I hired National Floors to sand and refinish the original flooring in our home. I spoke to the receptionist Erin and scheduled an in home consultation. She showed up almost 2 hours late and I found her to be rather rude and unprofessional. The installers that showed up were unable to communicate due to a language barrier. In addition, I felt very uncomfortable after I noticed the workers continually staring at my teenage daughter!! While the quote I initially received seemed rather fair, I got what I paid for!! They burned the hardwood and by over sanding them beyond repair!! Needless my hardwood floors are permanently destroyed and will need to be entirely replaced by a reputable company that meet our standards! I have no further desire to utilize National Floors in Fremont and not to be mistaken for National Floors Direct. As a first time home owner, I really wanted hardwood floors installed in my home. A lot of contractors I interacted with did not have good communication skills. Working with Erin is amazing! First, she went to our new home in Blackhawk at Danville to measure the work order. It was very easy to work with her. She is very flexible and pleasant to work with. We're replacing framed-in railings with metal ones that make the rooms feel larger and more open. Once I'd removed the framed-in railings, National floors came in to install flooring where the framing had been and refinish the floors in our living room, dining room, and upper hallway. They quoted a reasonable price, installed the new flooring to look like it was original and not an add-on, then sanded, filled, and finished the floors so that they look great. It's my experience that you really don't know what you'll end up with when you use a new vendor. National Floors of Fremont recently refinished about 1000 sq ft of our red oak floors and did a fantastic job! Their sanding left no scratches and no dust either (well, maybe just a little). They sanded all day on Monday and part of Tuesday. The first coat went on Tuesday evening and the last two coats went on Wednesday. We could walk the floors with socks on Thursday and place furniture by the weekend. National was not the cheapest bidder ($3.00/ sq ft vs. $2.50) but they are true re-finishers, not just installers of laminate floors. They also made reasonable bids on some additional floor work (thresholds, fireplace hearth frame, etc.) and performed excellently. BTW, be sure to replace ALL your felt pads on ALL your furniture when moving back. The old ones can get worn and harbor grit. read more

We purchased a small condo in the East Bay and discovered there was hard wood under our carpets! After a ton of research and due diligence on our end, we decided to go with National Floors. We found them on YELP and were shocked by all the great reviews. As a devoted YELPER, I gave the owner (Anthony?) a call and he was very passionate about his line of work. Erin (wife) came out the same day to give us an estimate. Once we met Erin in person, we were sold! She too was very kind and full of knowledge and was not "salesy". She assured us that our floor would look gorgeous. Originally we wanted a grey color but after our floor was sanded, Erin explained that we should go with a darker color to hide the tough/damaged spots that just wouldn't go away, the previous damage was too great. Erin showed us a few colors that would work and we decided on walnut! Best decision ever! They are definitely not the cheapest and their quality of the work proves it! But these are my floors and I'll have to see them everyday so we didn't want just anyone to work on them, we wanted the best and we got them. My only problem was that one of the strips was missed and it took about a month for Erin to come out to install it. I can't stop looking at our beautiful hardwood floors. National Floors did such a good job refinishing them, and Erin was a pleasure to work with. The floors turned out better than I could have imagined, and there was much less dust than I expected as well. I will post pictures of the floors. I shopped around with three other companies and National Floors gave us the best price by far for removing the carpet and refinishing the existing hardwood floors underneath, and did a great job. My husband and I both grew up in houses with hardwood floors, and I had a job at one point refinishing hardwood floors, so we both know what a good and bad hardwood floor job looks like. This was *amazing*. We got the natural stain on our red oak floors, and it really brings out the variation of color. They balanced out the unevenness between the tile and the hardwood floors, and it is seamless. We even had to have new baseboards put in because there was too large a gap to cover with quarter-rounds, and there was a bit of minor damage that they had to repair, and they didn't charge us extra. They also refinished the wood inside of a teeny tiny closet and it is phenomenal. I have no idea how they did it in such a small space, but it's perfect. They also finished much sooner than we expected. VERY professional, VERY inexpensive for such high quality work, and VERY quick once they started. I already recommended them to a coworker and I'd recommend them to anyone else. I just wish the rest of our house was hardwood floors so it could be as beautiful as this. read more

Choose any other company. Any other. This review is long overdue. I had my floors done in June/July and it was the most disastrous home renovation experience and I'm still appalled at the lack of professionalism and quality. In a nutshell, a 3-4 day project took well over 2 weeks due to the crew just not showing up and needing to redo their work not once but TWICE. The crew was late every single day, when they even bothered to show up. I was never notified of schedule changes. They often left early, without even saying they were leaving. Erin was very difficult to reach and she never knew where they were or when they'd be arriving. Because we have two dogs and I didn't trust such an unreliable crew, my schedule revolved around this project. The first time, they sanded our floors without using sheet plastic to protect the kitchen area (or any other) so there were wood particles everywhere. They got stain all over our front porch, carpet, door panels, and door jams. We were told they'd send someone to repaint and repair these areas; other than the carpet which had to be cut out, we are STILL waiting. They sampled three colors on the floor, none of which were what I originally chose. The crew had mislabeled the color ratios, so they kept mixing and staining the wrong color, then ran out of the correct color required to mix to the right tone. Rather than going to get more (in the middle of the day,) they left. They also left heaps of supplies in our front yard. When they came back a day later than they said they would (again, couldn't reach anyone,) they had to re-sand to remove the wrong color, again without protecting the other areas of the house. The second time, the stain was so terrible, there were splotches and streaks everywhere. Not one wood panel was even. There were chunks of stain. Literally, raised chunks. In some places, you could see the towel outline from where they'd laid the rug down, drenched in stain, while they sat there. More stain got over other areas of the house. The owner came over and acknowledged how awful it was, and the crew started all over. Again, it was not completed in the agreed upon timeline. Again, stain streaks were added to our porch, door paneling, and custom cabinets in the hallway. Erin and her husband complained several times about the shoddy workmanship and explained they were having internal issues with our crew. They continued to send people they were clearly having issues with which is outrageous. They used a sealant that does not protect well from scratches. They saw we had two dogs and recommended this particular sealant because it dries more quickly (and they can turn projects more quickly) - clearly more focused on profit than quality. The team also installed door jams to cover the stain they got on the carpet. They were installed so poorly, they are all cracked and the stain is uneven. I can't even pull a kitchen chair out without scratching the floor. We paid for new baseboards and they all have nails sticking out. Know that if you pay for baseboards, you're getting bottom of the barrel tacked into your wall with exposed nails. We now have to have our floors done all over again to repair the damage and to actually have the wood protected. We have to have the door paneling and doors repainted, our custom cabinet is ruined, our porch permanently stained. $2500 and it's worse than when we started. read more

I recently used National Floors to repair and refinish my hard word flooring. There were area of warping and water damage stains from a roof leak that happened several years back. As well as normal wear and tear for a floor being 60+ years old. They did a beautiful job! The floor looks brand new. Being a first time homeowner is overwhelming. It was important to me that refinishing the floors would not make my life more difficult. Erin was prompt in her responses, easy to communicate with and guided me towards the stain and sheen I wanted. I was clueless about stains and sheens, and I'm pretty sure I said something vague like "not shiny" and "natural looking." I also mentioned a gray stain since I heard it was popular, but Erin steered me away from the color since the trend was on the way out. My floors turned out stunning (and ahead of schedule). I had no idea that they could make 70 year old floors look brand new. One thing I hadn't expected from getting the floors refinished is that it would make me feel more comfortable in my new home. The worn spots on the hardwood floors were a constant reminder of the old owners - where they placed their furniture, how they moved around the space - it was as if they had left a big piece of furniture behind and I was in their space. The man answered the call when I called. He was extremely rude over the phone. I called to replacement of the hardwood and he said why replace it? Don't replace it. Why are you calling for a replacement? I told him that because I didn't want to refinish the floor since it has been sanded down many times before by the previous owner and he rudely told me that if I knew the cost to replace the hardwood floor would be $12 or more/foot? He treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about. Take your business someplace folks. Do not even bother with people who don't want your business or have no manners to talk to the customer. read more

I have very mixed feelings about them and thus the rating. On one hand their technical skills regarding flooring refinish is top notch and I would definitely give them a 5. The result in our house was amazing and revitalized our floors to brand new. On the other hand, their customer service leaves much to be desired and made the entire experience an unpleasant ordeal, which makes me hesitate recommending them or using them again. I would have to ask myself, is it worth it to go through headache and frustration to achieve the end result? In this sense I give them a 2, for an average of 3.5. The estimate went well and we felt confident about his technical knowledge, and still do. Initial schedule was fine, but when our schedule changed and we asked if he could start the job a week early, he confirmed the wrong date, then accused us of making the mistake. I really don't think this is appropriate considering I have the e-mails showing the correct date we requested and the wrong date he replied with. Color selection was also an issue. He provided absolutely no guidance in this regard, and in fact initially didn't even give us a color chart. We had to use a chart given to us by a competing flooring guy to pick out colors. He then accused us of picking too many samples to test on the floor, and said we were limited to only 3. But how were we expected to narrow it down when he provided no guidance? I was very disappointed with how he dealt with this situation. Thankfully his employees were much nicer and more professional than he was, and showed us all the samples we requested. The biggest problem we encountered, and what I would consider the biggest mistake we made, was hiring them to also replace the baseboards, because they neither paint, caulk, nor counter-punch the nails. We thought this would be no big deal until we talked to our painter, who was shocked that someone would cut so many corners without at least alerting us to the consequences, because it would be very difficult and much more expensive to paint them after installation, and the lack of caulking would also make the boards look terrible. Thankfully the painter was able to come short notice to paint it and caulk it afterwards, but we really felt let down by Anthony because this is something he should have told us in the first place. We felt that other vendors were looking out for us more than he was, even though he was the one being paid for the job! In the end the floors looked terrific, and thankfully the color that we loved. But the whole experience was extremely unpleasant, so I would be hesitant to recommend or use them again. I think Anthony should work on improving his customer service, being more professional, and being more helpful to his customers. If he made these improvements I would definitely use him again and recommend him to everyone. read more
