They treat their customers very poorly by wasting your time. They do so by making appointments on their website but not checking the website or honoring the appointments. They also make appointments for eye exams when the optometrist is not going to be there. For example a 9:30 am appointment when the doctor gets in at 10:15. And 5:00 pm appointments when the optometrist is rushing out the door at that time. So they happily waste your time, with no appology. Not going there ever again. read more

My experiences mirror what several other people have written recently. I have been a customer at Nassau Fulton Optical for close to 25 years. In fact, I can remember that they managed to get me a new pair of glasses even when everything was in chaos during the aftermath of 9/11. I guess I am dating myself. I've had probably close to 100 lenses put into frames here. The staff was friendly and knew my kids, and I had glasses for my son made here too when he was a little boy. ANYWAY, and a big anyway, everything has changed now. The store has been bought out by some larger organization and there is nobody left except for one front desk employee and the eye doctor. The optometrist, Neil Schafran is fantastic. Top notch professional. I had an eye exam which was covered by my medical insurance except for a $10 co-pay. The doctor is extremely competent, professional, and knows his stuff. I was also happy to see that they had the latest high end medical equipment installed, which checked for retinal problem, floaters, macular degeneration and everything else. After my exam, which resulted in a changed prescription, I went to the front and asked to have my new prescription put into my old frames. To make a long story short, insurance should have covered almost all of it, but they tried to jack up the cost with the most incredible line of nonsense I have ever heard. All I wanted was a simple tinted prescription. There was an old Chinese woman being waited on at the same time as me, and her English was not that great. I felt bad for her, because they gave her the same line of BS, and ended up charging her way over what her cost should have been with insurance. When I argued about the charges for my glasses, they made up some remarkable story about a "pattern fee" and some other fanciful imaginary charges. I don't mind being being overcharged a little, but I really dislike being treated as if I was some ignorant bozo who could be gypped like I was 12 years old. I got the price down to something reasonable, but still higher than it should have been. I know I should have walked out and had the frames filled elsewhere, but I was already there, so I just told them to go ahead and do it. Then they said they did not do the glasses there, but they sent them out and it would take two to three weeks. What? If I wanted to send them out somewhere I could have had the glasses made online for $25 to $35. The upshot of all this is that nobody called me when the glasses were ready, so I had to go there myself and pick them up. The staff was supremely disinterested, not a hello, not a smile, just a sullen look when they handed over my glasses and made me sign for them. No case, no microfiber clothe. I guess they are not interested unless I dropped $1000 or so on new frames and glass. So, if you need an eye exam, the doctor is fantastic and everything is professional and 100%. For anything else, I felt treated like a mark. No more business from me here. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I'm an amputee. I am very visibly missing the majority of my left arm and I DO NOT wear a prosthesis so it's very obvious I have 1 arm. I've been going here for about 3 years and have been in dozens of times. It's always the same staff as it's a small staff and they've seen me many many times. The man who works behind the glasses counter has also helped me several times with my glasses (he even makes the same dumb joke every time I come in--since I always bring my dog he never fails to say "does the dog need glasses?"). Yesterday I went in to get fitted for contacts and since I've never worn contacts they had to show me how to put them in. So the man behind the counter the SAME MAN who has spoken to me at least 10 times pulls out the contacts and hands them to me and tells me to open them. I'm struggling to pull back the film with one hand so go to use my teeth and he says to me "You are going to need to use two hands." It was so rude and ignorant. I started to cry and then he dared say that he "had not noticed." The whole thing was so awful and rude. The manager apologized and then took over for him but the fact is, it made what should've been a learning experience for me so frustrating and uncomfortable. It's not easy to put in contacts with one hand and having a rude thoughtless person put me on the spot like that was unacceptable. I'm disgusted. I paid $75 to be humiliated. I went for an eye exam in June and was considering glasses but when they charged me way over the quote on my card without my approval I cancelled immediately and was told that I would be credited back over $3,000 dollars and they never credited me back. I found out today as I am looking at my account that they took my funds and never actually reversed my credit card and I NEVER got any glasses. Pure thievery! read more

I wanted to give this one star but I gave 2 because I've been going there for years and the Dr is still great but the staff has changed. Only one person from the old crew remains and they have her just showing the frames. When it comes to billing, the manager and her hench woman apply the screws. They gave me a price that was approximately 150% more than I paid for glasses a year ago and this is despite the fact that I brought my own frames. I should have walked out when the billing person started fast talking me and writing down ever bigger numbers while assuring me that she would do her best to get me the best price. I told her my price last year was $0 for the prescription lens and $380 for frames. I was told that it was because my union had changed. But after I reluctantly paid, I called my union and they explained that there were surcharges for premium add-ons, but nothing that would bring the price anywhere in the neighborhood of over $1000. I went back to Nassau Fulton about 30 mins later and asked for my money back. They tried some more fast talking and tried to get me out of the store but when I raised my voice i guess they didn't want to spook the other marks they were fleecing, some of whom were elderly people. They gave me my refund minus the 3% (a little over $32) charged by the machine which they claimed they had no control over. I escaped and went across the street to Eye to Eye where I paid 10% of what Nassau Fulton was bilking me for. BEWARE!!! This is not the same Nassau Fulton. Avoid this place. The front office staff are extremely disorganized. I have ordered contacts 3.5 weeks ago and not only that there has been zero communication on the status of the order but when I call, the staff lose my order and prescription each time. I had to come in twice to ask about my contacts order and each time the staff told me they don't have my order nor prescription. I've never had to wait this long for contacts nor experienced such a disorganized office. They really need to join the digital age and not have their patients prescriptions on individual loose index cards which they lose each time. This place is near my office so when my glasses broke *again*, I decided to pop in. One of the prongs from the side hinge had fallen off earlier that morning, and I was sure the glasses were unfixable. I probably thought this because Pearl Vision (where I had them fixed the previous day for $5) told me that. In any case, the saleswoman fixed my glasses in under a minute and only charged me $1. We were in the middle of our to transaction when The female manager barged in and completely took over and confused me and I ended up with signing for and getting polarized glasses. Be aware of the staff at the front...they willing to rip the customers off. You have to check the prices before you get eye examination. They tell you price and you need to negotiate and bargain. My glasses went from $927 to $229 and still the can fool you by not giving you all what the doctor told you to have on your glasses. Really nice optical store. They had a huge selection of frames to choose from under my insurance (GHI). I was so surprised because I've been to 2 other stores in the past that had barely half a dozen options. I selected a pair of Fossil ones I was very happy with. The eye exam was very thorough with the doctor. I felt very comfortable with him and he was very happy to answer all my questions. And I was pleased that I could come in on a Saturday, they see people until 3:30pm (since they close at 4pm). I will be coming back again next year when my insurance permits :) read more

Had a terrible time there, was brushed aside by service rep with dark curly hair was very unaccommodating and unhelpful. Went in there yesterday to seek out some non prescription help for my recurring eye pain from harsh greenish fluorescent lights and computer glare at work. My eyes often tear and sting and I thought I might be able to get some help with the issue. Id heard about some very expensive new lenses that recently came out that specifically reduced strain on eyes when it comes to computers so I went in to find out more. I walked in and the displays were beautiful and the place was so well lit. I was drawn to the place. I wandered around for a few minutes waiting for some help, which didnt bother me because they did seem a little busy. I gently approached an older gentleman with medium long dark, curly hair, glasses. "Hi, I heard about some new lens that can help reduce computer glare at work, but I also experience eye strain from harsh fluorescent green lights on the ceilings. Is there something that can combine both? Like a tinted lens or something?' "get anti glare coated lenses. They will block out glares' He flatly answered "Ok, but what about the fluorescent lights? Is there anything that can reduce the harshness in that? Something that can reduce the contrast the lights cause? Might a lens thats orange tinted or something help?" "Then get transition lenses" He pointed me to an anti glare lens display and while I was stupidly looking at it, he slipped away to help someone else try on some glasses. Feeling kind of humiliated, I put the glare lens display away and left. I dont know whether he didnt like me, or was having a bad day, or if I didnt look rich enough or whatever, but he didnt need to brush me off for someone else. Even if he had just pointed me in the right direction, I would have been happy with that. read more

My first experience here was when I came to fix a pair of my own frames that were a little out of whack. The lenses were pretty much too big for the frame and were starting to pop out. So I wanted them popped back to place. The technician warned me (as they should) that he'll fix them but if they get damaged he's not held responsible. I agreed. I left for about 10 minutes and came back to a perfectly fixed pair of glasses! Great, right? No. First of all, I asked how much I owe him and he said nothing but he accepts tips. I was a little skeptical as to why he would accept tips, especially since he whispered it and all his fellow colleagues gave him the side eye. I took my frames and left. When I got home later that night and put them on, I couldn't see a thing! They did not have my lenses in them. Granted, I should have checked them before leaving but I had contacts on and wouldn't have even noticed. I went back the next day and luckily he remembered me. He looked at them and reminded me that he fixed them but wasn't responsible for damage. I'm like technically you didn't damage them but u didn't FIX them either. You put in someone else's lenses. WTF? It was a never ending battle and he claimed that he BROKE my lenses so he put those in. Why. The. Hell. Would that be an option? At least use the same prescription or TELL ME you broke them. Instead he decided to be slick and had the nerve to ask for tip. I lost that battle and left the glasses with him. My second experience here was when I went in for the DMV renewal exam. You're thinking "Why go back to this place after THAT experience?" Well my flipping license expired, the exam was only $10, its a block away from my job and how could they possibly mess up a "check-up". I filled out the form in a matter of seconds and sat down to wait, and wait, and wait. I waited 15 minutes for a 1 minute exam. During my exam, I expressed that I get conflicting results about astigmatism in my left eye. He didn't confirm or deny it, he just said "Maybe, maybe not" Really? Shouldn't this be the moment where you sell me a full eye exam or maybe give me a little more than three words? C'mon even I know that would've been the perfect opportunity to reel me in. He just wanted me out of there. And I'm glad he did. Def not going back. I'll try Cohens around the corner. read more

Best experience I have had with an optometrist in a decade. Initially, I came in for an eye exam during my lunch hour. I decided to order a pair of glasses from Warby Parker (great experience and unbeatable price - $95/pair) and I have not had an eye exam in a while and felt that my prescription might have changed. One of the staff, Ruth, assisted me immediately. I was seen by Dr. Schafran within 5 minutes of walking in there without an appointment. Dr. Schafran is amazing, he is exceptional at what he does and a great pleasure to talk to. He listened to my concerns intently and made sure I was comfortable. There was zero discomfort throughout the entire exam, which lasted about 15 minutes. At the end, he gave me a prescription so I can order my glasses online. Since my insurance for vision covers either glasses or contacts, I decided to order contacts because I am getting a great deal on glasses from Warby Parker. I used to have 2 week contact lens and those did not work for me as my life style didn't really allow to me care for the lens so many of them ended going to waste. Dr. Schafran gave me 5 pairs of Acuvue Moist daily lens for a free trial and they are super comfortable. Ruth was very patient and helpful. She explained the cost for the eye exam and contacts in detail and walked me through all the rebate programs to save me money. After my insurance and rebates, the cost of one year supply of Acuvue Moist daily lense, the eye exam and contact fitting came up to be about $220, which is really affordable. I would highly recommend Nassau Fulton Optical for anyone that need an eye exam or eye wear. read more

Better shop around. You only buy eye ware once every 3-5 years, and something about the whole process is so opaque, like a medical procedure--so that when they present you the price of your eyeglasses, even though it seems super high, you gulp and take out your credit card. It's my own fault, but only later did I realize I'd been sold the most expensive lens and that they were barely covered by my insurance. If I'd brought my prescription to other opticians I could have gotten a better price. It would have been nice it the sales people had presented me with a list of options, the plus and minuses of each, so I could have made a more informed purchasing decision rather than end up with lenses I really can't afford. Wasn't too impressed. I called to get information, they seemed book and really didn't try to encourage me to come in, although they did mention walk-ins with no guarantees of timeframe. Yelp says they open at 8am so came in from NJ to go before work, and they were closed. Went in later when they opened at 10am. They told me they are booked and doctor isn't in. Also walked away to take a call while the other worker walked away to do other work. I waited a few minutes to see if they would come back to help me... Went across they street to pay about $500 cash in 20 min for desperate contacts I needed. I'd go back if customer service improves a bit. read more

Customer service is extremely poor here. When I walked in there was no greeting. I waited at the counter several minutes before anyone asked if i need help even though all of the three older ladies working in the front looked directly in my face several times. Neither of them were dealing with customers. Just walking back and forth behind the counter arranging glasses, looking at paper work. Just meaningless busyness. Two of them had scowls on their faces but one of them was kind enough to finally acknowledged me. She was friendly, answered all of my questions and set me up with an appointment to see the doctor the next day. When I returned the following day, I encountered the same negligent behavior from the same negligent staff. Although today, one was on the phone, one had a customer and one was on the computer. No greeting, no smile, no "May I help you?" from any of the women. I said hello, still nothing. I didn't get to the point of seeing a doctor because there is no way that i would move forward with such rude service. So I walked out. There is NO NEED to tolerate rude service. Everyone at Fulton Nassau optical was great: pleasant and efficient. They worked within my insurance to get me new glasses without pushing me to buy expensive frames, took off the terribly scratched anti-reflective layer off my old glasses for a very reasonable fee, and were generally just helpful. Dr was gentle and understanding, friendly yet respectful of my time, and the blue light pressure test he has is much less unpleasant than the more common puff test. Even when I picked up my glasses and there was a crowd, they did a great job identifying that I was just picking up and got me taken care of right away. read more

Good little place to get your eyes checked or pick up new glasses or contacts....it's not hip like Tribeca and it's a litte worn around the edges, (and the endless construction on Nassau Street doesn't help the atmosphere -- it will end eventually) but the doctor and staff have been working together forever, as far as I can tell. My review is strictly for Judy, who i later learned to be the manager. I specifically searched for a local optical center versus the big names, looking to be treated more like a valued customer than just a sale. Two days ago, I was seen for my eye exam and to order contacts. We figured out the logistics from my insurance and ordered my contacts. The doctor and the staff that evening were friendly and helpful. I returned to pick up my contacts and to pay my balance, which was clearly printed on my paperwork that was being handled by the worker. Judy interrupted and stated we need to fill out forms and see what my insurance covered. I stated that was all handled two days ago and i simply came to pick up my contact and pay my balance. Shortly after, i asked for a contact rebate form (i had one two days ago, but wanted to review what i needed so that i did not have to return to the store for any missing documents) Twice Judy told me I already had one and would not provide me with the half sheet of paper. I insisted that i receive another copy of the instructions and she continued to say, " We'll know if you try to submit two rebates". I was offended and appalled that she would insinuate that i was trying to gain two rebates. (Which is impossible as you are required to mail in the actual boxes from your contacts). I was being treated as a scam artist for simply asking for another copy of a rebate form. In fact, each rebate form is the exact same, with no variation in code, so whether i had 2 copies or 50, it's the same form that simply provides instruction on how to properly get your rebate. I called back to the store after leaving and not being able to shake Judy's ignorant inference. I was assisted by a wonderful staff member who apologized. My hope is that as a manager Judy pays more attention to how she talks to paying customers and not imply that I am trying to get over for a measly $30 rebate. i am still in need of glasses and hoped to return to the location to make my purchase, i will most definitely be taking my money to another establishment who looks at me as a bit more valuable. read more
