NATION'S IS ON THE DECLINE: I have been going to Nation's since forever and am sad to see how the quality has gone way, way down and the prices way, way up. The three-egger breakfast was more than $13 and had the quality of food that you would get in a school cafeteria or on an economy flight on a cheap airline. The hash browns were of the low-quality frozen variety. The warm toast was greasy with butter. The jellies were of the lowest quality and packed in little plastic containers. Even the utensils are the cheapest quality I have encountered. For two people, with taxes, the price for this cheap breakfast was nearly $30, which is just unimaginable, considering what was received. For the price one would spend at Nations, one could have a delicious breakfast at a quality restaurant with well prepared food and a professional staff, somewhere like "Lama Beans" on Gilman. read more

Nation's is quite the East Bay burger institution with over eight different locations in Alameda County alone and three in Contra Costa County. Supposedly named because they claim to serve the nation's greatest hamburgers. Though I disagree with their statement, they do serve a decent burger. My now-former co-worker treated me to a meal here on my last day. I asked for bacon cheeseburger and strawberry cheesecake and was able to share her order of fries. - Nation's claim to fame are their "giant" burgers, with their hamburger supposedly 3/4lb but a lot of that is due to the vegetables. Still the burger patty is a bit thick compared to a standard quarter pounder or In-N-Out hamburger. Veggies were fresh. The cheese looked like it was just placed in the burger and not cooked with the patty. - Fries were somewhat on the soggy side with a few crisp pieces. - Cheesecake was a big piece and had a good amount of strawberry and glaze. It contained my sweet tooth enough for the long road ahead. They also serve sandwiches, breakfasts and traditional pies. A decent diner place. Reminds me of diners back home because there are so few diners around Berkeley. The ladies working the register are very nice, and the pies are always fresh. Ordered a slice of berry pie (a la mode), some fries, and a hotdog. The hotdog and the fries are decent and common diner foods, but I really enjoyed my pie. Although the a la mode part was soft-serve ice-cream and not "real" ice-cream, it was still good with the pie. The pie crust is homemade and beautifully flaky, and the filling is so full of berry flavor and hearty as well. I would definitely come back for their pies. Nation's burgers are generally pretty good and pretty big. The pies are unremarkable (except maybe banana cream), the shakes are good and they serve a sort of diner-like breakfast menu all day. You could do far worse (and I bet you have), and it is sort of nice to support this small East Bay chain. That said, today's lunch was pretty annoying. Sixteen minutes from the time we ordered until our two burgers were ready. The place was busy with a mix of Berkeley High students trying to look like they came from the latest Lil Yachty video and seniors who seem to have lost more than a little of their sharpness. A surprising number of both groups wore hats and carried canes, for some reason. The restaurant was understaffed. It also doesn't have a loud speaker for calling out orders when they are ready, and this created a lot of confusion. All told, not a restaurant I'd want to return to at lunchtime - too slow and chaotic and unwelcoming. Worse still, the fries apparently had been cooked in oil that wasn't allowed to get hot enough. Sodden mealy fries are bad news, so I hope this was just my unlucky day. They came in a bag that read "Crispy Outside, Tender Inside." Lies! I'll see you in court on that, Nation's. read more

My roommates and I were in the mood for some pie at 11 PM, so we decided to order Nation's. It also helps that we had free delivery. I've been to Nation's many times just for their wide assortment of pies, and most of their pies have been great, with an occasional miss here and there. We were split on a bunch of flavors but we decided to get an entire Lemon Creme Pie to split between 4 people. I had never thought I would love a slice of pie that much at night, but it was slightly sour and nicely sweet and citrusy. The sprinkles are a nice little touch, and even though the crust looked a little pale, it was still a nice combination of crunchy and soft. Definitely looking forward to Pie-Day. read more

It's about 11p.m., the Jason Mraz concert just finished, and we're hungry. Problem: What is open at this hour? Solution: Nations! My mom, her friend from work, and I popped in here last night, and boy was this place crowded late on a Friday night. (I'm guessing some other Mraz-ians had the same idea) We immediately rushed to the restrooms before ordering. A little sad that I had to wait in a line for one stall, I ended up using the men's. It's one of the very few times I've had to do that, but I believe I've discovered a trend - boy's bathrooms are just nasty. The line to order was long, but moved quickly. I ordered the grilled cheese with grilled onions (note: you have to ask if you want grilled onions and pickles) with no mayo, my mom ordered the cheeseburger combo, and my mom's friend ordered the french toast with a side of bacon. (Big plus - breakfast is served 24/7 - loves it!) Now they are known for their pies, but we opted out of that calorie monster. Now, as busy as it was, it was very hard to find a table. The unfortunate part was that the problem wasn't that the tables were full, it was that most tables were unclean. I understand that the staff was probably unprepared for the rush of ravenous concert go-ers, but they really should have sent someone around to wipe tables. The food was ready in a flash, except they totally forgot about the french toast order. They were very sorry and immediately put some delicious texas bread on the grill. After waiting a couple of minutes, we were shocked by the amount of french toast pieces we received - 9 huge halves! Now, we're not sure if this is normal or if this was a consolation prize for waiting. Either way, our stomachs leaped for joy. My grilled cheese was amazing and I was soooo happy they remembered not to put mayo. You wouldn't believe how hard it is for most places to remember this simple special instruction. The fries my mom received were so piping hot that you could still see the glistening grease. In the words of Rachael Ray, yum-o! Bottom Line: Great late night burger joint that will serve your breakfast faster than any Denny's. read more

This was a pretty solid burger. Stopped in late for a quick burger jones and glad I did. Delicious, fresh tasting (for a diner) and left very happy. This is an interesting place with a simple menu but a very smart business model. Burgers and chili dogs, and pie...oh my!! Oh and a pretty solid breakfast too - from the looks of the plates that came out. Walking in here is a blast from the past that's kind of similar to being in a Big Boy, minus the table service and quite the same level of kitsch. It's the "great pies" part of their sign that led me in, though. And let me tell you, the pie case is a sight to behold, greeting you with its host of colors right when you walk in. They also sell their pies whole, or as "regular" and "small" slices to satisfy any appetite. Fantastic pies! We got the berry pie, banana creme pie, chocolate creme pie, and coconut creme pie. These pies are probably the best I've had in Berkeley. They are open till late so it's a great late night snack run. The pies, unlike others I've had, were not outrageously sweet but had the right balance -- like enough that it's dangerous since you just keep eating them. Service could have been better but it was pretty busy when we went which was closer to around 11pm so understandable. First time trying Nations and I wasn't disappointed. Had a cheeseburger and it was huge. One thing I didn't care for it was slathered in Mayo but overall the meat was good and the veggies were fresh. Fries were good, my bf got a slice of Banana cream pie,(OMG) I'm not a big pie eater but damn it was good. Also my friend got a slice of cheesecake which was bomb. After driving by this place 1,000 times, I decided that we would give it a try. It was a very mixed experience. First off, I liked that the place was completely unpretentious. It actually reminds me of the diner in Pulp Fiction, where Pumpkin and Honey Bunny plot to hold up the place. Would be disconcerting except that I'm a Tarantino fan, so that part's all good. The burgers were four-stars. My guy had the cheeseburger and really liked it; I had the salmon burger and thought it a nice change of pace. The fries? Disappointing. Just nothing special at all. Not hot. Not salty. Not fresh. Two stars. The pie? Four stars for comfort-food appeal, though the whipped cream on top was a bit synthetic and artificial flavored. Banana cream was nice though, so a four star overall for kitsch and flavor in spite of that. The service? One star. Literally eighteen minutes until they called our number. That's too damned long for a couple of burgers and some fries and cutting a slice of pie. Seriously, come on... So overall, a three-star experience that could have been four if the fries were fresher and the service even moderately efficient. read more

Banana Creme Pie (~$4): The whipped cream to filling ratio was so disappointing. I'm not really much of a crust person and Nation's didn't manage to change that either. Thank you for the pie on Pi day! My friends and I shared the banana cream for $11.50 (whole pie). The pies are well made, delicious and probably the best thing here, but nothing fancy. I would liken them to Marie Callenders (I honestly can't taste the difference) except that it seems like more of a local place to eat rather than an international chain. The wait does take a bit long but there's always plenty of seating. The rest of the food is your typical diner fare. I usually order the grilled cheese which is full-fat and buttery. Nation's pie. THE reason to come here. Of the pies that nations offer, my favorite is between the banana cream and the cheesecake. I went here today with my friends and ordered the Alaskan salmon burger today and it was better than I would've anticipated. Breaking down the burger, piece by piece...The Alaskan salmon burger was served on a wheat bun by default, but I suppose you can call it out and ask for a regular sesame bun. Wasn't a big deal to me. I'm guessing salmon is what people try to order when they want to eat healthier so Nation's tries to help with a wheat bun? The burger itself was very flavorful - they salt and pepper on the grill, and to my big surprise, was not overcooked. I always hesitate to order salmon burgers at restaurants because of how dry they can end up but I was really impressed with Nation's today. In terms of condiments, zomfgwtfbbq. They put like half a jar of mayo on your burger! (I'm obviously exaggerating but it was a lot, and I'm not a fan) Again, some people like mayo, I prefer to hold it. Grilled onions - definitely on par with In-N-Out. Cheese - double slices. Double the calories, double the goodness. If you have the late night munchies, and you either have a car, know of a friend with a car, or just live in the area, I would highly recommend hitting up nations for a slice of their pies, or the salmon burger. read more

Before any of the hype for sexy burgers we now have there was Nations and it was good and it still is. This is not the best burger nor the cleanest coolest hippest joint but it's a damn fine burger. I think out of all the late night greasy options in Berkeley, this has always been my favorite! Nation's is also the very first place I ever enjoyed a meal at in Berkeley, I ate here a few weeks before moving up here during my job interview visit, and I ate breakfast here again when I visited Berkeley to sign my lease. That being said, it holds a special place in my heart! EVERYTHING I have ever ordered has been cooked to perfection! My favorite dishes are their breakfast. Pancakes? Hell yeah! French Toast? Yes Ma'am! Absolutely perfect. The bread is moist and flavorful with crispy edges. Pancakes melt in your mouth! They will cook your eggs and meat to your liking, they always ask you as you order. Out of the dozens of times I've ordered here, they have always gotten my order correct! The burgers are fat and juicy, fried not grilled, but that's what keeps em juicy, the grease! They truly taste home made by mom, well someone's mom anyway! Best of all is the pie! Damn it's hella good! My favorite is the strawberry cheesecake and the peach pie. Nations tends to make terrible burgers. Unfortunately, they always fall apart and make a terrible mess. I have no idea exactly why. Maybe the employees are encouraged to put as much mayonnaise and sauce as possible. What ever it is, it doesn't work. Not a good idea to pick up a burger at Nations to go. Cool burger joint nothing too spectacular. Yes the burger is giant but a majority of that size comes from the lettuce, tomato, onions, and bread. The patty is fairly normal. Only had the Sweet Potato Tart: $2.91 for a whole 5" tart? Yes please! More of a pie than a flat little tart, this thing is REAL. There are chunks of real sweet potato in the filling, and it isn't too sweet. The crust nicely contrasts with a slight savoriness with sweetness. Very good. I didn't have any of the burgers, but they seem to look and sound good. On the menu, they put the calorie content of all their stuff, which is pretty good. It said their burgers are 3/4 pounders. A decent place to come for resonably priced burgers + pies. came with my cousins for some dinner. bacon cheeseburger is apparently a favorite of theirs - had a taste, very normal burger, in fact it was quite soggy. also had the salmon burger - small and fishy. the cheese they use is very buttery/processed tasting, like kraft's american cheese. the bun is not grilled well either. BUT, after a long day at a water park, we came in pretty hungry. the mayonaise- processed -cheese-drenched burger tasted good! tried some pumpkin pie and banana cream pie. they were not too sweet and had good textures. they over did it a little for the whip on top of the banana cream pie though. overall, if you are looking for a quick/cheap bite this place is a-OK. i would totally rather go to in-n-out though!
