I love this place! The menu is a la carte in almost every respect. Some people like that aspect, some may not. The pricing is very reasonable so don't let this sound daunting. If you'd like bread, you'll need to order it. I actually recommend ordering their traditional bread. It is tasty, large and comes out warm. Next, consider a salad. Most that I've tried are excellent, but if you're unsure about whether you want eggplant or hummus in your starter salads, then get the delicious cucumbers and tomatoes marinated in vinegar and dill. Then I always get their meat dumplings with golden sautéed onions and sour cream as a warm appetizer to share. They are just so, so tasty! Then, on to the skewers of kebabs. I always get the "lulya" which is a combo of beef and lamb that's quite delicious. The chicken is always juicy. With a starter salad, dumplings, and bread, a single skewer per person is probably sufficient, but I'd recommend two per person to be safe if you're hungry. Having visited Nargis several times in the past few years, I am happy to report that this small narrow cafe has established itself as one of the best choices for Uzbek/middle-Asian cuisine in Brooklyn. The waitresses (especially the redhead) are quick and courteous. They will help you selecting dishes, explaining what some of the exotic choices are. Do me a favor, please, just skip typical Russian menu staples that every cafe feels compulsory to add (pickled herring) or oddities from other cultures (French fries, avocado salad). Seriously, just forget it. Start with salads, where portions are meant for sharing among 2-4 people. You will enjoy simplicity of Achichuk (thin slices of tomato + onion) or Markovcha (spicy shredded carrot mixed with spices, invention of Russian Koreans). Definitely try Nargis salad (fresh shredded veggies with oil/vinegar) and fried roasted eggplants (though I think the recipe for this one was borrowed from neighboring Turkish restaurants). Infused vinegar is on every table and everyone is using it, so should you. Unless your doctor told you not to, then he's probably right. Gaze jealously as other patrons drown their dishes with acidic liquid. Soups. Well, I heard that soups are delicious and a big step up from their counterparts found in many Russian cafes on Brighton, but I haven't tried them yet myself. I wanted to save room for shashlyk, which is what most people come to Nargis for anyway: all sorts of kebabs grilled to perfection on coals. Try lamb ribs kebab - there is plenty of meat on a delicious little bone. Or go for lulya kebab (a mix of ground lamb, onion, spices). All kebabs come with homemade, somewhat spicy (more like tangy) red sauce and onions. Onions are very popular in that region, so just pour some vinegar (yep! again) over those thin raw rings and enjoy. Even better if you still have some leftover veggies from the salads you ordered earlier. Onion is not your thing? Try homemade fried potatoes with mushrooms - cheap and tasty. You should leave fries for your Big Mac or something. Don't forget to add a few more hot items to your order: excellent Uzbek meat dumplings (manty) that come steamed, dim sum style or samsa - a crispy flaky pastry the size of Tashkent generously filled with chopped meat and onion (ask for pumpkin version if you are one of them vegetarian folk). The redhead said she favors Khonim (some kind of roll with potatoes), so I need to go back and try that. And once I do, I'll pass my findings on to you. In the meantime, here's a few house rules to remember. Your bill will include 10% gratuity/tip/service charge. Don't ask me why, but it's very typical practice for a "Russian" restaurant. However, since your total will come to some unbelievable low figure, like 7 rubls and 38 cents, go ahead and splurge - give extra 2-3 bucks to the people working so hard to please your carnivore desires. Let them eat cake; which is something you may try too if you're still feeling adventurous. There are several dessert options on the menu. But I digress. Bring your own beer from a nearby grocery or 7-11 and waitstaff will fix you with some glassware. Yes, you can bring vodka, too - it's another typical practice in such places. And don't forget to order a kettle of hot tea. I usually get a mix of black and green. No Uzbeki/middle-Asian meal is complete without one because it helps you properly digest all that food you've just devoured, you beast. N-iiice (in Borat-voice) food A-ffordable and accommodating when needed to be R-eservations work most times and waiting for a table is usually not too long G-ets a bit hectic (I'll explain later) I-ncompetent service (sometimes but not often) S-olid place to enjoy with friends and family if you're a fan of food. Need I say more? Yes, I will say more. My family indulges here just about once every couple of weeks on average; and that's been the case over the last couple of years. The most important aspect to go over is the food. The food at Nargis is great. That's undeniable. Everything from the avocado salad, to the kebobs, fish, and other variety of dishes has high quality. The drinks they serve are top-notch as well. Indubitably delicacies. Another plus is that the food is prepared amazingly fast. There's never been a time where we waited too long for a dish. The appetizers show up when they need to, and the main course arrives when it needs to as well. It's almost like someone is watching us eat and setting timers (*gasp* if this is true). The prices are quite fair as well, for the great quality of the food you're getting. Now onto other, not-so-positive aspects. On more than one occasion, we were served dirty utensils. No, not just a slightly visible smidgen, but rather whole chunks of food barely washed off of the utensils. That's not ideal at all, but I'll forgive it because we find ways to replace the dirty utensils for clean ones. Nevertheless, a good chunk of my rating was affected by that issue. Another time, we were served tea that was not nearly strong enough compared to the black tea we usually get (it had barely any color and taste to it). I'm not sure that this was some weird restaurant tactic to get us to leave quicker, but I'll forgive this petty problem. Speaking of leaving quicker: sometimes, it feels like the servers want people to leave quicker so as to replace them since the line waiting outside is getting big and they want more seating. That's not the problem of the customers but rather the management/workers themselves. When I get the sense that the servers are trying to get my party to leave, we decide to stay longer just to spite them. A suggestion would be not to make things like that obvious. Another thing is that it can get a bit hectic. Plates fall, dishes spill, and it gets crowded. Some workers like to yap it up with the customers for no apparent reason when the customers are too busy eating and/or yapping amongst themselves, and that makes it even more disorganized, and sometimes annoying. The ambiance and good lighting makes up for this somewhat. So, in conclusion, this place has its occasional problems (I hope they work on correcting them based on my review), but is very well worth it. My first experience dining at a Russian/Uzbek (?) restaurant. My friends and I came to Nargis around 6:30 PM on a Friday. It wasn't packed and there was seating in the second dining room, but we didn't sit down until 7 o'clock despite being told that the wait time was 10 minutes. The hostess was NOT NICE. She was being so short with us and condescending! When we were finally seated, we could barely get through the tables. We sat next to this one big bitch who refused to stand up so we could get by. Nargis is not a large establishment. There's about a foot and a half between each table. If you've never had Russian food then you might be in for a spin. The entrees were listed in English but had no real description of what you really ordering. The waitress was of little help. It seemed like she was just rushing me rather than trying to actually help me figure out what the hell some of these dishes were. I settled on a chicken skewer, a beef skewer, with mushrooms and potatoes on the side, and a samsa. Don't let the staff here deter you from eating. Their food was phenomenal! The samsa was similar to a samosa, but large with a crispier dough. It was delicious and I definitely recommend it to anyone coming for their first time! The skewers were HUGE too. The meat was flavorful and cooked perfectly. And finally the mushrooms and potato side that I ordered was pretty good too. Everything was delicious! Before moving back, all I'd hear about from my sis and BIL was that I had to go to Nargis Cafe, this really great Uzbeki place. They raved about it. For the most part, I know they won't steer me wrong. So we went. And I loved it! We ordered a shiton of food. I don't remember all of it but do remember there was lamb plov, pumpkin samosa (like a samoa), several kebabs, trout, home fries with mushrooms and onions, spiced french fries with garlic and herbs, sautéed vegetables, nan, fried eggplant salad, another eggplant dish and possibly something else. Despite the abundance of meat dishes, there are so many good vegetarian dishes that are beyond lettuce and salads. The standouts were the trout, eggplant dishes, herb fries, sautéed veggies and lamb plov. The rest was good, except the pumpkin samosa. I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin and this didn't really do anything to get on my good side. The ambiance is great. Check out the fire pit in the kitchen. Wait staff was on the ball and even kept a good sense of humor when dealing with my dad. As if amazing food wasn't enough, we dropped just over $100 on food (including a whole trout) here for six people, walked out beyond stuffed and still had leftovers. read more

Tucked away in an area that I oft-refer to as a Siberia of Brooklyn: Bathbeach/Gravesend, I stepped off the B4 bus on a misty evening for my best friend's 24th birthday dinner. Since I had to wake up early for a volunteer thing the following morning, I thought I'd stop by, blow some air kisses, chit chat, have a few compulsory bites and politely make an early exit. Well, I didn't. Nargis is shit-in-your-pants-good. The exterior of this cafe is deceptively garish: the purple awning and interesting calligraphic font of their signs calls attention to itself. But as I walked inside, it was this wonderful cozy restaurant that had a royal family living room ambience. I was led to the backroom where said best friend had reserved a long table for the guests. At the front of the cafe there was actually a small and wonderful blend of Chinese patrons among their more Russian counterparts. Remember that Uzbekistan is in Central Asia... something that manifests itself in the food. Anyway, the food. THE FOOD. She ordered banquet. Which means I tried, essentially everything on the menu (except for the meat). Which means I did that thing where I ignored my poor tummy and kept shutting it up by eating. All the salads are good; more importantly, all the ingredients are fresh. This place gets a healthy amount of service that they keep their veggies fresh. The Avocado Salad and the Salad Nargis were good, but no real surprises there -- a good thing though for staples. The Scallions, Cucumber, Radish And Herb Salad with sour yogurt dressing was a favorite. For the Cold Appetizers, I had some picked herring and kim-chee, you know something you'd normally find in Asian supermarkets and restaurants. It gets better, my favorite edible not-so-enigma of the night was the Khonim: steamed pasta roll with potato and onions topped with tomato sauce. They arrived in large bamboo baskets, reminiscent of what you would see facing before you while eating dim sum. The Khnim itself was amazing; I had two, and they were a cross between the Russian love for potatoes and Chinese love for steamed pasta-dim sum. I can't remember the rest of the food because by this time I blacked out. But there were kebobs in large sword-like skewers that looked appetizing to the carnivores/omnivores among us, and a whole bunch of side dishes. I thought I was going to leave before 830... I stayed until right before 1. And despite Not Being Able to Breathe Because I Was the Opposite of Starving, I had dessert and tea. There was this crunchy honey drizzled pastry little clusterfuck looking thing that, upon being dipped in tea, felt like a party in my mouth. Amazing. Best of all I got to have a little alone time with Best Friend when the hours died down to reflect upon how we grew up together. That, my friends, is priceless. It's even worth the cruel and unusual punishment of the problems that arise upon Eating Too Damn Much In One Sitting.* The manager was great as well, as he came by once or twice (it takes minimalism and class to not appear as a shoulder-hoverer) to see how things were going. Wow. Back for another visit and I'm so glad that we returned. We had done takeout which I did not feel was up to standard. But I returned with a group of 4 and therefore sampled so many dishes. Two of the group had never had the cuisine before. We are all now fans. Pumpkin Samsa, Plov and dumplings with caramelized onions were the faves. Korean carrots, Manti and a fish chowder also wowed the group. Avocado salad was bursting with avocado. The bread is always delicious. A must return. Whew! So glad! They understand they are popular, high demand and people love their food. They claim they take reservations- but to be honest it doesn't mean anything anymore. The other night I went with 8 of my friends for dinner we made reservations for 8 pm and weren't given a table until 8:40pm. I noticed there was another person who was also upset that they were promised a table at 8 pm. About 3 nights before that I wanted to go there for dinner and my friend and I called ahead and asked for a table. We were told no need for your name, we have room. I don't usually write reviews but I had to for this Resturant. Let me start by saying that this was a recommendation from a friend so I decided to give it a try . We arrived at the Resturant around 8:50 pm on a Sunday evening from queens despite the fact it felt minus 10 degrees outside. A warm welcome was expected by the host but quiet didn't happen. we were walked to your table by the host with barely any welcome feeling to it. It seems like everyone was there was Bukharan which probably explains why our server treated us this cold. He approaches our table asking directly if we are ready to order without even greeting at all. I introduced ourself and said that this was our first time ever trying Bukharan food so please help us recommend dishes. His answer to that was "well it all depends on individual " that was probably the worst answer you can ever give a customer when they are eagerly waiting for your recommendation . Since the server was no help and he was so cut and dry I decided to get yelps help to order my food. The food I must say was very good. We ordered : Babaganoush ( very flavorful ) Avocado salad ( well executed ) Eggplant salad ( excellent) Pulav ( highly recommended ) Chicken, beef , liver Kebob (liver was very bland ) Manti ( very good ) Lagman (missing salt and spice but ok ) Do not order desert from there. We ordered creme brûlée and baklava. The baklava was ok but the creme brûlée was horrible. It was super sticky and very weird taste to it. This is my second time coming here and the first Uzbek place I've ever been to. My boyfriend and I ordered the chicken shish kebab, pumpkin manti, compote, lagman, and spring salad with feta cheese. The food was great and the waiters were attentive and polite. We never felt neglected the whole time. They have some interesting videos playing especially for a non-Russian like myself. This was my first time trying out Uzbek and Uigur *thanks for the correction* cuisine and now I'm addicted! The food here is amazing. I tried the Lagman soup which was bursting with flavor. The thin slices of tender beef coupled with thick noodles and vegetables in a delicious savory broth. The Lagman soup is a must try here and is now my absolute, hands down, favorite soup of all time. The meat Samsa is a crispy, buttery, flaky pastry filled to the brim with meat and a little amount of onion and seasoning will fill your taste buds wanting more. The Lulya kebab was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The meat was so soft and tender and melted in your mouth. The waitress was attentive. I went here with my family and must say that was pretty disappointed. To be fair, the food was pretty good but the atmosphere was just the opposite. People were rowdy, people on a neighboring table were watching a very loud video on their super-cool iPhone. I would have let it go since restaurant cannot control the crowd. But when people started smoking right at their tables (yes, it was outside, but still within the reach of NYC laws) and the restaurant staff didn't care about it, that was a huge turn off. Maybe I shouldn't be so critical, maybe they just don't know that they can get closed down if people in their restaurant smoke. Maybe. Food was pretty good but very heavy, very oily. Overall, I've been to Nargis 5 times in total over the span of 2 years and the attitudes of the hosts and seating arrangements sucked 3/5 while it was very obvious there were other places my guest and I could've been placed besides being stuck in a corner. Food was delivered once in 20-30 minutes to each of us: someone was finishing the food while another one was just served with their dish. One of the our group wasn't even served with the food at all! The crew messed it up somewhere and the order was never received by the kitchen, so they hadn't even started cooking the dish. The additional plate of bread took more than an hour to be served. This is delicious Uzbek food at unbeatable prices. I've had all of the kebabs on the menu with the exception of the salmon, and they are all delightful. I bet the salmon is delightful too! All the salads are yummy, but I am partial to the achichuk, which is tomatoes, onions, and dill with salt and is so good with meat juice and some leposhka (which is the yummy bread that you should order). Arrived to the cafe, we were not happy with our table that was close to the lobby reserved and requested another, within few minutes our table was changed, no questions asked. Our server was knowledgeable and guided us through the menu quickly and in a no nonsense way. We choose the grill plate shared by two, it was plentiful and prepared perfectly, Uzbekistan food is now one of my favorites, cannot say enough about it. Our server was attentive and pleasant, she brought our food in a short time although the place was full of holiday celebrators. Thinking we were too full for dessert, still ordered baklava, freshly made at the cafe, 6 of them, but they were soo good, we finished all of them. The ambience brought you back to the fifties in Russia, which was different for us. Will definitely be back even though the travel time to Brighton Beach is an hour from Manhattan. My boyfriend is Russian and we stumbled upon this restaurant while exploring Brighton Beach a few weeks ago. Place doesn't look too appealing from the outside but it's quite charming inside. Although I've never dined inside, this is my FAVORITE Uzbek/Russian delivery place of all time. It's very reasonably priced, the food is savory and the portions are generous. I REALLY wanted to give them five stars, but their delivery wait time is ludicrous at times. As good as this place is, the quoted time is sometimes so long that we passed on ordering. I think once, during peak time we were quoted an hour. At least they are usually honest about it. The problem is that once you know how good the food is and you get reminded once going through the menu, you simply won't survive salivating for an hour waiting for the food to materialize itself in front of you. Yes. It's that good. I haven't tried everything, but my favorites in order of deliciousness are as follows: 1. Salad Tashkent - the description includes "boiled meat" as the first ingredient which doesn't sound very appetizing, but wow, this salad is my favorite salad ever. 2. Samsa - the one with meat is my personal favorite, very savory and filling, although their pumpkin one is pretty good too if you're in the mood for something lighter and sweet. I dont get it. The food is just ok. Meat was ok. Salads not appealing. Sweets hit or miss. Portions are small. Seating is on top of each other. On a weekday evening the place had at least 10 kids and 3 tv screens are showing music videos that i would never let a kid watch. There are so many other places in South Brooklyn i would rather bring my money to. UPDATE Thank you for being condenscending Boris. I know what uzbek food is. I wish I could give this place 4.5 stars - the only reason I'd take half a star off would be - the long wait (while being told that the food will be right out) and the fact that they took away some of the food before we were finished (they did make up for it by bringing us a new plate). Truly, the food is delicious - amazing calf's liver, while it looked like it was promising to be a bit dry, it was most tender and delicious! The plov was tasty with generous portions of meat on top. The shish kebab and the lamb ribs - succulent! Can't forget the home made fruit punch - perfectly refreshing! The staff (most) are also very nice, welcoming, and cheerful.
