In my mind, I can imagine the perfect "as good as it gets" grocery store. I don't think natural grocers is quite there, but in Austin, Natural Grocers is as good as it gets. Its all organic with HEBish prices. Although I have to drive across town to get there, Natural Grocers has everything I need at the quality and price I need it at. They are the only place I know of besides farmers markets that sell Elk and Lamb on a consistent basis. Produce is well priced. read more

This store is very limited. They don't have a ton of traditional options. But they make up for this by having a wide variety in other categories. Examples; very small produce selection (about 14ft of wall real estate), maybe 10 different types of deli meat, 6 - 8 types of coffee, small selection of raw meat, and other traditional items, etc. Although they offer a huge selection of juices, prepackaged health foods (bars, soy chips, crackers etc.) and of course vitamins. I think they are a partner or something, definitely a buddy, with Vitamin Cottage. Anyways, if you know what you are getting into and quite aware of its limitation and advantages its quite a lovely place. Never crowded, the employees are always kind, they have dollar bags of produce at the ripe/over ripe level of readiness. Their sales also rival and exceed those of Wheatsville and Central Market on varying products. An all around pleasurable place to shop. That being said, maybe look at their online monthly sales booklet to get an idea of what they have and what you want before stepping in. Its not a store to really just pop into when you are hungry. I will say its the only store i have seen ostrich steak sold! Oooo I almost forgot, NO BOOZE, for whatever reason, i think i asked once and they said religious or something. It's just hard to beat Natural Grocer - or Vitamin Cottage as their other name says - for what they focus on: high-quality organic foods and a plethora of natural vitamins, remedies and homeopathic solutions. Yes, Central Market has a bigger produce selection but Natural Grocer's is 100% organic and at NG you'll find parking and often better prices if you shop judiciously. Their bulk section is better than CM's by the way. Yes, Fresh Plus has chill help but the reason they're so chill is that few if any of them know much about food, so why worry? At Natural Grocer most of them know food, and some of them know a lot: NG hires experts who are into food as part of lifestyle and healthy habits. No, you won't find much fresh meat here, although they have a little more in the frozen, but NG isn't really trying to be everything to everybody. They focus on healthy and organic, and they succeed. There is definitely a place for Natural Grocer in my shopping plans, and hopefully in yours too. By the way, they're pretty chill here too! read more

Love raw revolution spirulina and Kombucha :-) they very affordable at this chain store however I bought some hummus and it was all molded which in a way it's a good thing because the food is real and not loaded with preservatives but lots of stuff don't sell as fast as a regular store so use caution when purchasing "stuff" I would shop here every day of the week but being careful on what I buy ... also I think the produce is way expensive here :) Let me say this again .. I am excited that this grocery store opened up within walking distance of work. I am also excited to see that they have stocked Green Cart wraps (at lower prices than Wheatsville and Fresh Plus). They also carry a few other ready made items that I can pick up for lunch such as Tom's Tabooley. For the small size of the store, they carry a nice variety of food, from gourmet chips, Amy's frozen entrees, fancy chocolates, to Greek yogurt. They even carry coconut water. Good selection of hard to find veggies, dried herbs, and natural vitamins. I would certainly not shop here for the family, but it's nice to have some luxe items I can pick up so close to work. I was disappointed that this place didn't have a fresh deli, seafood department, etc, but I will certainly come here on occasion to pick up a healthy lunch, or items they don't carry at the HEB for dinner. read more

I love this place! It's a tad expensive, which is to be expected. But I am always excited when I find something I can use in the produce dollar bin. I love not having to dig for organic products like I do at, say, H-E-B. Cons- I wish they did better gluten-free labeling like most other grocery stores do now. This place is AWESOME! I used to always shop at the Whole Foods downtown, but after I recently moved to Hyde Park, I decided to check out the Natural Grocers on 39th & Guadalupe to see what their selection was like. Needless to say, I don't shop at the Whole Foods that much anymore (unless I need some fresh seafood or wine!) They have a good organic produce section (purple cauliflower and rainbow radishes??), great bulk herbs and spices, helpful employees and KILLER prices. I've never seen GT's kombucha for $1.99 anywhere else in town. The ONLY reason this place doesn't get five stars is because IT'S FREEZING COLD inside. Like remember to bring a jacket cold. Even the cashier who handed me back my change today was wearing gloves. Keep in mind it was close to 80º outside. The good part about it being so cold is I often rush to get out of there so I guess it saves me from spending too much money! Besides that I suppose I could note the less than stellar music that plays here. I shudder to hear DISCO and overplayed oldies music each time I shop. Call me spoiled by Whole Foods, but ambiance does play a factor in where I spend my time shopping. I'm so happy Natural Grocers is near my neighborhood! It's the answer to the question, "What do you want for snacks this week?" They have an excellent selection of breakfast and snack options, among many other healthy options. We no longer drink dairy or soy. The replacement is vanilla hemp milk and it's .70 less than anywhere else (that I've found) in town! The sales are pretty bananas. Keep 'em coming, Natural Grocers! Pros: Best, freshest and most inexpensive bulk section for herbs and spices I have seen in all of Austin. Prices are comparable to Whole Foods and Central Market for the rest of the store's inventory. I love the fact you have to bring your own bags or use one of their card board boxes because they don't offer any bags, plastic or paper. It has by far the largest selection of vitamins and supplements I have seen in a grocery store its size and the staff is very friendly and helpful in finding you what you need. The people who work there are some of the nicest goddamned people you'll see in a store. Helpful and happy. So that's always a pleasant experience. The food selection is good.. not much selection in produce and stuff but that's not the real focus of this place. Amazing vitamin selection and people who know how to make recommendations if you need help. Tons of teas here- plenty of things on special/sale too. Their meats in the back freezer (buffalo, ostrich..some of the things I saw..) are varied and organic, hormone free. I much prefer this place to Central Market.. much more personable (and yes, being smaller has a lot to do with that) and a welcome addition to the 'hood. New extended hours too. I try to shop local as often as possible but the friendliness from the staff and good vibes inside Natural Grocers make it difficult to avoid. 1. I give them a 5 because they are the first grocery store in Austin to stop using bags. They do have boxes from stock in large bins but there is no guarantee they will be there for your purchase, and not likely on a busy weekend. Bring your own bags the earth will thank you for it. 2. The best prices on Kombucha in Austin. 3. Amazingly fresh bulk items. 4. Something you need is always on sale. What I would do to improve Natural Grocers. 1. They only have a plastic recycling bin. Step it up add glass and paper. This way I do not have to take the best priced Kombucha bottles to the other stores for recycling, and get sucked into spending money while I'm there. 2. Bulk dispensers for Dr. Bronner's soap. I like to refill my bottles. Your competitors offers it. I will do as much shopping at Natural Grocers as possible. I stop by this store for a few things here or there. They usually have pretty competitive prices, especially when they have a sale. Even though it looks like a tiny store, they have a lot packed in there. However, Natural Grocers, I have to ask you what is so natural about FREEZING your customers...like where it feels nice outside, and then after stepping in the door, you really, really wish you had brought a jacket? It certainly makes me shop faster so I can get out of the cold as soon as possible, which is probably not what you're aiming at. And you presumbly aim at conservation by not offering your customers reusable bags, but I have to say you're wasting a whole lot of resources by keeping your store so cold. Okay, but after rambling about that one fault, I really still do have to give you 4 stars, though. read more

Everyone is super friendly and helpful here. They won't have everything you want/need but then again, they will have the things H-E-B and other grocery stores won't. It rules that they send out coupons because I always think its hard to get coupons for natural organic products (sadly). The coupons keep me coming back because I can't afford to shop there all the time, although I'd love to. I was super excited to shop here after reading all the yelp reviews.I really hate huge grocery stores and the parking here is always great. The staff was really nice but I don't think I will shop here again. I'm a poor college student and this place doesn't offer enough variety for me to stay on my budget. It's awkwardly structured and I felt like I was constantly bumping into someone. Everything was hard to find. I am loving this place! They have about the best selection of homeopathic remedies I've seen, including things I can't seem to find anywhere else. They also have a great "fake meat" selection for my vegetarian son. And, best of all, they are just 2 blocks from my office & have the delicious turkey & cranberry sandwich on focaccia bread, fresh from The Green Cart. Prices are comparable to HEB, which makes them far better than Whole Foods or Wheatsville. Definitely worth checking out, if you haven't already. read more

I am very pleased with Natural Grocers. It took me a few trips to warm up to them, but I am finally and fully understanding their concept. Natural Grocers probably would like the ability to have more "convenient and time-saving" products on their shelves, but realistically that wouldn't be natural. As a food-tech... yes, we do exist... I am very thankful this store exists. Whole Foods sells GM foods and Mackey has said WFMI has strayed from their mission. Central Market has always been barely organic from the get-go, and really couldn't be less concerned with the movement unless you are speaking of the movement of profits their way. Natural Grocers has everything you would need from a grocery store. The only reason I give Natural Grocers a 4 star rating instead of a 5 is that they have been unable to accurately forecast their produce sales. Because of this, you will notice from time-to-time a slight decline in produce quality. Is it safe to eat... yes, would the average consumer think it is... no. Best Grocer in Austin... period. And the friendliness of the staff puts even Wheatsville to shame (and that's hard, because Wheatsville employees are so jolly)--they are so so nice here. One time, I was running on the greenbelt , and a passerby STOPPED ME to tell me that he was a checkout clerk at Natural Grocer, he'd seen me in their store and where had I been the last few weeks? I'd give Natural Grocers four stars if I was at all into the whole vitamins and supplements thing, which is what this place is all about. I just stop by basically when Wheatsville is having parking issues (which is often) to pick up a few things. I love that they have Udi's granola, which is the best ever, and a fair selection of natural veggies, fruit, yogurt and other essentials. There's not much in the way of meats and pretty much no baked goods of note. They have a good semi-healthy snack section, so you can get chips with less guilt, so that's cool. They were also the first ones to do away with plastic bags, so props on that. It can be done (and was, for centuries, though the way people whine you'd never know). read more

I'll be visiting Natural Grocers pretty often. It's more convenient than HEB for a quick shopping trip and they have a much better selection of organic food than Fresh Plus. I want to explore the refrigerated bulk section and I'll definitely go there next time I need some organic Bison. The vitamin/homeopathic stuff takes up half the store so it's a bit overwhelming! The only complaint I have is that when I did venture into the vitamin section, I needed some help and no one was around. I flagged down one of the employees and she tried to help (though she seemed less than happy to), but didn't know any more about the products than I did. Compared with the same department at Central Market, this was disappointing. I like to have a little education about the homeopathic stuff before jumping into it. Yes, I was also surprised by the lack of selection- I went there right before the superbowl and wasn't able to get hot dog buns or beer. But! Great price on tofurky dogs, and so much other stuff! It really feels more like a nouveau-health vitamin and supplement store; those types of products took up at least half the place. I didn't need to buy anything of that nature that day, but I'll definitely go there when I do, the prices look way better than similar shopping alternatives. The lack of selection didn't bother me much-even in my last-minute predicament, I was so charmed by the place and the sales. My advice is to go there when you're not in urgent need of something, and just get a feel for what they have and get to know the place. It will save you money! I've never seen odwalla juice, kombucha, a select few fancy cheeses, and some granola/energy bars at such low prices in Austin (or ever!). Go there for what you know they have. I would rather give the store a 4.5 than 5 stars, but it exceeds the excellence of ALL other health food stores in Austin in that ALL of the produce there is organic. I LOVE that about this store -- that and the fact that many of the prices there are very competitive. The people who work there tend to be extremely friendly and helpful and I also love it that when the produce is getting old they sell dollar bags -- something very few stores do anymore (and HEB actually puts their older produce in locked dumpsters and grind it up). The reason I would give it minus half a star is because of the part of their store with is neither produce nor supplements, such as bulk items and packaged goods. In this area they seem to be entirely hit-or-miss about whether anything is organic (and I suspect the buyer for those parts of the store really doesn't care and only picks things that cost less). I really would love to see them commit to more organic product in the rest of their store and not just in the produce section! Now that I am miffed with Wheatsville for selling foods they know are comprised, I am especially grateful to have Natural Grocers as an option. They also have the prettiest recycleable bags (for a dollar or two) and almost always have some of the things that I buy as staples for a cheaper price than their competitors. read more

This place is like a mini-whole-foods. it's small, has weird parking, but has a decent selection of fun vegan food stuffs. They have a tiny produce section, and a massive vitamin section. I saw vegan calamari. and i'm still laughing. I grabbed a quick breakfast (a tom's spicy vegan tofu wrap), and looked a bit more through the store. the prices are decent, maybe a little cheaper than whole foods. plenty of vegan cheeses, snacks, chocolate and frozen what nots. i went to check out, the only one that was open, and the girl was on the phone. she seemed quite annoyed that she had to "sorry, i have to let you go" off her cell phone. no smile, no did you find everything, no have a nice day. that's cool. i didn't go to natural grocers to make friends with the cashier. i'm sure she doesn't want any. but i was impressed by the vegan-friendliness, and i will be back. read more

4 stars because I just do not believe in perfection no matter what. If I could for this place I prob would give 4.5 stars or beers or what the hell ever. Living in a large amounts of large cities in me life (5 since that Katrina syndrome) I can say I have lived in several cities that have "health food groceries" out the arse. This place is pretty much what you should have at groceries like this. They even have a few other of their own niches going on. The prices are what is expected, and if not a little bit lower in some cases. Their staff (when I was there) was just loquacious as can be, sweet and helpful. When they ask you if you found what you are looking for, you can tell they do not mean "did you help yourself to stuffing your pockets". I honestly believe they mean "have you found what you are looking for", because they sure will help you find it if not. "Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage" is not a full spectrum natural food store...look at the name....it's really a modern day "health food store"....an upgrade to and reminiscent of health food stores of the 60's and 70's.....it's a chain without the "chain" feel....it has its niche....other reviewers who downgrade it either don't accurately size it up and see it for what it is or it just doesn't meet their criteria, which is ok...in other words, you don't go to a hardware store for a loaf of bread.... Pros- 1. Great highly-visible central location 2. Very clean and well organized 3. Best air conditioning anywhere 4. Very friendly and generally knowledgeable staff 5. Doesn't feel corporate even though it's a chain 6. Excellent selection of supplements and natural body care products 7. Generally good (lower) prices on supplements and natural body care products; way better than whole paycheck and central markup 8. Even better prices on end-aisle specials and weekly specials 9. All produce is certified organic* 10. Nuts are sold refrigerated 11. RO water for 25 cents a gallon; bring your own jug 12. No bag policy- bring your own or they'll give you a box; every store should do this Cons- 1. Funky small parking lot, although never full; it has only one awkward entrance on Guadalupe and two exits 2. Small produce section not always the freshest; shipped in from Colorado 3. All produce is certified organic*; not really the best policy as many items don't need to be organic with the accompanying price premium (see the Dirty Dozen/Clean 15); I don't need to pay extra for organic avocados when conventionally grown are basically chemical free as avocados have few natural pests and don't bear well when chemicals are applied 4. Very little local stuff, i.e. Richardson Farms, Full Quiver, local sprouts (sunflower and the rest) from the sprout guy who supplies almost every other store in town with natural although not certified organic produce 5. They have some strange policy to not carry certain items like DHEA?; excuse me!...I choose to be responsible for my own health choices and don't need my "grocer" to do it for me 6. Way too much processed food; just like all the rest- soy, canola, sugar, GMOs 7. Weak selection of "raw" and superfoods, i.e. no raw cacao powder? 8. Closes too early- 8:04 weekdays and 6:06 Sundays; never fear, Wheatsville is near and open till 11:00 Conclusion: I can go months without going to WF or CM unless someone wants to meet there....I only go to HEB for avocados & mangos and the occasional organic blueberries (US grown, in season) or something like that...I never liked the vibe at Sun Harvest which also has the worst produce anywhere....Sprouts & NewFlower are mostly processed food, basically regular supermarkets in disguise.....I buy most of my perishables at the Farmers' Markets....and non-perishables online (way cheaper)....I use NG and Wheatsville to fill in between orders.....Aside from the Farmers' Markets, I think Wheatsville is the best local natural grocery- best feeling and best product mix- however, when I need something they don't carry, I go to NG which is a close second....Wheatsville is better for produce and NG is better for supplements and body care...if you're in the general area, why would you ever go to HEB, CM & WF when you can easily swing by Wheatsville and NG? read more

I really can't understand negative reviews about this place. The selection is fantastic. The prices are MUCH better than Wheatsville, and this is for the exact same items, mind you. Not only that, many items are clearly listed as being marked down. I feel like our last trip we probably saved $40 on a $100 receipt compared to Wheatsville, maybe more. The staff were extremely helpful as well. Coming from NYC I was getting a little discouraged at Wholefoods and Wheatsville as I felt the prices were relatively the same, but Natural Grocers has restored my faith in Austin. read more
