Went to get the car, guy gave us choices (there were only two for the package he paid and off we go! For return, we came back outside office hours around 3:30 in the morning and no one was on site----instructions to leave key on the dashboard and the shuttle was already waiting on us which was such a relief! National at the airport is convenient if you are an Emerald member. I had reserved a midsize vehicle. Upon my arrival they had 1 car in this class or offered free upgrade to a mustang. (Week of ballon fiesta, of course they had lots of rentals!) As I wanted something with good gas mileage, I went with the Hyundai Elantra. Overall satisfied with the car, some of the features were strange. Also, this car was rented to us with a small Crack in the windshield. Return was a breeze. A reservations by definition is when a reservation is made the vehicle is reserved. Albuquerque airport National turned customers away with no explanation. Evidently this location often accepts the reservations the. leaves their customers high and dry by not have the "reserved" vehicle. Very bad location to do business with. read more

As most travelers are just tired from the flight, having to get the rental is just another dreaded task. I forgot I had Emerald status (it'd been over a year since I last came to ABQ) and the guy at the counter was just not welcoming. So we were off to a bad start. As he was looking up my reservation, I told him how I remembered in the past just walking outside and hopping in a car and he rudely told me "yeah, if you're an Emerald member, otherwise you need to come to the counter". Ok so normies go to the counter. got it. That's when I remembered I was an Emerald member and he confirmed it. He directed me to the stand outside and said to show the guy my ID and credit card. I'm already tired from flying all day, so I get out there, showed the guy my stuff and he looked at me like I was in the wrong place, like I didn't belong there. LOL. turned out I didn't need to show him anything!!! It's the person at the end when you leave that you need to show your stuff. He nonchalantly pointed to the rows of cars I could pick from. When I asked a clarifying question, he seemed bothered. He needs serious customer service skills. I ain't trying to play the race card but he should treat all customers the same. As I'm getting myself situated in the car, I'm already tired, and it's hot. I noticed there was a large case of waters on the counter where I had been talking to the guy. It was hot and he never offered me a water. I was too tired to get out of the car, so I pulled up and there was a girl there. She kindly gave me 2 waters and I thanked her. Does anyone really ever like renting a car? It usually takes a million years and they try to up-sell you on everything. National makes it so easy. The car is ready and waiting for you, there's literally no sales pitch and off you go. Easy peezy. Through their preferred customer program, the prices are great. When I got my bill, National charged me close to $14.00 for fuel. I contacted to dispute. The company reply was: "I see that the rental was returned with 3 gallons less than when picked up. This is the reason for the $13.79 charge. In October 2020 we installed telematic fuel systems in all rentals that calculate the rental to the exact amount at pick up and return. Well how is the customer supposed to know the EXACT amount??!?! The meter said full! As a one time courtesy they refunded the $14. Here was their reply to me: "I have applied the one time credit today for the fuel in the amount of $14.48. This is a one time courtesy credit. Please be aware in the future that the fuel will be calculated upon return and the charge will be collected based on the return level of fuel." National should inform their customers about the telemetric system and have a display for the customer to see!! The 3 stars goes to the staff at the time of pick-up. They were great! The rating lacked 5 stars because of the sneaky, non-transparent way National operates with regards to their fuel policy. I shouldn't have to find out later and not be informed! Worst experience at National nationwide. Asked for the manager after the women I was speaking with was rude and she told me she was but later found out branch manager is named Jose. This is quite possibly the worst rental location in the country. They consistently have no cars, the cars they do have are worn out and filthy. So as an Executive level member this unacceptable. Putting an employee not a VP or branch manager to handle the problem and make apologies just shows how completely weak the leadership is for National in this market. So, if you are planning on renting here remember a couple of things...1. You will not get the size of car your reserve or are billed for. 2. The customer service is awful and has ZERO chance of getting better until there is a leadership change. I know one thing for certain, if the Executive Committee in St. Louis was aware of how terrible this place is they would not only be embarrassed but would be forced to make changes. Another airport with the Emerald Aisle. The rental car bus dumps us all off at the offsite rental location. I skip the counter and wander outside to where the cars are kept. I look for the Emerald Aisle sign, pick out a cute car and then drive to the check out gate. Hand them my credit card and flash my driver's license, they give me a map and off I go! This time I got a white Toyota Camry which reminds me of being at home. Everything in life should be so easy! Returning is just as quick. I had a 6 am flight, so I dropped off the car before they were open. Wrote down the mileage, dropped the keys in the key box and they emailed me my receipt the same day. Love it! Just an FYI, rental cars in ABQ are a bit more expensive than in the rest of the country. Humm....I wonder why that is.....? read more

Dropped off a 1.5-day corporate rental that was discovered on return to have hail damage. Because there was no weather in town during my stay and because my total mileage (~30 miles) limited me to in-town driving, I stated that it must have logically been preexisting. Simple enough to check their system, an assistant said, and then disappeared never to return. After a wait and needing to use the bathroom, I was given permission to leave to the toilet (under escort as I discovered on exit). To my great frustration, computer issues were preventing access to the car's record of damage, so after my bathroom break they initiated claim documentation which would result in a full charge to my corporate card. Mercifully, a manager returned to end the mess, allowing me to leave without processing a claim. They offered me a ride to the terminal and water but I was happy just to go (albeit without vindication). One star for prison-style toilet visit. Plus one star for having a great manager who engaged in skilful last-minute damage control. read more

A smidge pushy when we first arrived to pick up our economy rental (booked through Hotwire)-- they kept on asking us if we wanted the add-ons, even though I pretty firmly responded with no. When we finally got our paperwork completed, picking up the car was a breeze. Returning the car was also fairly easy, though I was annoyed because we had to wait about 10min before anyone noticed us and came over to help with check-out. They did a quick inspection, signed off on our return, and we were out the door. I'd rent from them again, but remember to plan for extra time in your departure. read more

All great until your car gets a mechanical failure message. Antoinette and the Manager at the Albuquerque airport location were useless and completely incompetent. Made us wait 3 hours to get a swap because they didn't know how to perform their own basic job duties. They could have called their service repair request center and confirmed the car had been picked up and dropped off but they didn't and wouldn't. It took me less than 2 minutes. They could have looked at the paperwork looked for the plates, paused the video we gave them of the towing company they hired to look up the plates and search for the car but they didn't. Could have dealt this on their own with the towing company as we had done our part but they refused. Antoinette even hung up on me because she couldn't comprehend why my tone was elevated when speaking to her because she could not emphasize how upset I was that she nor anyone there could perform their basic job functions. The manager refused to even look at the gps coordinates the towing company texted us of where the car was dropped off and went in search of it as if he could do better and locate it on his own. It was like working with tweedle dee and tweedle dummer. Their incompetence to perform basic job functions was beyond any level of comprehension and cost us our entire day. We missed our appointments we had scheduled and are not able to reschedule because of time constraints, only being in the area for a few days and they could care less. Called 3 times to file complaints and escalate the issue hoping a simple phone call could be made to confirm the car had been dropped off at the location National had requested and the new rental car released but it proved fruitless. As I discovered National reps are not allowed to call each other. Just so you have an idea at the level of in inefficacy the urgency escalation rep was only allowed to email the workers at the Albuquerque airport location, that was it. When, if they ever get that email is anybody's guess. The reps at the airport were rude, dismissive and unapologetic. Our car went from a Toyota Highlander to a VW Tiguan, with 3 car seats this car was useless and provided insufficient storage for our luggage. Then tried to rent us the same car with mechanical failures we had returned!We will never rent from this company again. Each rep more useless than the next. Save yourself the headache and rent a car elsewhere. Their company policy on how reps communicate needs to be drastically modified to allow them to be more efficient in resolving simple issues. Their location reps need retraining on how to perform basic job functions and perform basic car search inquiries in locating their own vehicles and they need customer service training in how to deescalate issues efficiently and treat customers. We will never rent from National again, we are completely dissatisfied with the services they provided us after their car had mechanical issues unrelated to us. read more

Definitely go with another company, me and my group waited around for about 15 minutes since nobody was at the counter, we decided to use the kiosk but only met errors. Finally someone showed up and we told him about the issue, his recommendation was "Well wait in line and I'll be more than happy to help you." Good one, especially since we waited for him to finally come to work. Worse yet on the lot, we were given a car that had front end damage, and when we requested one of the many other cars we were refused, with some being "reserved" for members or not in the same class as our car, which was ridiculous. When we had to bite the bullet and take the junker, the guy in the booth took all our paperwork... which when we asked it was "required" on his part to process our car. Great. I have never had a problem at this location. I rent from National whenever I go through ABQ. The staff has always been very friendly, especially in the Emerald Aisle. They have always helped hunt down the precise model of vehicle I am looking for. If you are an Emerald Club member, as long as you book an intermediate, you can take any vehicle on the lot essentially (except the premiums, like convertibles). They have always been happy to ensure I get the vehicle I want and offer upgrades if I am interested (at no cost). The only thing is, every time I go through the drive-out for them to mark what vehicle I took and check my license and membership, they can never find my membership with my driver's license. No other location has this problem. I always have to drag up my membership info on my phone (I don't carry the card). And every time the agent says they will fix it so I don't have the problem again...and every time I have the same problem the next time. Oh well! At least they are relatively quick about it. read more

The most disappointing experience I have had as a 16 year Emerald Club member. In spite of having a reservation, no cars were available at arrival, although we did not have to wait long before one was found. Upon leaving and driving only 50 miles the "low tire pressure" warning light came on. I was on a rural road and had to stop at several service/gas stations before I could find one that had an air pump. After putting air in the tire, the light went out and I had no further issues. This would indicate the Albuquerque location is not properly checking tire pressure in its vehicles before sending them out with customers. On day three of my rental the "maintenance required" warning light came on. While this is not serious as it means an oil change is due it could be unnerving to some drivers. Again, this is an indication that proper regular maintenance is being ignored at this location. Upon returning the car I asked to speak to a manager about these issues. No manager was available, so I left my name and number and was assured one would call. None did. So I called again and again no manager was available, but I was assured one would call. Four days later, no one has called and no one will I am sure. Absentee and unavailable management means both cars and customers are ignored at this location. read more

If you travel often and rent cars often, I would highly recommend an Emerald Club Membership through National Rental Car. The membership is fee. And when you arrive at your destination, you proceed directly to the rental car (instead of waiting in the lines at the car rental stations at the airports). I would especially recommend this option at the ABQ Airport because the lines are very long at times. The staff at National at ABQ Airport worked quickly and courtesly and moved us on to enjoy our weekend and then helped us move quickly back into the airport for departure (again, with no waiting because of the Emerald Club membership!). read more

A few weeks ago, I was visiting Santa Fe on business, arriving first at Albuquerque. I have been using National for many years now, but had never rented at Albuquerque before. Even though I was on a business trip, I wanted to take some extra time to do sightseeing around the area, and my wife was along with me. I really wanted a car with a sunroof so we could get a better view while driving through scenic mountain country. Unfortunately, there were no cars with a sunroof in the Emerald Executive aisle, so I asked a National representative if he could find one. Not only did he find me a car with a sunroof, but it was actually a couple of classes above what I had booked. Despite that, he let me rent it at the same rate that I had originally booked -- very generous! When it came time to return the car, I was running out of time because I was going to be catching an Amtrak train and could not get the car back to the airport depot in time. I called the depot and they said would it be okay to call roadside assistance and have them return the car for me since it was covered by my contract. To cut a long story short, I did contact roadside assistance and they very quickly and easily dispatched a local service to take care of it for me. Even though I was assured that my contract would cover this service, I was still somewhat nervous because it was my fault for not getting back in time, and I was fully expecting to pay at least some of the fee for the service driver. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I got the bill and saw there were no extra charges. Well done, National! read more

The worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. You check in at National and they have you sign all this paperwork. Also mind you that we already prepaid and set the time we wanted to pick up the car. Two hours later the car was still not ready and then told us that the car we prepaid for was not available, needed an oil change and came in damaged. The other options were a truck minivan or Cadillac, all less than what we prepaid. When we finally get into the Cadillac that came in dirty from the inside and we trying to check out, they don't have ANY of our information at checkout!!! We have to go through the whole process again AND they tried to charge us for the new car!! A car we didn't have the option to choose nor that we prepaid for. The manager couldn't do shit for us either and said it's complicated. I just can't even explain the frustration felt and I will NEVER rent from National again and advise you all not to either. read more

Shuttle bus from the airport terminal to the rental car corral is a breeze. Scheduled to pick up a car at 9 AM and what is left in the Emerald Aisle?! Apparently, leftovers :( Hmmmm, it's a tough choice: a filthy Chevy Malibu or an older Nissan Altima sans bluetooth and XM radio? So, I asked the guy in the lot for another vehicle, perhaps one of the Mustangs that were sitting there collecting dust? Nope, those are reserved was his reply. Um, yeah sure they are. From now on, I will be renting from other car rental companies in ABQ. In comparison, I have scored a Mustang Convertible in BUF and a Mitsubishi Outlander at SNA. I use National for my Business and personal travels. They've always been professional, my reservation is always correct and they have a great selection of cars to choose from. Unlike some places, Nationals cars are always clean inside & out. They're not the cheapest but you're paying for the great service. I had a car on this trip for two days when heavy gas fumes started coming through the vents when you turned on the heat. It was 38 degrees so you needed the heat. I took the car back to them, they traded it out for a nicer vehicle with no questions asked. The service from the staff who takes care of the cars was absolutely stellar. read more

I've ALWAYS been happy with National and it's the rental car company of choice. My only bad experience was my last visit to Albuquerque, NM. Only a few cars remaining. Very large van and 2 Kia box like cars. I waited for something to come around. The attendant approached a lady waiting and said 'you have to take what's available.!' Then approaches me, luckily a sedan pulls up from the car wash and I took that one. I'm sorry, if 'I'M PAYING' and driving the same car for a week you better believe I'm not taking what she tells me to take! If I want to wait an hour for a suitable car for my weeks rental, that's my prerogative. This has never happened before and I will be traveling to Albuquerque monthly. Worst car rental ever. There is no cars in the lot. There are like 20-30 people waiting in line. They are bringing only 3 cars out at a time. I have to wait 45 minutes in the sun for a car. When I ask why there is no car, I was given the answer it is because of flight delay. That is a lie. The people are on my flight. They are all waiting too. Why can't they check the # of reservations against the # of cars in the lot? It is not that hard. Other car rental company has cars in their lot. National has none. I've been a member since 2007 actively traveling since. I'm Executive with National, Presidents Circle with Hertz and Presidents Club with Avis. My recent visit to ABQ I picked a Cadillac SUV out of the Executive aisle. I needed to extend my stay and the proposed cost was over $2,000 and my bill was over $4,000. My original invoice was around $400. I called customer service and spoke to 3 different people. I was told I picked up and Elite vehicle and will have to pay the over $2,000 and return it if I don't want to pay another $2,000. I've had Cadillacs, Mustang 5.0s, Volvos, etc. from other rentals in ABQ and never seen such an issue. I was told if I call the local rental place no one would answer. I'm 2.5 hours away in Taos and will have to spend 5 hours of my Saturday traveling to replace a car that was available in the Executive aisle. I'm pretty disturbed by the hole ordeal. National really needs better communication because I'm sure we could resolve this locally without my having to drive 5 hours. read more
