I came here for a second opinion after another dentist had me mentally planning a GoFundMe for my teeth. I'm so glad I did. The front desk was awesome from the start -- friendly, welcoming, and made walking in feel easy. The dentist took her time explaining everything and put together a plan that made sense and didn't leave me feeling like I was signing up for a complete mouth makeover. I went back today to get my cavities filled, and she was fantastic. Gentle, thorough, and constantly checking in to make sure I was good. She even called afterward to make sure I was doing okay. That kind of care is rare. I am 75 years old, and over the course of my long life, I have had dental work done at various practices--not only here in the U.S. but in other countries as well. As a veteran, I was referred to Carmichael Dentistry through the VA Community Care program to get a crown/inlay work. It was one of the worst (and most painful) dental experiences I've had in my life. I came in with zero pain and left with intense teeth pain and migraines, and multiple sleepless nights... all following an inlay procedure on a tooth by Carmichael Dentistry. After more than a week (10 days) of suffering and reaching out multiple times, I was finally told by them that the tooth needed additional work done, but they themselves can't do anything at the moment to help with the pain. And so, it was basically a "not our problem, it's a VA problem now", while fully knowing how slow and impossible that process is... After this, and due to the severity of the pain, I had to get an emergency root canal performed out of pocket elsewhere. AND I had to get a crown done on the SAME tooth because of the root canal. Complete a waste of time and money. The most stunning part of all this was the complete lack of empathy from Carmichael Dentistry. Literally zero effort to help manage my pain, no follow-up call, no accountability whatsoever. It's like they got their payment from the VA, and it's not their problem anymore. If this is how they treat veterans participating in the VA Community Care Program, I'd STRONGLY urge other vets to look elsewhere. We deserve better than this. read more

DON'T GO HERE. I paid $129 for a clean, X-Ray and exam just for them to stop mid-way and say they couldn't finish cleaning because my gums were bleeding. I said "fine" and I at least thought I would be able to get copies of my X-Ray. Nope. They tried to charge me an extra $20 for them. Then, they tried to upsell for more. This whole office is a scam . $129 just down the drain. Be careful. Also, they said I had an infection in my teeth, they didn't give me any antibiotics or prescription for them. They don't care about the patients they just care about what's coming out your wallet. read more

I was impressed from my first visit right away. Dr. Carmichael told me that my bridge wasn't done right (which btw it was done somewhere else) and if I don't get a new one I could get infection which I knew something is wrong coz everytime I eat I need to floss after. If I could give them zero stars I would. This office tries to upsell you treatment plans for unnecessary dental work. When I saw Dr. Carmichael she was aggressive. She saw my X-rays and immediately said I needed a deep cleaning. She literally spent less than 5 minutes examining my teeth. Her dental examine was the shortest examine ever and it seemed she was in a rush to move onto the next victim. Fast forward my conversation w/Pablo to discuss my treatment plan, not only was he unprofessional and rude. He advised me that my only option was to take their treatment plan or switch to another dental office as they were denying me a regular cleaning. So exactly as he told me I switched my dentist. And well guess what, no deep cleaning needed based on my new dentist. I ended up filling a grievance with my insurance company and they concluded that the dentist can't force me to do any treatment and that based on my X-rays and the supplied documentation, there was no need for such an aggressive cleaning. So unless you want to shell out several hundred $$$ and want to be upsold on unnecessary dental work, STAY AWAY! What was strange to me was I overheard 2 other patients being told they needed a deep cleaning too. I was sat in the room that was directly across the office so I could hear everything. Also the office looks very old, dingy, and dirty. Their equipment needs some updating. read more

Sooo... I haven't been to the dentist since 2017, recently moved to the Mira Mesa area, and finally gained some confidence to use my dental insurance before the year ended. I was definitely a bit anxious and frankly overwhelmed by how many dentists there were in the area who took my insurance..!! My co-worker mentioned that they used OpenCare to help narrow down their options. So that's exactly what I did! I came across Dr. Carmichael who had great reviews, and made an appointment online in a matter of 5 min -- just like that! (here's the invite link: https://www.opencare.com/invite/lb780356) I went to my appt today and was greeted by the nice receptionist who offered coffee. About 15min later I saw the hygienist, Nancy. She was SUPER NICE and friendly! While cleaning my teeth, she kept asking if I was okay or if I needed more water. Nancy was very attentive, so I appreciate that after horror stories at other dental offices..!! I briefly met Dr. Carmichael who seemed nice, checked my gums, took pictures of my teeth and clearly explained what work needed to be done. She didn't mention my wisdom teeth or any cavities now that I think about it.... So I'll be sure to follow up with her at my next visit. I ended up having a deep cleaning done same day since they had open availability (They used a numbing gel for it too! They did NOT use the local anesthesia which is awesome because I hate needles!! It's not as effective but it's enough to get rid of most pain). Pablo seemed very knowledgable in terms of insurance billing (in which I do not understand any of it!) and thoroughly explained the costs in detail. (: Thank you guys for making me feel welcomed, and for not pressuring me with additional, unnecessary services! This was a great experience and I would definitely recommend this office. **A few things to note.. - Do your research on prices for the procedures and check Yelp if the office offers any discounts/freebies - I do wish the x-ray pieces were a bit smaller for those of us who have small mouths! I think that was the most painful part of the appt lol.. - The office/opencare sends quite a lot of reminders via text/call/email - Office is located in a small lot where 7-Eleven is, but there was still plenty of parking read more

What happened today was disgusting. I was called in early because my crown had come in. Rushed in and sat in the waiting room and had to listen to the receptionist's family making anti mask comment the whole time. Keep it private!! "If you have to wear a mask to school, I'm not sending you" On top of that, they had the wrong crown for me. I don't have the time to go back and forth. It wasn't their fault, it was the crown companies. I wrote a review earlier with the intentions of me coming back, but as of now I won't. Now it's two more weeks to wait for my tooth. Do you think I'm happy? I just spent 16 minutes on the phone with Pablo laughing at me and threatening me if I don't take down the Yelp review my financial considerations will be out the window. Found them through Zocdoc a few weeks ago because of an infection I have in my gum. There was no treatment to speak of apart from a single X-ray, and the doctors bedside manner left a lot to be desired - extremely patronizing and didn't seem to hear or care about the issue I actually came in for, just tried to upsell me. I was expecting at least to be prescribed antibiotics for the infection which is (and continues) to drain from my gums. Nothing of the sort. Pretty sure they are just cashing in on people like me who find them through Zocdoc since my insurance was billed several hundred dollars for the X-ray and then 5-10 minutes of essentially small talk.
