite a lot since I've been eating here for years now. The food is delicious and tastes above average quality. I am in love with their general chicken and could eat an entire plate of those all by myself! I am also able to eat their crab rangoons despite a shellfish allergy because a waitress did confirm for me that they use artificial crab (it's cheaper for the restaurant to use and it tastes just as good in the rangoons anyway). My sister had her baby shower here years ago and they were very accommodating. It ended up being an absolutely beautiful shower since the restaurant is already nicely decorated. Also, it's a great place to take toddlers and children because of the fish tanks. My niece went through a phase where she wouldn't sit still for more than 2 seconds and we were actually able to take her here with some success because they are good about putting people with kids at the tables with fish tanks. All in all, this has always been and remains to be one of my all time favorite places to eat. read more

I've come here three times I believe, and have gotten the buffet every time. The staff is very helpful because, I'm a big fan of Sriracha sauce so I NEED it any kind of food I get. I always ask when I'm there (supposedly the chef has the say on it, because that's what they cook with) and they always give me a really generous amount. The buffet is really good, it's rather small, but the food is always good and stocked up really quickly. I was never really a big fan of hot tea until I came here as well, I'd normally get cold green teas from Starbucks, but their tea (Nancy Chang's) is really on point! I've never had the soups but then again I am not a big fan of any kind of wonton soups and such, because I never tried them, so that's on me. So if you're in the Worcester area and looking for a cheap buffet and don't feel like searching forever for items to be on your plate, go to Nancy Chang's. I recommend the crab rangoons! read more

Bland is the word. The pineapple fried rice is really good-- but the rest of it is just not worthwhile. It's in a neat old warehouse exposed brick wall type of building-- not exactly what I think of when I want Chinese, but the real anchor weights here are the hostesses and the servers. Twice I've gone and gotten attitude from different hostesses. The waitress on my first visit should have been serving lunch at Alice's Truck Stop restaurant on Route 66-- she smelled so strongly of cigarette smoke I couldn't taste my tasteless steamed chicken, and the second time in the waitress had so much perfume on the same thing happened-- AND she was chatty to the point of annoying. Add in the muscle shirt and backwards baseball cap crowd seated all around us-- and the screaming kids and it adds up to I won't be back. HIM: Wow! this place went down hill and fell in a pile of sh*t just like the food they tried serving. This place was safe years ago, maybe since Worcester stepped up with newer places this place just lost its appeal. On a side note, the service was horrible. The food seemed like it was scrapings from another plate. Our waitress left us waiting around a few times only to come back smelling like cigarettes, I mean like she rolled around in an ashtray. The service was bad and ashtray lady was rude. I was embarrassed that i brought my girl friend here and felt horrible. We ended up numbing the pain with a few cocktails. I was disappointed and hope they can get their act together before they get swallowed up by the competition. HER: This was my first time here and I was very excited considering it was for a special dinner with my boyfriend. Nancy Chang's is my go-to place for take-out Chinese food in Worcester. I find the food to be pretty good, but at the same time I can't recall ever having "bad" Chinese food, and they don't really have anything out of the norm. While I would still recommend them for take-out, I was pretty disappointed with my one and only experience dining-in there. The staff seemed to always be in a rush and disinterested in providing adequate service. In summary, Nancy Chang's is a good place to pick up some food for a movie night, but you could certainly find some better places in Worcester for dining out. read more

Tried lunch as takeout as I've seen it featured on Phantom Gourmet with my two daughters. I had General Chow as main dish with boneless spareribs and brown rice. First, way overpriced at $11 for a lunch special? Seems very high but then the portions were just average leaning toward smallish. Quote of the night, "what the....mannequin?!" Welcome to Nancy Chang's: the only restaurant with glowing dressed and lit mannequins standing guard at the sign. Plenty of parking, and a really lovely little location (I LOVE the old brick-and-board look, but wouldn't have had the location pegged for Chinese cuisine at first glance). Word has it that Chang's has a patio (fantastic for the summer), but the buffet looked a little lacking. We arrived at 7 for dinner on a Tuesday night. There were four other tables occupied, so our group-o-5 figured we'd get fast service (ERRRRRR! - incorrectomundo). Our server was very friendly, but it took FOREVER to get our orders (at one point I actually couldn't remember if we had ordered and if maybe that is why things were taking so long). I tried to look on the bright side: more time to chat with friends! Drinks are high alcohol percentage for few dollars (so spring for that scorpion bowl you've been saving up for). All concoctions are about 7$ (go for the Doctor Funk - grapefruit+pineapple+rum). The menu is a multi-tab portfolio; flipping from one tab to the next was a little taxing; forgetting an item on the last tab, but then remembering that it really WAS on that last tab but ALSO featured on THIS tab for x-y-reason (...all over the place). I was OVER the MOON to see these three options: DIABETIC, GLUTEN FREE, VEGAN. ....what?! Chang's solved the one issue I had with Chinese food! VEGAN SWEET&SOUR CHICKEN ($12) to save the day! The plate appeared to be half the size of the "chicken-chicken" plate (ordered by my dining companion), but was still so filling that I took half home. COME ON, Chang's....."rice sold separate" is SO LAME! 4$ if you want rice with your meal (....which EVERYONE does). When we received our bill our duo saw that our orders had been lumped in with the other three (we had asked if separate checks were alright when we put in our drink orders and the waitress confirmed that it was). Getting someone to retrieve the billet for credit card swipe took even LOOOONGER.... When we were finally on our way out the door we were the only customers left in the place (10pm). If you have a lot of time to devote to a meal, then this is a great location. Otherwise, I might recommend ordering take-out so that you can devour your vegan/gluten-free delicacy without the hassle of the "where's the waitress" game. read more

I'm so sorry to say that what was once our go-to restaurant for Chinese food has really declined. Our experiences have been fairly hit or miss for the past few years, but our most recent visit was bad enough that we will not be returning. I ordered what is normally a spicy dish, but it was bland, very overcooked, and heavily salted to the point that the crystals crunched with every bite. I asked for some chili sauce, which helped, but then noticed a bug crawling around on my food. The waiter said, "it was just a fruitfly," but given that it did not fly away, I don't think it was. The others in my party were also unimpressed at the flavor and quality of their food. Given the prices, it simply isn't worth the risk for our dining out budget. read more

Where do I start? I guess it started before we walked in. As we approached the door we walked through a a walk of flowers in bloom and greenery that told us of the love that might be inside. The hostess was pleasant and helpful. We didn't get the Dim Sum we had been looking for, but we stayed, and with the help of the best waiter ever, ordered our food which, I have no other way to explain it except to say it was so fresh and clean tasting. I highly suggest the Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, and the Pu-Pu platter was a lovely surprise as it didn't taste greasy, and again that clean taste. Their duck sauce is homemade and is that a hint of pineapple I taste? I may never know, but it was delicious. My only worry, is did my son tip well enough for such great service? I went here pretty late on a Saturday night around 930pm. When we arrived we were told thekitchen is closing in 15 minutes so we had to put our order in immediately. Luckily I knew what I wanted some yummy Chinese duck with vegs and some "spareribs" (the quotation marks are because even though the menu lists them this way be sure to specify bonein or boneless. I said and pointed to spareribs on the menu which are bonein and got boneless... The waiter insisted I said boneless when I said exactly what was in the menu. He didn't offer to fix the problem I assume because the kitchen was closed). My duck was so dry and tasted over microwaved. I took 1 just 1 bite and told the waiter. He said the most they could do was take 10% off!!! I took 1 bite!!!!! I insisted if i was going to pay for it at all I'm taking it home even if it's gonna end up in my food processor for my cats!! The spareribs and general tsao's chicken could've been sweeter but not horrible. I tipped the waiter only because he stayed 15 minutes passed closing for us. The duck is in my fridge waiting for tomorrow's feeding time for my cats. If you're looking for good Chinese in Worcester I suggest ordering take out from Chef Ho on Millbury street. I'm not one to give out bad ratings BUT. This is the SECOND time in the last 3 months I have had dinner at Nancy Changs...and have ended up ill. The first time, I woke up the next morning with an upset stomach and felt 'off' most of the day. At the time I wondered if it was the night before's dinner...but didn't think much more about it. YESTERDAY, in the early morning 4-5AM, I awoke with a very queasy stomach. As the day wore diarrhea, aching, fever was added to the symptoms. It sent me to bed for the day. 3rd day? The fever is gone, the aching is reduced, the diarrhea is still not controlled. I have not eaten anything in 2 days. I just tried some jello. It is not setting too well in my stomach. I've taken Imodium..Let's see if that can calm down the diarrhea. Again, I am not one to write a bad review, but food poisoning twice in a row is not acceptable. I WON'T BE BACK. Eaten here a few times also for the buffet and take out. Buffet is nothing special, though I'm a vegetarian so options were slim. I like the option of ordering take out online with them, yes it works, and it's ready in time. Another plus is that they offer a vegan menu with faux meats so I can enjoy the General Tso's Unchicken. Growing up in Worcester, I couldn't wait to move away to the big city (insert your Worcester joke here). I have moved out of Worcester but I'm back frequently enough to start to realize all that the city has to offer. True, sometimes you have to look a little harder, but there are some real gems in Worcester. Nancy Changs is one of them. Lots of healthy vegetarian options, definitely try the Buddhist Delight and the Eggplant and Garlic Sauce. If you're a carnivore, the Beef and Broccoli is so good. Does this restaurant serve an Americanized version of Chinese food? Most definitely, but your arteries will thank you for it! You leave the table full but not bloated. One star for our friendly waiter. He felt bad that I took one bite of all the buffet items and didn't enjoy a single one. He offered me a free chocolate cake because he knew how terrible the food was and "felt bad for me". This is my favorite Chinese food restaurant, hands-down. Whenever I'm home visiting the folks, I make sure to stop in. No surprise, today's visit didn't disappoint! The food was great (as always) - I agree with the reviewers who said certain dishes can be a little bland, but they offer delicious dipping sauces so you can make things as sweet, spicy, or salty as you like. Today we had egg drop soup and vegetable ravioli to start, with main courses of Cantonese rice with vegan chicken and steamed chicken with mixed vegetables. Everything was fantastic, perfectly cooked and served piping hot. The service was wonderful. Our waitress, Charlotte, greeted us almost immediately, made suggestions, brought what we ordered (with the correct modifications we requested), kept our drinks filled, and generally made our experience very pleasant. I can't say I've always had perfect service, but I've been here many times and only once had a server who wasn't up to par. My favorite things about this restaurant are 1) every dish is customizable 2) there are tons of vegetarian and vegan options, and 3) nothing on their menu is really greasy or heavy (even the more "Americanized" dishes made with batter and sticky sauces). One more thing - Personally I think their buffet could be better. The dishes are tasty, but there isn't much of a selection.
