We were in Altoona for the evening on our way to Erie and stopped by around 7:30 for a quick dinner. The owner and his staff were very friendly and I thought it was awesome that they took orders all the way up to closing time at 8. We got a pizza steak sub and fries, I've never had one like it and I'm obsessed. The marina and cheese covered steak was topped with lettuce, tomato, raw onion and a balsamic dressing that was to die for, definitely took the sub to the next level. The plate of fries were fresh cut and large enough to feed a family of 4. The restaurant was spacious and clean with a really cool video game table/console in the center. I also thought it was cool how the owners had assigned each menu item bat codes that employees simply scan when ringing up, very efficient. Well, I'm not from Altoona but decided to stop in and try the local flavors. I had jalapeno poppers and the buffalo chicken salad. The jalapeno poppers arrived and looked like normal jalapeno poppers, they were still frozen in the middle when I bit into them. The second try on this complex dish was an over-fried version of the first, it was how I imagine people feel when they get their tattoos redone: it's OK the first time but if you have to do it again you should just skip it. Next time I'll drive to wal-mart, buy jalapeno poppers and put them in the microwave to save myself the time of sitting at the dirty tables here. The main dish was a buffalo chicken salad: bagged iceberg lettuce+fried chicken+frank's red hot sauce+cheese+french fries. This was served on a small plate which is supposed to make it look like a big dish, although it just makes it fall on the table when you try to eat it. Finish this off with a cool refreshing soda served in a styrofoam cup to keep with the 'you've got food from the middle school cafeteria' theme. If you want to get the flavor of their food just try to pay by credit, you'll have to use their ATM to get cash and the surcharge will leave the same flavor in your mouth as their food. One of the employees yelled across the room that we might want to eat upstairs or somewhere else because they were too busy with deliveries and wouldn't be able to serve us food or get us our drinks! Nardo's is one of the best, if not the best, family owned restaurants in Altoona. Everything from food to staff is top of the line, and the prices aren't bad either! The wings and pizza are to die for, but the real reason to hit up this little restaurant/sport lounge is for the HUGE chicken salads! Weekdays are a great time to take the family out and experience the fun family centered atmosphere that Nardo's has to offer however, if the weekends are your time to eat out, then plan to get here early because this place is an absolute favorite of many locals and a table is often just a short wait away! What a gem hidden in Altoona, Pa. Super friendly staff and was my first visit. I had wings and my date had a cheesesteak we shared an order of fresh cut fries.
