Although we could order food for delivery, my bud and I decided to walk over to place our order direct and then bring the food back to the bar. This gave me the opportunity to check out the eatery, which also sells all sorts of fun food snacks, beverages and products. There are a few tables should you wish to dine there. I ordered a half sandwich and my lovely wife wanted an order of cheese fries. I figured the half "Classic Reuben" would be a nice snack, but the portion looked more like a full sandwich rather than a mere half. The Reuben is served warm and tasty with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. The cheese fries were generously covered with cheese sauce, and fortunately we ate them fairly quickly so they did not become too soggy. Our friends ordered full sandwiches, and so each sandwich seemed like two sandwiches in size. Needless to say, they had leftover sandwiches to take home. Ironically, I do not believe anything we ordered contained any pickle, oh well.

While not the most thorough or crispy breading ever, the chicken had a medium light coating of medium crispitude. The breading had some basic seasoning, but what stood out was the chicken, which was tender for white meat (I think), and had some saltiness seemingly from being brined. The staffer working behind the counter was kind and friendly, and for chicken made fresh, it came out in a reasonable timeframe. Final verdict: while not a destination, KKC is perfectly fine for some textbook "good" chicken if one is in the area and needs something to put in one's stomach.

I never thought I would ever eat food from a gas station, but this was the only time I broke down and did. The crispiness of the skin, plus the flavor was on point! Add the biscuits, mashed taters and cole slaw and you had a meal. Fast forward to 2025, and KKC has moved from the gas station to a proper storefront. Located just down the street from The Green Mill and my favorite goat meat taco place (Birrieria Zaragoza). The chicken and biscuits are still just as tasty, they still run out of side at the end of the night, but so glad they are here. Much nicer than trying to find parking in a gas station to get chicken. The Doctor, Queen and I decided to stop in there for a bite to eat after spending several hours at The Green Mill listening to the wonder Chris Foreman on the Hammond organ. I remember when this space was a Mexican restaurant, so it is spacious with plenty of seating. We placed our order and the gentleman working the counter was pleasant. The food came up fast and was hot and delish. The side dishes are a good compliment to the chicken, if they have them. Not surprised as the gas station locations use to routinely run out of sides. Minus some missing sides, I have already been back to get food and will be returning. It's safe to say that we share his immense love for the nearly 50-year-old hole in the wall. Up until Thursday, I had two visits. For my most recent one, I ordered the Letter A , or the red hot combo. Aside from a pair of what I believe are the best hot dogs in the world, the meal comes with fresh cut fries and a drink. I confess that I didn't get a good look on the price, but I can assure you that you get your money's worth. Each of the red hots was made fresh and specific to my request. I wanted them dragged through the garden, and the kitchen staff delivered. What I sank my teeth into are a Vienna beef decorated with a tomato, sport peppers, a pickle spear, onions and hints of salt and mustard. All of which are held together in a soft bun. The dogs were paired with a delicious, abundant amount of fries. They were so good that I finished them even before the tube steaks themselves. In Chicago, it's nearly a law to keep your red hots free of ketchup and on your fries, but I ate my long taters without ketchup. That's how tasty they were. Before I forget, I should mention that there's an outdoor dining area for customers to enjoy their food at. The neighborhood Budacki's is in has gone through several changes, but the restaurant has withstood the test of time. Sadly, however, the heir to the business, Jae Lee, recently passed away. The pastrami sandwich is also huge. Not Manny's huge but almost. Manny's though has more flavor.
